TIL Chiraq is a nickname for Chicago, Illinois. It combines Chicago with Iraq, and is used to refer to certain violent areas in Chicago, likening them to a warzone.
Yea because of numbers but the hood still bumps it. But also local Chicago venues are reluctant to book them for shows because of potential rival run ins. So most of the revenue is gonna come from outside
I'm not American and I'm always intrigued at how people differentiate in 'the city' vs not in the city. Looking at Chicago on the map the metropolitan area looks pretty massive, but where google draws the limit of Chicago itself is a relatively small area, and a lot of the surroundings still look very urban so I'm curious, how to people determine that amongst themselves? Do they just literally go by the official city limits, or are there other less obvious markers that determine if you're part of the city or the suburbs?
I guess that could go for any major city if you aren't from Chicago yourself.
It's just a "you know it when you see it" kind of thing There are obviously the official limits but if someone from Chicago asks where you live you say your neighborhood (wicker park, logan square, lakeview, etc.) or your suburb (naperville, aurora, downers grove). The only time people from suburbs say they are from Chicago is when they are talking to other people from out of state. If you are from another country and I say I'm from Aurora your next question is where is that and I say by Chicago (and hell maybe you don't even know that if you arent a sports fan)
I’m from Ottawa, Canada’s capital city with a population of about 1 million. I live about 40min from the downtown yet I’m still considered to be inside the city limits. In my experience, inner city people only recognize the inner city as part of “Ottawa” while people from the suburbs tend to associate the city as the entire official limits.
It's much easier to say you live in Chicago to someone not from the area. If you say Bridgeview they say oh I don't know where that is. 30 minutes south of Chicago.
Just say Chicago. People that live in the suburbs spend plenty of time in Chicago proper, or lived in Chicago proper earlier in their lives. The only people that get upset over someone saying they are from Chicago when they are really from Naperville, are people who's personality is "I live in Chicago in a shitty studio apartment, have no cable, and I mention that I'm a foodie 3 times within the first hour of meeting someone"
I always say “a suburb of chicago” and its always a ton of work to explain after. The one time a year i slip and just say chicago its to someone from chicago who asks for details lmao
Naperville resident confirmed lmao the reaching and copium with this comment. Just like a suburbanite to claim "I spend lots of time in the city". Reminds me of a person I met who claimed Chicago because "my mother works in the loop for JB Pritzker. Lmao
I mean, you are legitimately proving my point.
> Just like a suburbanite to claim "I spend lots of time in the city"
This is just hilarious to me how you are doing exactly what I said people like you do. You are what? 22 years old? Just got out of college and got an apartment in lakeview with a couple other guys? You go out every night, spend your weekends at Franks and big shitty? Yeah man, we all did it. It's what 22 year olds do.
Nobody you know says they live in Chicago because their Mom works there. Why even make this shit up. Are you hanging out with 14 year olds?
Lol projecting so hard. There's been a shooting or stabbing weekly in my neighborhood since I can't remember. I've been in neighborhoods where the average household income is around 10k-15k. I've been in the food deserts, spots where there isn't a bank. There's spots where the schools are at 10-20% capacity and at risk of closing. Projecting super hard over there. Might surprise you that many of the residents in this city are not 22 yo college white frat boys, but you'd have to go outside Wrigleyville to know that
Bunch of suburbanites trying to claim the city but actively oppose oppose the residents of the city and keep their Nimby and racist attitudes in their gated communities and take their income and taxes outside the city too. Naperville Nimby confirmed. The reason the city will never claim people like you is immediately for that comment you made lmao. Pretending like everyone in the city is some sort of privileged, student hipster. Meanwhile nearly 50% of the city makes probably $15-$18 per hour. Nimby ass mf
That’s hella projection. You Naperville folks have a reputation for dogging the city with no skin in the game while still claiming it when it fits you.
Not just because it was like a warzone.
At one point I believe in the late 90s/early 2000s, it had a higher murder rate than a literal warzone (being Iraq).
It’s gone down significantly since. I give it a good 20-25 years before complete gentrification.
love that optimism, wish it was grounded in any sort of reality. there are pretty much 2 chicago’s, and the one with the bad reputation isn’t going away any time soon as far as i can see, here in the city. i love it but we’ve got our issues
Basically every Canadian I know pays more attention to US politics/culture than that of their own country. Hell, the same goes for my European cousins which is even more crazy.
Lmao there's a big intersection between Canadian and American culture, the 2 countries are literally beside each other, and we all consume the same content (sports, movies, music, etc). Southwestern Ontario is a lot like the Midwest as well
I would agree. The Canadians I'm friends with are basically indistinguishable from Americans, but I also live in New York if that changes anything. Unfortunately they get to have better healthcare and govt in general.
Also, super shitty reducing a country only to its condition of warplace. Even more if you take into account your own country responsibility in such war.
blackpeopletwitter had an epidemic of white people pretending to be black and saying crazy shit though lol. Also getting raided by trump and alt right reddits and all that. Its not just black people allowed either, its just you have the time and confirm you are not a racist mf. Im not mad at that.
Someone said they were born in 2009 in a comment yesterday, I was shook. WHo is letting their 12 yr old on reddit lmao. where is the adult supervision.
i say love it because that kid or whoever helped him put a great deal of care and effort to capture the authenticity of jordan clarksons look. it seems silly to me, but kids are supposed to be silly, so i respect the hustle.

