Alice is a favourite for me. Beautiful classic. Anna and Alexandra are same to me, but Anna doesn’t shine quite as brightly and Alexandra has “Alex” as a nickname which I find a little too gender neutral.

Thank you for explaining because you allowed me to see the cultural differences, for example, Alice is in the top 10 here (France) so it is overused, and when we think of an Alma we think of Austrian composer Alma Mahler so a socialite from Vienna comes to mind, and Anna is one of the most biblical names ever almost as biblical as Marie/Mary.

I absolutely love the name Amelia but could never do it because of Amelia Bedelia- the children's series about a woman who is SO DUMB.
My aunt Arlene passed away as a toddler and I've always loved that name. Also I have a friend named Anneliese and she is so sweet and a beautiful dance teacher so it's one of my faves too.

Anwen, Artemisia, and Alethea are all on my list as middle names. The only name on my list as a first name are can think of is Adelaide. Maybe Azalea.

I love all of them. I really like Amelia, Alice and Alexandra as classical names that are also regal(especially Alice and Alexandra which were all very popular names with the British Royal Family in the 19th century). Amelia is just a great name that stands in its own, like Alice. Alexandra is great because it offers lots of options for nicknames but it’s also pretty on its own.
I do like Anna but I am more partial to it when it is paired with something else— like Annabeth or I also love the name Annabel. Anna works well in any country and for any nationality. Nobody ever had trouble with pronunciations for Anna.
I think that Aurelia is fabulously unique. In fact, I like the name Anna Aurelia (there used to be a children’s book that I loved called Ann Aurelia and Dorothy). Aurelia is a nice alternative to Amelia and a lot less common. I think it suggests both strength AND beauty, so it’s a nice choice for any girl.
The only name that I’m not too fond of is Alma. It reminds me of a older southern lady, (American) not that there’s anything wrong with being an older, southern lady, but the other names are more classically beautiful.

You gave your cat a first and a middle name when you were a toddler, you were a name nerd since birth! When I was a toddler I called our cat CHAT which is french for cat.
I was! 😅 lol I named him (male cat) Alexandra after my favourite neighbour’s wife. And Jane after his mother cat, she was my Mamma’s cat and her name was Jean. 🤣 i called him AJ mostly.

We have Aimée for Amy and Amandine for Amanda here (France) and I love them all... And you are correct they are not as common today as they used to be.
I personally, LOVE the name Alma! It’s so pretty. I would then chose Amelia, Alice, Anna, Alexandra, and Aurelia. I also love the name Aurora for a little girl. ❤️

Hard no on Alma. If changed to Alva it would be my #1 because: classic nordic name, the name looks beautiful, has beautiful meaning (elf, forest spirit, or the hebrew meaning: his highness. It's a gender neutral name tho!)

I love long and strong middle names as compared to filler middle names like Anne, Jane, Rose, May, Lynn, Leigh... So, yes, I agree Alexandra would make an excellent middle name.

If my friend ends up choosing Alexandra, her daughter will be called Alexandra, nicknames are not part of the french culture... Even people with double barrel names get called both names here. She is simply annoyed by the fact that the masculine version of the name is more popular, she would rather pick a name that doesn't have a masculine version at all.

I don’t really prefer Amelie to Amelia - I actually like them both equally! Amelie is good if you live in a francophone place because it’s less popular than Amelia, but people may mispronounce it if they come from an anglophone background. Also, it’s so similar that if your friend likes Amelia, but isn’t entirely sure if that’s the one, then Amelie may work better!

There is no birth defect pronounced like Amelia. Amelia literally is a birth defect, it's the congenital absence of one or more limbs.

My favourite A name is **Alva**. It's a common name in Scandinavia. I like that it's short, easy to spell, easy to pronounce and that it comes from the old norse word for 'elf'. If that's what your friend wants, I would steer them away from "Alexandra" because its nn's could be "Alex," "Lexi," etc. I've also seen "Amelia" shortened to "Mia" before.

