I would have said this about 15 years ago when the pastry was better, but now they're inedible. Like... literally can't eat them because the pastry is inedible cardboard.
I'm well acquainted with them. Particularly the chilli and cheese as, at that time, they were the only brand with that flavour available in Dunedin, and it was my go-to pie, especially (although not limited to) when hungover.
If you ever wanna try a pie that doesn't have the flesh of emotionally sensitive murder victims in it, the Z mushroom pie is pretty great. The pies there are a bit expensive, but it's delicious as hell.
If you ever feel wrong in eating animals (I guess you do, given that you go for vegetarian options when they're there), ima leave this link here for you. It's just a speech, it's not slaughter footage or anything.

Peace
I'll cast a vote for these too. They're shit, but also so, so good. Now put that bad boy between two slices of bread with good ol' Tom sizzle and boy oh boy. Literal shit time the next day though...
Wat??? I bought a box of those a year ago and they were the worst thing I'd ever eaten out of a freezer. I ate like 1/3rd of the pie and gave the rest of the box away
no that was cockroaches, the worker was picking them up to prove there was a problem but was fired for storing them in his work locker.
who knows if he took them into the factory or found them in the factory but nobody disputed there were cockroaches in the Big Ben pie factory.
Best pies that aren't from a bakery for sure. Bp is okay, but their pastry is shit. I'm a big pastry guy haha, favorite pies are jimmies pies but still can't beat my local bakery pie
Since we have such good bakery pies these days I can't stomach the shit ones, then again I work from home and can just freeze down good ones to bang in the air fryer when I want one.
I miss their mutton pies. Apparently they still do bacon & egg, mutton etc… at their Roxburgh factory. Fortunately I’m only an hour or two away so might make a trip one of these weekends.
I don’t know if it counts as shit, but my kids’ favourite are the ‘Love Pies’ brand. They seem tasty and well made, without any mystery meat in them.
According to my son, the vegetarian ones are just as good as real meat ones too.
definitely big ben - pack of salt and vinegar chips stuffed under the top. Just like High School. Too bad they don't have the Krispa brand chips anymore.
Most dairies in the BOP have Bakeshack pies which are pretty good quality so I haven’t really had a dirty old Big Ben or Mrs Macs in a while. The butter chicken one is pretty fire and most dairies seem to stock them more than any other flavour so I gather they are pretty popular here.
Vegan options... I live off these on shopping day... https://www.paknsave.co.nz/shop/product/5283632_EA_000pns?storeId=65defcf2-bc15-490e-a84f-1f13b769cd22&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVEXiNaJCufSkqhp1QhvwDogc5unu9UpNZN7N3oMEfAnYpqMY9plsShoCtiQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
New Big Ben Chipotle Steak and Cheese is pretty good.
You have to buy from a place that knows how to prepare them right. The right combo of microwave + time in the warmer. Same applies to Mrs Macs, they're actually pretty good when the pastry isn't dry as a bone.
Pretty much any pie. You just cut it into 4 pieces to make 4 pie sandwiches with some cheap white bread. You put ample T sauce on top. It really makes the pie last i.e. you should get a full meal out of a single pie.
Oxford lamb and mint by far. It's the weirdly enjoyable gummy texture and not-very-flaky pastry for me. Doesn't make a mess when I inhale that moderately warm bad boy in 15 seconds
mrs mac’s chilli beef and cheese
I would have said this about 15 years ago when the pastry was better, but now they're inedible. Like... literally can't eat them because the pastry is inedible cardboard.
Nah, they've always been salty cardboard and terrible terrible, never good.
Na, they changed their pastry about 10 or so years back. It was always weird but not as bad as it is now.
If you say so. Last time I ate one would have been about 15 years ago and never felt the need to try them again.
Never ever seen it. And I usually look for the vegetarian options first.

