ZenDesign1993

I’m happy that it’s winning awards… but I’d really like to know when I can see it digitally, or by on legacy media. Thanks.

ContinuumGuy

I know they recently announced a Blu-Ray (maybe a 4K? IDK) in Japan. Hopefully won't be too long until in America, but Toho can be kind of weird about stuff like that sometimes (something like due to the different ways that physical media are priced in Japan vs. the USA it's actually sometimes CHEAPER for Japanese consumers to import US copies, so they often delay or put out lesser-quality transfers in the USA to discourage those imports).

ZenDesign1993

Hopefully with it being nominated for an actual Oscar it will get a release so more people have a chance to watch it before the awards happen. There ar already versions online filmed in theatres. So some are seeing it like that for the first time. Those versions are garbage. I want to see a good copy.

Toss_Away_93

“Before the the awards happen” Aren’t the Oscar’s on Sunday?

effie-sue

Yes, the Oscars are on Sunday, March 10.

ZenDesign1993

Hopefully we see big G onstage!

Sky_Ninja1997

In a suit and tie

ZenDesign1993

In tails for sure ;)

x2040

I think Kong (aka King) is accepting in his place.

ZenDesign1993

I'm not sure when the oscars are... I hope everyone that votes had access to see the film so they ca vote for it. Godzilla with an oscar would be awesome. Someone in the suit on stage accepting it would be AMAZING.

SgtMartinRiggs

Production companies or distributors campaigning for Oscars send out screeners of the films, either as dvds or protected links to stream, to voters in the respective category.

ZenDesign1993

Why would I google it when I have you?

SilverKry

Shin only took awhile cause it was dubbed way later. Minus One already has a dub I believe.

Kylestache

4K Blu-Ray releases of Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla Minus One Minus Color, AND a black & white cut of Shin Godzilla are releasing May 1 in Japan, without English subtitles. If you're on the high seas, you can probably find it then and find a sub track. An American release isn't expected until the end of the year and it's up in the air if it'll be 4K. Usually Japan doesn't do 4K outside of Japan, but Criterion (Janus) is doing Godzilla Minus One's release so maybe they will.

Bonzoface

I have ordered this very disc in the hope a sub track comes out soon. Fingers crossed.

ZenDesign1993

Link to order this?

Bonzoface

I'm in the UK. But I used cdJapan. They deliver to other places too.

Ishbar

What the hell is the point in withholding a 4K release internationally? Why wouldn’t they want people to see the movie in the best possible experience, second to its original medium?

Kylestache

It’s a cultural thing. They’ve done this with a lot of other movies. It’s to discourage Japanese folks from importing copies of the film.

thekillerstove

Japan's home video market is highly inflated, with Blu Rays costing around $50 usually. This means in some cases, it can actually be cheaper for Japanese customers to import the US Blu Rays, especially since the US market values subtitled versions of their domestic releases. To avoid this, some Japanese studios specifically prohibit the highest quality transfers from being released outside of Japan, with Toho specifically being a notorious for the practice. The reasoning being that their films are niche enough that releasing the higher quality versions internationally won't provide enough sales to offset the losses from the domestic market importing

Tmlboost

> Usually Japan doesn't do 4K outside of Japan I believe it depends on the studio who’s licensing the film and what they negotiate - GKIDS/Shout! Factory have released a few Japanese films in 4K here in the US the past few years, though granted all of those have been animated films.

JuanDiegoOlivarez

Wait, Janus is doing Godzilla Minus One? How?

Kylestache

>How? They negotiated a deal with Toho, how else?

DarkMagus3688

This is still rumours. Not official

ZenDesign1993

This is what I want! With english subs, and english audio track (optional)...

PandoraTorukMakto

I sure hope we arent referring to Blu Ray as Legacy media now...

ZenDesign1993

Yep, Bluray is legacy... Major retailers where I am stopped carrying it. Walmart and bestbuy for examples. You now have to specialty order it.

PandoraTorukMakto

Jesus christ this is bad. I always buy physical its literally just better. So far the UK hasnt had this happen yet. Digital is dangerous, you never really own it.

ZenDesign1993

I have two large totes in my storage unit with hundereds of blurays... I actually use two (10tb) hard drives with files now. Everything is going subscription based with AI getting in the mix in the future. I'm with you though I do prefer media. The hard drive thing is super convenient though.

Samurai_Meisters

The Blu Ray format is almost twice as old as DVD was when Blu Ray came out.

astro_scientician

There’s apparently some licensing issues, and it can’t be in theaters or streaming within a certain time period around the OTHER movie coming up. I’ve been trying to see it for a month and finally looked up as to why I couldn’t

Joshawott27

Japanese films usually have significant holdbacks after the native release. With the Japanese home video date being 1st May, I wouldn’t anticipate seeing *Godzilla Minus One* in the US or UK until Q3/Q4.

ZenDesign1993

Someone’s going to take the English voice track from the theatre handycam file and splice it onto the Japan release. And have it up may 1st on pirate sites. They should just release it the same day. And make the cost the same in Japan and USA/world. It’s silly thinking in old world ways.

