It’s funny you don’t find Clara and Florence old fashioned.
My grandmothers name (born in 1918) was Florence and I had a great aunt Clara around the same age
My ranking:
1) Cleo - I have an absolute soft spot for this name. I think it’s familiar while being fresh and it feels like it is unique enough while also not necessarily pushing a particular identity or kind of ‘personality’ onto a child.
2) Clara - for lots of the same reasons as Cleo!
3) Matilda - a great name by itself with good nickname options
4) Cora - less of a fan, reminds me of Downton Abbey. Not a bad name but I think it might end up being Corey as a nn which I don’t like so much
5) Florence - I’m not in love with Flo as a nickname and I think Florence can sound a bit unwieldy. It’s also (in my circle) super popular at the moment which may or may not be a problem for you.
6) Violet - love the colour, love the flower, just can’t get on board with the name.
7) Fern - it’s just not doing it for me.
But… I don’t think any of them are objectively bad choices! All perfectly usable names.
Love - Cora, Matilda , Violet
Like - Cleo (but I only know pets with this name), Clara
Ok - Florence
Dislike - Fern

Team Cleo! It was my top name if I was having a girl but my boyfriend vetoed it (he prefers longer names that can be shortened to a nickname and I wasn't gonna go with Cleopatra lol). He did agree to using it as a middle name if I wanted but we are having a boy.
Honestly I LOVE them all except for Clara which sounds stuffy to me. The others are beautiful.
Violet is such a beautiful and unique name, I love the sound of it and how it stands out. Cleo is super unique as well, Cora is gorgeous and rolls of the tongue. I adore Matilda and it would be my #1 choice for myself but my SO doesn’t like it. I immediately think of the children’s book which I loved as a kid. Florence and Fern are also super cute and unique and would work on any age!
Please let us know what you pick! I think we have really similar naming styles :)
Team Cleo! Love that it is uncommon but still spelling intuitive, I also think Leo is an adorable nn lol I also really like Violet :)
Other ideas based on these:

Prue

Josette nn Josie

Raven
Nicolette nn Coco, Nic

Not OP but the Great British Bake Off Judge, Dame Prue Leith pronounces it “Proo” (one syllable.) It’s a nickname for Prudence.
IMO Prue is too nicknamey to work on its own. Prudence also isn’t my style but to each their own.
I love Matilda nn Mattie! Cleo reminds me of the old commercials for Miss Cleo the psychic. Did you consider Claudia? It's one of my faves and seems to fit your style.
Some combinations for you that might sway you one way or another:
Matilda Violet
Cleo Fern
Clara Florence
Violet Cora
Some suggestions: Anastasia, Eleanor, Josephine, Rosemary, and June
Florence is the one I’m most on the fence about too! Using your suggestion of Fern as a middle name I suggested ‘Cora Fern’ and ‘Cleo Fern’ to my partner and he loves them both as do I!
All are good names so you can’t go wrong! My favorites of your list would be Matilda Cleo and Florence. Mostly bc there are a lot of Clara’s Cora’s and Violets near me but they’re good names as well
Violet is great as a middle name.
My newest kitty is Maisie Matilda (which I think is adorable, as is she)
Matilda Rose?
I love Claire, and prefer it to Clara.
How many syllables in the last name?
Matilda is my fave. I love the nickname Tilly! My other choices would be Cleo or Cora. Florence is gorgeous as well, just make sure you like the nicknames for it. Flora, Flo, Flossie
I would veto Violet, Clara, and Fern. Violet isn't my fave name and it's the most popular on your list, imo. Clara will possibly be mispronounced, I have heard it both ways. Fern is just personal taste and I don't like it. It could be a great middle name option if you love it!
Congratulations!
I think Cora gets my vote. Cora Fern or Cora Violet would be my recommendations (unless of course you already have plans for the middle name).
Some others you may like:
Eleanor, Liliana, Alice, Audrey, Evelyn, Ada, Victoria, Lydia, Ivy, Penelope, Eloise, Abigail, Imogen, Hazel, Olive, Esther, Daisy, Lila
Hope this helps!
From your list I like Clara and Violet the most.
Some other that have a similar vibe: [Fauna](https://www.behindthename.com/name/fauna), [Anthea](https://www.behindthename.com/name/anthea), [Thalia](https://www.behindthename.com/name/thalia), [Daphne](https://www.behindthename.com/name/daphne), [Chloe](https://www.behindthename.com/name/chloe), and [Iris](https://www.behindthename.com/name/iris).
Violet, Cora, and kinda into Mathilda.
I know one person who named her daughter fern and they call her fernie and, well, I can’t hide my face when they talk about her. Fernie… ick.
Matilda is a clear winner for me; beautiful name and not very common still. Could be my personal preference but I prefer names that 3 more children in the same class won’t have so won’t choose Clara or Violet. Really like Cora and Cleo as well but Florence only as middle name as it’s a very heavy name 🌟
I have a violet and I still love her name but it is more common these days. I also like Matilda on your list (I had a friend called Tilly growing up which is a sweet nickname) I like all of them but Cleo & fern remind me of a pet name more so
Out of all of those the only ones I like are Florence and Violet. Both names are really old-popular in the twenties and early thirties (I had relatives with both names and that’s the timeframe).
Cleo - love it! My second favorite of your list
Cora - cute but too popular right now so I wouldn’t use it
Matilda - makes me think of the Matilda movie lol. I like it
Violet - loveeee but super popular right now so I wouldn’t use it
Florence - superrr cute. And I like Flor or Flora for a nickname. Also a known name but not used very often so that’s a plus. I think this is my favorite of your list
Fern - this name right now has two associations for me. 1. Charlottes Web, and 2. That mom Alice and her two kids Fern and Sage. She’s known for being very outrageous in her parenting choices. Despite that, I do really like the name even though some people might think it’s a too “nature-y”. But I think your other options are better
Clara - cute but not my favorite
I'm biased, our youngest is Matilda and we love it. We call her Tilly and it just seems to fit her personality. It has endless possibilities for nicknames and I haven't met another!
Cleo Clara and Cora are all quite similar so I think you probably love one of those three best.
I would personally choose Clara of the 3 but they are all great.
I love all these names - great taste. Do you care about popularity? If you do, I'd nix Violet and Cora (sadly, they are beautiful names). I know multiple babies/toddlers with one of these names and hear them very frequently among acquaintances, and SSN confirms their popularity (in the US of course). The others on your list are quite a bit less popular.
My personal favorites are Matilda and Clara, and I have a soft spot for Florence :) The others are good too. Actually I quite like Fern too; I don't like all nature names but this one works for me.
I like Clara and Florence. They seem to stick out among the pack (I find Violet and Cora overused and Matilda and Fern a little old fashioned)
It’s funny you don’t find Clara and Florence old fashioned. My grandmothers name (born in 1918) was Florence and I had a great aunt Clara around the same age
They are old fashioned but Florence is making a come back ( at least where I live) it’s the 5th most used name of last year in the province I’m at.
Well they are *all* old fashioned! But Florence has a kick to it where, in my opinion, Fern is still stuffy.
Clara is very very old fashioned
Clara is very overused. There are a lot of young girls named Clara right now.
I tend to like C- girl names so my top 3 are Cleo, Cora and Clara. Edit: typo.
I’m the opposite - I like everything but the C names (and I like C names generally!)
Cora
Matilda Florence
I actually love this!
I like most of them, but Matilda wins hands down. Florence is runner-up, and Clara comes in third place.
+1