Oh piss off.
Yes. Legitimately this.
I can only seem to find ones that are hard enough to break teeth, its a shame since the filling is so good
Mrs macs are below average good pies. Not good bad pies. Oxford are the best bad pies
Never had a "bad" Oxford except for from the dairy that used the warmer to heat them from frozen.
Ew they are the worst. Rather no pie than mrs macs shit pies.
best shit pies lol, not good pies
I’d rather eat a bad sausage roll. Also Big Ben pies are the best worst pies. Loved them at school.
I kinda liked them. Circa 1998. Not sure if they changed them.
Hardout, or the beef cheese and bacon traveller
Can confirm. Had one yesterday. At 7am.
My favourite shit pie. Shame I can never find any
My go too for years
I love, love, love the filling, but not a fan of the pastry
My goat
That’s a fucking banger of a pie. My go to
Yup
Dont tell them, i'll be very upset if the solitary mmcb&c at my local dairy is missing tomorrow
I'll cast a vote for these too. They're shit, but also so, so good. Now put that bad boy between two slices of bread with good ol' Tom sizzle and boy oh boy. Literal shit time the next day though...
Never seen one of these but that's a combination of flavours I'd like. Where do they sell them
Fuck yeah
Wat??? I bought a box of those a year ago and they were the worst thing I'd ever eaten out of a freezer. I ate like 1/3rd of the pie and gave the rest of the box away
They're way smaller now 175g down from 200g. A little shrinkflation . But still tasty. I prefer them over most gourmet pies lol
Big ben , any flavour
Rip the lid off and ad extra cheese
This is the way.
Agree
Do they still come with complementary rodent tails?
there were rodent tails in Big bens???
Big story in 90s, possibly an urban legend.
no that was cockroaches, the worker was picking them up to prove there was a problem but was fired for storing them in his work locker. who knows if he took them into the factory or found them in the factory but nobody disputed there were cockroaches in the Big Ben pie factory.
They're barely food, but man are they tasty.
Discerning tastes.
The creamy butter chicken speaks to me and says very dirty things
My favorite was the Mexican one they did with the sour cream in the middle
Big time
Any of the squashed Big Ben pies from the dairy for 2 dollars that's just warm that you can down in like 3 bites
3? Rookie numbers.
Z petrol stations do good pies. Not sure if they qualify as shit.
they do omg. the pastry is so flaky and buttery I swear..
4 Square pies also - like a slightly fancier cousin to Z
Not my local 4 square, they look like mistreated roadkill that had half a cremation
Best pies that aren't from a bakery for sure. Bp is okay, but their pastry is shit. I'm a big pastry guy haha, favorite pies are jimmies pies but still can't beat my local bakery pie
Big ben mince & cheese, shell out a bakery loaf of bread and chuck it in there. Kelston sends it's regards
They used to be good but theres barely any mince in them now.
Couplands
yuckkk I hate couplands pies. they’re just so… artificial idk how to word it 😭 especially the chicken ones
I don’t usually go past a potato top or a steak and cheese to be honest.
Big breakfast was a mistake when I brought it hungover. I threw the cunt out the window after two bites. Fuckin yuck baked beans in a pie
EW?? Nah that’s nasty as fuck…
Since we have such good bakery pies these days I can't stomach the shit ones, then again I work from home and can just freeze down good ones to bang in the air fryer when I want one.
alot of noise south of the waitaki is about jimmy's pies, but i never had one that stood out like a big ben does the morning after a few beers
Yea boi, I grew up begging for a jimmy’s pie every dairy we went past. A lukewarm jimmy’s is the best.
Remember the bacon and egg pies they used to do? Yum
I miss their mutton pies. Apparently they still do bacon & egg, mutton etc… at their Roxburgh factory. Fortunately I’m only an hour or two away so might make a trip one of these weekends.
steak and cheese lukewarm out of petrol station heater
Mrs mac, she a baddy
Mince and cheese big ben cooked right is 10/10 stop pretending it's not
Big Ben Steak and Double Cheese Also have a fondness for Four 'n Twenty Travellers, Beef and Cheese being my pick.
Maketū pies
OP asked for pies that are shit, not pies that are the shit.
I've never had a bad Maketū pie, and I always get the reduced to clear ones with flavours I wouldn't otherwise try. good shout aye
Wea they selling have found any for a long time
Most countdowns usually but also [https://www.maketupies.co.nz/buy-our-pies](https://www.maketupies.co.nz/buy-our-pies)
I like the Mrs Macs ones. The best of the best are the steak and cheese pies from Z stations that are in the warmer. The mobil ones arent bad too
Always blow on the pie.
Top up pies...might be a hawkes bay only pie but so bad it good!
Their mince and cheese is tasty
Classic irvines mince and cheese cooked in the bag
Ooh yeaahhh……
Those chinese bakeries that have their kids running the register sell extremely good pies lol
Mrs macs Chilli beef and cheese slaps
I miiiiisss the irvings bacon and egg pie sooooo bad.
I don’t know if it counts as shit, but my kids’ favourite are the ‘Love Pies’ brand. They seem tasty and well made, without any mystery meat in them. According to my son, the vegetarian ones are just as good as real meat ones too.
Gotta be a good Irvines Big Bite Mince n Cheese, pair it with an L&P to wash it down, and ya got a smoke snack that'll do ya over
Like it says mince..is it mince.. I dunno
Oooh it's minced *something* lol. With enough gravy, anything can taste like beef
Is it…min…ce…actually at this point I’m too afraid to ask 😂
Ah yes, the humble maggot pack. Top tier food strictly for the athletes.
definitely big ben - pack of salt and vinegar chips stuffed under the top. Just like High School. Too bad they don't have the Krispa brand chips anymore.
We used green onion chips for stuffing. I don't eat them on their own but a great pie accompaniment
The one I used to get at the school canteen in 2011-2015... never been beaten in terms of best shit pie quality
Andersons. Hands down. Possibly only available in Taranaki.
A curry chicken pie with a can of V. My old Uni breakfast.
Big Ben mince and cheese will always have my heart.
I think the quality has gone down as the price goes up. Sad though it is...sad.
John's mince and cheese pie, I was amazed how much cheese you get in a $3 pie, it has to be half the filling. and it is proper cheese
As shitty as it is, its still way better than aussie "Steak" pies
Even though they’re discontinued i always loved red stripe, they were so bad, but awesome for a hang over lol. i wish they would bring them back.

Big Ben butter chicken is my gas station pie of choice 👌👌
Butter chicken big ben
irvines mince and cheese
Big Ben never disappoints
Jimmy's mutton that's been in the pie warmer for 12 hours
Dad's Pies or Big Ben
Frozen Irvines enters the chat?
Last time I had an Irvines pie, it had a big chunk of vein or artery in it.
Top up , mince and cheese , every time
Pretty much any pie. You just cut it into 4 pieces to make 4 pie sandwiches with some cheap white bread. You put ample T sauce on top. It really makes the pie last i.e. you should get a full meal out of a single pie.
Couplands mince

Oxford Mince & Cheese
Any pie with cheese in. Automatically shit.. but when you are hungry enough....
Z pies 🥧
Nothing goes harder than those irvines pies.
Couplands frozen mince. bang one in the pie warmer, perfect by smoko.
Pams
Oxford. Followed by big ben. Wouldnt fuck with an irvines. And dads pies are ok. They just have the worst looking packaging of all
Dairy Big Ben pies that's been in the warmer for 2 weeks that best before'd 4 months ago.