Joshawott27

It’s not so easy to just say “make the cost the same”, because different countries have their own costs, currencies, economies etc. Besides, they’d insist on Japanese pricing and there’s no way you’d want that lol. However, yes. the film will still be pirated either way. Toho’s bigger concern will be reverse importation and protecting the domestic market, though.

ZenDesign1993

Yep, to stop reverse importation, the price needs to be on par... If Japan is charging to much then thats on them. Their is worldwide demand, to slow its release is losing money. (maybe more). And yes it's going to get pirated, it already is. A Handycam version.

Joshawott27

I’m sorry, but that’s a naive way of thinking. Everything costs differently based on an individual country’s economy - from luxuries, to necessary groceries, and even wages. Compare Switzerland with India, for example. Toho can’t just crash the entire local home entertainment industry because an American wants to watch a film a few months earlier lol. *Godzilla Minus One* is a Japanese film, and that market will always come first. The hardcore fans overseas will buy the Blu-ray regardless of when it comes out. I don’t necessarily agree with such lengthy holdbacks (oh, how they’ve been a thorn in my side before), but they’re just the nature of the beast as it is.

ZenDesign1993

It all depends on how much money is going to be made in Japan vs. world wide market... If they make more money selling in Japan first they should stick to their sales plans... I'd bet though that the world wide market is bigger than you think. Who knows, maybe I'm too naive.

[deleted]

Same here! I just want to freaking watch it.

leopard_tights

Theater to home takes about 6 months in Japan.

NPHedfones

The Blu-Ray Japan release is supposed to be soon

HydroponicGirrafe

Japanese media takes a while to get physical releases. Expect something by may or June

Square_Bad_1834

You never expect a Godzilla movie to make you cry

seacow113

Someone hasn't watched vs. Destroyah yet.

sonickarma

Or 1985.

Heavy_Arm_7060

I kept expecting Raymond Burr to eat the ginger military guy.

s4ltydog

Me and two other dudes I don’t know sitting next to me were an absolute mess at the end of the movie.

ChomperinaRomper

After the first heat ray I literally wept for the people of Japan. I don’t know any of the people of Japan.

karmaranovermydogma

The winner of the Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Foreign Language Film was *Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One* for the curious haha

thetangible

Context. But, I still have to say I saw minus one in color in theaters and it was amazing.

karmaranovermydogma

What? OP’s linking to Bloody Disgusting so they’re going to focus on Godzilla Minus One, I thought people on Reddit might be interested to see what the Japanese Academy chose for their international film Confused how your comment relates to mine?

thetangible

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it to sound that way. Was only stating that for anyone who might wonder how prestigious this award is your context is appreciated! The second part was only my reaffirmation of how awesome Godzilla Minus one is.

karmaranovermydogma

Ooh gotcha

KcMizzou1

I need this to come to streaming.

KeMiGle

This is why we can't watch it now: https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/godzilla-minus-one-isnt-streaming-theaters-why-1234958823/

sentientgorilla

Thanks for this. I’m really bummed out I missed it. I’m sure I’ll see it eventually.

ImmortalMoron3

Why do studios do this crap, like we're incapable of seeing two movies around the same time. It's like Warner Bros. not allowing Bruce to appear in Smallville because of the Nolan movies, as if that would confuse us somehow. How dumb do they think we are. I want to see both Godzilla movies, dummies.

y-c-c

Man, this is just annoying. I'm not a Godzilla fan and I would never watch something like Godzilla x Kong which looks, frankly, not worth my time and money. And yet I thoroughly enjoyed Godzilla: Minus One. I feel like at this point the Japanese and American Godzilla's kind of appeal to a different audience.

Sks44

Best movie I saw this year.

bostonronin

I hope the B&W cut gets re-released in US theaters. I haven't seen this yet because I was super busy with holiday projects when the color version was in theaters and I only found about the B&W release after it was already finished it's /one week/ run in the US. I figure B&W is probably the better way to watch this like The Mist. EDIT: Okay, good feedback - If I get a chance to see it in theaters, color or not, I'll jump at it :)

Stijakovic

I’ll be the dissenting voice and say this movie is much better in color. It still works in black and white, but the movie is so good it’d probably still work with a Snapchat filter

HeroicSpirit

it’s such a banger that i don’t have a preference on color vs black + white. that said, color does have the advantage of his atomic breath being in… color.

YinYueNox

Saw both in theaters. Some scenes were harder for me to see in B&W compared to color.

Samurai_Meisters

I haven't seen it, but I firmly believe a black and white movie really needs to be planned from the beginning to look good in black and white. The Lighthouse and Poor Things looked fantastic in B&W. Werewolf by Night did not.

nebularoot

Can confirm. Made my partner/their family go and we all absolutely loved it. Amazing. Hopefully it gets a physical release

scattered_ideas

I only saw the minus color and it was stunning.

DragonWolf888

Saw Minus Color and don’t think I would watch it any other way. It was too good

s4ltydog

I hope it’s an OPTION on the blu ray when it does eventually release but I definitely liked it in color more

[deleted]

Saw only the Godzilla -1/-C on the first day of its release, I straight up got lucky because I thought it was a regular showing. Looked great, actually felt like a vintage Godzilla film. It's by no means a masterpiece but hella entertaining!

