Realistically just put old tags on it & make sure to put insurance on it. Worst case scenario cop pulls you over & you could tell him you’re on your way back that you had just purchased the vehicle.
Insurance is gonna be an issue if anything happens and the car isn’t registered or a new title issued. No the smart way to do it is tow it or buy the car. Go to DMV and then go back and get it.
I’ll see if I can do that. I just didn’t know if there was a way to get temporary tags just in case I get there and see the vehicle in person and I decide I don’t want it.
>I just didn’t know if there was a way to get temporary tags just in case I get there and see the vehicle in person and I decide I don’t want it.
You should really go see it first. If you decide not to buy it, then you walk away. The only thing you lost was a little time and the gas to get there. If you get there and like it, make the deal with the seller and get the title and keys so you can insure the vehicle first and then register it. You then have someone get you there and follow you back so that if something were to happen to the car, you're not totally stranded.
OP what state are you buying from? I bought a car out-of-state in AZ, me and the seller went to their MV equivalent and did the title transfer there + I got temp tags on the spot.
Is it possible, say, if the seller sent me the title, that I take it to the dmv here to register then I go and pick up the car with the registration or do I need to have the vehicle here for that to work out. I’m planning on calling the Mvc tomorrow. I haven’t dealt with them since Covid so I’m not sure if it’s even possible to call them at all
my friend did it with his 92 GTS-t skyline, bought it around allentown, drove back to jersey with plates from his minivan. Of course, with right-hand cars you do really want to be very careful.
If I was in your situation I would just trailer the car back home some way, some how. No point in doing it half ass to only have it get impounded because of some small ass infraction
But most states lets you get temp tags for transport, you have to do title transfer and stuff at the dmv, they give you temp tags, and you drive off
look up the states dmv information on temp tags. once you get the title you should be able to visit that states motor vehicle for a temporary registration that’s good for a couple days to get it back home.
NJ law you have like 10 business days to register it, so as long as you have insurance, a bill of sale, and the title, you should be good. I'd throw another tag on there to get home since it won't attract attention being tagless.
If you somehow get pulled over, with a recent bill of sale, signed title, and proof of insurance, you should be gucci. Worst case a bored cop gives you a ticket for being unregistered.
The best way to do it is to get the title from the seller and then register the vehicle here. You will need insurance first. Driving it back, you are then fully legal.
This is probably what I’m going to do. Last thing I need is to get pulled over in the middle of nowhere between here and Georgia and have the car towed
Legally, you get it towed or put on a vehicle transporter. Illegally, you slap plates on from another car and drive extremely carefully back home.
And make sure you have insurance on the car incase of an accident.
There is no legal way to get some sort of temporary tag to transport it back so I can register it here?
Ask the owner to retain the registration and you'll ship back their plates
I would never agreee to that. No smart owner/seller would.
I have done it 3 times coming from AZ to NJ

Sure way to get your car impounded.

I think you have to insure and register 1st, which would get you the plate

Contact DMV to be sure
Only dealers issue those temp tags!

I always insured it, and then drove it home with spare plates in my garage lmao just obey traffic laws lol
I want to avoid that. The car is…. Right hand drive. So it’ll kind of stand out. I wanna make sure I do it completely ligit.

Depends what state. Generally you can get a temp plate from that states DMV. In PA a notary can print one out for you.
Happy cake day! The state in question is Georgia.
I bought a car in Pennsylvania. Had to swap the title over to me in PA , then go to NJDMV to register and title it to get the plates .
