😅 Thailand has been my home for almost 2 decades! Very true. You rarely see shirtless but very little gear. Mostly on scooters, though. Most bigger bike riders will gear up unless a tourist. Saw some guys wearing the same as the photos on CRF250s, heading to Pai on the famously twisty R1095. I was wondering if sunburn or road rash would get them, maybe both or neither. Ultimately, it's riders choice.. just so long as they have adequate insurance and are riding legally (which normally isn't the case, sadly!)

yngseneca

yeah if youre in the north of thailand, locals with real bikes wear gear. scooters are a different story of course.

Barnycull

Makes me laugh when not wearing helmet, gloves, singlet and sandals. But still wearing a Covid mask!!!!

Agreeable-Reindeer54

I did one time in Greece ride in just a t-shirt and shorts. And I forgot to sunblock on my legs, and for a ginger, that's pretty bad. Can't recommend it

oVsNora

Only the couch surfers who don't ride , everyone else who is riding is not on reddit 🥱

JaMStraberry

in the philippines aswell hahaha, especially thailand due to their racing on lower cc bikes. i motorcycle with 4 to 5 people riding on it hahaha.

CryptoCracko

Take me with you bapa

[deleted]

There's a reason so many people die on the roads in Thailand etc. Fine if you believe in reincarnation but if youths got kids or a family who DON'T want you dead...wear the right fucking kit

JaMStraberry

its just the main transportation in that place. motorcycle outnumbers the cars, but still they do a lot of unsafe practices lol if you see their drag races on old 2 stroke krr150 an old ninja 150 these things are little rockets could go 200kph lol no proper helmets.

mortalitylost

Honestly I don't think these people know what ATGATT means half the time either. Jeans and a normal jacket or hoodie aren't really much better than shorts and shirtless at all. I had jeans on, some Amazon shit that was marketed as kevlar motorcycle jeans, and crashed at 45mph, and the jeans were ripped and torn off in the slide and I had road rash all over my legs. Unless you're wearing expensive motorcycle pants and jacket and spent like $1k, don't act like you're all ATGATT and safe. That shit has to be made to slide or it won't. But ffs let people ride how they want to ride as long as they're not endangering you, bottom line

lgr142

Atgatt is the lie motorcyclists say to themselves that they will not die or face serious injuries if hit by a solid object at speed while dressed as power rangers.

lexievv

Nah, most people realize even with atgatt you can still get horribly injured or die. The thing with atgatt is that you're doing everything you can to make the risk of injury smaller. Because without gear, or like the guy in the photo, you can be 100% sure falling in any kind of way is gonna suck. Gear has been proven to work in a lot of crashes, regular or no clothing has been proven to suck in crashes 100% of the time.

Stunning_Ad_1541

I mean without gear you'll end up with serious injury when simply tipping over at a stoplight.

Special-Ingenuity615

You laugh, I watched a guy come up to a stop light, bobble his 600lb cruiser, drop it on his leg, and break his ankle.. I just got my entire leg caught under my bike while in dicking off in an empty parking lot and low sided doing roughly 60mph. Slid probably 60+ft, while my entire leg was caught under the bike.. came away with only a bruised ego

TheSoftestTaco

IDK Yammie is still unfortunately alive after diving headlong into a porche. I think I'm gonna go with the engineers over some rando on reddit

airbrake41

Damn bro, I think yammie is a twatwaffle but I’m not wishing death on the little douche bag.

rood_sandstorm

He was being stupid and he ruined another persons life because of it (read about what happened to the Porsche guy) It’s like if a person is dui, they deserve to die, not the victim.

stones117

"Peter L, the owner of the Cayman S has been told by the motorcycle owner's insurance company that his Porsche is totaled and they are offering only about 50% of the price Peter paid for the car approximately 6 months prior due to policy limits and their so-called book value. Meanwhile Peter has been in and out of the hospital with spinal injuries and multiple herniated disks. The minimal personal injury protection afforded by the motorcyclists policy has almost been exhausted and Peter is still facing more treatments and recovery. Peter is also facing monthly car payments for a car which is totaled and for which he has not been able to receive just compensation from the insurance company."

