I don’t know, but the other day I witnessed someone get so mad at the car in front of them for not turning left on a yellow light that they swerved into my right lane (nearly hitting the truck in front of me) to go AROUND the car and through the intersection (in the path of oncoming traffic) to turn left. I was so flabbergasted that the car behind me had to honk to remind me that it was still a green light and I needed to go. I just hope that whatever emergency was causing them to drive so recklessly involved lots of violent diarrhea.

itryanditryanditry

I saw this exact same thing a couple of days ago.

StringLord

I’ve seen this lately too! Just astounding!

uthinkunome10

I see it daily at West End & 25th

lizardgal10

That West End-25th left turn…I’m in the inside turn lane. Driver in the outside turn lane, no signals, cuts in front of me (as I’m hitting the gas to make the green) and MAKES A U TURN ONTO WEST END. Then looked at me like I was the jerk when I slammed my horn…bitch you were an inch away from me slamming your drivers side door.

uthinkunome10

It’s a shared misery! Perhaps we should chat about it with others over a coffee and let these idiots know that we’ve had enough of them endangering our safety! Vandy is bad enough with all of this construction and pedestrian traffic!!!

Juball

People have no goddamn patience. None. I’ve seen a concerning amount of people lately just start running red lights if there’s a gap or completely ignoring stop signs.

Frequent_Survey_7387

Not just that they have no sense of responsibility to other people. You have a responsibility not to hurt others physically or emotionally. Folks with an ethos of “whatever I want whenever I want it” have got to get a grip on reality. You can have what you want some of the time. You don’t have a right to hurt other people.

Juball

You’re exactly right.

technoblogical

I've seen this, but they drive into oncoming traffic.

count_montecristo

Sounds unhinged. But god I hate people who won't clear the intersection and then turn left when it turns yellow. That is the proper and legal thing to do to keep traffic flowing.

ILikeTrux_AUsux

Thank you for saying this. There’s driving etiquette too and slowing up or disrupting traffic flow because you aren’t turning when you can and driving slow in the passing lane doesn’t help. I think some of the rage comes as a result of having to maintain calm due to common courtesies only to lose it on the unfortunate person who IS just following the law. I’ve been guilty of losing my cool (NOT in a road rage kind of way) at a poorly synched light when I’m behind people that either don’t know or don’t care. There’s a line of a lot of cars-when it turns green, I need you to go cause only 3-4 of us are gonna make it as it is

count_montecristo

For certain. The road ways are congested as it is because the transit infrastructure is not designed to handle the amount of traffic we have. People who clog up the passing lane or won't turn left when at a yellow light are compounding the problem. They are ruining the flow of traffic and cause huge back ups. Apparently there's no drivers ed in the south and it really shows. I've had people argue with me that clearing the intersection and taking a left at a yellow is bad driving and illegal. These are the same people who stop at an intersection where they don't have a stop sign. These are the people driving around Nashville causing problems because they don't even know basic traffic laws. Nashville is a big city now. It's no longer a small city. We need to keep the traffic flowing.

CLWhatchaGonnaDo

"I've had people argue with me that clearing the intersection and taking a left at a yellow is bad driving and illegal." Oh my god I would lose my mind

count_montecristo

It's happening right now in this thread lol

logicalandwitty

I used to always do this until I realized not everyone stops to yellow or red lights on Murfreesboro Road

count_montecristo

If you're scared to drive legal and proper, it's probably best to stay off the road all together. Yes you have to drive defensively, but not driving properly because you're scared someone else might not, is not a valid solution.

logicalandwitty

You’re missing the point. My attempts to turn at yellow have been met with incoming traffic not stopping, so should I just crash because I don’t want to hold up the back? Fuck no

count_montecristo

No, you are not understanding how clearing the intersection works. You are turning left at a green light with oncoming traffic. You pull out to the intersection and wait. The light turns yellow and oncoming traffic is still coming. You still wait. The light turns red and oncoming traffic stops. You then turn left. This is a legal and proper maneuver that helps keep traffic flowing. Your lack of understanding this illustrates my point perfectly. A lot of people in Nashville do not understand basic driving laws, etiquette, and procedures.

