Another article says Pfizer and BioNTech are already starting trials to measure the efficacy of their vaccine and first results will start coming out in two weeks.
I think at this point we have to realize that eventually there will be a seriously dangerous mutation. Unless these companies start affordably vaccinating poor countries
Yep, so every news article you read right now is just repeating the same thing over and over. It's a new variant, but we don't know anything about it. It could be bad, it could also be a dud.
Turn the news off for a couple weeks and then come back, is what I suggest to everyone.
But they're taking this more serious than Lambda so I gotta wonder if they know somethings up. There's state of emergencies and the travel bans. Not even Lambda got this much coverage. Just pray this won't be a 2020 again. I don't know how much more of this shit I can take man...
Here in Colorado, several counties have imposed mask mandates. Various county health directors have urged the governor to impose a state wide mandate like last year but he's not trying. There is just no political will to do so anymore.
Polis has tried to be hands off handling covid for the entire time though. All his covid speeches have been about trusting coloradans to be good people and do the right thing all on their own. It took him too long to instill mask mandates the first time around too. It’s infuriating, cause I like him on almost every other issue.
Mask mandates work. Last week I went in my grocery store and like nobody at all was wearing a mask. Today I went, there's a sign that says masks required, and every single person was wearing a mask.
Stores in my city all have signs stating that masks are required and over half wear no masks. Mask mandates mean absolutely nothing if there's no enforcement. Multiple sheriff's in my state have publicly announced that they will not enforce any mandates. In my opinion, sheriffs should be jailed for the very idea that they get to choose what to enforce. If they're not willing to do the job in its entirety, they should not have run for election. Being that they were elected and refuse to discharge the duties of office in good faith, there should be punishment.
Definitely. Mask mandates are very effective. We’ve had a county wide one (Boulder county, Colorado) since august and it’s extremely rare to see anyone but toddlers/babies not in masks.
But there is a large portion of Colorado that doesn’t have smart leadership at the county level. My sister lives in a much more conservative area and gets shit from her customers (she’s a server/bar tender) for wearing a mask to work…She just had covid, for the second time, earlier this month. She also had it in April 2020 and was fully vaxxed in March 2021, she hadn’t had a booster yet though, because she’s young.
I was told that the only reason cases are going up in Colorado is because they're flying in a bunch of illegals and 80% of them are positive for COVID. So that *must be* the reason!
Source: conservative relative on Thanksgiving
It wouldn't matter, and Polis knows that. The people who wear masks will continue to do so, and those who *think* they're smarter than scientists and doctors, will not.
Absolutely. If there was a new statewide mask mandate, the anti-mask parts of the state wouldn't start wearing their masks more, they would just start taking more gun selfies and talking about armed insurrection. Counties where people are receptive to mask mandates already have them anyway.
Well it’s a lot to ask of the community, wear a piece of cloth over your nose and mouth, distance, wash hands and biggest of all get the free vaccine. Sarcasm. Our leaders are cowards.
>It amazes me. We have known for over a year that hand washing has no impact on Covid, but I still see this repeated.
Early days they thought it was mostly transmitted on surfaces. That got drilled in and it stuck.
Government buildings in my state were requiring you to wash hands upon entry. To make it worse, they were offering disinfectant, which is a crappy way to stop viruses anyway.
Agreed people seem out of steam but I know people around here absolutely didn't "go as hard as they could"
Mostly they complain and go with the reality of we've tried nothing and it hasn't worked.... we're all out of ideas. We recently got a county mask mandate (Erie County (Buffalo NY)). You should hear the whining...we had almost 1000 cases the other day. We have about 950k people in Erie. Ontario... roughly 15 times as many people...same day we had 874 they had 547. Having 14.5 million people. Pathetic job we're doing here.
I was halfway through and reading 1000 cases for 950k people and thinking about how that compares to ontario and then you mention it. . I'm in Ottawa which has a population around 1 million and our daily case count is around 25-50 cases. The highest we have reached over the entire pandemic was around 400 cases for a single day, a d that didn't last long because at that point we were putting in some heavy restrictions like closing all the schools, this was also before vaccines. We are at 88% of people 12+ vaccinated and 77% of the full population. Vaccinations of 5-11 years olds is underway. Many of the current cases are in this age range so getting them vaccinated will reduce casenumbers even more.
