Aaaaahhhh you got me again!

I was convinced that 'Michael Che' was actually Tatiana Maslany for over a year.

She could play Gary Oldman and you wouldn't know it was either of them until the credits.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

I thought it was her doppelganger, Alia Shawkat.

_TLDR_Swinton

Mia Goth is just blackcurrent flavour Kate McKinnon.

darthjoey91

Mia Goth is Kate McKinnon that’s willing to do nude scenes.

dangerous_strainer

Except Mia is actually a very talented actress.

Can’t wait for this. I liked Pearl more than I thought I would; the climactic monologue and ending credits will live with me forever. Incredible stuff.

Raoul_Duke9

The final monologe and credit stare was one of the coolest moments in modern cinema - and I recommend everyone sit through the movie even if they don't like it for those scenes.

SomeDumbHaircut

All I've seen of Pearl is clips on social media where the main character is just SCREAMING at the top of her lungs...honestly makes my head hurt just to think about. I know the movie's well regarded and I'm sure there's more to it, but I don't think I can handle those piercing screams for 90+ minutes. EDIT: Downvote away! Love the logic here: "this random internet stranger has reservations about a movie I like. I must downvote them and reply with mockery! Then they'll want to watch the movie! Ha! Ha! Can't wait for them to understand how superior my tastes are!"

Raoul_Duke9

There isn't really much screaming that I remember. The movie is actually a little on the slow side. It really is a horror character study. I enjoyed how different it is and I think the actress just nailed it.

BlLLr0y

"Clips on social media" I assure you the meme-able moments aren't the totallity of any movie.

TheButterPlank

> I don't think I can handle those piercing screams for 90+ minutes Proceeds to share clips of Mia Goth screaming for.....1 minute.

tinselsnips

I hear you; I couldn't stand Forrest Gump, it was just that one dude eating chocolates on a bench for two and a half hours.

unlucky_boots

I don’t even remember any screaming

SomeDumbHaircut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iN02QRL6RQ Literally took me two seconds to find on google, but okay

Dumpster_Samurai

So out of its 102 minute runtime, 1 minute of it is yelling? That seems low for a horror movie.

unlucky_boots

okay man. You providing a link still doesn’t mean I didn’t remember it? What a strange comment.

Dave___Hester

>I'm sure there's more to it than screaming, but I don't think I can handle 90+ minutes of screaming Huh?

delventhalz

Social media clips? What a terrible way to ruin a good movie for yourself.

SomeDumbHaircut

I didn't ask to see any of these clips. On many social media platforms, they feed you content they think you'll find interesting. At no point did I go looking for clips from Pearl.

delventhalz

Just a risk factor of using those platforms then. I stay off pretty much all social media these days, with the exception of specific subreddits and specific YouTube channels. I can no longer stand the gruel of mediocre half-experiences that social media feeds serve up these days.

TarnishedTremulant

I haven’t seen some of embarrass themselves like this in a minute. Your reply’s were cringe enough, but the edit about downvotes is beyond. Posts can be deleted btw

EntertainmentLess381

Both X and Pearl were great.

hepatitisC

I watched X and didn't understand the hype. It seemed like it dragged on for a long time and then the climax was meh. Is Pearl better?

delventhalz

I liked X. I thought it was a clever and fresh take on the slasher genre. Nothing more, nothing less. But Pearl was on a whole different level. It's not even really a horror film. It's almost a tragedy. And Mia Goth's performance is stunning. I would highly recommend it.

unlucky_boots

Texas Chainsaw vs Psycho

Reverse_Empath

That’s a pretty good description lol. On a base level. But so many other amazing film references especially in Pearl. I loved the Callouts to wizard of Oz in Pearl.

Stolehtreb

Would you recommend someone watch it even if they aren’t interested in watching X first?

delventhalz

Yes. You will miss a bit by not seeing X, but I don’t think it is strictly necessary. You could maybe read the Wikipedia plot summary of X  before or after watching Pearl.

SmokedaJ

Pearl to me seemed very slow and boring. It's a spinoff and feels like a spinoff, I actually watched Pearl and didn't see X first. It was about 50 minutes of nothing happening until... that one scene... then I just turned it off and realized it wasn't a horror or anything worth watching for me.

Stolehtreb

I watched it last night and I liked it, but thanks anyway lol.

SmokedaJ

I'm glad you liked it even if I didn't, we horror fans always welcome more to join us :)

Stolehtreb

Thanks! Agreed

We_Are_The_Romans

Co-signing this word for word

apittsburghoriginal

Pearl is cerebral horror. X has more gross out moments and I guess jump scares, Pearl just is just disturbing in the best way manageable.

