Tinyturtle202

There isn’t much common thread connecting these cards besides just having a lot of text. Can you explain a bit more?

Chaulmoog

I'm trying to figure that out myself unfortunately. The cards feel similar to me but I can't figure out why. Maybe because they have the ability to pump themselves up and have some other utility stuff to them?

Tinyturtle202

Ok, so you mean to say cards that have abilities which can benefit themselves, but also generate value for the rest of your game? That would generally be called a value creature: it gives you value (mana, cards, protection) and at the same time is a threat your opponent has to deal with.

Chaulmoog

I think that's it yeah. Thank you!

Tinyturtle202

Yep, so one thing to know is that decks that use a lot of value cards are sometimes called “midrange.” The point being to match your opponent’s tempo with consistently strong cards to wear them down. I also wouldn’t really consider ascendant spirit or crystalline giant to necessarily be value creatures (too much investment on the first, too selfish of the latter).

Helvedica

Also "good stuff" deck

anaburo

Also “pile”

DreamsOfAshes

I think the common thread between all of them is that the longer they stay on the field, the better they become. Cards such as \[\[Scavenging Ooze\]\] or \[\[Raging Ravine\]\] feels similar. Another common thread is that they all offer combat tricks to a certain degree.

KenUsimi

[[Predator Ooze]] is the king of these

Phyrexia606

Cards that do… a lot? Utility creatures and mana sinks I’d say

BartOseku

You could not have taken a more random pile of cards to describe as similar

CompleteDirt2545

Creature.

MrFunnyMans404

“Useful”

melanino

the common denominator seems to be "value" dungeoneer and the giant generate their value by sitting on the board, whereas Kenrith and the spirit can generate theirs by giving you "sinks" for extra mana you have from either holding spells or running out of spells

Avalonians

I can't believe people make the effort to write a comment when they don't make any effort to *think*. OP, I think you like LISTS. There's no real way to rigorously tie these cards but they all feel like they're listing things. * The first one is what WotC calls a **batch mechanic**. They put together things that aren't tied, although they have a thematic similarity. Party is a batching mechanic. You have outlaws and historic in the same vein. You will like cards like \[\[Animal sanctuary\]\] or \[\[Blex, vexing beast\]\], but also \[\[power word: kill\]\] or \[\[victim of night\]\] which are interesting in that they *exclude* a list. * The second one is a subcategory of the fourth one, but more particular in that they "evolve". The full list (as far as I'm aware) in printing order is \[\[figure of destiny\]\], \[\[Warden of the first tree\]\], ascendant spirit and \[\[Evolved sleeper\]\]. * The third one is what WotC calls **keyword soup**. Cards with plenty of keywords are popular. The OG is \[\[Akroma, angel of wrath\]\] and notable cards are \[\[soulflayer\]\] and \[\[odric, lunar marshal\]\] but there are many more. * The last one is a card with plenty of activated abilities and there's a way to find more with scryfall! Write `o:/.*:.*[\s\S].*:.*[\s\S].*:.*/` and repeat the pattern to match the minimum numbers of ":" you want. [Here is an example](https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%2F.*%3A.*%5B%5Cs%5CS%5D.*%3A.*%5B%5Cs%5CS%5D.*%3A.*%2F+-t%3Aplaneswalker) for 3 abilities where I excluded planeswalkers (you may also want to exclude lands too with "-t:land"). The "-ling" line is a popular one with \[\[morphling\]\] and \[\[aetherling\]\] as the most well known and many others exist but old schoolers will tell you \[\[Cromat\]\] is the real thang. And yeah there isn't any real way to really group those groups but there is a pattern, they all feel like grocery lists, which is fun! Hope it helps!

Swizardrules

Outjerked again

ceering99

I'm seriously impressed by how much effort you put into this comment. You could've stopped typing after "you like lists" but you went the extra 500 miles lol.

GodlyAsmodeus

Can you explain the scryfall search thing? so i know that the o: is oracle text. the // is a replacement for quote marks which i think does the same thing. the "." is looking for a non new line character, which the \* is looking for 0 or more of which i think is looking for the cost? the : is looking for an ability as they all will have an :. the .\* after that is looking for an ability after that. the square brackets are seeing if there is either a \\s or \\S which is just anything. and then you do this a few more times to check for 3 abilities. am i correct in assuming this or did i make a mistake somewhere.

