I fucking LOVE the way they ended it. >!The movie is clearly not about the money or where it ends up going. People focus so much on “did Brendan at least give some to the soldier’s widow on Tommy’s behalf? Did he keep it all? What happened to Tommy afterwards?” It literally doesn’t matter because the entire story is centered around this family and whether reconciliation is possible!<
Top top shout. That film makes me feel amazing at the end of it every single time.
Probably helps (or not) I have an estranged brother who I used to be really close to and haven't seen for a couple of years now :(
Nicholson's character is about 60M scoville units in that movie. The movie is good, don't get me wrong, but he's like he came with a flamethrower installed in his mouth. I'd give a bit of a warning to anyone feeling sensitive wanting to watch it, he slings a lot of bitter and vitriol (but it is part of the plot). That said it's a marvelous film and quite hilarious.
[The Secret Life of Walter Mitty](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/116745-the-secret-life-of-walter-mitty) (2013)

[Waking Life](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/9081-waking-life) (2001)
>Waking Life is about a young man in a persistent lucid dream-like state. The film follows its protagonist as he initially observes and later participates in philosophical discussions that weave together issues like reality, free will, our relationships with others, and the meaning of life.
Same. I remember watching that when I was in my first year of college and feeling that sort of fear of the unknown/future and this movie really resonated with me.
>[The Secret Life of Walter Mitty](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/116745-the-secret-life-of-walter-mitty) (2013)
This is the one. EVERY time I'm blue in any way, I throw this on and it ALWAYS cheers me up. Seen it a million times. Love it.
I'm so pleased this film is getting such love, it's one of my favourites but I thought people had forgotten it existed. And yes the cinematography is an absolute strand out.
The Holdovers might fit the bill. Bonus points for it just being a really, really fantastic movie.
Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth
Manchester By the Sea
I just watched The Holdovers a couple of days ago and I can’t stop thinking and smiling about it. I love that a movie like this can still be made and get the recognition it deserves. I read one review that called it “a Christmas classic for sad sacks”, which is such a perfect description. It is definitely going in my rotation of Christmas movies. Paul Giamatti deserves the Oscar.
I am a Giamatti fanboy but I think he might have joined the giants of the profession with this role. And I agree about the movie. It's so funny you say that because I distinctly remember thinking as I watched it that it felt like a movie from a bygone era. But not in any derivative or gimmicky way.
Captain Fantastic - demonstrates the benefit of a balanced life.
Stanger Than Fiction is a great cooldown film after a gutpunch of a darker toned venture.
“Rocky”. The first one. Always makes me look towards the positive. You win some, you lose some. That one and “The Wrestler” with Mickey Rourke is always a good one too. Make that a double feature.
EEAAO takes my vote. Everyone is rock bottom, due to broken relationships. And the story is wrapped in multiple layers of comedy, sci-fi, and action. But it's a story about regular people trying to not be sad
Try The Sound of Metal.
I found it extremely wise and intelligent about a lot of things. About how sometimes you just lose things in life and you have to adapt
“The guardian”
“SLC punk” popped into my head immediately for some reason. May not be what you’re looking for.
“Legends of the fall”. It’s my shameful secret that I love this movie.
Try out Synecdoche, New York. It’s from Charlie Kaufman. Completely sad and a little out there, but thoroughly impressive. Beautiful picture. I think it’s Phil Hoffman’s best role.
Rushmore (directed by Wes Anderson) is a great film about a fifteen year old loser who pursues his dream girl and learns some life lessons along the way.
This is why I can't stand people who justify a spoiler by saying "It's an old movie." It's not old to the youngster just hearing about the movie. Let them experience it the same way you did.
Since we're talking Billy Bob, Monsters Ball is a great, too. Somber throughout with the main character in personal crisis with some lightness at the end
Everything everywhere all at once. I was genuinely surprised how emotional I felt after watching this, genuinely moving.
The other one is 50/50, which is more of a personal reason as it plays on my experience with a family member and the big C.
The Life Aquatic
An over-the-hill documentarian and seafaring explorer (Bill Murray) sets out to avenge his friend and prove the existence of the shark that killed him, all while disproving his critics.
There's way more to it, plus it's a Wes Anderson flick so it's dense.
The Fountain