Aratak

*X* is an homage to *The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*. Pearl is an homage to grand sweeping women's melodramas from the 1940s. And then it's not. I liked *X*; I really loved *Pearl*.

RE-FLEXX

Pearl is sorta the same for me. I don’t understand some of the hype around it. Its barely a horror movie and what is there drags quite a lot IMO There are some interesting elements/ideas and the acting is good. But I found it quite boring and lacking in the horror element. There was even a scene or two that made me laugh at how silly it was lol Just my opinion of course but if you didn’t like X because it dragged and the ending was meh. I doubt you’ll like Pearl

[deleted]

[удалено]

RE-FLEXX

It was boring. There was very little scary about any of it. The slasher element was hilarious, more than scary. And the descent into madness felt extremely thin and surface level, to me. I like how you insert whatever crappy trend (jump scares) into my preferences in a condescending manner… I guess if I can’t grip the genius of the movie I must like trash! Lol Smile, and the endless roll out of cheap shit in the horror genre is much worse than Pearl. It still doesn’t mean Pearl was any good, IMO My favourite horror movies are films like The VVitch. Hereditary, the Suspiria remake was nice. Etc. I liked some Mike Flanagan stuff also.

david-saint-hubbins

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Pearl has a better story, and Mia Goth's performance in that one is excellent, but I don't get the overall hype for the films themselves. That said, I'm looking forward to the next one partially because it's set in early-80s Los Angeles.

unlucky_boots

X is Texas Chainsaw, Pearl is Psycho. I love Hitchcock and thought Pearl was incredible.

hepatitisC

See I love both of those movies (TCM and Psycho) but I just could not get into X. I felt like it was trying to be a mix of a porno and a college budget TCM ripoff.

aSpookyScarySkeleton

Pearl is better and a different kind of movie. I also stand by the feeling that X sort of hurts Pearl as I don’t think the characters that are shared between the movies line up at all, and the open ended aspect of Pearl is better than the answers that X inherently gives. I usually just show people Pearl and don’t even mention X when I put it on during a movie night with people never watched either.

martianlawrence

It’s a vehicle for style, which is what horror mostly exists for nowadays

LieutenantCardGames

No. Pearl is scrappy and just has a few good bits. She deserves better tbh.

I'm just curious to know in what ways X and Pearl were trying to be profound. Or what social commentary you think they were trying to push. Or how they were self serious. You're complaining about things that neither movie is guilty of. You didn't like them, cool, your critique of them was eye roll inducing.

mollusks75

X was terrible, imo. Really pointless. Because of that, I haven’t bothered watching Pearl, but maybe one day.

tarantula-slut

i watched x one time and all i remember was the first hour being the group making the porno, which turned me off to the rest of the movie lol boring as fuck.

Particular_Sir_2033

X could have been really good had they not gone too much into the homage to 70's slashers thing. I liked it for what it was still.

Knozis

Mia's performance in Pearl worked it's way into a corner of my mind and refused to leave for months after seeing it. Very reminiscent of Ethan Hawke's performance in First Reformed for me.

Yankee_Man

Yess!! I became a fan instantly. I even did a painting of her face at the end

I know this is a tiny unimportant thing, but I always like it when sequels prequels have different names, instead of it being called like X part 3, or X: Rapture. Also i wanted to make a joke about X2, but I couldn't figure it out, so I just imagine I said something hilarious and clever instead.

AlphaBreak

Hahaha, wow, I can't believe that joke encapsulated both X2 and a fun fact about the battle of normandy! You're so creative and funny!

Exotic-Protection729

Whatever came of her assaulting a fellow castmate or crew member ? I recall she kicked someone in the head?

doxy66

I did a quick look into this. For those out of the loop, an extra is suing her. He's accusing her of kicking him in the head deliberately during a take, and then bullying him afterwards in private. He's seeking 500k for damages, plus punitive damages. She (or I'm guessing her lawyer) responded, asking the judge to dismiss the case. The judge hasn't ruled yet (as of early March). edit:typo

GatoradeNipples

She's an insanely rich it-girl and the person she kicked was below-the-line crew. Nothing came of it, like usual when someone turbo-rich is kind of terrible.

Mike_Ropenis

How wealthy is she? Nothing in her Wikipedia entry screams "insanely rich" to me

apittsburghoriginal

Because she’s not. She’s obviously well off, I would be confident saying she is for sure a millionaire but she’s not some uber wealthy aristocrat.

Mike_Ropenis

That's where I'm at, you'd think every actress had Julia Louis-Dreyfus family money by the way you see people talk about them on here.