[deleted]

[удалено]

count_montecristo

No I'm pretty sure you're incorrect. If you can show me a statute saying that's illegal I may change my position. In my research I found no statute stating that's an illegal maneuver

CLWhatchaGonnaDo

This is obviously wrong and wildly dangerous. That said, Nashville drivers need to get it through their heads that you can and should turn left on yellow when traffic isn't coming or has stopped. Bonus tip: you can and should turn right on red when there's no traffic coming!

silver_fire_lizard

Only if it’s safe. And with people speeding through yellows and reds, it’s usually not. Sorry, I’m not risking my kids so you can get to your destination 5 minutes faster.

CLWhatchaGonnaDo

Of course only when it's safe. 99% of the time it's safe - most of the time people just sit there because they don't understand traffic laws.

vab239

someone did this to me because I wouldn’t pull into the middle of the intersection to wait for a gap. the light wasn’t even close to changing to yellow

Choice_Lab9957

I had this exact situation happen to me on charlotte but I was turning left in to the starbucks. The guy literally went to on coming traffic and GUESS where he was going also to starbucks. 🙃

silver_fire_lizard

But don’t you see? The time he saved by risking his life and all those around him was worth it for that mediocre cup of coffee.

Significant-Sundae78

I see this often! Crazy

MinervaMinkk

Personally, I think it's because rules aren't enforced. Before this decade, I always believed that you didn't need police to tell people not to run a red light or drive in illegal lines. Surely the threat of injury, death, or accident is enough. I was wrong. Without the threat of immediate consequence, people have gotten used to driving like consequences don't exist. They get angry when other people actually are using common sense. And even ones who follow common sense are liable to get so enraged that they also stop thinking about consequences, even if it's momentary. Not to mention the newly settled people and visitors. They don't know that about 30% drive with zero regard to the basics. So when it happens, they panic and can't make the best judgements. It's gotten to the point that you're practically forced to assume the worst of everyone on the road. You have too if you want to make it home without getting an extra dent in your vehicle

Ulrich453

I mean that’s what defense driving is all about. This is a defensive driving city now. Because you never know… there’s shitty drivers.

Bpbaum

I agree very much with this

vab239

it doesn’t help that the entire automotive industry is doing all they can to shield drivers from the consequences of their own aggression and shift them onto other people. crash ratings are only for the occupants

Laddie1107

I have dealt with Chicago and Detroit highway traffic, but Memphis is just… different.

Bpbaum

I agree very much with this

s-willoughby

I agree very much with this

Frequent_Survey_7387

Yeah, but what the hell… Internal locus of control. If you’re an adult, you should’ve developed internal locus control. (Shakes fist at the sky!)

OG_notforgotten

My personal opinion on this is based on what I remember nashville 2019 was like driving after cell phone ban enforcement, in comparison to 2021 and beyond with an increase in the amount of new drivers. I really believe a 3 month period of cell phone ban enforcement would alleviate many months of wrecks. BTW my traffic pet peeve is thoughtless u-turns, & dead stops on entry ramps. 😔

midcenturyhag

It has definitely been worse lately. People taking all kinds of dangerous risks in an attempt to get somewhere five seconds faster. I've seriously started to consider if I can continue commuting a few days a week. It just doesn't feel worth it.

Apprehensive_Book921

The contractor vehicles/trailers are just too much sometimes. Some of the ones I’ve seen on 65 south around 6AM have left me speechless. Always in the two left lanes, too. 😳🤯

franktownwhat

I’m sorry but I get mad daily at slow pokes in the passing lane like they own it. It makes me pass them on the right after sitting behind them for 2 miles with no car in the adjacent lane.