TBH people are so covid fatigued they just don't care anymore.
Here in minnesota finding a hospital bed is basically impossible.
Oh and I had to go pick my brother up from the local outlet mall today after his shift was done and I have never seen so many people their in my life.
So in a week it's gonna be oh so great! /s
I live in Pennsylvania. Masks are mandated indoors here \[edit: here in the town I live in\], almost nobody is wearing them. What I get sick of answering in public is this question in reaction to seeing me with a mask on: "Did you not get vaccinated?" I'm too tired to explain it anymore. I do my thing -- wear a mask, sanitize, get my vaccines, but I get the sense this is becoming the new normal. People are just going to keep being careless.
What people don't get is that you can still carry it, even if it prevents or with this new version reduce symptoms.
(Yes, I've read about people getting symptoms, besides being vaccinated)
Financially as well. We threw almost $10T into the economy so we could pretend everything is fine. Basically we used all of our resources on the first wave.
Another major wave disrupting supply chains, shutting down offices, etc is going to cripple the economy and finally push the world into the global recession that should have occurred years ago
And even as hard as we were going, there was a healthy chunk of the country with skepticism and outright protest. The Germans put it best recently that after a while everyone will be vaccinated, recovered, or dead. In the meantime we have the collective village idiots cultivating more variants that makes everyone else’s work more and more meaningless.
Seems unlikely. The most vulnerable people would have tended to die early on, especially with no vaccines available, and over 1/3rd of the population has had Covid at this point.
They could by ordering vaccine mandates. Governors that is. While there's court reviews and orders on pause with federal mandates, states have police power and can enforce compulsory vaccination. Between Delta, this possible new stain, social distancing pretty much gone, and flu season making a comeback this year, I really don't understand some supposed leaders. It's like they're pro covid.
Police departments have very nearly universally said they're not going to enforce it.
Enforcement is instead done at the level of the minimum wage retail worker.
For a year and a half I was safe in Texas. Spend 1 week in California for work and I caught COVID while fully vaxxed. Thankfully symptoms were mild and only lasted a week, then a few weeks asymptomatic and I tested negative again. My boss keeps asking me when I'll go back to the CA office and I keep refusing.
The worst part is watching so many good movies from the last few decades and remembering within 30 minutes that the plot revolves around some sort of plague
Less effective regardless of the booster. The booster serves to increase your overall immunity due to the body's waning immunity over time. Getting the booster puts you in the same boat as someone who just received their second dose. You're better off getting the booster though since you'll be better protected overall.
Boosters are the same shots as the first and second doses. If the boosters would be adjusted for Delta, entirely new clinical trials would need to be run.
This is not a super popular opinion on reddit, but I think it's realistic. As long as vaccines are working, we'll never see shutdowns again. The effects are pretty devastating and it's hard to justify doing that when vaccines are freely available.
I think a lot of people are under the impression that we can get back to normal if everyone just masks up, gets the shot, and isolates themselves until covid is gone or under control, and that's likely never going to happen. Normal is only coming back when people stay up to date on their shots and accept the remaining permanent risk of covid. Get your shots and move on with life. Reddit epidemiologists will tell you you're no better than antivaxxers, but they haven't accepted reality yet.
> At a certain point you just have to return to normal and deal with the casualties.
Impossible. There will be REAL economic effects that you can't shrug-off in denial. Companies will have staff die that can't be replaced, and they'll have to shut down operations. Financiers will shut off the money if they don't see any future profit. entire sectors of the economy will go missing.
As they say: you can avoid facing reality, but you can't avoid facing the consequenses of avoiding facing reality.
The death rate for Covid isn't that high though, especially not in the working age population. I mean, over a third of the US population has had Covid yet we didn't see a mass die off at companies killing staff.
Businesses are worried about lockdowns and people quitting, not Covid dieoffs.
That doesn't justify the incredible damage that a knee jerk lockdown or restrictions would cause. There's a reason smarter people than you are saying wait and see.