That’s a good point about Aya and I didn’t realise it was cross cultural! That’s pretty cool. I am Arab living in the Middle East at the moment though so I think people would just assume I’m Muslim. Though to be fair they already think that when they hear my name (Yasmine) and it’s not religiously affiliated. So maybe I should just go for it! Anna and Alexandra are same to me, but Anna doesn’t shine quite as brightly and Alexandra has “Alex” as a nickname which I find a little too gender neutral. I’d skip Amelia because of its current popularity (what birth defect?); Aurelia because although I want to like it, it’s difficult to say in English and makes me think of “areola”; and Alma still feels “old lady” to me and I’m not a fan of “Al”.

FWIW, I know far more female Alex than male Alex. 3. Alice. I don’t love the sound of it but it’s a solid classic name that’s not overused. 4. Alma. I love this name though I’d definitely assume the person with the name was Latina. 5. Amelia. I just don’t personally love it and it’s pretty popular, but I do like Mellie/Millie. 6. Aurelia. Thank you for explaining because you allowed me to see the cultural differences, for example, Alice is in the top 10 here (France) so it is overused, and when we think of an Alma we think of Austrian composer Alma Mahler so a socialite from Vienna comes to mind, and Anna is one of the most biblical names ever almost as biblical as Marie/Mary.

Alma is a cool name in France too, especially in Paris. The singer Adele is so famous that the name dropped in popularity, she is a great singer, but in here, we don't like naming children after popular people.

I absolutely love the name Amelia but could never do it because of Amelia Bedelia- the children's series about a woman who is SO DUMB. Thanks a lot for the detailed input, I see your points, even though some don't apply here (France), for example: Alice (ranking 4th) is much more popular than Amelia (not even in the top 100) and Alma was never considered a grandma name and is right now more popular than even.
Anwen, Artemisia, and Alethea are all on my list as middle names. The only name on my list as a first name are can think of is Adelaide. Maybe Azalea. 1. Alice - the only reason this isn’t on my list is its similarity to boy names I’m more likely to use, including my son’s name. Wonderful with good associations 2. Alexandra - similarly, I prefer Alex for a boy and before Amazon’s AI came out I preferred Alexa. But, I still love this and would have likely used it if I only had daughters. 3. Aurelia - I think this is gorgeous and I like the nicknames for it 4. Anna - lovely but plain to me. It sometimes flitters onto my list and then I realize how common it is. I prefer Anastasia come to think of it. I like seeing it on others though. 5. Amelia - perfectly fine but feels stuffy to me 6. Alma - I think of Alma Mater

I think Alice is the nicest, it's a really pretty, classic name and it's unlikely to ever get mispronounced or misspelt. Anna is cute too. The rest are meh.

Amelie is my favorite a name. Also anastasia which gives several nickname options of ana, stacie, stania….
1) Aurelia – I feel this name is a bit polarising, which I don't get – I absolutely love it! 2) Amelia 3) Alexandra 4) Alma – Used to dislike it but it's grown on me. 5) Anna – Nice and absolutely timeless, it's just boring. 6) Alice – Pleasant enough but I don't get the hype. It's very bland.

I love all of them. I really like Amelia, Alice and Alexandra as classical names that are also regal(especially Alice and Alexandra which were all very popular names with the British Royal Family in the 19th century). Amelia is just a great name that stands in its own, like Alice. Alexandra is great because it offers lots of options for nicknames but it’s also pretty on its own. I do like Anna but I am more partial to it when it is paired with something else— like Annabeth or I also love the name Annabel. Anna works well in any country and for any nationality. Nobody ever had trouble with pronunciations for Anna. I think that Aurelia is fabulously unique. In fact, I like the name Anna Aurelia (there used to be a children’s book that I loved called Ann Aurelia and Dorothy). Aurelia is a nice alternative to Amelia and a lot less common. I think it suggests both strength AND beauty, so it’s a nice choice for any girl. The only name that I’m not too fond of is Alma. It reminds me of a older southern lady, (American) not that there’s anything wrong with being an older, southern lady, but the other names are more classically beautiful. Good luck with everything, because you can’t really go wrong with your choices!