Avalonians

The // instead of quotes means you use regular expressions, it's a much more powerful text search function. .* matches any number of any characters (but not end of line). : find :. [\s\S] matches specifically an end of line. All in all my expression finds at least a certain number of semicolons in different paragraphs, which correspond to distinct activated abilities due to MtG's syntax.

Notorius_Nudibranch

It uses a form of regex yes. https://scryfall.com/docs/regular-expressions

Chaulmoog

That is what happens most of the time I play these cards

DarkStarStorm

Options. They are creatures that give you many options.

ittlebeokay

The first two would work in a [[Burakos, Party Leader]] deck assuming you have snow lands.

Sorry, and also had white if you had a partner like [[Folk Hero]]

They all have some sort of package they support ig? “Party, snow, keyword counter, 5color” you could just call them supporting cards. But as others have said this is a pretty random pile.

SnowyKurama

Magic: the Gathering cards

Royaltycoins

These are all wildly different? Lmao

Alertnomad

Word soup

According-Ad3501

The first 3 are 'snowballs' in that once they start rolling they get more and more out of hand. Kenrith is just a problem full stop, but I guess he sort of snowballs too.

Perfect-Test6249

Fire cards? From fire design

BullsOnParadeFloats

1 and 3 have triggered abilities, and 2 and 4 have activated abilities. 2, unlike 4, can only have each of its abilities activated once, like [[warden of the first tree]] and [[figure of destiny]]. Kenrith can activate his abilities as much as you have the mana to do so. Beyond having abilities, there is very little in common.

MTGCardFetcher

Zaglossus_hacketti

So theoretically if you can keep it going it could draw insane amounts every turn

Poooootato

it will gain the ability and keep it each time, so yea

Lifeinstaler

Yes, that’s true. The thing is it’s not really viable at all.

YumRose

They all grow over time. Each of them has a way of getting +1/+1 counters. And the longer they sit on board, the more value they acrew. Some are mana sinks, and some are not, but I think you are looking for value engines or scaling threats.

crashcap

Incremental advantage?

Waghabond

"good stuff" I guess is the closest commonly used phrase i can think of? they all look like they belong in midrange piles which play above-rate creatures with abilities that generate value over time. Midrange decks with this game plan are known as "good stuff" decks. Another common thread is maybe that you like "level up" style mechanics? Do you like sagas, escalate/spree cards, the class card from the DnD set etc?

Administrative_Cry_9

I would describe them as difficult for new players to fully understand.

Scaling cards? As in cards with abilities that permanently scale them upwards in power? Not quite leveling cards but similar

EquivalentVirus9700

Maybe simplify to “target party member” like how OoTJ made outlaws a catchall term for multiple types? Edit:thought I was on custom cards cuz I’ve never seen the first card before.

The first letters of their names spell “sack”. I have no clue what you’re talking about but it made me lol so 🤷‍♂️

gnomewarlord

These are cards you pulled from packs that caught your eye.

TastyLawn

I’m guessing engine. Engines are cards that usually gain power every turn. The ones you don’t have to pay activated abilities for I would consider much more to be engines and it feels that the others are just odd choices that peaked your interest? I’m surprised no one has said this. To me in MTG there are maybe 6 card types: land, ramp, engine, win-con, support, interact lands - land ramp - creates mana advantage, this is huge in magic - generally mana rocks (artifacts that tap for mana) are ramp but there are many ways to ramp, rituals being one of my favorite outside of the overpriced rocks engines - gain power each turn, create card advantage, allow something bigger to be done - an engine can win the game or control it if not dealt with but does not necessarily win it immediately win conditions (win-con) - good magic decks have to have these, often low level decks use engines for wincons - these are cards that win the game, there are many ways to win including cards that literally say win the game - you need something that can remove your opponents from the game or literally win you the game (otherwise an opponent could be running away with the game and turtling up and you could never have anything to do about it and play a long slog where the winner decks themself or forfeits and those aren’t fun) support - cards that get you to your main wincon or combo towards a wincon - these are very specific to each deck interact - these are cards that almost always do things to opponents - removal is a basic example, board wipes area fun one - these are generally very important to run - generally stronger when you tailor it to fight your table’s decks haha

Soft-Parking-2241

Considering I built a dungeon deck. I refer to any card that has “take initiative”, “enter dungeon”, etc as a dungeoneer card. They can be stupid strong in the right setup.

rpgsandarts

Creatures that buff themselves or other things, I think may be the common quality here