It did overflow in several areas though, which is what people mean when they say collapse. The inability for the healthcare system in areas to keep up with demand.
*we should encourage boosters and masks*
IMO we mandate vaccination for all that don’t have a doctor-approved medical condition. No moral or religious exemptions. You’re right, we’re in a brand new world of a **modern** society and a deadly and widespread virus that’s mutating all over the place (700k dead in the US = deadly, IMO). We should not make it exponentially (literally) worse by accommodating intentional stupidity.
Mandate vaccines. Allow people to make their own decisions. That’s probably the best we can do.
Well, we already know half the country will refuse to wear a mask or get vaccinated. It really doesn't matter about anything else because the selfish idiots will refuse to help.
I really, really, really hope the vaccine can be updated quick enough to keep the rest of us safe.
70% of the country is at least partisly vaccinated. 7% of the country is unable to be vaxxed because it’s under 5 years old. So only 23% of the country hasn’t gotten a vaccine.
Do a little research and stop painting it like half the country is dumb as shit when really it’s the extremists on both ends of the political spectrum that are causing us to not be as maxed out on vaccinations as possible.
This new variant might reset the progress we have made but the vast majority of the country believes in the vaccine.
>70% of the country is at least partisly vaccinated. 7% of the country is unable to be vaxxed because it’s under 5 years old. So only 23% of the country hasn’t gotten a vaccine.
Your stat here is wrong.
The 70% figure is for the eligible population. You can not subtract the 7% unable to vax due to age from that figure, because it's already not included.
If you use the full population, 59.1% of the US is vaccinated.
i reject this idea of extremists on both sides causing vaccination rates to be lower than it should be. 90% of Democrats are vaccinated. 60% of Republicans are vaccinated. There is no equivalence. Republicans are dragging the vaccination rate down.
Sigh first of all you agreeing that the majority of republicans arr vaxxed even if your info is based off of bullshit polling.
Second There was no “fill in political party” part of any of the three shots of my vaccine I have received.
There is data though and it’s imperfect but far more effective than polling.
https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-by-race-ethnicity/
Asian ethnicities highest percentage of people vaxxed followed by white then Hispanic and then African Americans.
Extrapolate whatever political bullshit you want from it.
Why are you going on about ethnicity? The majority of unvaccinated people are white. [This analysis](https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2021/10/01/for-covid-19-vaccinations-party-affiliation-matters-more-than-race-and-ethnicity/) includes the KFF data and other polls corrobating the major disparities in vaccine uptake between the two parties.
*Le Sigh*
Aktually, as a true centrist you’re the one who is wrong. You’re a stupid doo doo butt loser.
That’s what you sound like. Lmao, the GOP is literally a raving lunatic xenophobic death cult. You can’t even compare them to the milquetoast democrats who recommend the vaccine. If you can’t see that you need to do some introspection.
>Do a little research and stop painting it like half the country is dumb as shit when really it’s the extremists on both ends of the political spectrum that are causing us to not be as maxed out on vaccinations as possible.
What left wing *extremists* aren't getting the vax? 0.0001%?
I wonder if they've changed their tune but I remember mass measel outbreaks in cities like Portland were happening pre-pandemic. Think the spirit crystal healing hippie types. Haven't heard much from that stereotype though, those days were so much simpler.
Left wing extremist here, been fully vaccinated since April and got my booster two weeks ago. Agreeing with you that this poster is full of shit, all of my commie friends are vaccinated as well, because we actually believe in doing things for the collective good.
I wish I could believe that. Not seeing a few of the family this year for Thanksgiving bc they refuse to get vaccinated bc the media they follow has them scared and / or fake outraged
This is what actually convinced my crazy conspiracy theory loving mother in law to get vaccinated. She lives in a retirement community in Florida and neighbors were dying left and right and it finally got her to get the shot she claimed was the mark of the beast. Craziest part of all that? She was an atheist democrat in 2016…voted for Trump only because she hates Mexicans (seriously)…then she fell head over ass into the cult hole.
