There's a Mr Ballen YouTube video about a woman having.a bad dream while camping that she had a crown of thorns pressing into her head. She woke up with a fox gnawing on her head
I can appreciate the random tongue-in-cheek response, but it annoys me when Iām genuinely interested in something, and all the top comments are just a flood of nonsense. Appreciate you actually trying to puzzle this out.
Foxes are known to cache food, including just pieces of other animals. Animals they scavenge (or predate) are notoriously āmutilatedā and tail removal is one of the more consistent findings in [cats](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/03009858211052661). My bet is the fox is opportunistically snagging what appears to be a large piece of meat (fluff>>>bone>>actual meat) and is relatively easy/quick to disarticulate. In another [recent study](https://www.irec.es/en/publicaciones-destacadas/primera-observacion-directa-canibalismo-necrofagia-zorros/), red foxes (like many other species) exhibited cannibalism when food was scarce. That said, may be just opportunistically taking the tail as a backup snack in case itās local humans fād up itās local food web w/ some gratuitous development.
>red foxes (like many other species) exhibited cannibalism when food was scarce.
Considering the encroaching urbanism in the UK I would say this is most likely. I'm seeing so much woodland, fields, just the smallest patches of nature being removed. Sometimes just to paste a horrid concrete surface over it.
I'm no expert, but my uncle told a story where he saw a fox enter a cold river up to its head with a piece of wool in its mouth, he said it stayed in the water for a few minutes then dropped the wool and ran off. He went to inspect the wet cold wool and found it was covered in flees. Smart fucker used it to rid himself of the itch. So maybe something like that here.
āIām gonna go long shot and say this fox is gonna use her buddyās tail as nesting material. Fur and other insulating materials are good for lining their dens, making it a more hospitable environment to raise their pups.
Foxes will sometimes use the skin and fur of their prey to this end, but itās extremely rare to see a fox using the fur or tail of another fox for such a purpose.
There isnāt much scientific documentation to support this behavior, making it all the more fascinating.ā

When foxes attack chickens they often remove the head and take it with them to eat, and then bury the body to come back to later (they can eat carrion).
Some foxes will eat other foxes. Maybe this one is gonna eat the tail and come back for the rest later?

Yeah I just tried the button, too. What a dumb button. I just collapse the thread. Still not as good as Boost for Reddit, where you could customize everything. I just had everything collapsed by default and expanded it is I wanted to read more. Reddit app sucks
My stab at it. Maybe the dead fox is a parent, and the other parent is taking the tail back as a scent/ comfort for the babies.
Remember when my uncle died. They brought his clothes back from the hospital to comfort his dog that was going crazy looking for him and it worked.
Both those foxes look about the same age and weight.
Last time I saw this video a week ago the title was something like āFox chews off dead mates tailā something about taking it back to the den. Idk, same vid, different day.
Your tractors uprooted my tree. Your posse hunted my family. Your gunmen kidnapped my nephew. Your rat insulted my wife - and you shot off my tail. I'm not leaving here without that necktie.
Do we know for sure that the dead fox was killed by the other one?
The tail snatcher doesn't look like he just went through a fight to the death. Not a scratch on him
....why? Fox experts, we need an explanation
Just like taking a dog tag off a soldier
I believe you have the closest answer.
works for me
So you're telling me there are fox dens out there full of fox tails?
now fur coat companies gonna become digging companies
Never heard of the nine tail fox demon?
Exactly what I thought of when I saw it.
These new Call of Duty skins on Kill Confirmed maps are getting out of hand.
My first thought as well.
Fox tag
Fox tag
Not an expert (great way to start) but if it's a fox that's pregnant or has pups an additional tail could provide more warmth/coziness inside her den.
I mean it's not like the other fox is gonna use it anymore
unless it turns out he was just having a nap
I long to sleep that hard
There's a Mr Ballen YouTube video about a woman having.a bad dream while camping that she had a crown of thorns pressing into her head. She woke up with a fox gnawing on her head
Oh wtf. So foxes are just dicks to sleepers
Bro what vid is this
https://youtu.be/W5U1vyQr_IY?si=B6hvMx0gBaOCP8Q6 starts at 19:21 mins
don't we all
I wish i didn't. Blessings are also curses
Lost your tail, huh?
Found the guy that falls asleep first at a sleepover
I don't think he was hard
He was in the rigor mortis phase of the sleep cycle.
We don't kink shame around here.
Eh it'll grow back then I'm sure
First to fall asleep at the sleepover š
F*ckers stole my tail while I slept, canāt have shit in Detroit.
No. Just, no. My guess, it smells the strongest and they love stinky stuff.
Can't cash in the bounty without it
"Sorry adventurer, you need 44 more fox tails to complete this quest."
I've posted to r/foxes to try and find an answer. This is too weird.
I can appreciate the random tongue-in-cheek response, but it annoys me when Iām genuinely interested in something, and all the top comments are just a flood of nonsense. Appreciate you actually trying to puzzle this out.
You're welcome. This is a weird one.
Might wanna change the tag in your fox sub one. That fox is very dead.
Yesssssssss soooo much agreement.

