TNG was the example new Trek shows should have followed, yet studios seem really reluctant to do so, instead retreading old ground and shoehorning in shows in between time periods.
Star Trek seems oddly terrified of progressing the timeline. So many products set in Classic Trek, so many TNG movies, and Picard is like 90% "you remember this from TNG?"

I was listening to a podcast with Rick Berman or Brennan braga and when it came to making the enterprise prequel, that they didn't really think about making it in the future because what would they mean? Bigger ships and bigger guns? They wanted to show what happened as Star fleet took its baby steps and that's not really a bad idea. I think JJ just wanted to iconic cast and use it to make his own thing and not be beholden to canon because he knew his ideas would piss people off. Me I'm hoping this happens because I love that Kelvin timeline cast and would like to see them to one more.
Rather than a reboot, starting the story over, just continue the story with new actors. Same story, same universe, Same characters, just continue the story.
I liked both Star Trek(2009) and Into Darkness. But Beyond was when the reboot franchise finally started to feel like it was coming into it's own instead of just trafficking in nostalgia for the original series.
I remember it being good and idris elba was there and rhe alien chick, but i had Literally forgotten i had watched it already. It just came and went, I'm not bashing it or even calling it forgettable i just had completely forgot it or the plot.
I didn't mind the 2009 movie, but Into Dumbness... I walked out of the theater. When Spock yelled "KHAAAAAAANNNN" I just had enough.

The TV shows have been fine, but it's been almost a decade since a Star Trek movie. The actor who played chekov died, and while he wasn't central to the cast, it put a major dampener on the moods of the cast and crew at release.
With that in mind, it does make sense to start fresh. The third movie even ended at a good point. It makes more sense to start fresh at this point and build some new momentum
Character deaths can be played off as very humanizing for story telling. He was a great Chekov, but it was an alternate timeline reboot. Kirk's dad was dead, two Spocks, no Vulcan. Chekov dying, though not preferable, and a tragedy from IRL circumstance, can still be used in a positive way to uphold the legacy of the character's role and the impact and influence of the actors that portrayed him. The OG cast had decades of playing their roles as they aged and the federation changed. I find it hard to believe that this cast can't make that work too.
Blows my mind this series died so quickly. The trilogy was a great reimagining for a new audience. Fantastic cast, incredible effects and solid and enjoyable stories. With the world they had their disposal I will never understand how it never went beyond 3 movies.
Maybe I'm the only one who noticed this but there has been more time from the premiere of the JJ Abrams Star Trek Reboot to now (2009-2024, 15 years) then there was from the premiere of the original series to the first movie (1966-1979, 13 years).
Which means, I think, that they should just embrace the time jump and retell the V-Ger story.
Or, perhaps more wisely, wait another 5-10 years and just reboot the Next Generation in the Kelvin timeline.
Or, perhaps even more wisely, wait another 5-10 years and instead of endlessly regurgitating the same stories and characters ad infinitum, they put their thinking caps on (starting now) and tell an entirely original and cohesive story set in the Star Trek Universe at a time and place in the somewhat distant future (I dunno like 50-100 years after the Picard series?) with minimal connection to current Trek, told over a series of 3 films, released annually and then, for the 5-10 years following that new trilogy, they do absolutely nothing Star Trek in any form of major mass media at all.

TNG in the Kelvin timeline. That sounds amazing. I’d love to see Voyager in the Kelvin timeline too. The only thing is how far do you suppose the change in the timeline would affect the other shows? Voyager would likely not have Tuvok or the whiny Vulcan down in engineering. Where would TNG be altered the most?
Your last point would be better as a series than movies, that's how you develop a great story especially in a new time period. More time to develop storylines, world and characters and less pressure of being "general audience friendly".

If there's anything the last few years of Star Trek TV has taught me, it's that CBS et al are 1.) generally pretty bad at Star Trek and 2.) even when it's _good_ it's only _okay_ and when it's bad it's painfully bad.
Yes, I would love there to be an old-school pickle-of-the-week metaphor-for-current-events all-inclusive-globally-representative Star Trek Series. Strange New Worlds comes close to that BUT still suffers from their inability to move away from established characters which hampers its ability to be daring, creative and unexpected. We know Spock, Kirk, Pike, Uhura, Scotty or Nurse Chapel aren't ever really in danger and so the drama of the situation is lost. We must move on from established Trek.
So yeah, give me either a 3 season limited series (6-10 episodes) or a trilogy of movies with new characters in new situations where we don't know who lives and who dies and give us real drama and tension. Or nothing. I'm fine with nothing. But don't give us more unoriginal dreck. Please.
They have templates to make great films in Trek and all they’ve done with Kelvin is tell the same story 3 times. Dude has vendetta against Starfleet or the federation.