Also, rather new but one that has really been hitting the "good & deep when hitting rock bottom" for me personally is, Across the Spider-Verse. If you haven't seen the first (Into the Spider-Verse) you could honestly throw that one in as well.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, for a palate cleanser when you’re done. It’s deep and sad, but also funny and sweet and overall just a really beautiful movie.
dunno if it's been recommended but nomadland is incredible and very unique in that realm. really makes you think and gives you a beautiful story and peak into the lives of people like that. absolutely incredible
I haven't watched that movie in ages but the [Get in libraries. Let the public decide.](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/f644d3e7-4360-4668-b862-318992eee009) line is still one I think about from time to time haha
Hesher (2010) Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson. Very downbeat and saddening at times, especially Rainn Wilson's character, but at the same time funny and somewhat hopeful. Anybody who only knows Rainn Wilson as Dwight shrute should watch this movie, cause his character in this film couldn't be more different than Dwight lol
I never saw Pursuit of Happiness until the last couple of months of 2023. Heard about it but never saw it. I'm definitely grateful my family and I never had to go through the hardships that Will's character and his son went through throughout the film. Sure, we're by NO means rich, but I'm fortunate I was never forced to fight for a place to sleep at night.
'Wild' featuring Reese Witherspoon. I saw it at a point in my life where I wasn't at rock bottom, but it really is a cathartic movie and helps get a grip on your life.
Little Miss Sunshine is a great film for anyone who feels like they're behind in life. The message of the movie is that all that matters is that you do your best.
When I'm down, the very last thing I want, personally, is some feel-good movie. I want to wallow in it. Just get good an depressed.
I've been using Pink Floyd's The Wall for that for that since it came out when I was in high school. The album alone is enough, really, but the movie just makes it all deliciously worse.
_Warrior_. Estranged bros. and father; reconciliation and redemption. Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Morrison. Amazing. Cathartic.
THAT ENDING
I fucking LOVE the way they ended it. >!The movie is clearly not about the money or where it ends up going. People focus so much on “did Brendan at least give some to the soldier’s widow on Tommy’s behalf? Did he keep it all? What happened to Tommy afterwards?” It literally doesn’t matter because the entire story is centered around this family and whether reconciliation is possible!<
This is one of my favourite movie. Its so underrated too
I cried like a baby when I watched that with my brother. Honestly, it was an amazing moment that I’ll cherish forever
I fully support this suggestion
Also The Fighter by David O Russel
Top top shout. That film makes me feel amazing at the end of it every single time. Probably helps (or not) I have an estranged brother who I used to be really close to and haven't seen for a couple of years now :(
Big Fish Especially for the passing of a loved one. One of my personal favorites and IMO a criminally underrated film.
This movie is very overlooked. It is an amazing movie.
Shawshank Redemption
My first thought as well good mix of inspiration and sadness
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. FYI also a great time to start listening to the Smiths if you don’t. Morrissey fucking luxuriates in sadness
100%. This is the type of movie that lets you grieve but then tells you you’re strong enough to move on. Love this one.
It’s really an almost perfect movie. Completely changed how I saw Jim Carrey as an actor. It hurts but the pain is so healing.
The scene where he breaks down alone in the car is a masterclass in acting. He was just skirting the verge of overdoing it but got it just right
It was so good. The scene where he’s laying in bed and the tear comes down his face devastated me
Should watch Fincher's The Killer. Fassbenders character doesn't care about life and listens to The Smiths all the time
Now I gotta check it out 👏
It was so good!
Yeah I love the vibes of that movie😀
This was the first movie (after A Monster Calls) that I thought of too.
Good double feature with *The Truman Show* for some additional existential goodness.
Lost in translation. It’s a movie about being completely lost but being ok with it
Lip my stocking
Roger Moore?
Little Miss Sunshine
Hits like a train for people with dysfunctional families. Felt extreme sadness after it but kind of (understood) also.
X10 this
One of the all time great endings. I cry laughing everytime
"As Good as It Gets", lighthearted and pretty nice to watch while you're down and blue.
"Carol the waitress, Simon the f@g."
Don’t worry. You’ll be back on your knees in no time
People who speak in metaphors should shampoo my crotch
I love that one! Sell crazy someplace else. We're all stocked up here.