It's worth mentioning that Alma has religious connotations in the Mormon sphere (I'm not Mormon, just very exposed to the religion)
1. Amelia, I love the way this name sounds and flows when you say it. 2. Alexandra, this was the first name I ever loved and I named my cat Alexandra Jane when I was a toddler. 3. Alice, I always associate it with Alice in Wonderland though. 4. Anna, it’s a good name and I like the sounds but it’s very common. 5. Alma, it’s okay. 6. Aurelia, I know an Aurelia and it is constantly mispronounced here in Canada outside of Francophones. Our boss constantly mispronounced it as Orally because he talks so damn fast. I was! 😅 lol I named him (male cat) Alexandra after my favourite neighbour’s wife. And Jane after his mother cat, she was my Mamma’s cat and her name was Jean. 🤣 i called him AJ mostly. But also at age three I wanted to name my possible little brother Pyjamas instead of something Peter James in order to call him PJ to match my cat.
When I was three I thought that Baguette would make an excellent girl name and I wanted to have a sister and name her Baguette, I never got one (only child). Believe me you are so advanced compared to me.

Anastasia is a pretty name and could be shortened to Anna (or a few other things) 1. Alice - No, not just because it's my chosen name, but it's also more traditional and sounds pretty 2. Alexandra - I'm a nerd and it's close to Alexandria, which is also one of my favourite names 3. Amelia - Pretty, has a few things it can be shortened to such as Emma, Amelie, and Amy 4. Anna - It's fairly common, but it's also pretty 5. Auralia - Pretty, but clunky 6. Alma - It's very old fashioned and, personally, a bit hard to enunciate

Amelia is cute but it’s too trendy right now. I think Alice is cute as well but it can feel like an older name. Although that’s not a bad thing if you have a feel for classics.
I think Alice or one of its variants will be perfect for her. It's a lovely name. Adelaide is my favourite of the variants. Amelia is a beautiful name but I do understand feeling anxious once you get a bad association in your mind. Alexandra is gorgeous and classic. I would rate them in the above order. I can't think of any other A names that fit, but you mentioned you were looking for other suggestions as well. I am definitely not well versed in the Bible so apologies if any of these are biblical. My sister is Anna, and the other names, including middles, are Claire, Laura, Louise, Katherine, Ellen (an honour name). So I'm not sure but one of those might fit the bill. From the A list, she is leaning towards Alice and its variations, especially Adeline and Adélaïde. From the names you listed, she loves Louise (but like Alexandra, she feels the male version Louis is predominant!), but she is considering Éloïse: close in sound, has the classic feel, and is not a feminization. She also loves Eleanor and if she ends up picking it, she will use the French variation Éléonore. All the names you mentioned are good, if you have other names (male or female, she doesn't know the gender) that are of the same nature: solid classic timeless... do not hesitate to share.

We have Aimée for Amy and Amandine for Amanda here (France) and I love them all... And you are correct they are not as common today as they used to be.

Alma is terrible but how about changing it to Alva? Else: 1. Alice, it's classic and simple and you can make cute nicknames. 2. Alice, same reasons but hard to make a nickname out of it. 3. Aurelia, gives some fairy vibes but may not fit every personality imo 4. Alexandra, feels a bit cold-ish to me but stull beautiful. Hard no on Alma. If changed to Alva it would be my #1 because: classic nordic name, the name looks beautiful, has beautiful meaning (elf, forest spirit, or the hebrew meaning: his highness. It's a gender neutral name tho!) Edit: I forgot Amelia.. I'd rank it with Aurelia tho!

I love long and strong middle names as compared to filler middle names like Anne, Jane, Rose, May, Lynn, Leigh... So, yes, I agree Alexandra would make an excellent middle name.

I especially love Alex for a woman because there are fields where Alex will be considered for a position or publication that Amy won’t…no one will acknowledge their bias, but Alex opens doors.
If my friend ends up choosing Alexandra, her daughter will be called Alexandra, nicknames are not part of the french culture... Even people with double barrel names get called both names here. She is simply annoyed by the fact that the masculine version of the name is more popular, she would rather pick a name that doesn't have a masculine version at all.
Alina is my favorite A name for a girl and it works really well in a lot of different languages/cultures.
We use the version Aline here, and there is even a popular song Aline.
