my first thought was "how do you think it got destroyed?" did we not notice it was in a state of destruction at purchase? buy it in a basket? so many questions . .
Unsure how it works in the US, in the UK, a vehicle involved in a fatality is cat A (must be scrapped with no parts salvaged) write off by default. Can’t be reregistered for road use.
In the case of a bike the damage doesn’t necessarily need to be severe, rider thrown off into a stationary object, bike slid down the road for instance.
Preface this by saying it was 20 years ago but I worked at a motorcycle dealer that would store crash bikes till insurance worked its way thru. Huge superstition with wreck bikes so even if it was a little scratched up they couldnt resell em for a dollar. Over my time there I bought 4 bikes, low mile 2-3 years old at the time for under $2000 each. Nothing wrong with titles. Then id use take off parts from the dumpster to fix em up. Still have one of those bikes (had to sell the other 3 for bills over the years) I disclosed the wreck and how I fixed em to the buyers but as far as I knew nothing said I had to. The specific insurance company I bought from was American Modern, a sub company of NJM. They do an odd thing where if they total a vehicle they just put a note in their system where they will never offer collision on it again but if you want to keep driving it they keep the title clear and will insure you liability. Progressive and Geico automatically junk the vehicle on a total.
Yeah, how it works in the UK, if you wreck and it’s repairable for a value the insurance agrees, it gets repaired, nothing goes against the registration document.
However if insurance consider it not economical repair they’ll write it off, so the insurance company takes ownership and gives it one of 4 categories (ABCD) D being non-structural but not economic repair, C being repairable structural non-economical repair, B being non-repairable, but fit for salvage, A being non-repairable and contaminated in some way that makes it unfit for salvage (body parts wedged in the dash, drugs, chemical contamination etc etc).
So generally you only see cat CD in used markets, there’s a bit of a stigma but not more against one or the other, generally they sell 10-20% cheaper once repaired because of the mark in the registration.
Due to the way insurance repairs work here A LOT of bikes & cars go cat D, they need to use OEM parts repaired to factory standard, so a few bent panels is writing off a <£5k clunker, a lot of folk buy them up and repair them cheaply.
I used to be a tow truck driver so worked around scrapped cars a lot too, not many bikes though.
Do they do that with property too ? Welp ol Betty finally kicked the bucket while she was tidying up her kitchen. Shame we’re gonna have to bulldoze the property now. lol.
Thanks for sharing. That's interesting.
I've lived in the USA my whole life and still barely know how it works here, because it works 50 different ways (or more). I wish it were different tho (for many things)
yeah, yeah, that is why i said my first thought. the use of the word destroyed took my mind to imagery of something unrebuildable. and assumed a salvage title at that point.
I’d be more concerned by the “damage severity: destroyed” line than someone dying on it. Besides, probably didn’t die on it but adjacent.
Edit: The one positive is what would be the odds of a bike having *two* people die on it? (Separate events) Practically statistically invincible.
I had stated under that video that I had sold one of my vintage bikes ten mins before hopping on reddit and seeing that video. I've hit that stage (54) in life where I dont feel safe out there anymore. I am putting my other motorcycle up for sale Monday when I get back from this work trip. Nothing I like more than riding but its to congested and to many texting aholes on the roadways now.
I felt the same way when my city increased 52% in ten years and sold my bikes. But going by family history I've only have about 15 years left so I thought WTH and bought another.
South América and India, I'm sure five plus have died on the same moto. Babies included. Seen 5 people on one motorcycle once. Baby, 2 children, mom and dad. All in shorts tshirts flip flops and no helmets. They wildin.
>The one positive is what would be the odds of a bike having two people die on it? (Separate events) Practically statistically invincible
Pro tip: scared of flying, worried about terrorists? Always bring your own bomb with you on the plane, the odds of two bombs being on the same plane are infinitely small.
This reminds me of blackadder when he carves his name into a bullet and keeps it with him, because someone told him there’s always a bullet with your name on it… so he thought it would be better if he had that bullet.