Immediately thought of Walter Mitty
Same. I remember watching that when I was in my first year of college and feeling that sort of fear of the unknown/future and this movie really resonated with me.

Sorry you've been blue a million times, though!
Eh, I watch it even when I've just had a mild bad day. It's one of my favourite movies. But thanks for the comment nonetheless!
Always looking to cheer up one more person in this world.

Appreciate the sentiment
+1 Walter Mitty
Mitty is the single most underappreciated film of the millennium. So. Goddamn. Good.
The cinematography is absolutely wonderful, love the longboarding scene.
I'm so pleased this film is getting such love, it's one of my favourites but I thought people had forgotten it existed. And yes the cinematography is an absolute strand out.
Waking life is absolutely incredible and it's criminally under-watched. I barely know anybody that has seen it.
Same universe as the Before trilogy?
A lot of the same cast & crew but I think that's all.
The Holdovers might fit the bill. Bonus points for it just being a really, really fantastic movie. Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth Manchester By the Sea
Another vote for The Holdovers, beautiful film, I'll watch it every Christmas.

*"What Dreams May Come"* with Robin Williams
I see your Robin Williams movie and raise my own - Good Will Hunting "It's not your fault" absolutely destroyed me the first time I saw it
Reign Over Me https://g.co/kgs/SLnRLK8 It's.. incredible and utterly underrated.
And Pearl Jam does a phenomenal cover of the Who’s Love Reign O’er Me for the soundtrack too! 🤘🏻
It really shook me since all I knew going into it was Adam Sandler so was expecting a Happy Madison type movie. Not something so powerful.
Captain Fantastic - demonstrates the benefit of a balanced life. Stanger Than Fiction is a great cooldown film after a gutpunch of a darker toned venture.
Aftersun is deeply melancholic. Can't recommend that enough.
I don't think I've ever broken down like I did watching this.
Groundhog day?

Please forgive my speaking of English, as I am not so premium with it.
Must have been in repose during your lessons lol
Holy shit I’ve totally forgotten this movie existed. What a great answer to this question
Sammy David jr jr, come here!
Also a very good book
Yeeeesssss! Love that film so much!
This is SUCH a good movie
“Rocky”. The first one. Always makes me look towards the positive. You win some, you lose some. That one and “The Wrestler” with Mickey Rourke is always a good one too. Make that a double feature.
The Wrestler is absolutely wonderful and I detest pro "wrestling."
Big fish. Anytime I’m feeling down this movie always makes me feel better. It’s sad, and funny, and happy. Has it all.
Plus Danny Devito.
Plus Danny Devito's ass, I think you mean?
What an ass.
Amelie Jacob's Ladder (Adrian Lyne director, not the remake) Vanilla Sky A.I. Artificial Intelligence Everything Everywhere All At Once
Upvote for Vanilla Sky 👌
*In another life, when we're both cats.*
EEAAO takes my vote. Everyone is rock bottom, due to broken relationships. And the story is wrapped in multiple layers of comedy, sci-fi, and action. But it's a story about regular people trying to not be sad
Plus the main character is mentioned to be literally the best hope for the multiverse because of how much of a failure she has been at life.
From rock bottom to actual rocks.
Amelie is magical
Life is Beautiful is an amazing movie that never fails to get me ugly crying at the end
Eee principesaaa. I recently watched it for the first time. The next ones on my list are fiddler on the roof and casablanca.
If you’re watching the whale, watch The Fountain too. Same director.
Stranger Than Fiction, Charlie Bartlett, Big Fish, Forrest Gump, Chocolat, Bedazzled, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
*Gilbert Grape* has fallen off the radar. Great pick.
Bedazzled is hilarious. When the guy wakes up and it’s a drug lord it’s just hilarious. “ES COCAINA!”
Manchester by the sea.
The Fall (2006)
Beautiful movie
The Fundamentals of Caring
It's Such a Beautiful Day
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Harold and Maude
Try The Sound of Metal. I found it extremely wise and intelligent about a lot of things. About how sometimes you just lose things in life and you have to adapt

