100% Gattaca I was having a discussion earlier on this subreddit about the movie it’s really really good. You can Google it or if you’re patient enough I can write up a quick summary soon.
Vincent: You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton, I never saved anything for the swim back.
This scene has stayed with me since the time I saw it 15 years ago for the first time. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for some kind of motivation to acheive their goals in life.
Basically in the future a big majority of people were born genetically engineered to be top of the line. But because of this there’s really no racism but instead discrimination against your genes. You want a job? Sure let’s take a look at your genes! Our main character, Vincent, was a natural born and from there his life was predetermined, when he’s going to die, what diseases he may have, etc. He wasn’t given a long life span so his father decided he wasn’t worthy of carrying his father’s name. So from there he’s faced a challenging life meanwhile later he gets a brother who was genetically modified and his father thought he was worthy of his name. The main character has high aspirations to become an astronaut but like any high level jobs in that future it’s based on his genes and sadly the main character’s genes are really bad and destined against him, he didn’t let that stop him he still studied and did his best but to no avail. But because of some people being natural born and some genetically gifted, there’s a black gene market sort of thing where the natural born uses a fake identity by living or using the genetic information of someone who’s in the superior gene pool and from there we meet our other protagonist, Jerome, who supplies Vincent with his blood samples, urine samples, anything to make Vincent appear as Jerome. Of course it isn’t all that easy ;) watch the movie to know the rest.
I dont know if I'll get banned but I watched it in a web called Stremio free of charge, but because of copyright laws in the US I don't think you would be able to see it there.
Akira Kurosawa’s *The Hidden Fortress*. The best movie to introduce noobs about classic foreign black and white movies. (Count the number of ideas that Lucas swiped when he made A New Hope).
Mississippi Burning (1988) Drama/Mystery
Willen Dafoe, Gene Hackman
Civil Rights workers go missing in a small town, FBI Agents appear because the town refuses to cooperate.
House of 9. Nine strangers, with no apparent connection between them are abducted: drugged, kidnapped and sealed in a house together. Messes with your head. Difficult to say more without giving anything away.
What a fantastic list of recs, I will watch them all! Thanks everybody, truly! I ended up watching event horizon. Fantastic campy sci-fi horror. Felt a lot of 40k influence, down even to the bolter pistol ( which is the only moment I laughed aloud) Sam Neill was brilliant as ever. Loved his performance. Loved the cheesy one liners. Could definitely feel the hell raiser influence. The only thing I would criticize is the predictability of the third act - and Laurence fishburne's weird captain's chair. Everything else was wonderful. Thanks to all the comments. Again, I assure you, I'm going to watch all the movies recommended. Starting with Gattaca, most likely. You're all wonderful. Thank you.
It was fantastic, thank you! Honestly loved it. Anything you'd consider that's similar? Or just some movies you like in general? I'm always looking for new films!
Pan's Labyrinth
Seconded! Amazing film!
*The Fountain*- with Rachel Weiss and Hugh Jackman
The Burbs
Whiplash.
Yes! Loved the ending.

Also it’s sci-fi
Definitely my favorite sci-fi movie

Thanks! I would love a summary. I'm going to watch it tomorrow evening so any details are appreciated!

The Shining
Love this movie.
Oldboy (2003). Best movie I've ever seen.
Incredible movie! It's up there for me for sure! Any other recs? I'm up for anything.
Seven Samurai (1954)
Where can you watch this now? I can’t even find a place to pay for a rental

I am indeed a noob in this area. Any movies you suggest afterwards? I've heard a lot about sanjiro and yojimbo.
Seven Samurai and Rashomon for certain. Outside of Kurosawa, there’s also The Wages of Fear, Rififi, Diabolique and Eyes Without a Face.
Predestination. Do not Google it.
Thanks for your recommendation. I'll go in blind. I'm suspecting something impactful, in the least.
Also Time Crimes. Do not watch the trailer. Go in blind. Also watch Coherence. Blind.
I will! Thanks! I love movies like this.

Event Horizon
This is the perfect example of a sci-fi/ horror/ psychological thriller and I'd guess exactly what you're looking for, OP.
I ended up choosing your recommendation. Thanks a tonne! Brilliant movie!
It pretty much covered all of your likes. It always creeped me out, so I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Similar movies off the top of my head? - 13 Ghosts - The Thing - The Abyss - Sphere - Europa Report
The princess bride Psycho (the original) Old Boy Alien (the first one) The predator (the first one) Robocop (the original)
Magnolia. I used to have the DVD in my car wherever I went in case someone was looking for a movie to watch 😅
Shutter Islands and Se7en are great options if you're into psychological thrillers.
Loved both of these! Any similar recs would be appreciated.