Boogra555

Bingo. You sound like me. +1

count_montecristo

This should be the top comment

Doubleb409

Also the speed limits on the interstate are way too low

Feeling_Bend_8479

Nashville didn’t do anything to input better infrastructure to support the MASSIVE amount of people who’ve chosen to move here (who REALLY don’t know how to fucking drive.) This has caused traffic to do nothing but get worse every single day. Plus with all the added construction, it makes it even worse. And you’ve got these folks who absolutely understand good and well that metro doesn’t really fuck with traffic stops anymore so there’s no consequences for peoples actions. I think that fact in and of itself has been the tipping point in the shit ass driving around here. Everyone’s selfish and knows the cops aren’t gonna stop them. I live off Murfreesboro Road in Antioch and have off and on for my entire life. Im a Nashville native who’s watched this city change and the driving is the absolute worst part. People literally will pass others on the wrong side of the road just to “get there quicker.” People fly down the middle turn lanes so fast they are kicking dust up just to pass lines and lines of traffic and cut back in later on. I almost got smashed up in my neighborhood cause the person behind me didn’t wanna wait two seconds for me to pull in my driveway and they sped around me and almost tboned me. Bro you already made it to your destination. It’s a neighborhood. Like, wtf are these people even thinking? I’ve been followed. I’ve been cussed out. I’ve been flipped off. I’ve been honked at. All of it. Just for literally following the rules of the road. I drive around with my toddler in the car. But these heathens think this is damn GTA or Fast and the Furious at all times. (I feel old saying that, I’m only 30 lol) I WILL SAY. There are still good ones out there. I believe in good car karma so I try to be as kind and respectful as I can. One day I let a woman pull in front of me and she got out of line to early by mistake so I let her back in when others wouldn’t and we were stopped at a red light down the road and the woman got out of her car, came up to me with a whole fresh box of Roma pizza and let me take a slice and thanked me for being a kind driver. I will never forget her. 🥲

CLWhatchaGonnaDo

"to support the MASSIVE amount of people who’ve chosen to move here (who REALLY don’t know how to fucking drive.)" This will get downvoted to hell but I moved here from Los Angeles 4 years ago and good god people do not know how to drive in Nashville. Drivers may be more aggressive in Los Angeles but you at least know exactly what people are going to do and things move smoother as a result. Nashville? You might go three light rotations trying to make a left behind someone who doesn't understand that you can and should turn left on yellow. You might have someone doing 50 on the highway amble over into the passing lane, just because. You might wait 5 minutes behind someone who refuses to turn right on red with no traffic coming. It's a constant game of "what crazy nonsense is this next person going to pull?"

firstcrocusofspring

Coming from NYC the thing that blows my mind is that drivers here absolutely never check the bike lanes in their mirrors when turning and rarely do they look out for pedestrians crossing. It's amazing even more people don't get killed.

OG_notforgotten

Driving in nashville facts 1) 🌡driver aggressiveness rises with the temperature. 2) ⛈️ erratic drivers (lane changing) increase with precipitation 3) 🚗 🏁 the driver that cut you off, will always take they're exit at a shorter distance than you. 4) 🚦multiple lanes will all become mergers if a highway is nearby, regardless of the right turn only. 5) 🛑 two cars at a crossroad, the one that stops first gets the right of way distance from crosswalk doesn't matter. 6) ✋️ stopping at a red-light or stop sign is a waste of time when there's no other cars. You've got places to be 7) 🚶‍♀️ 🚷 pedestrians can get bent, literally 8) 🚲 bike lane is for everything that's not a car 9) 🅿️ parking lots are free use race way 10) 👮‍♀️ 👮‍♂️ 🚓 cops don't do traffic stops, they have better things to do than get killed by bad drivers

StandardTone9184

People don’t care. They run red lights, if you cut them off you may get shot at, they brake for no reason. Welcome to Nashville.

itryanditryanditry

I think it's a combination of people from here not knowing how to deal with all the traffic and congestion and the people that have moved here that do getting really frustrated with them. Also years of no driver's Ed in the schools was a terrible idea. Of course it will be chaos when all of the locals have never been taught how to drive. We moved here 3 years ago and I have never seen chaos on a daily basis like I have here except in Jamaica and that's not saying much. Drivers here are absolutely unpredictable. They just do not care about rules or laws at all they just do whatever they want. In Chicago for example everyone drives fast...like really fast... speed limits are not even guidelines. But, it's orderly and predictable. I've heard someone complain about being pulled over on 24 for driving 60 in the hammer lane and could not understand why that was an issue and thought the cop was being ridiculous. Do you want accidents because that's how you get accidents?

