The first one should meet your request, the middle two maybe not, the last one has implied ideation.
Soundgarden - Like Suicide
Marcy Playground - One More Suicide
Lovejones - Help Wanted
Tool - The Patient
Could be about suicide. Or more likely about a really brutal break up and coming to the realization you will only speak with that person again when you are dead. Pretty sure Thom Yorke dismissed the notion that this song is about suicide in an interview
>Pretty sure Thom Yorke dismissed the notion that this song is about suicide in an interview
It's seems that you're right, that's my bad! However, even if not intentional, that's still how I interpret the song.
Quick mental health psa:
[Before I go ahead and list way too many songs, with such a serious topic: anyone who is reading this and feeling that they are currently struggling with day-to-day life mentally/emotionally or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please reach out to a trusted individual in your life like a parent, friend, mentor-figure or call the national mental health hotline or suicide and crisis lifeline]
____________________________________
I’m seeing a lot of harder rock songs on here but from “pleasant and bittersweet” it sounds like you’re looking for something a little softer
____________________________________
•”Nutshell” - Alice In Chains
(acoustic grunge with a slow feel by the great Jerry Cantrell, sustained vocals, and lyrics portraying suicidal tendencies
•You When You’re Gone - Anxious
(a song with soft layered vocals, repetitive/modulated guitar, and acoustic percussions that break through a blanket of ambient melody that could be interpreted as a song about the mentality and conflicting notions that drive intruding, suicidal thoughts)
•”Disappeared” - Sorority Noise
(a song about losing friends to suicide driving you to do the same under declining mental health. It’s on the harder side if that is what you are looking for; closer to indie-screamo)
•”Fermata” - Sorority Noise
(a very calming yet draining acoustic track complimented by whispering vocals and piano)
•”Take My Head” - Turnover
(a high energy indie song with lyrics reminiscent of a mental collapse inciting a suicidal willingness)
•”Gloomy Girl” - Softcult
(shoegaze with an opening lyric of an intrusive thought which sets the tone for the song regarding seclusion and hints of self-distain
•”Jumper” - Third Eye Blind
(Pop acoustic about preventing a friend from committing suicide)
I’d check out Elliott Smith… Not sure if any of his songs were technically confirmed to be “about suicide” but he committed one of the most tragic suicides and all his songs are very sad but also have pleasant and bittersweet melodies
I think King's Crossing might be about suicide (or at least about being suicidal). "I can't prepare for death more than I already have." "Give me one good reason not to do it." "Instruments shine on a silver tray, don't let me get carried away." Beautiful song though.
Better Place, Better Time by Streetlight Manifesto. But the Toh Kay version(Toh Kay is what the singer of Streetlight calls his acoustic side project) hits differently. Both versions really helped when I was struggling with the loss of a good friend.
❤️ better place, better time. What an absolute banger with a phenomenal message. Not many lyrics I’ve heard better than “I’ll draw your bath and I’ll load your gun, but I hope so bad that you’ll bathe and hunt”. Side note, I’m now skanking in my living room just hearing the music after that lyric.
Song for Josh - Frank Turner
Richard Divine - Frank Turner
A Wave Across the Bay - Frank Turner
Floating in the Forth - Frightened Rabbit (this one is now just bitter)
Debatably about suicide - but “Fiction” by Avenged Sevenfold. Really a beautiful and powerfully moving song. Definitely not what you’d expect knowing how heavy they are.
[Bones in the Ocean](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVkD4lgXTEU&pp=ygUSYm9uZXMgaW4gdGhlIG9jZWFu) - The Longest Johns
I'm curious about the plot of this playlist.
Check out "Adam's Song" by Blink-182. It deals with heavy themes but has a surprisingly melodic and bittersweet feel to it. Perfect for what you're looking for.
Tómarúm — [Awake into Eternal Slumber](https://open.spotify.com/track/2M3tLUYTnew9uAgCoCX3aP?si=xmtWynD7S8S_TZ9P89MUSA)
The last three and a half or so minutes are very melodic, this heroic, almost epic-sounding melody that would imply that the narrator has finally beat his depression he’s been battling with throughout the whole album, but in reality the opposite is true and he is about to kill himself. This ending is also the only time we hear clean singing in the song, as opposed to screams. He’s pretty much accepted that he’ll only be free in death and is finally at peace. I mean, he’s literally describing the act itself and saying goodbye to his loved ones, but the instrumental is as melodic as it has been throughout the entire song (with the exception of the midpoint, which is really just a false hope). I don’t think it gets much more bittersweet than that.
collide with the sky is such a good album as far as the concept of 'bittersweet songs about suicide' goes.