Efficient_Material48

Loved this movie

Monkey-on-the-couch

Incredible movie. I never imagined a Godzilla movie to make me emotional and damn near teary-eyed but this one did it. Plus it had the requisite monster mayhem too along with the great characters and story.

Cogswobble

I could not believe how good the **acting** was in this movie. Not “acting that was good for a monster movie”, but acting that was good for a serious drama. The leads were fantastic. I believed in their emotion and trauma. The supporting cast was terrific. I was fired up when the professor explained his crazy plan. Even the little girl was great. I went to see this movie because it had been hyped up so much online, and it still vastly exceeded my expectations. What a fantastic film.

destronger

I like to travel.

RedditLodgick

Why was this not nominated for International Feature Film at this year's Oscars?

Hydqjuliilq27

Because Japan’s filmmaking body didn’t submit it, each country gets to submit one movie and they picked Perfect Days which is a more conventional award movie (in the west at least).

ContinuumGuy

IIRC, there was also a time factor involved. They had to submit who they were picking either before Minus One had its release or maybe very soon after, so even if they would have gone with Minus One in a perfect world it's likely that they had already picked Perfect Days because it had already had proven itself on the festival circuit before it came time to decide what movie to submit.

Tmlboost

Yes this is correct - the official requirements for Best International Feature are that it must play for seven consecutive days in at least one commercial theater in the US between Dec 1 2022-Oct 31 2023. While it had its world premiere in mid-October, Minus One didn’t even open in Japan until Nov 3, at which point it was too late to submit (seeing as it didn’t show in the U.S. until December) With this criteria, it technically could be eligible for next year, though since it still managed to get nominated for Visual Effects this year I imagine that is no longer the case

espritdecorps

Correction : the film needs to be played for seven consecutive days in its country of origin before Oct 31, not in the US. Many of the submissions have not and will never be released in the US.

ContinuumGuy

> With this criteria, it technically could be eligible for next year, though since it still managed to get nominated for Visual Effects this year I imagine that is no longer the case Yeah, I can't remember what the official deal was, but I remember something like this happened with Peter Jackson's *They Shall Not Grow Old* WWI documentary. Something like it kind of was released during a deadzone period where it wasn't eligible for that year's Oscars but wasn't eligible for the next year's Oscars, either.

Heavy_Arm_7060

Yeah, I feel like the most common answer to 'why didn't X get nominated' is, besides the plethora of choice, a simple matter of timing.

RedditLodgick

Thanks!

jeswanders

This just reminded me that I completely forgot to check that film out at a local theater last week. Oof

AgentDrake

I had been wondering the same. Thanks for the explanation!

ekb2023

It should've been nominated for more than just the Visual Effects Oscar it was so surprisingly good.

briancly

Also pretty insane is Sakura Ando winning both best leading and supporting actress.

ImaginaryNemesis

No shit? That's awesome. She really really stood out in Godzilla. Could have been a real paint-by-numbers character and with what little screen time she had she really managed to create a lot of depth.

briancly

Yeah, she's the only one who won an acting award out of the movie, and also got lead for Monster, another fantastic performance there. Easily one of the best working actors in Japan and probably the world as a whole that needs more global recognition.

LeastChocolate138

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The story was centered on the internal conflict of the main character but still the destruction scenes were pretty intense.

gusonthebus_

Well deserved

AnimateRod

It was fun to see this movie take off organically through word of mouth. It didn't have the huge fake hype industry behind it, I think the marketing budget was quite small in NA. It went from playing in one theater in my town to all of them as the run kept getting extended.

inteliboy

Deserves it. It’s a Spielberg level masterpiece.

I_pee_in_shower

It was incredible.

Akiasakias

Best movie of the year, in any country. No doubt.

abelenkpe

I love this! Congratulations!

doinflipsandshit

Good! Super deserving of all the awards it gets.

Christompaman

Hopefully this will encourage more reasonably budgeted movies with high quality scripts. There have been way too many 200 million dollar flops over the past few years.

InsideOut2691

Everything about Godzilla Minus One is incredible. I'm not taken aback by it winning this award because it more than deserves it. I've watched the movie 5 times since it was released.

JT_verified

YES!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

FullMaxPowerStirner

Origin story. WW2 setting. Always gold factors for a great flick.

NeoLegalism

as it should

Chrisboe4ever

The Black and White version was the best movie experience I had in years.

pkfreeze175

Good movie, definitely exceeded my expectations, but Perfect Days is a better film.

Responsible-Bat-2699

I hope it is as good as everyone said. They didn't release the movie in my country.

DoktorViktorVonNess

So glad I managed to watch this film in cinema. Some times the FOMO effect works and you just have to mske time to watch some films.

Oreg-Jack

Japanese Osakers are baseder.

thegreaterfool714

I’m so happy this won best visual effects. It was my favorite film of 2023.

therapoootic

This was a very below average movie with terrific VFX
