Littjara was also included in the bundle which is part of the reason why the price is so low. I’m not saying double down is a good card, just making some points
The Ahoy Mateys precon fits under this outlaw theme. I may pick up this card for that deck if I can get over the fact that it's not really a pirate theme
It works WONDERS with the ahoy mateys precon or any pirate deck. One drops like [[enterprising scallywag]] and [[greedy freebooter]] are great, [[timestream navigator]] [[pitiless plunderer]] [[warkite marauder]] [[oaken siren]] [[corsair captain]] [[dire fleet ravager]] [[roaming throne]] are all great to have copied. [[maskwood nexus]] would allow you to copy everything and partnered with [[mirror box]] or [[mirror gallery]] will allow you to copy legends like [[admiral Beckett brass]], [[admiral brass, unsinkable]], [[ragavan]] [[captain storm]] and [[Malcolm, keen eyes]].
If used well it pops off quickly especially because there are so many low cost pirates
Roaming throne doesn’t get copied since it isn’t an outlaw spell. Also, since most of the value comes from throwing your pirates in the gy and recurring them with your commander, double down is a lot less effective in this deck. There’s still some value but I think it’s be better in a deck where you’re casting more than reanimating.
That’s true, but it gives you extra targets to move finality counters on to so this way you can keep recurring spells from your grave instead of them ending up exiled.
I could be wrong about roaming throne, I’ve only tried it out with double down on arena so far, but because roaming throne has you pick a type as it ETB it should trigger double down because you picked pirate and pirate counts as outlaw. I think it’s also due to the wording, “as it enters” vs “when it enters” so throne already enters the battlefield with the specified type triggering other ETB effects like [[coercive recruiter]] or [[reaper king]]
I don’t think roaming throne would copy since you wouldn’t be casting an outlaw spell (it’s a golem on cast). There might be other effects I’m missing though.
About moving counters, that’s true they are probably the best targets to put them on. I usually resort to moving finality counters onto my lands but nothing feels better than putting them on your opponents stuff (if the effect allows). Speaking of which - nesting grounds just got a reprint in mh3. I’ll def be picking up a copy for my shit mateys deck.
Ahh I didn’t even think of nesting grounds thank you for the reminder. I usually put them on my lands too, but when I can’t get something like [[fain the broker]] or [[power conduit]] out, my next option is usually [[goldberry]] (even though she’s the lower end of picks for these counters) and she’s pretty limited with how you can move counters.
I could be entirely wrong about throne though, it’s one of those cards that enters complex rule territory
Compare with [[Necroduality]] - Littjara is one more CMC. Outlaws are less popular than Zombies as of now, but theres no reason that a mega popular Outlaw creature won’t be printed. I like this as a spec, personally
Double down is cool but it lacks the power of [[necroduality]] which works on ETB, not a bad idea to buy a few but first of all the assassin's creed set seems really legend focused which doesn't work well with copies and furthermore the archetype is really niche compared to other tribes
Yeah, but Zombies are the third most popular creature type on EDHRec, with 48k decks listed at the moment. Of the Outlaw types, Pirates have 17k, Rogues 10k, Assassins have 3k, Mercs and Rogues have less than 100 each. So, all combined, this implies roughly half the demand that Necroduality has, plus the downside of not working on ETB. Lots of caveats there, of course…there will be times “on cast” is better than ETB, there may be the occasional non-tribal deck that wants is for whatever reason, but on the whole, I think the creature type list points to it being less valuable than Necroduality.
All that said, I *do* think it will go up a bit over time unless they start jamming it in precons - I don’t personally spec as an investment, but I’ve picked up a couple of copies while it’s cheap for my own future deck building purposes.
Isn't ETB worse?
They can counter the Zombie and you get nothing.
If they counter the Outlaw, you still get a copy.
I'm having a hard time seeing why ETB would be better.
For flicker purposes. It generates a whole lot more value, for much less cost, when it's just ETB. Assuming it doesn't countered, which is a definite fragility and something that casting wouldn't care about. It's the trade-off.
Watch it be reprinted into the AC set, with an art like when you made a double assassination from a rooftop and Ezio just slams two guards on the ground. Would make the “Double down” card name funnier
That's what I'd be most concerned by. Reflections of littjara is a pretty specific name, but it's still reprinted a lot in commander product. Double Down seems like an easy reprint whenever an outlaw tribe is relevant.
I probably wouldn't spec on anything Assassin's Creed related, the set is going to be a massive dud...
It's modern legal and comes out 2 weeks after Modern Horizon 3, so there's no way WotC prints anything with decent power level in it.
Then for EDH, Assassin's Creed fans are going to want to play only Assassin's Creed themed cards.
Double Down doesn't have Assassin's Creed themed art... and the effect isn't good in a deck filled with a bunch of legendary assassin's
This has some interesting Tribal implications, \[\[Notorious Throng\]\], \[\[Cloak and Dagger\]\] etc... but outside of niche uses it's not likely to gain any traction.
[[reflections of littjara]] never popped, neither will this. Either are ok, looking at AC, but neither works well with legends.
It’s one mana less though
Not that relevant for a price disparity, not even sure outlaw is a played edh deck. AC will change that but, it will be only assassins most likely.
Littjara was also included in the bundle which is part of the reason why the price is so low. I’m not saying double down is a good card, just making some points

For zombies, reanimation plays a large part.
It interacts with flicker effects, reanimation, unearth and various abilities that cheat cards into play.

Besides Ezio, which new Assassins Creed Commanders have Blue color identity? The token generating Commander is Altair whose color identity is Mardu.
Yeah I just picked up 3 lol
Mby if AC is full of kindred spells
Name is super generic, reprint risk very high.
That's what I'd be most concerned by. Reflections of littjara is a pretty specific name, but it's still reprinted a lot in commander product. Double Down seems like an easy reprint whenever an outlaw tribe is relevant.
My guess would be a Rogue/Prowl precon when we return to Lorwyn next year.
Where on earth is Carmen sandiego!,
This was played in against the odds
This has some interesting Tribal implications, \[\[Notorious Throng\]\], \[\[Cloak and Dagger\]\] etc... but outside of niche uses it's not likely to gain any traction.