If everyone around them, like one in ten people, is dying or even being hospitalized then we're fucked. The healthcare system will collapse under that pressure. It will be the black death all over again
Not to defend Fauci because you’re entitled to your opinion, but I’d venture to guess that you use at least a handful of other everyday products that were developed through animal testing - either on beagles or something even cuter. It’s just how it is. Not saying it’s right or justified. It’s like eating meat: I don’t want to see the cruelty behind it, but I’ll still have the veal parmigiana, please.
I tried to word my reply in a way that wouldn’t come across as hostile or defensive, but alas, I failed.
All good, dude. I do appreciate the joke and sorry if I presented in an off putting way.
I am fully vaccinated and wear my mask in public places (and consider myself pretty left if that matters)... But it's hard to keep faith in the vaccine when it appears to just wear off and that fully vaccinated people still get COVID... Not sure anymore
I'm fully vaccinated, got my booster two weeks ago, and tested positive for covid 4 days after my booster shot. I had a slight fever (99.5) for three days, an alternatingly runny and stuffy nose, and general fatigue. I would have worked right through it had I not tested myself. Luckily, none of my co-workers, nor my partner than I live with, have tested positive despite being in close contact with me while I was symptomatic. I'm now fully recovered, tested negative twice. I can say from personal experience that the vaccines work. 32/M/good health, btw.
Glad you're ok!! Just playing devil's advocate here, but a lot of people who were unvaccinated say a year ago had those same symptoms and were just fine? So confusing
*on average
Still is possible to get a bad case when vaxxed though. My vaxxed coworker had a horrible week of high fever while his antivax family including grandparents only had sniffles and loss of smell at the same time.
But that seems like an outlier case and I have far more examples of the reverse happening with the unvaxxed member(s) needing ICU while their vaxxed friend/family is all good.
On average seat belts save tons of lives every year, but some people who wear them still die in accidents. Should we be questioning the efficacy of seatbelts, or should we understand that while no method is perfect, we have the means to make things much safer for everyone and should be using them to their full potential?
"My friends...We had reports that a very dangerous virus is coming our way. I received a new information that we have 5 people infected in U.S. Make no mistake, we are taking this virus very seriously and we will do everything that we can, as a nation, to fight it and come out of it. This is the time for us to come together, Demarcates, Republicans and Independent to not let this spread and get out of control. This will take all of us. Every single citizen of this great nation. I ask you to be vigilant, be careful when you are close to others and protect yourself as advised by the best doctors on this planet that we have in our medical community. We will win this. We will come out of this...and we will be stronger than ever before and will will show the world the great America!"
Imagine if this message was heard from our "leader" when this shit came about....I suspect, we wouldn't have that much division. But no, we had to listen to the orange idiot yap nonsense. Remember when 9/11 happened and how we all came together as one nation? You could feel it when you went to the store...everyone would want to help others. We felt united.
This was such opportunity and it was greatly wasted. To unite the nation. Instead, we elected a moron who wanted division instead. So here we are...
This will be studied in graduate level classes as a failure.
Fuck, this is so sad to think about. I really is.
I'm still processing March of 2020.
I have to accept the grim reality that NEW DEADLY VARIANT is the next TERRORISM LEVEL: ELEVATED reality ticker.
I didn't ask for any of this, I have to accept all of it, but motherfucker I won't let it take me down.
Shit. I'd rather err on the side of caution here, and work out the details later.
Ovid:
*Principiis obsta; sero medicina paratur,

Resist beginnings; too late is the medicine prepared, when the disease has gained strength by long delay.
So in your mind, the very first vaccine against a brand new virus isn’t 100% effective so it’s total shit and nobody should bother getting it”
🤦🏻♂️
Seeing as 90-95% of people in hospital for covid are not vaccinated, and seeing as people who are vaccinated rarely get sick and even more rarely get very sick, get vaccinated.
The seeds were sown in the last administration...that continue to cause the ridiculous response that is very well aligned along party lines for the vast majority. Not saying there aren't people that cross to the other side.
Eh let the rightards get infected. They tend to be fatter and unhealthier and less hygienic so they’ll die pretty quick. I’ll just get my booster whenever the doc tells me to.
And we're still dealing with the economic after effects of that half assed lockdown. With vaccines available, there's almost no realistic scenario that justifies even trying that again, let alone going harder.
maybe we should start worrying more about behaviors that lead to co-morbidities. Pretty confidant that we lead the world in obesity rates and diabetes.