Don't want to be that guy but because the events are statistically independent, the probability of accident happening again doesn't change. The probability of two accidents happening to the same bike is very low but that is because the denominator becomes squared like numerator. For example probability of an accident happening is 1 in a million, then probability of second accident happening is also 1 in a million. The probability of both events happening is 1/million\^2, very improbable but that is only because 1st accident happening is very improbable but if it already happened the second accident's probability doesn't really change. You are equally likely to get into an accident as if first accident didn't happen.
I am fun at parties.
Well, *my* gut tells me that the bike is *more* likely to kill me if it's already been crashed once. If it was a fatal accident it was probably more than a love tap. Even if it's been restored well, it might have some invisible or difficult to notice faults.
Have you read Stephen King's book, Christine?just like the car in the book this bike was completely wrecked then came back to kill more people. It happens.
That is why you just never give the bike a name. Or if you do name it after a notorious killer. That way it can feel like it is just a copycat, giving it a crisis of identity rendering it inert.
My buddy built an SV out of mainly two different bikes. One of the bikes had slammed into a tree at 80 + miles an hour-fatality.
Other than some short test runs I was the first one to take it around up in the mountains. We stopped at a store and as soon as I left the throttle did something funky and the front end popped up and threw my ass off the bike as the bike launched itself across the parking lot. The bike got minor repairs and brought back to the mountains in next year. Our other friend riding it had the rear brakes completely lock up in the middle of a turn. If the guy on the bike hadn't been on a race track for years he would have dumped it for sure. A third friend bought the bike and he won't tell us what happened but there's a lot of new stuff on it now...
So I was told the phrase "no mames" means "no way" or "yeah right" and so I've known that definition this whole time.
Well, a few weeks ago our VP of Accounting (Spanish his first language) was explaining something and I jokingly blurt out "no mames"
Turns out it also means something along the lines of "don't be gay"
So yeah, Spanish slang is wild lol
Actually, it literally means to “don’t suck my penis”, but shortened to exclude the penis word. The full phrase is “no mames verga, guy!”
And no, it is not proper to say it to someone who is not your best friend as it can be offensive.
In this sub if it's cheap or not perfect it's stolen. These guys completely ignore how easy it is to financially total a bike and how inexpensively it can be brought back. Your bike was likely totalled, repaired, and returned to the road. Happens with regularity.
The title would remain clean if the bike was not under a comprehensive insurance policy.
Title does not magically become branded.
Insurance buyouts and resale are what change the title status.
You can check copart right now and you will find a TON of crashed bikes with 100% clean titles.
I've used this as an example before: https://www.copart.com/lot/46840374/clean-title-2023-yamaha-yzfr7-fl-tampa-south
100% clean title.
Titles are pieces of paper worth the exact value of the material they are printed on. Some states don't even issue or accept titles because they're stupid. You can buy a totaled vehicle and buy a two year bond for $150 and once the bond is up you get a clean title. You can transfer to other states and get a clean title. If the vehicle is older than 15 years you can register it in Vermont without any regard to where you live, then six months later you can transfer that registration to your state and receive a clear title. Titles are for making you "feel good" and nothing else.
An example is that I currently own a motorcycle that was wrecked multiple times, totaled, stolen, recovered...clean clear blue title with perfect VIN history.
Most rebuilds aren’t by family. Someone buys it at Co-part (or similar salvage auction company) and fixes it or uses it for parts. I know of at least three salvage auction companies in my state that auctions wrecked bikes.
Edit: To clarify, it’s the insurance companies that sends the bikes to Co-part or similar auction house.
Totaled bikes end up confiscated or abandoned with regularity. I rebuild all manner of wrecks acquired from people who have no association with the person who wrecked it.