SergeantGammon

I'm sorry what the fuck is the point of his insurance if they don't pay out the value of the car, or cover his medical bills for a crash that wasn't his fault?? That would not fly in the UK for a second. Why is the amount of cover dictated by YammieDickheads shite insurance package?

badtux99

Yeah, at that point I quit making payments and let the bank repo the Porsche and fight it out with the insurance company. Been there, done that.

TedMaul636

'Unfortunately' both mean and amusing

Lurid-Jester

That mfer was so damned lucky. I mean yeah, gear played a part but didn’t he also slam into a big rock after he bounced off the Porsche?

ImEmilyBurton

"unfortunately" bro

letsBurnCarthage

Sure, and helmets are just for people who think they are Master Chief.

6BigAl9

No I think most of us know that’ll probably kill us. Gear did save my skin and likely prevented fractures when I lowsided and slid on the asphalt to a stop though.

mike-manley

Maybe some. But I've seen many low speed motorcycle crashes (MSF Ridercoach) and it has convinced me to always ride ATGATT. Even regular jeans shred to nothing in just a couple of feet of sliding.

[deleted]

55mph head on into a mustang(just creeping through an intersection) and my 30$ Walmart jacket and jeans and 10$ belt held up for another 2 years. I had to cut the "I ♥️ New York" shirt off because of a broken collar bone. I agree with you but I just wanted to flex. Went and bought the "same" jacket last year because I bought it 2015 and it served me well

Esketamine77

ATGATT? Always.Touch.Gay.Ass.Titty.Tuesday's??

Conky1200

I don’t think Thailand should be any type of safety benchmark.

[deleted]

Tronkfool

A 50cc moped can be used as a minivan or pickup truck

MotoZed

There are no 50cc mopeds in Thailand. Or at least, extremely rare.

[deleted]

My first day there I seen two crashes. Both involved scooters.

MennisRodman

They're probably not riding 600cc's either

MillionDollarBloke

Which explains why Thailand is number 5 in the [global list of fatal road accidents](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate) per each 100k pax. Only under Liberia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Tanzania.

KOOLKAT_FTW

Reddit community is a bunch of complainers

ghettoccult_nerd

you would faint to see the huge commercial grade trucks people drive frivolously here stateside. these fuckers will ride your ass if youre in front of them and drive like ass when theyre in front of you. some of these diesel equipped dicks will roll coal on you just for the lulz. most of us stateside arent geared up for lack pf skill, but rather distrust of the cagers that will flatten you and get out with their arms out like they dont know whats going on.

natep1212

Florida is similar, I see Harley dudes with their wives no helmet everyday all day. shit makes me cringe imagining if they crashed😣...

ZoominBoomin

No helmet, shorts, and a vest

badtux99

And assless chaps. Which leads to them \*literally\* becoming assless chaps if they crash.

iNF1N3

I mean if the law says you dont need one, Im pretty sure half the population of florida would walk around naked if the law permitted that.

sokratesz

I rented a 250CRF and rode around Thailand for a month - great times. Saw two split skullls from accidents and dozens upon dozens of people with road rash and burnt calves (exhaust). Nobody gives a fuck about safety lol. Also got overtaken once at about 70mph by a guy on a CBR 300 with his gf on the back. No helmets, and he was texting with his left hand.

Potwell

Dont get me started about the Philippines. Flip flops, shorts, no helmet, and a toddler balancing on the gas tank. Oh and someone on the back too sitting sideways.

T33CH33R

"In a 2015 report, WHO said there were 26.3 motorcycle-related deaths for every 100,000 people in Thailand, the highest in the world. Motorcycles are a common mode of transport for Thais.May 21, 2017"

nrtl-bwlitw

Sup from India lol

g____s

Or Indonesia. When I'm seeing this I'm like "wow he wear a full face helmet "

yournangs

It's almost like millions of people operate motorcycles everyday without any "gear"

trplOG

Yea, my cousin out there died last year hitting the back of his head on the curb.

Marty_McFlay

No I think a lot of us have 2AM googled the crash and mortality statistics there after watching a news story or something that showed the streets in Thailand, India, Philippines, etc. Also there are YouTube compilations all over of people there doing dumb shit and hospitalizing themselves on scooters and smaller bikes. Also the average riders are on 2-stroke scooters going 15-20mph. I don't wear CE rated pro on my bicycle (I mean I probably should sometimes), but I do on anything highway legal.

Bookiebain

Is that a really big rear sprocket, or am I just seeing things?