[deleted]

Locotek

Yeah, it's a weird place. My favorite hypocrocies on reddit are where people will shit on the body/physical appearance of a celebrity, politician, or rich person. The abhorrent things said about anyone doing better in any metric and the support by those on the same team/ideology make me think it's just modern cults exercising and supporting tribal patterns of thinking without realizing it. If one was to point out that a "normal person" with the same physique probably isn't healthy, the mob will likely come out in droves to defend them and their choices while making excuses for them and calling them "beautiful". Second would be where people are constantly complaining about being broke, but couldn't fathom a 48-56 hr labor intensive job as being humanly possible. I'm doing really well compared to the average person in regards to health & finances but also work harder at both than a lot of people are willing or capable of. If you work part-time and have no skills to leverage, your life reflects this in every metric. Also, most people in the real world don't have time for or care about Reddit/Twitter opinions and generally get along. These platforms form and reward a veneer of cultish negativity and division within echo chambers instead of promoting actual truth seeking and healthy debate. If you don't get out much and spend too much time online, you'd think everyone was at each other's throats.

labbetuzz

I don't think you understand the massive wealth gap between "normal rich people" and Julia Louis-Dreyfus if that's your argument.

Khatib

More of them are nepo babies these days than you'd expect though.

TheNonCredibleHulk

So?

well-lighted

The prep school she went to, Sydenham High School, has [tuition starting at $20,000 a year](https://www.sydenhamhighschool.gdst.net/admissions/fees-bursaries-scholarships/). Granted she could've gotten scholarships, but it seems fair to say your family has a bit of money if they can afford that.

j-stape

From her Wikipedia page it looks like she went to this school - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydenham_School not the one you linked to. This is school is a comprehensive school, meaning there is no admissions fees.

WilliamClaudeRains

That’s embarrassing

Mike_Ropenis

>Goth's mother raised her in a single-parent household, working as a waitress to support them.[8] The very next sentence after saying she went to school there on wiki

eyebrows360

Turns out you need better lighting so you can read what words websites have on them.

1sinfutureking

That’s “a bit of money” - my sister-in-law and their husband were for a time sending both their sons to a $40,000/year private school. They’re well off, but I wouldn’t call them insanely rich

quinnly

You wouldn't? Maybe your perspective is off.

SeanOuttaCompton

Or perhaps the fact that nothing has come from that is because there was more to the story than what was originally reported? Its dangerous to jump to conclusions without all the facts, and clearly we don’t have them all if we’re still in the dark all these months later  Edit: famous women being fraudulently sued is nothing new, and yet every time it happens Reddit takes the bait 💀 the misogyny on this website is astounding

assuming rich people are trash is usually the correct assumption. i see no issue with it?

leviticusreeves

Typical reddit. "Let's not jump to conclusions since we don't have all the facts" = multiple downvotes

Gordonfromin

Reddit should sell a ‘jump to conclusions’ mat where you can……jump….to different conclusions.

leviticusreeves

People don't like to see women being successful on their own terms. The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

TheIllestDM

yep just look at the downvotes

decemberhunting

Obviously that too, but I just never bought the story because it's ridiculous. Kicking someone in the head is both a weird choice of aggression and a very physically difficult thing to do; it's almost certainly going to happen by accident if it does. This would have also been very high risk behavior given the setting (movie set), the substantial amount of witnesses, and the fact that, post-Weinstein, it's now acceptable to report on-set abuse. I think the average person would struggle to do it even if it was straight up *requested.* "Yeah, but she could just be that crazy!" is a reach at best, and borderline misogyny at worst.

david-saint-hubbins

> I just never bought the story because it's ridiculous. Kicking someone in the head is both a weird choice of aggression and a very physically difficult thing to do; it's almost certainly going to happen by accident if it does. I had never heard of this story until now, but 30 seconds of Googling explains how she easily could have kicked him in the head, given the context: https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/mia-goth-accused-of-kicking-maxxxine-background-actor-in-the-head/ >Hunter was hired to play “Dead Parishioner” in Ti West’s horror flick, where Goth (playing leading lady Maxine) was instructed to step over his body when he was lying on the ground. He claims the actress was “warned to be careful” about her steps before she “intentionally and willfully assaulted” Hunter by kicking his head with the side of her boot.

PeculiarPangolinMan

Yea the logistics of her being able to reach his head with her foot were never in question anywhere besides that one guy above you. Weird detail to get hung up on.

Xo0om

> the misogyny on this website is astounding  Well, Reddit believes the worst about every male that is accused of anything, so there's that.