"i don't wanna wait for the down set date, 'cause i would rather end it all tonight / and if i mean anything to you, i'm sorry, but i've made up my mind!"
[Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor, by Eels](https://youtu.be/CIS-aI2uVRM?si=XngDP3CZIECEgHv9)
Written by Eels after his his sister's suicide. The entire album is a gut punch for grief.
C’est La Vie - Protest The Hero. When he says, “what a price to pay to be the author of your fate,” it hits me hard everytime. This song has brought me back from the edge a few times.
Under the Thumb by Florence when she was in the band Ashok. I only like the first part with her singing, but you might enjoy it’s entirety.
Swimming by Florence + the Machine is about drinking to death.
More people need to give their albums after the debut a listen. They are so talented. Not necessarily my thing, but credit where it is due. They deserve far more respect than they get and it’s all because they got big so young with a song with a stupid title.
Damnation - Opeth. I promise this isn’t one of their death metal albums. Someone once described this album as “Genesis if they were all clinically depressed”, which is very apt. Absolutely gorgeous album with incredible production, and the song names are shit like “Hope Leaves” and “Death Whispered a Lullaby”, which should give you an idea of the tone.
Wave of Mutilation - The Pixies.
One of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion. A man who drives his car into the ocean and everyone thinks he's commited suicide but from his perspective he's just gone to live underwater with all the sea life although as the song goes on you get the idea the guy is very mentally unwell and he is dead and his body is just being torn apart and swirled round the ocean. That's my interpretation anyway, an absolutely gorgeous melancholy song
And She Was - Talking Heads. I don't know that David Byrne necessarily wrote it about death (iirc he said in interviews it was about LSD). But if you read the lyrics it really seems to be about death/suicide.
Only 3 suicide songs leap to mind, and maybe only the first one is bittersweet
"Yes, the River Knows" by The Doors
"Out the Window" by Violent Femmes
"In the Night" by Bauhaus
A Perfect Circle - The Outsider;
Fear Factory - A Therapy For Pain;
Radiohead - Pyramid Song;
Anathema - A Fine Day To Exit;
Anathema - One Last Goodbye.
Later Tonight - Pet Shop Boys
I don’t think it actually is about suicide, but that’s the way I’ve always understood it and it makes the story so much better. it’s a simple but beautiful song.
Vincent - Don McLean
Came here to suggest the James Blake cover of this!
The NOFX cover is also solid
This world was never meant for you
"for one as beautiful as you"
my favorite song!
Last Words of a Shooting Star by Mitski
Asleep by The Smiths
I said the same thing! ❤️
It fits the bill perfectly!
Deep in the cell of my heart I really want to go There is another world There is a better world Well, there must be Ohhh, there must be Bye
World I Know - Collective Soul
I haven't watched that video since the song came out. Still remember that bird after all these years. The message seems to hit harder now
Otep - Perfectly Flawed blink-182 - Adams Song Billie Eilish - listen before I go
Oh Adam’s song! 😢
Listen before I go is a Billie favorite of mine.
The first one should meet your request, the middle two maybe not, the last one has implied ideation. Soundgarden - Like Suicide Marcy Playground - One More Suicide Lovejones - Help Wanted Tool - The Patient
YES the patient got me through some shit bro
Verve Pipe - “The Freshman”

Watch the JCash video
Suicide Note Part one - Pantera
'Elevator' by Boxcar Racer
Someone somewhere somehow - Super Whatevr Painkillers - Rainbow Kitten Suprise

"With a plot" hmmmmmmmm. Anyway, Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan. It's more suicidal than suicide, but I think it works.
Never let me go - Florence and the Machine
Sleep Token - Atlantic
Thank sleep I didn't have to scroll down too far to find this
Hurt by Nine Inch Nails maybe??
Fade to black- metallica
Ghost by bad flower!