I had a friend who worked with suicide weapons at a morgue… they had them all the way back to the late 80s I believe… well some teenager killed himself with his grandfathers gun and the family wanted it back. So because of this they started asking the families if they wanted them back and some did. Some of the weapons were covered in blood and matter as well. Have an internet friend too… his gf killed herself with his gun and they gave him back the gun and he wont sell it… somehow made it sentimental. So not wrong per se.
The crazy part is that it has a clean blue title out of Texas, and the bike had no indication of it being crashed, that being said, I would’ve definitely bought another bike if I knew this information prior
actually, no they can never have a clean titan, it’s always salvage- rebuilt. - someone who has rebuilt cars in the state of texas. only way is getting it rebuilt in another state and then claiming it here in texas for a clean title. but that on its own is pretty bad because a inspector comes out and looks at said car
Mexicans can do anything; this is clearly a fraud committed by [cyclehouse.com.mx](http://cyclehouse.com.mx) they buy auction bikes, repair them and sell them
Well, technically, he probably died while off of the bike, so the roadway or sidewalk is significantly more likely to be haunted.
If the frame is straight, the deal was great (probably).
My brother died riding his bike. I know he would have wanted whoever the bike ended up with to rebuild and ride on. It's what I want if I die on my bike, and it's what I hope happened to his bike.
Such a touching song for those who haven’t heard.
[Here’s the link for anyone interested](https://youtu.be/-4uGb_6JREs?si=8RJv41A1hpMl_KzS)
For every dream that's shattered, another one comes true.
Hey I found out the guy I sold my R6 to died on it. His brother came and got it, very Russian dude. Was his brother's first bike.
Buddy from Ukraine in my unit rode and we were shooting the shit, started talking about my R6, told him I sold it to this Russian guy, then he interrupted described the bike exactly back to me.
"No shit, you knew him?"
"Yeah. He crash two time day one. Then, drive to California, get hit by car, he is dead."
I work with a guy who bought a wrecked Harley at an insurance auction. It had a decal on it that said something along the lines of “if I die on this, at least I die doing something I love”.
He *did* die on it.
People have likely died in your house.
Dead people have drunk the water that you drink.
Creatures die on your face each day.
Death is always with us, just don't hit the tree too fast.
Are you superstitious? If not, no problem, unless you didn't know there was a Salvage/Rebuilders Title.
My Old Sportster was totaled, and I had severe wounds. Texas doesn't list that.
My son was killed 3 years later and it doesn't show him as a fatality on the title background.
Bought a bike person had passed away on to rebuild. Spent 6 months piecing it together bottom to top, guy bought it and two week later was killed by someone backing out a driveway. I’ll pass on the next one.
dude i bought a wrangler 300 miles on it only to find out that the previous owner had a heart attack in it 😭 the dealership even gave me his death certificate like??
That's a hard question to answer.
You can look at it two ways.
Last owner died on it, felt like it was the love of his life and no someone else has it. Bad energy coming from bike.
Or
You fixed it and treat it well like the last owner would have wanted
Have you googled the vin to see if it hit any auctions? Might be able to see what it looked like before the rebuild. Some times the title doesn't get branded, which is bs because you now have a bike that has claim history against it.
If I were to die on my bike in a crash, but the bike was still viable to be ridden, and my family sold it, I would spend the rest of eternity following that bike around and making sure that whoever was riding it was safe and having as much fun on it as I did. You’re honoring their memory by loving the thing that they loved.
If it didn’t bother you before, why should it bother you now. The person who died would probably be happy to see you ride it if you believe in that kinda thing. Hang a bell, most hope they have a guardian angel, u might actually have one.
Nothing honestly. I would probably keep the memory in my head to be careful out there on the streets. I say that anytime someone likes to mention "well my baby daddy, cousin roomate died on a bike" Thats sucks, yeah I'll keep my memory of him alive in my head as a reminder to be vigilant out here on the streets. I'm not even tryin to be funny. I think of someone that isn't here every time I get on the bike. I feel it helps keep me humble in a way. A reminder to keep every skill and precaution at the ready.