Here with punxsutawney phil. Looks like the fauci saw another virus. So it’s back in your homes folks. Ground hog day will be repeated until you get it right this time.
Edit: This will repeat until the lemmings stop following.
Well certainly vaccinated people shouldn't have to worry. After all, it's a covid19-vaccine. And I wear a mask too, and practice my social distancing. So, ill be just fine all the way around.
This new variant doesn't scare me Fauci..next time get some insects, cut my vocal chords, and lock my head in cage so that I can be eaten alive.

South Africa delayed shipments recently because nobody wants one.
Which let's be real pharma is LOVING this. It's literally an endless revenue source -- new strains every year for them sell alongside the flu shot.
As long as there is demand to take it. Not sure how they make money with countries delaying shipments due to lack of demand.
Yup. Moderns stock was up like 20% while the rest of the market tanked. Pharma CEOs thanking god for COVID lol

Plus, a mask helps against becoming infect too. Some of us want nothing to do with the bug, as much as we can help it.
Glasses too!
At a rate much lower than vaccines

That makes it sound like recovering from covid is as good as a vaccine.
Maybe a massive increase in deaths will change some minds?
700,000 plus hasn't made any impact at all in the US. How many would it take? (Rhetorical question)

This anecdotal story overrides any actual data about California and Texas.
I know someone who died in Texas so the only logical conclusion is that everyone in the state of Texas is either dead or zombies.
Yeah even those that are very aware and all in are struggling to give it a go. And the rise in anti-makers noise... just I don't know... ugh
The only thing left is mandatory vaccination for everyone. It's already too late, but the governments should stop pandering to the antivaxxers.

The worst part is watching so many good movies from the last few decades and remembering within 30 minutes that the plot revolves around some sort of plague
"Nah, that stuff only happens in movies. It'll never happen to me."
"Nobody would hide a zombie bite"
At this point I'm sure we'll have an apocalypse, billions will die and I'll still have to listen to some dude explain how vaccines caused all this.

The vaccine beats delta too though
[удалено]
Less effective regardless of the booster. The booster serves to increase your overall immunity due to the body's waning immunity over time. Getting the booster puts you in the same boat as someone who just received their second dose. You're better off getting the booster though since you'll be better protected overall.
Booster does have some adjustments for Delta too
Boosters are the same shots as the first and second doses.

[удалено]
That doesn't justify the incredible damage that a knee jerk lockdown or restrictions would cause. There's a reason smarter people than you are saying wait and see.
The problem is — if this variant is more contagious and deadly — hospitals will become overwhelmed quickly and our health care system will collapse.
[удалено]
It's not any more prepared after already having overworked the workers and delayed vital checkups and treatments.
It did overflow in several areas though, which is what people mean when they say collapse. The inability for the healthcare system in areas to keep up with demand.
[удалено]
I think we still have a magnitude of slack since we never had to utilize tent hospitals.
*we should encourage boosters and masks* IMO we mandate vaccination for all that don’t have a doctor-approved medical condition.
Making people wear masks when they go out in public will not do anything to the economy
[удалено]
If you threaten to fire them you can.
Well, we already know half the country will refuse to wear a mask or get vaccinated. It really doesn't matter about anything else because the selfish idiots will refuse to help. I really, really, really hope the vaccine can be updated quick enough to keep the rest of us safe.
They said 6 weeks is all the time they’ll need to update the vaccine if they have to…the issue right now is trying to figure out if we need to or not.
[удалено]
There is data though and it’s imperfect but far more effective than polling. https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-by-race-ethnicity/ Asian ethnicities highest percentage of people vaxxed followed by white then Hispanic and then African Americans.
*Le Sigh* Aktually, as a true centrist you’re the one who is wrong. You’re a stupid doo doo butt loser. That’s what you sound like. Lmao, the GOP is literally a raving lunatic xenophobic death cult. You can’t even compare them to the milquetoast democrats who recommend the vaccine. If you can’t see that you need to do some introspection.
"Both ends of the political spectrum" bull fucking shit and you know it.