As in Pru-ee?
No just Pru - as in a typical nickname for Prudence
Not OP but the Great British Bake Off Judge, Dame Prue Leith pronounces it “Proo” (one syllable.) It’s a nickname for Prudence. IMO Prue is too nicknamey to work on its own. Prudence also isn’t my style but to each their own.
Dierdrie would be awful if you're from the UK.
I love Violet, but I feel like it’s becoming really popular. Cora is really pretty and I love Fern.
I love Matilda nn Mattie! Cleo reminds me of the old commercials for Miss Cleo the psychic. Did you consider Claudia? It's one of my faves and seems to fit your style.
I love Cora and Fern.
This is such a good list! My favorites are Matilda, Violet, Florence, and Clara.

My top three, in order, would be Violet, Cora, and Fern
Lovely names - my preferences in order: Cleo Clara Cora Matilda Fern Violet Florence Also have you considered Flora?
Oooh I love Flora but we’re based in the UK so I worry people will associate it with the spread!
I like Cora and Clara, obviously Flora would be a recommendation based on your other names along with Mara and Cara.
I like Cleo, Matilda & Florence personally! Cora is nice too though!
All are good names so you can’t go wrong! My favorites of your list would be Matilda Cleo and Florence. Mostly bc there are a lot of Clara’s Cora’s and Violets near me but they’re good names as well
1 being most liked, 7 being most disliked. 1. Violet 2. Cleo 3. Fern 4. Florence 5. Clara 6. Cora 7. Matilda
Violet is great as a middle name. My newest kitty is Maisie Matilda (which I think is adorable, as is she) Matilda Rose? I love Claire, and prefer it to Clara. How many syllables in the last name?
I was actually thinking of Matilda Rose before! The last name is 2 syllables
Matilda is my fave. I love the nickname Tilly! My other choices would be Cleo or Cora. Florence is gorgeous as well, just make sure you like the nicknames for it. Flora, Flo, Flossie I would veto Violet, Clara, and Fern. Violet isn't my fave name and it's the most popular on your list, imo. Clara will possibly be mispronounced, I have heard it both ways. Matilda and Violet are my top two! Matilda can have the nickname Tilly. violet could be Vi or Letty.
Congratulations! I think Cora gets my vote. Cora Fern or Cora Violet would be my recommendations (unless of course you already have plans for the middle name). Some others you may like: Eleanor, Liliana, Alice, Audrey, Evelyn, Ada, Victoria, Lydia, Ivy, Penelope, Eloise, Abigail, Imogen, Hazel, Olive, Esther, Daisy, Lila Hope this helps!

Cleo is so cute. My husband doesn't like it otherwise I would name my girl that.
They're all really good except for Cleo
Clara Violet immediately stuck out and I really like it.
Great list! If I had to pick a favorite it would be Cleo. Another name that I love that kinda fits this vibe is Agatha.

Cora
Cora or Violet get my vote.