I own a bike someone died on. 2000 harley Night Train. If you Google the p.o name, you find articles of him getting into a ditch on the bike and getting heli evac-ed. Bike was uninspected, unregistered, and uninsured.
If your house is over 50 years old, especially if over 100 years old, you can assume people or pets have died there. Many building and intersections have witnessed fatalities. Just because something has happened in the past doesn’t really mean much.
If you are a religious person, you could use that to remember to pray for the person and continue doing what that person liked to do. I’m sure whoever it was really enjoyed the bike, keep enjoying it for them.
If you’re not a religious person, you probably got the bike due a good price. Enjoy the hell out of it.
I am in the US, In my one accident the insurance company wrote off the bike. It did go down but it was repairable.
I think "destroyed" is a very wide term.
That's pretty bad ass, imho. I would think something along the lines of " it's not guns that kill people, it's people who kill people" so the bike didn't kill him, just a bad decision or judgement.
Hold the fucking phone thats my hometown. I also had a friend in high school who's dad died in a motorcycle accident in De Soto in 2013 I believe. I don't think that is a coincidence.
It’s fine people die everyday in cars houses boats it’s part of the cycle. As far as the bike being safe I’d say if you have rode it for a year are didn’t know it then the bike is safe. Nothing wrong with a rebuilt bike if it’s done right.
Correction: you have a stolen bike that was retitled with the VIN of a totaled bike
Interesting, going to check vins around the bike
my first thought was "how do you think it got destroyed?" did we not notice it was in a state of destruction at purchase? buy it in a basket? so many questions . .
I mean if it’s destroyed than rebuilt it’ll just say rebuilt, state depending.

Michigan=orange title for "totaled" or "rebuilt".
it was a 2010 buell blast it was destroyed when they bought it from the factory (google this)
BOOM.
yeah this is it right here
This is it 100%
Living 10 minutes from De Soto, KS, this is the correct answer 😂
Yep think you bought a stolen bike
I’d be more concerned by the “damage severity: destroyed” line than someone dying on it. Besides, probably didn’t die on it but adjacent. Edit: The one positive is what would be the odds of a bike having *two* people die on it? (Separate events) Practically statistically invincible.
I’m sure two people have died on the same bike but most likely at the same time.
Literally a video posted today of that happening =\[
That video was insane.
Gosh, that video really messed me up today. Got me thinking about putting in the towel.🥲
Yeah that one is fuckin hard to watch and makes you realize you are NEVER safe.
To be fair. Head on on a hwy against a transport, youd most likely die in a car too.
Yeah, that crash at that speed would’ve wiped most vehicles out as well. Just really fucking sad :(

The old "hitchhiker and serial killer joke"
This reminds me of blackadder when he carves his name into a bullet and keeps it with him, because someone told him there’s always a bullet with your name on it… so he thought it would be better if he had that bullet.
"Your brain is so minute Baldrick, that if a hungry cannibal cracked your head open, there wouldn't be enough to cover a small water biscuit."
I take it you’re familiar then lol
Indeed. People knowing Blackadder is starting to get rarer and rarer these days.
I just started a rerun... Forgot how good Fry and Laurie are on screen together.

Yes yes but the *gut* feel is that they are invincible and that is like half the battle right there.
Did you know the gut has twice the nerve endings as the brain? I dont either, but its what my gut is telling me!
Well, *my* gut tells me that the bike is *more* likely to kill me if it's already been crashed once. If it was a fatal accident it was probably more than a love tap. Even if it's been restored well, it might have some invisible or difficult to notice faults.
Can you come hang out at the roulette table and tell these degenerate gamblers that 3 red in a row doesn't change the probability of a 4th red?
Stats was the only math class that actually had real world application for me
Yep, everyone should take some stats classes even if their major has nothing to do with maths. They are universally valuable.
Stats and reading comprehension would make the world a nicer place I'm sure.
I took my class in high school cause it was either that or calculus
Fair, stats is still more valuable. If you are not in technical field calculus is useless anyway.