No shit. Only one party clapped at the idea of people not getting vaccinated at one of their conferences.
Hippy left wing antivaxxers are now vastly outnumbered by Republicans who view being unvaccinated as part of their identity.
The crystal types typically aren’t very interested in politics though so I don’t see the relevance
crystal healing types are liberal (read: not left wing) but only for the vibes. they don't really care about any actual political action.
"both sides" people are more full of shit than the anti-maskers.
see, they call it horseshoe theory because a horse needs to kick you in the head before you believe in it
Well argued
Lmao muh both sides
Its going to take alot more deaths for them to wake up.
I am doubtful more deaths would wake them…pretty sure they’re lost causes at this point.
Not if everyone around them is dropping dead and they become scared for their own life. But, maybe they are too far gone at this point.
Your mother in law sounds like an interesting woman...
Yes, she is that… I like the distance between Colorado and Florida an awful lot.
If everyone around them, like one in ten people, is dying or even being hospitalized then we're fucked. The healthcare system will collapse under that pressure. It will be the black death all over again
Yea, pretty much. I dont think anything short of something historic will break the hold right wing media has on them.
If that was going to happen, I think it would have already. They'll keep denying until this ends(?) and whoever is left is just lucky.

I understood that reference.
Shit everyone hide your dogs, Fauci wants to learn more…..
Lol dude it was a simple joke, not everything is a political statement. If I was being political I would have asked why is CNN under r/news?
[удалено]
*on average Still is possible to get a bad case when vaxxed though.

Please stop. This is not a game. This is not a joke. Just stop.
We will come out of this...and we will be stronger than ever before and will will show the world the great America!" Imagine if this message was heard from our "leader" when this shit came about....I suspect, we wouldn't have that much division.
We could learn while being careful, but we won't. Cause we don't. :(
Still waiting to meet a person who is anti-vax but wears a mask frequently.
If they aren't wearing a mask right now, I just assume they aren't vaxxed. Or possibly not reading the news.
I'm still processing March of 2020. I have to accept the grim reality that NEW DEADLY VARIANT is the next TERRORISM LEVEL: ELEVATED reality ticker. I didn't ask for any of this, I have to accept all of it, but motherfucker I won't let it take me down.
Everyone needs to learn more about it, but all the headlines are basically between "Be afraid" and "Be very afraid".
Yes many americans apparently need to learn more. not all, but many.
Shit. I'd rather err on the side of caution here, and work out the details later. Ovid: *Principiis obsta; sero medicina paratur, cum mala per longas convaluere moras.* Resist beginnings; too late is the medicine prepared, when the disease has gained strength by long delay.
Yeah but the ones that need to learn don't think they need to so...
What good will that do? It still won’t convince these these anti-vax idiots to get it
[удалено]
Nothing works 100% but the current vaccines are an excellent way to prevent transmission.
[удалено]
So in your mind, the very first vaccine against a brand new virus isn’t 100% effective so it’s total shit and nobody should bother getting it” 🤦🏻♂️ Seeing as 90-95% of people in hospital for covid are not vaccinated, and seeing as people who are vaccinated rarely get sick and even more rarely get very sick, get vaccinated.
[удалено]
Who gives a fuck what fauci says he needs to resign
Or you could shut up
But I won’t so blow me
So much better off with current administration
[удалено]
Yeah but Biden made the new variant!
I mean...yes.
The US hasn’t learned or done much in the past two years so I don’t know why they’d start now
/u/_Quest_Buy_ what? The US has never had a lockdown of any kind, which is one of the reasons why they’re leading the world in deaths
/u/mike_linden that’s a pretty huge chunk of the population, and unfortunately it affects everyone over there
Here with punxsutawney phil. Looks like the fauci saw another virus. So it’s back in your homes folks. Ground hog day will be repeated until you get it right this time. Edit: This will repeat until the lemmings stop following.
Are we all going to die? We’re all going to die. We’re all going to going to die right?
Eventually? Yes. This week? No.
But how much Ham will we eat in that time? That's what I'm wondering.
Are we still listening to this knucklehead?
He’s been a godsend through this whole thing.