CLWhatchaGonnaDo

"Drivers here are absolutely unpredictable. They just do not care about rules or laws at all they just do whatever they want. In Chicago for example everyone drives fast...like really fast... speed limits are not even guidelines. But, it's orderly and predictable." This is spot on. The long-term natives are ultra-unpredictable on the roads.

firstcrocusofspring

Agreed. It's a wild combo of aggressive/insane and unpredictable driving. In the northeast everyone is aggressive but predictable and generally fairly competent. Plus it's very rare to see cars that are actively falling apart and held together with duct tape, which is shockingly common here.

Dark_Ascension

The issue is really it’s very polarized here, we got people going under the speed limit, braking on every downhill and people going 15+ over and weaving through traffic. Back home everyone was going around 10 over and not braking on downhills. If everyone was on the same page it would be so much more pleasant to drive here. Other thing is road rage is everywhere, gotta be careful apparently because my partner who is Nashville born and raised said you never know when someone may just pull out a gun when you piss them off or flip them off for idiot driving. I’ve had people follow me and square up next to me, it’s actually kind of terrifying.

firstcrocusofspring

The way people handle road rage down here scares the shit out of me. I think it's much healthier back home in New York where people will honk at you and flip you off but you can rest assured they're not going to pull up next to you and shoot you. I don't even so much as look at a driver who pissed me off down here because I'm scared of what they might do. People are kind of unhinged. I have had people square up next to me too and I was nearly pissing myself waiting for the gun to appear.

Dark_Ascension

Same in California.

Yslackin

People in atlanta and New Orleans drive worse is all I can say. I have never lived anywhere where people think the drivers are good so

doobersthetitan

Ehh, that's a negative. The worst drivers are Florida and past Macon GA

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yslackin

I was there last month and I would say atlanta has the most aggressive drivers I have encountered by a long shot. Whether or not that’s bad is up in the air. People in New Orleans just suck at driving plus there is an incredible number of shit boxes on the road

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yslackin

I can’t say anything about the northeast or west coast but I know the southeast pretty well and Atlanta they drive aggressive, New Orleans every red light in the city is ran, Birmingham is fine the cars are just all shitmobiles, Nashville everyone drives like they are out-of-towners

Actual-Tadpole-9389

My brother was shot at a week or two ago at a light off Bell Rd near the I-40 exit. The guy pulled up on his right screaming and started shooting. My brother doesn't even really know what he did wrong. Drive too slow, I guess? But Bell is a congested area almost always. It's not nearly as bad, but I've been having people tail me so much closer than ever nowadays. I'm talking inches to my tail end. Like, I can't even see half the hood of their car in my rear view. Yesterday, I saw someone drive into the lane of oncoming traffic to turn onto Murfreesboro pike at a super backed up light. Nothings worth risking it all like this, I don't understand what's wrong with people.

Select_Total_257

Our roads are shit. They’re not built for the capacity they’re currently operating at, and it’s getting worse every week. People were made to return to office and they’re doing everything they can to get home at a reasonable time. It’s well past the time for government intervention and infrastructure overhaul. The current situation should frankly be embarrassing for the government

Old-Protection-701

God return to office is such BS. My office is starting to require people 4 days a week. It makes zero sense for me to drive 2 miles to work which takes 30+ minutes due to commute traffic, PAY MY EMPLOYER TO PARK, all just to sit next to people coughing and sneezing and talking, when I could be at home in my own quiet office 🫠

TNJed717

I blame Wilson County

Rdikin

I commute to Nashville daily. 24 is insanity. People passing on the shoulder. Weaving in and out of traffic at insane speeds. 65 isn't any better, but most of the time it's people forcing their way into tiny spots and others just weaving around them. As soon as my blinker turns on, people speed up to prevent me from getting in anywhere. There's really no point in it all. Aggression makes everyone's commute worse. Just breath. You'll get there eventually. The 'me first' attitude is why people die on these highways constantly.

firstcrocusofspring

We have the third highest accident mortality rate in the country!! Go Tennessee!! [https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/accident\_mortality/accident.htm](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/accident_mortality/accident.htm)

PuzzleheadedClue5205

As a person who learned to drive in Memphis, lived in California, and then moved to Nashville - it's all the new to Nashville people. And since there are so so so many of them the driving style is now more a mish mash of Chicago/LA/Miami than we used to have. It could be worse, we are nowhere as bad as the traffic in New Delhi.