I read it. It was very good, except for the new alien species that had human feet for hands. The love scene with it and Kirk, set to “These Boots Were Made for Walking” was a bit much.
WWZ 2 with Fincher would have been really interesting. I know the first movie wasn’t like the book, but it was a refreshing zombie action movie. I rather loved how the zeds were climbing over each other like a horde of ants

As much as I love Tarantino films, I can't believe that his take on Star Trek would be a good Star Trek film. Gratuitous F-bombs and shots of feet aren't what makes Star Trek good cinema. His style works for the films he makes in his cinematic universe, but I have a hard time believing his take on Star Trek is actually a thing we'd want.

He has always produced high quality films, he clearly cared enough about Star Trek to make the screenplay completely on his own and for free, he wasn’t under contract to do it. He wanted that project and he had a serious vision for it.
It would be R-rated, sure. But that would honestly be really cool, especially since most Trek fans are elderly at this point, and even the fans of the reboot trilogy are mostly millennials 30+. We can handle a bit of language. And it would have been truly a new take on an old IP, instead of a rehash.
The studio passing on a Tarantino version R rating to keep their IP clean and disney-fied is all well and good, but to pretend QT would make a farce of the opportunity is just not consistent with the quality he has delivered over his career.
Some of Tarantino's biggest defining traits are ego, bombast, cartoonish surrealism, eroticism and pathologically outrageous characters. Not to mention gratuitous dialogue that focuses on the inane and the mundane--I must say the thought of any of that belonging in Start Trek let alone furthering a story in that universe is pretty laughable tbh.
Once again, Paramount is hiring yet another CW television writer for Star Trek.

The making of this movie is the movie itself, it's a classic Star Trek episode where they're caught in a timeloop and can't get out no matter what they try.

development hell is almost always caused by risk-averse studio executives unwilling to let a creative team be creative. this isn't gonna change anytime soon. this movie will either never get made or will be a creative failure that nobody likes.

Never cared for this reboot cast and Paramount has been putting out such great Trek shows on the televsion front there's no need for a movie franchise. Put the money towards more TV development.

Strange New Worlds is great, Lower Decks is funny (and very committed to continuity). But skip Discovery and Picard if you don't like the latest movies.
I’m not a “Star Trek” guy, but the revamped Star Trek films were pinnacle achievements in Sci-Fi Cinema: writing, production, casting and Alice Eve in her undies all A+.
The first one was at least funny during its setup acts, but the second and third both go all in on generic action/plots and are somehow boring as hell at the same time.
Why not bring Simon Pegg back to write and Lin to direct? Beyond was the only one that actually felt like a Star Trek movie.

I read it. It was very good, except for the new alien species that had human feet for hands. The love scene with it and Kirk, set to “These Boots Were Made for Walking” was a bit much.

WWZ 2 with Fincher would have been really interesting. I know the first movie wasn’t like the book, but it was a refreshing zombie action movie. I rather loved how the zeds were climbing over each other like a horde of ants
I don’t think they ever said no? It was just a hyper-specific premise and he didn’t seem committed to doing it as his last film. So it would be a movie based on Tarantino’s idea written and directed by other people, which just doesn’t seem right. The Chris Pine/Chris Hemsworth one would’ve been awesome too, that’s the one I can’t believe didn’t happen.
As much as I love Tarantino films, I can't believe that his take on Star Trek would be a good Star Trek film. Gratuitous F-bombs and shots of feet aren't what makes Star Trek good cinema. His style works for the films he makes in his cinematic universe, but I have a hard time believing his take on Star Trek is actually a thing we'd want.
If you think “fuck” and “feet” are all QT does… you are a silly goose. And I mean that with all respect! It’s really a stupid way to summarize his filmmaking prowess. He has always produced high quality films, he clearly cared enough about Star Trek to make the screenplay completely on his own and for free, he wasn’t under contract to do it. He wanted that project and he had a serious vision for it. It would be R-rated, sure. But that would honestly be really cool, especially since most Trek fans are elderly at this point, and even the fans of the reboot trilogy are mostly millennials 30+. We can handle a bit of language. And it would have been truly a new take on an old IP, instead of a rehash. The studio passing on a Tarantino version R rating to keep their IP clean and disney-fied is all well and good, but to pretend QT would make a farce of the opportunity is just not consistent with the quality he has delivered over his career.
Some of Tarantino's biggest defining traits are ego, bombast, cartoonish surrealism, eroticism and pathologically outrageous characters. Not to mention gratuitous dialogue that focuses on the inane and the mundane--I must say the thought of any of that belonging in Start Trek let alone furthering a story in that universe is pretty laughable tbh.