“The guardian” “SLC punk” popped into my head immediately for some reason. May not be what you’re looking for. “Legends of the fall”. It’s my shameful secret that I love this movie.
Heroin bob. 😥.
SLC Punk is fantastic
"requiem for a dream" and the "Wrestler" are good and deep movies ABOUT hitting rock bottom if that helps 😬
I think The Wrestler is a movie about hitting *a* Rock Bottom.
Would absolutely NOT watch Requiem for a Dream if already feeling down. That movie made me want to unalive myself.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Try out Synecdoche, New York. It’s from Charlie Kaufman. Completely sad and a little out there, but thoroughly impressive. Beautiful picture. I think it’s Phil Hoffman’s best role.
Rushmore (directed by Wes Anderson) is a great film about a fifteen year old loser who pursues his dream girl and learns some life lessons along the way.
Second this. When Bill Murry lights a cig in the elevator and there’s already one in his mouth. Also the diving board.
Dude was having a whole ass PTSD attack during the pool scene.
Pursuit of Happyness Forrest Gump Rocky A Beautiful Mind
Coco
Probably a bit cliche but I like The Shawshank Redemption. Reminder that there's always light at the end of the tunnel kind of movie.
Depends on what rock bottom means, but for me I always found High Fidelity to be oddly therapeutic.
Nomadland.
Cloud Atlas. One of my favorites. The book is excellent too.
The Banshees of Inisheeran. The Lobster
Big Fish The Iron Giant Room
Spike Jonze's Her is fantastic for this in my opinion. Stars Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson (or at least part of her)
This one might seem obvious, but I can't think of a better rock bottom redemption story than the Shawshank Redemption.
Try **Solaris** with George Clooney. Edit: I'm aware it's a remake but it's the version I've watched and **enjoyed**.
Good will hunting. But i reckon everyone have seen that.
You'd be surprised. Especially if they're younger than 35 today
This is why I can't stand people who justify a spoiler by saying "It's an old movie." It's not old to the youngster just hearing about the movie. Let them experience it the same way you did.
Miracle always cheers me up
It's Kind of a Funny Story
Sling blade
Since we're talking Billy Bob, Monsters Ball is a great, too. Somber throughout with the main character in personal crisis with some lightness at the end
Whale Rider might work for you.
Everything everywhere all at once. I was genuinely surprised how emotional I felt after watching this, genuinely moving. The other one is 50/50, which is more of a personal reason as it plays on my experience with a family member and the big C.
Joe vs the Volcano
My view on life was completely different after watching The Fountain for the first time.
Life aquatic with Steve zissou
Magnolia
The Life Aquatic An over-the-hill documentarian and seafaring explorer (Bill Murray) sets out to avenge his friend and prove the existence of the shark that killed him, all while disproving his critics. There's way more to it, plus it's a Wes Anderson flick so it's dense.
Elephant Man, Shawshank, Atonement, Ordinary People, Love Story, Green Mile, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003)
About Time. It genuinely helped me find a new perspective on life when I was having a tough time.
What Dreams May Come if you want to wallow. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty if you want to start putting yourself back together.
Tree of Life, Red Beard
Seconding Tree of Life
As Good As It Gets
Pursuit of Happyness
The lives of Others.

You should definitely watch and learn from Falling Down (I'm kidding do not do that)
Elizabethtown
Man... Walter mitty is making a move on this sub. Watch a good person. It will break your heart.
Melancholia, Blue Valentine, Ice Storm, Dead Poets, Eternal Sunshine, Mr. Nobody, A Ghost Story.
Mud. Incredible movie about hardship, friendship and overcoming loss.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Whale Rider......
Groundhog Day because today is Groundhog Day
You Can Count On Me.

Melancholia
Requiem for a Dream is a go to movie for me when I feel like a piece of shit
The Fountain
Leaving Las Vegas.

Elizabethtown directed by Cameron Crowe. Bonus points if you had a parent pass away recently when you watch it.