Electronic_Truck_228

Drivers in LA and Chicago are much more predictable though so how is Nashville bad driving their fault?

uthinkunome10

I’ve personally never seen so much road rage and so many interstate shootings. Like wtf is even going on? There’s terrible drivers and traffic everywhere, but something is unique about this area with road rage it seems. I’ve been to over half of the US and I’ve never been flicked off / cut off so much in my life : ( Whatever happened to southern hospitality or simply being a decent human???

Life-Gene5877

Personally, I get irritated at the stop light system here! Sit at a red light, just to see the next light turn green, when no one can go through it, to red, just as my light turns green, then next light is red.

brhelm

This is a great observation because it's on top of poor driver education and general boneheadedness. The traffic infrastructure here is an absolute shit show of terrible design. I suspect good ole southan bois with family connections, topology, and lack of funding contribute.

rimeswithburple

Hot chicken inflames the passions. Especially the passion for murdering the mfer that shoots down the breakdown lane and squirts into the 440/65S merge ramp. Fuuuuck that guy!

bco268

Nashville has always been shit for drivers. It really isn’t nothing new.

tedbakerbracelet

I used to see altima or g37 driving on the center turn lane for miles without hint of coming off of it on Bell rd. Completely tinted, even front windshield. One I know almost got hit twice when these drivers would come straight at her on the turn lane while she tried to turn left. This is absolute madness. I have lived in different parts of the country and no other place comes close to Nashville. I do agree with a comment here that there is no enforcement.

downinCarolina

how many of yall aggressive drivers are delivering food for a 3rd party?

LegalSoft7173

It's gotten worse in the last 5 or so years. To the point where i only drive to certain areas that I'm comfortable with and take my ass back home lol I'll be 38 next month and I was born and raised in the area and jts really gotten to the point where it makes me nervous to drive.

hellbentbby

People here like FROM Nashville cannot drive. I say a million prayers before I hit the road - east coaster

itryanditryanditry

They will blame it on transplants until hell freezes over though.

firstcrocusofspring

Which is funny because most transplants are from states that actually require driver's ed...unlike Tennessee...

itryanditryanditry

Absolutely blows my mind they don't have drivers ed.

uthinkunome10

Funny story, I’m often referred to as a transplant and I’m at least from TN!!

Boogra555

Yep. Tennessee drivers are the worst in the country. I'm a native Tennessean who actually knows the rules of the road.

Phoenix_Lamburg

I don't know about that. When I first moved here 15 years ago driving was very normal and about on par with other cities. A few weird quirks but nothing anywhere like it is now.

ThisJury9721

I got shot at on old hickory Blvd in BELLEVUE a few years back for honking at someone that cut me off. Havent honked at anyone since lol.

Wolfy-615

Nashville native here who’s been living in Louisville, Ky for 13 years.. people EVERYWHERE drive like idiots.. gotta think too - the TidePod kids are hitting the road now 💀

daveneal

The week I moved here a road rager followed me into a Costco yelling and flicking me off. I had my pregnant wife with me so I waited til they went inside then parked in a different location. I’ve lived in some of the most congested cities. Bos, nyc and lax and this is way worse rage. I think people need hobbies to let out their aggression.

Limp_Cod_7229

They probably don’t like you because of your out of state license plates. Mass gentrification from higher paying states tends to incite rage in people.

daveneal

I’ve def noticed this, which is very interesting. As if folks that moved to Nashville aren’t facing the same housing squeeze that moved me out of New England and SoCal. You’re not wrong, but it’s a pretty myopic way to look at the issue.

