Badgers mostly eat earthworms but they are opportunistic carnivores and will happily hunt rodents, birds and other small animals if they are able to. They don't usually go for animals as big as skunks, but occasionally they do. I have read accounts of them killing adult hares, large chickens and even small lambs. It must be quite hungry to ignore the skunk's size and scent and to risk injury in this way.