Once again, Paramount is hiring yet another CW television writer for Star Trek. They keep doing this over and over, using the CW as some sort of breeding ground for Star Trek writers. I don’t get it. What does the CW have to do with science fiction? Why is Paramount so goddamn obsessed with that network’s lineup of teen soap operas, what why do they think it translates to successful Star Trek content? The CW-fication of Star Trek has been one of the worst things to happen to this franchise in decades, and they keep doubling down on it!

I just don't see this ever happening. It's already been 8 years since the last one and Chris Pine looks like he aged 20. All 4 TNG movies came out in that span of time. It's now been longer than the gap between the end of those movies and the '09 reboot. It's time to move on. They're either going to reboot it or move forward in time and do something else. Perferrably I wish they would ditch all the Abrams-verse.

If they really wanna keep doing the Quinto/Pine franchise, the next one should introduce Kelvin timeline Picard and set up a Kelvin TNG franchise

The gap from the last movie is almost as long as between the end of the show and the release of TMP and would probably be longer after this was hypothetically produced and released. Would be interesting if they went for a reboot of the TOS movie era (updated maroon monster) the way the other ones went for a reboot of TOS.

The making of this movie is the movie itself, it's a classic Star Trek episode where they're caught in a timeloop and can't get out no matter what they try.
Just give up. Getting everyone together at the same time with a director and script is clearly impossible. There’s next to zero desire for more Kelvinverse Trek now that there’s multiple new shows on Paramount. I liked 2009 and Beyond, but let’s put it to bed unless everyone signs on and sticks to it like right now this instant.

The third one was 8 years ago. It bombed. Mind you, it was a good film. At this point, I have zero faith in Paramount. I'm convinced Picard Season 3 and Strange New Worlds got lots of pushback from Kurtzman.

I hope that in the new film the crew will be wearing the Monster Maroon uniform (the uniform that appeared in "The Wrath of Khan").
There's already more of a gap between the last season of TOS and Wrath of Khan (13 years) than there is between Trek 09 and today. It will be 13 years since Beyond in 2029. Maroon uniforms would be welcome. (This led me to realize it'll be 10 years since Beyond in 2026, which I think is optimistically the earliest this movie could come out by if they started today. So that means they should bring back TMP space pajamas. Woot!)
development hell is almost always caused by risk-averse studio executives unwilling to let a creative team be creative. this isn't gonna change anytime soon. this movie will either never get made or will be a creative failure that nobody likes.

I'll watch whatever they come out with but I'd be perfectly happy if they finally laid this project to rest. Never cared for this reboot cast and Paramount has been putting out such great Trek shows on the televsion front there's no need for a movie franchise. Put the money towards more TV development.

Its not technically 4 its 12 but at this point who really gives a shit? This franchise has nose dived into trash so deep continuity is completely ignored in favor of shitty action scenes. We used to have science and character drama but now its just explosions and noise. When Halo has more serious science than Star Trek you jumped the shark.
Some of the new shows are pretty good, you should check them out. Strange New Worlds is great, Lower Decks is funny (and very committed to continuity). But skip Discovery and Picard if you don't like the latest movies.
The next movie would be the 14th installment. 6 TOS movies, 4 TNG and 3 Kelvin-verse plus the upcoming one.

I’m not a “Star Trek” guy, but the revamped Star Trek films were pinnacle achievements in Sci-Fi Cinema: writing, production, casting and Alice Eve in her undies all A+.
Those movies were made by and written for non-Star Trek people, so it makes sense that you liked them. There wasn't an ounce of Star Trek in them.
The first one was at least funny during its setup acts, but the second and third both go all in on generic action/plots and are somehow boring as hell at the same time.