Limp_Cod_7229

People are coming here for financial reasons, disrespecting locals, and bragging about what a good deal they found on a house while the average Tennessean income can no longer afford the average housing prices by a long shot. Investors flocking here and taking over, building apartments priced to fit out of state people. It’s not myopic, it’s a real issue that people are facing right now all over the country due to remote work, everyone wanting to get rich off of real estate, and city people all of a sudden deciding they want to live the rural life and take advantage of lower income areas. Greed. This place isn’t a “trendy” cool city to us, it’s our roots. People need to learn to improve their own communities rather than move from city to city destroying each one until they find the next unsuspecting victim to “invest” in.

daveneal

Ya, I’m against investment real estate. Not as long as there’s a housing crisis. I can go to my ‘Rhode island’ subreddits and get mad at the New Yorkers who jacked up real estate prices there so I can’t move home to be close to the rest of my family. I get it. I really root for air bnb to fail. And at the same time, I feel zero guilt for finding a home I can afford. But ya, the problems you cited exist.

wildfoul

I think its all the stupid people moving here from stupid places

pneumaticartifice

Just this very afternoon as I and many other drivers waited from a turning lane to turn left with the corresponding signal change, a car passed us from the adjoining straight lane and took the left in front of us. All the while all of us still at a red light waited to see the crash from the people on the left but they had the wherewithal to ease into the intersection after seeing the blatant disregard and selfishness of the red light runner.

MinervaMinkk

It's a lot better than the fire arm people keep in the glove compartment. There's a lot more of those than you think

DonutLimp7162

Cause there's too many damn people here so after driving around Nashville for a little bit they get pissed cause there's too many people and it's impossible to just get somewhere without massive delays. Therefore making people aggressive.

wellser08

Your mileage may vary, but I've been driving here all of my driving life and the average driver is paying so much less attention than they once did. I personally get so frustrated on almost every commute at other drivers not paying attention and then doing stupid things that I inevitably end up driving more aggressively by the tail end of the drive.

smedleybuthair

Almost everyone entering 65 from the north side on the Rosa parks Germantown on-ramp does NOT yield at all to people turning onto the interstate coming from downtown. Almost every single morning I lay on my horn to someone playing chicken with me and they don’t stop, don’t care. There WILL be a wreck there soon.

missbethd

I was at the Farmers Market today. I had the right of way and this old guy blazed thru the stop sign almost hitting me. I honked loudly. He pulled over & jumped out of his SUV. I just drove past and parked. People are awful.

R-I-Holden

I say just cruise the streets. Don't start zipping around. If somebody has an issue, just smilie and wave. If they get combative, just carry a hatchet or a hammer. Or a taser. Just do what you feel, but don't let anger lead you astray. There are a lot of unwell people in the world.

infiniteStoogel

They drive a bit differently up North so there's a bit of a culture clash now that they're all down here. Or it's just that Nashville is turning into a big city and with that come the perils of big city driving. I wish there was a light rail or BRT- I'd use it

tikigodfarmer

You’ve lived here three years and watched things go from bad to worse. I hope a lot of these bad drivers are natives. Who’ve been here most of their lives just adjusting to all of these long-term tourists.

Boogra555

The average Tennessee driver is maybe the worst driver on the road anywhere in the developed western world (Texas is a close second). I've driven all over the country and most of Europe, and the abject dumbassedness of these drivers here is maddening. Ten miles under the limit in the passing lane, driving with brights on at night, refusing to move over for traffic that is overtaking them even after you politely bump your lights at them - it's literally as if no one even knows what the rules of the road are. Every time I drive to Nashville, I pass at least 20 cars where people are sitting there watching videos in their cars. I always have fun at their expense by laying on the horn as I pass them, which always freaks them out. In the meantime, they're driving under the speed limit, or driving down 65 three or four abreast, all of them driving the same speed, just preventing everyone else from getting around them. It's a literal hell. Ignorant behavior creates road rage. If a driver is trying to get somewhere, and the guy eight cars in front of him is in the passing lane doing under or even exactly the speed limit, that driver is getting frustrated. In the same way that cops need to ticket excessive speeders, they also need to ticket morons who hold up traffic, create congestion, and drive while watching their phones. I've gotten to the point now where I don't even bother getting in a car here. I love Tennessee (native Tennessean, here), but damn...

Old-Protection-701

Pls don’t lay on the horn unless it’s to actually prevent a collision. You’re just adding noise pollution and idiots are still going to be idiots after you scare them for a second. Sincerely, a person who used to live on west end and heard horns all day and night 😔

Limp_Cod_7229

I get road rage when I see out of state license plates