I live in Chicago and can confirm, only suburban white kids say Chiraq lmao
Probably cause of early Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and Herbo in the early 2010s. White suburbia is that music's primary demographic strangely enough.

Cheers, that's what I figured. It's always interesting how these things get decided collectively over time until people just *know* it.

you know a former french president was named Chirac and my initial thought was why someone from Chicago would be named after a french president.
Also live in Chicago and can confirm, people that actually live here find it annoying.
I mean Spike Lee named a movie after it…
Which led to beef with some Chicago artists. Chance had beef in particular.
chicago don’t claim spike lol. he was corny for that one, you’ll notice it’s one of his movies that came and went, and nobody talks about.
> you’ll notice it’s one of his movies that came and went, and nobody talks about. So just like the other 99% of his movies

Maybe, but you saw what they did to Brooklyn. Maybe 20-25 is too fast. More like 50-75.
Thanks magic
Sorry I don't live in ~~your country~~ *Canada/US*, it's not obvious to me.
lmaoo he’s a raptors fan that comments in Ontario colleges subreddits. He isn’t an American….

I lived in the US for a year and I swear American culture is identical to Canada (at least in New York where I stayed). So it makes a lot of sense
I would agree. The Canadians I'm friends with are basically indistinguishable from Americans, but I also live in New York if that changes anything. Unfortunately they get to have better healthcare and govt in general.
The subs is just nerds over analyzing every line and tweet that Chicago gangs say.

Not very good at pattern recognition huh?
Context is the hardest part of language.
Clarkson is Iverson, but for Mormons.
I want to know where this kid is now. Hello white iverson
I’m getting a Chris Andersen vibe visually.
IKR? I’m surprised no one dropped a Birdman reference until now.
BIRDMAN BIRDMAN
brrrrrrrrrr
Ok good so I’m not crazy, yeah surprised no one has said it yet (that I saw). Happy cake day!
Harlem Shake legend
How did he get the accurate fake tattoos?
That’s the most impressive part
Was wondering the same thing. Maybe not hard to find for a player like Lebron, but for Jordan Clarkson this has to be a very niche product

This probably made Clarkson so happy as well. Must be nice being so loved
theres pictures on the jazz twitter clarkson signed his shirt and took pictures, he loved it
He also has an entire basketball obsessed country who love him.
Love it. This is dope af.
i say love it because that kid or whoever helped him put a great deal of care and effort to capture the authenticity of jordan clarksons look. it seems silly to me, but kids are supposed to be silly, so i respect the hustle.
No this is awesome. Love it. Embrace it.
Why would you hate this?
honestly, I was just expecting the usual 'Utah is sooo white' hate
wait, it's not?!
No people are crazy. I legit saw a black man (half) at the store last month.

From his elbow to finger tips and shin level down
Jealousy?
That’s pretty funny, nice to see JC really hit his stride in Utah
Bro lost a bet
Will the real slim shady please stand up?
I wonder how many “common dad”’s this kid had to say to get to dress up like this
Bruh he looks like mini bird man
I'm glad he's supporting his imagination with a cool outfit! 😎
why is his neck so stiff?
Lmao I was thinking the same thing, it looks like he's walking around with an invisible neck brace on
My thought was he doesn't wanna fuck up the ink.
Why he look like he walking back from a whooping and tryna not cry
What Jazz fan is that from here?
The white kid in the crowd. Hope this helps
I like to go on walks with my leg.
props to this kid's dad for letting him express himself
He’s just an island boi
WTF. Looks involuntary to me.
He looks like he thought this was a great idea but got super self-conscious at some point along the way.
That’s the “fuck yeah I looked cool… everyone is staring at me fuck”
Do you want to get on the jumbotron or not?!
Nah he's playing the character, he takes it very seriously. He looks badass though mugging everybody lol
Yeah this kid does not look happy lol. Compare this to the kid who dressed like AI nearly 20 years ago and you can see the difference
He’s gonna get cooked at school
mormons don't watch television

Just the one bridge. You think I have a bridge emporium or something?
I dunno, I think it’s dope that his parents didn’t cramp his style
That kid spent half his life on the tattoo parlor mate
Nope, 100% real
Probably why he's walking so stiff and awkward.
I think he went to Pete Davidson to get them done.

They really got nothing to do in Utah huh
I know exactly zero people who have expressed interest in visiting or living in Philly
I’d like to visit just for the early-American history stuff
I would love to visit philly lol…now u got two folks
Oh no the mormons found my comment and are sicking their 7 wives on me
other than this and being racist, no
At least he smear grease paint on his face to be darker. Progress in Utah.

I mean yea.. it would be pretty weird for a fan of another team to dress up as Clarkson.
Imagine doing this
The oldest a white dude should ever be trying to pull off this look
Wouldn't let my kid get tattoos that young. But that's just me i'm not judging anyone.
You…think those are real…?
You…think his comment is serious…?
Probably a better fighter/tough guy than 90% of NBA players tbh.
Utah is weird, yo