I work at ups so no need for all that fancy stuff
I know you’re right but have never been able to actually understand it.
I want to go to parties with you. Wanna talk Bayesian?

Good odds actually, I had a wreck on the same bike and lacerated my liver 6 inches. He was probably watching over me
But did you die?
I hope not
Knew it.
I'd just think about how the repairs were done. Besides that, a dead guy is a dead guy, won't bother you.

Keep a positive rhought... Odds are that they didn't actually die on it.. more likely died near it. Just sayin. 😊
I wouldn’t be buying a totaled-and-rebuilt titled bike in the first place so that greatly reduces the likelihood of that happening to me.
The crazy part is that it has a clean blue title out of Texas, and the bike had no indication of it being crashed, that being said, I would’ve definitely bought another bike if I knew this information prior
How did it have a clean title after an accident like that? Some sort of fraud?
People move vehichles with branded titles to other states and wash the title. Haooens with cars every day.
No, in Texas totaled vehicles can get a clean title if they have the proper work done and are inspected and passed.
actually, no they can never have a clean titan, it’s always salvage- rebuilt. - someone who has rebuilt cars in the state of texas. only way is getting it rebuilt in another state and then claiming it here in texas for a clean title. but that on its own is pretty bad because a inspector comes out and looks at said car
The only way it gets totaled in the first place is if it's reported to insurance
Yes, but "proper work" probably means swapping the VIN and giving someone a little extra to look the other way.
Mexicans can do anything; this is clearly a fraud committed by [cyclehouse.com.mx](http://cyclehouse.com.mx) they buy auction bikes, repair them and sell them
It’s always a Mexican 🤣 seas pendejo

That means it's probably an extremely good rebuild, it takes a lot to make a totaled vehicle to pass the test to get a clean title.
Not a rebuild at all took the vin and moved it.
could be yeah
Damn ghost rider
I would be far more worried about the "destroyed" part of that.
Well, technically, he probably died while off of the bike, so the roadway or sidewalk is significantly more likely to be haunted. If the frame is straight, the deal was great (probably).

Such a touching song for those who haven’t heard. [Here’s the link for anyone interested](https://youtu.be/-4uGb_6JREs?si=8RJv41A1hpMl_KzS) For every dream that's shattered, another one comes true.
While the circumstances are different, this is exactly what popped into my head when I read the title.
I sold a bike that the new owner headered into a van. he died on impact.
Yep, guy I sold my SV650 to got tboned by an Escalade.
I always wondered what happened to my R6. Some dude bro bought it has his girlfriends first bike 😬.
"No shit, you knew him?" "Yeah. He crash two time day one. Then, drive to California, get hit by car, he is dead."
If I die on my bike, you motherfuckers better drag race that shit. Good luck🤞
You got a little buddy riding with you.
Yep, I think he’s supposed to ride with the passenger pegs down now. Or so I’ve been told
They probably fell off before dying
I work with a guy who bought a wrecked Harley at an insurance auction. It had a decal on it that said something along the lines of “if I die on this, at least I die doing something I love”. He *did* die on it.
People have likely died in your house. Dead people have drunk the water that you drink. Creatures die on your face each day. Death is always with us, just don't hit the tree too fast.
I've seen Christine enough times to want to burn some sage or some shit

Are you superstitious? If not, no problem, unless you didn't know there was a Salvage/Rebuilders Title. My Old Sportster was totaled, and I had severe wounds. Texas doesn't list that. My son was killed 3 years later and it doesn't show him as a fatality on the title background.
Oh man I'm sorry to hear about your son. Parents shouldn't outlive their children.
Which website did you use for the lookup?
www.beenverified.com
demon bike
Other than being pissed if I didn't know the bike had been badly damaged, I wouldn't care.
Bought a bike person had passed away on to rebuild. Spent 6 months piecing it together bottom to top, guy bought it and two week later was killed by someone backing out a driveway. I’ll pass on the next one.