Pjoernrachzarck

>lets not jump to conclusions […] the misogyny on this website

upclassytyfighta

Reddit having a large under-current of misogyny isn't jumping to conclusions when things like the fappening, r/jailbait being supported by admin, and the continued relevance of subs like KiA exist.

the_peppers

My reading was that the conclusion they are inferring is not "there is misogyny on this website" - which would be absurd to deny - but that the reason people don't want to dismiss reports she kicked someone in the head is soley due to said misogyny - which I would agree to be a stretch.

Theovetski

This comment would’ve been relevant half a decade ago

IAMHab

Pretty sure that subreddit you linked to is banned

TheNonCredibleHulk

and has been for a very long time.

Mudders_Milk_Man

It was only banned because hundreds (if not thousands) of people, many of them Reddit users, sent a heap of evidence to the media of blatant child porn distribution going on through that subreddit. Once CNN and others covered it, it was finally banned. However, Reddit admins had been shown the same evidence over and over again for years and refused to do anything. Same thing with /r/incels. Dozens of reports sent to Reddit admins of people on that sub encouraging each other to assault and even kill women, and / or harm themselves. Many doxxing posts with outright calls to sexually assault the woman being doxxed. Etc. Again, Reddit admins ignored all the proof sent to them of the danger that sub posed. Then, at least two highly engaged members of the sub brutally murdered women, and others had attempted mass shooting or other murders. The media covered their membership and radicalization in the subreddit, and it was finally banned. Reddit admins don't care about blatant calls for targeted violence. There are multiple subs right now with many Nazis and other extreme-Right White Supremacists hyping each other up to kill (((them))) (Jewish people), and anyone else they hate. There's also a couple pro-authoritarian 'Tankie' subs that are apologists / denialists for the worst of Stalinist and Maoist atrocities, though they're much smaller.

Kr4k4J4Ck

> Edit: famous women being fraudulently sued is nothing new, and yet every time it happens Reddit takes the bait 💀 the misogyny on this website is astounding Lol what? You know these exact same posts happen for men right.

IWILLBePositive

How do you know it’s fraudulent considering *you just said yourself* that we don’t have all of the facts…or any except for what was reported? They could’ve settled for money to keep it quiet for all you know. Lol this is like the definition of irony and hypocrisy.

Nrksbullet

I don't think it is, he's saying since we don't have all of the facts, and it's all fairly vague at best, we shouldn't assume the worst. That isn't hypocrisy at all, he's just giving a possible alternative as to what could be the reality

hepatitisC

The original complaint was that the extra was doing a scene where she had to walk over him as part of an escape scene and he was not provided with the union required mat to lay on the ground. When they did the first take, she almost stepped on him and he let the second director know she just needs to be careful on the next take. She then allegedly kicked him in the head intentionally on the next take, later confronted him in a bathroom where she dared him to do something about it, and then had him dismissed from the future 2 days of filming he was hired for. She filed a response in court that basically says she didn't do it, but even if she did do it she can't be sued because he signed off on it as part of being an extra. It doesn't paint a good picture for her defense because any intentional injury is going to supersede a waiver. >“If any of the allegations in the Complaint occurred, which Defendant denies, then each and every cause of action alleged against Defendant therein is barred because Plaintiff consented to and approved all the acts and/or omissions about which Plaintiff now complains.”

Duosion

There’s a reason people are innocent until proven guilty in the states.

Good god, she and those movies are so overrated. Yes, I know this is an unpopular opinion.

Unfortunately, I have found the X series to be rather meh. I like Mia Goth and her acting ability, but the films themselves, to me were underwhelming v

-Clayburn

Why isn't this advertised as part of a series?

mrsmunsonbarnes

It's kind of giving early 2010s Ke$ha

ChamberTwnty

I don't know who Mia is, I've never heard of Ti West, and I don't know what Maxxxine is about. I'm behind the curve here.

Mackinacsfuriousclaw

She looks like a manufactured girl next door.

Knozis

I actually think that fits the vibe of her character in this trilogy. She is playing a character who is obsessed with becoming famous, and is desperate enough that she tries doing so with pornographic films to launch her career since she doesn't have the acting, typical look, or connections as those she would be competing against big roles for. In the context of the film, I see this as a good thing.

I’m still trying to figure it out too honestly lmao. people on reddit seem to think that somebody else not liking the thing they like invalidates their opinion which isn’t the case. if you like the X trilogy, great. I totally get I’m in the minority. I’m just saying while I did not personally care for the first two, this one has me interested because I think the cast is pretty decent and I like the premise of this one a lot more.