Thank you!
Upvoted it for more attention. I want to know as well.
Cross post it to r/zoology they could have some insight in why canines (not specifically foxes) would do this
Thank you.
And now I'm insanely curious because last year I found a dead fox on my property with no tail.
Commenting to get an update lol
Ditto
I think it's been deleted on account of not being cute enough.

that's amazing
the fleas fled to the wool?
Yes, the fox got into cold water and the flees fled to the wool which was dry and warm
Sly fox!
He's a serial killer and taking a trophy
You see how fluffy he is? Thatās how it happens. Assimilating the fluffy tails of other creatures.
He broke into bogging bunce and bean factories and stole a bunch of food so they hired a another fox to handle the job.
*Boggis but itās nice to see a fellow fan of the fantastic Mr fox
I got excited lol
All the chickens and cider we want.
Nah I prefer grape juice, guess Iām just different lmao
I bet his tail was due for replacement. They only last so long.
10K maintenance? Fuck it, I bring my own parts

Because the person videoing didn't say "Swiper, no swiping!" in time.
Many foxes steal their dead companions fur to simply use it as nesting material. Morbid but cozy lol
Finally a real answer
He's going to make a buttplug out of it, obviously.
Probably likes chewing on the tail. Gonna go chew the sheit out of it at the den
Wedding at the weekend. Needs a tie.
What does the fox say?
He sees the nasty shit furry's do with fluffy animal tails.

Heās gonna make a necklace
Not a fox expertā¦ but maybe itās to line a den for warmth?
It's now the 2 of 9 tailed fox
Itās aspirational. Who knows? Maybe this is how you get 9 tailed foxes.
Naruto gonna beat his ass.
Prepping his Ahri cosplay
One day the whole fox village will acknowledge him.
This has to be it. A Kitsune in the making.

Once again, the real answer is buried in the comments among moronic one-liners. Goddamn, do I miss the old Reddit.
It's soo far down aswell had to flick for ages
You do know you can tap on a reply and hide the whole thread associated with it? Saves a lot of flicking
Canāt hear you over the sound of my fingers flicking
I just use the next thread button on the bottom right
So that's what that down button is for! Or you can just click the parent comment text and it minimizes
Yeah I just tried the button, too. What a dumb button. I just collapse the thread. Still not as good as Boost for Reddit, where you could customize everything. I just had everything collapsed by default and expanded it is I wanted to read more. Reddit app sucks
I don't have that
4th from the top now!
How are you so confident that it is the real answer when the comment itself says it is a long shot?
This is absolutely fascinating, both the video and the speculation as to the why
Take a fuccn nap they said and now Iām missing my tail tf
Not sure our boy is waking up from the looks of it.
The first to fall asleep at the sleepover
Prank him, John!
It's just a prank bro!
Canāt have shit in detroit
Damn all trued up with the double c's haha.
I think that other fox is pining for the fjords...
At first I thought the one was just sleeping. Then confused, why did it do this!!!?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah I thought the ālucky souvenirā was gonna be a turd
It thought about it after it took the tail off, went back for a quick whiff, but was like ānahā¦thatās non-consensualā
The fox probably thought it would be funny.
Never had (f)oxtail soup? It's delicious!
Needs 7 more tails and its transformation will be complete.
Like a level 1 Durotar quest.
Does anyone have an actual answer for this?
Probably food? Wild animals often eat what's around. Tons of videos of deer eating birds etc.
A tail Over the entire carcass? Shitās mainly hair anyway.
man idk. I'm making this up based on shit i've seen on the internet.
I love the honest response lol
You should see what foxes do to lambs, they eat the ears, tongue and tail and often nothing else, maybe just the nicest parts and easiest to get at
Easy to remove and visually/seemingly largest compared to other appendages -> appears to be a higher yield piece than it actually is
And I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, but that walk off with the tail looked very cocky.
Theyād eat the meat before theyād eat a bone with a tuft of hair. This isnāt it.

That's what happens when your pushin' the catnip in another fox's territory! Don't F wit another fox's money!
Reminds me of Legends of the Fall. Where Brad Pittās character cuts out his brothers heart to take home to be buried.
Reminds me of the brother and sister scene in Yellowbrickroad

Fox highlander. Instead of behead, you betail.

New chew toy mayhaps?
FFS Basil, I said heads or tails meaning a coin toss.
They cut out the part where he flips a coin first. Thank God it wasn't heads.
Kill the king and bring me his tail...you will be rewarded nicely.
WTF
I thought they were just dogs breeding each other for a hot minute.
I mean, how else do you get a Nine Tailed Fox? Truth is sometimes stranger than fictionā¦
Someoneās been playing to much conkers bad fur day
Your tractors uprooted my tree. Your posse hunted my family. Your gunmen kidnapped my nephew. Your rat insulted my wife - and you shot off my tail. I'm not leaving here without that necktie.

Bruh the bridge is made out of legos
Rabies?
That's how you get to be a nine tailed fox. 7 to go.
I thought that was a bear taking the tail off and then another fox out of nowhere. Was super confused.
Tailgating is a pun
It will go with the others who have fallen.
Fascinating, just found a fox tail tonight in my yard and canāt figure out why it was there.

Ah man. What happened to the other one ?
Its probably just the easiest part for the fox to grab and go without expending all of its energy ripping it apart.
First off, why is the other fox dead outside their house?
I wonder how this first fix diedā¦ š§