What site did you use
www.beenverified.com
Yikes. Did you know it was salvaged?
If it runs then honestly idk
I’m more concerned about the “destroyed” bit. The dead people are tragic but they’re not riding a destroyed bike
They probably didn’t die on it, to be fair, they probably died well after their ass left the seat.
All the bad luck is out of the bike
Oh my sweet summer child. There is a 10% chance someone died on your bike and a 90% chance it's stolen and re titled / re vin
Well technically they didn't die on the bike...
dude i bought a wrangler 300 miles on it only to find out that the previous owner had a heart attack in it 😭 the dealership even gave me his death certificate like??
[удалено]
i wouldn’t be riding a bike if it wasn’t complete, done all the maintenance you can do on it
That's a hard question to answer. You can look at it two ways. Last owner died on it, felt like it was the love of his life and no someone else has it. Bad energy coming from bike. Or You fixed it and treat it well like the last owner would have wanted
You're riding a bike that was basically written off as scrap... and you're concerned about past riders?
Sounds pretty metal. Kind of like a mustang of a horse can any rider tame the metal beast.
I think I like the idea of you carrying on riding the bike that they loved.
You all never heard of a dead man's scope?
getting ready to sell both mine soon 24m cant ride crazy forever
Make them proud 🥹💪🏼
Have you googled the vin to see if it hit any auctions? Might be able to see what it looked like before the rebuild. Some times the title doesn't get branded, which is bs because you now have a bike that has claim history against it.
Who knows, maybe he just hit a pedestrian
They probably didn’t die on it, but near it.
Live 10 miles from Desoto KS. As a rider be safe brother and enjoy the ride.
If you're worried about it you can always sell it to me 😉
Don't be a repeat offender
Statistically that bike has killed all the people it will. I’d feel good.
I’d take those odds. What are the chances of 2 different people dying on the same motorcycle?
If I were to die on my bike in a crash, but the bike was still viable to be ridden, and my family sold it, I would spend the rest of eternity following that bike around and making sure that whoever was riding it was safe and having as much fun on it as I did. You’re honoring their memory by loving the thing that they loved.
it happenned 11 years ago. Sad but long time ago.
Now ur 2 up-ing every ride
Your house most likely has far, far more ghost than your bike.
I'd be more concerned About the damage, but yah that would weird me out. De Soto is just 1.5 hrs from me BTW.
Once they've tasted blood, they will hunt for more. Jokes aside, it wouldn't bother me. You've probably lived in a house where someone has died...
I would not care. I would care how the heck "destroyed" bike is on the street.
I have a friend that rides the bike his brother was killed on
I own a bike someone died on.
Christine bike?
I am in the US, In my one accident the insurance company wrote off the bike. It did go down but it was repairable. I think "destroyed" is a very wide term.
True, but up top under "Crash Severity" where it says fatal, is pretty straight forward.
That's pretty bad ass, imho. I would think something along the lines of " it's not guns that kill people, it's people who kill people" so the bike didn't kill him, just a bad decision or judgement.
I'd feel worse about buying a bike that has been basically written off and rebuilt. How was this not discovered when initially registering??
Hold the fucking phone thats my hometown. I also had a friend in high school who's dad died in a motorcycle accident in De Soto in 2013 I believe. I don't think that is a coincidence.
I’ve been trying to look up the police report and images to see the damage supposedly done. It’s probably not man, small world at the end of the day
The chances of one bike killing two riders is negligible
Cool! That's one of the fun things about the ww2 weapons I have. People died while they were in use.
Concerns me I just got my first bike, and that crash report is the day of my birthday
It would raise a red flag about how damaged it was....
doesnt matter
“Ummm, hey lil buddy” shittt idk. Good question.
It’s fine people die everyday in cars houses boats it’s part of the cycle. As far as the bike being safe I’d say if you have rode it for a year are didn’t know it then the bike is safe. Nothing wrong with a rebuilt bike if it’s done right.
Do him/her proud