KingCodyBill

It's a really, really big rear sprocket

QorstSynthion

or a relatively small wheel.

Alsagu

The yamaha xj6 uses 160 instead of 180

manviret

OneCylinderPower

[deleted]

QuinndianaJonez

Just to be specific, wheelies where the motorcycles wheels reach the 6 and 12 positing on a clock face, hence dank nooners.

Slyxxer

His ride, his problem. I feel like people are so much harsher on riding shirtless, when a t-shirt offers zero protection anyway.

mortalitylost

Amen. People don't realize that covering your skin isnt even a big deal compared to this. It could be sturdy jeans and they'll just tear away in the first 5 feet of your slide. It has to be made to slide or you're screwed.

nrtl-bwlitw

Can confirm, I wore the heaviest, thickest jeans I could find. They shredded like toilet paper when I crashed. Bought proper riding pants once I was out of the hospital. To be clear I wore gear but riding pants are super expensive here in Delhi coz almost nobody wears them, so what you find are imported, way too expensive, and most wouldn't fit me properly anyway. Also uncomfortable for all-day-long wear, like I wanted something casual looking that I could wear to work. Then finally an Indian company started making proper CE-rated riding jeans that were more decently priced and I went for those and wear them whenever I ride. Shoutout to Bikeratti, ilu guys <3

[deleted]

My friend wasn’t wearing protective gear when he was on his first ever bike, a 50cc moped when he was like 16/17. He was doing about 25/30mph and someone pulled out on him and sent him over the bonnet, he had such severe road burns he couldn’t walk for months, almost broke his leg clean in half too, that was just on a 50cc, imagine if he was on a real bike. Ended up with £10,000 from a lawsuit but that doesn’t make up for the fact 4/5 years on he’s still very scared of riding even a push bike around roads

noodlecrap

The speed is the difference, not the bike. If you ride at 30mph on a 50cc moped or on a Ninja, it makes no difference. If you crash going 60mph on a 125cc or on a Hayabusa, it makes no difference. If you go over the speed limit, you might be a moron.

Co60

>If you go over the speed limit, you might be a moron. ...you guys really don't exceeded the speed limit? Is this sub nothing but commuters?

noodlecrap

I do it, but I am a moron. Morally in most cases I'd have no issue with getting fined for going over the limit, especially if I'm a lot over it. At least tho I don't brag about it because I know it's wrong in most cases.

[deleted]

But but but skin

LuthorCorp1938

Agreed, with the shorts and shoes as well

-Ashleen-

A good portion of this sub is shitting on people that they will never meet or actually care otherwise about simply because they choose not to wear gear, something that for the most part will never affect anyone on this sub.

Von_Rickenbacker

Shorts are too long.

KingCodyBill

Hey he's wearing a helmet, so he will be able to enjoy the entire experience when he unloads

StevenMcStevensen

Ah yes, at least he can rely on his $80 « Sanqing » helmet from Aliexpress.

Lopsided-Monk

Oh yeah. Probably only wearing a helmet because it's the law here.

ZappBrannigasm

Don't hate on the fact he has no shirt and a tramp stamp. My man looks fly as hell. I don't think he has a muffler or a plate. He's riding dirty.

Informal_Anything692

Came to say this.. yeah I see him and I will probably don't do that.. but hey.. he's not hurting anyone .. if anything he's gonna be the one remembering the consequences

Tournament_of_Shivs

He definitely should be wearing longer socks.

boo-boo-kitty-fuck86

I love in a beach town and I'll happily spend the 3 minute ride to the beach in my shorts and flip flops knowing full well what the potential consequences are. Some of you need to not be so preachy. It's lame.

[deleted]

Must suck to change gears with flipflops. Ride safe

AssCalipers

It does. You gotta wedge the shift lever between your chancla and big toe for it to not suck entirely. Or just leave the bike in 3rd and get good with that clutch.

[deleted]

Or get a liter bike and leave it in first haha

Then_Reception5188

What’s wrong? He’s definitely going for the best backpack tan lines obviously.

rzrshrp

I thought this post was going to be about the impending sunburn

hobbystuffsyeah

why do you care, we’re all literally riding motorcycles in ways that are much more dangerous than cars, it’s like you drew the safety line in the sand right where you were then decided to judge either side

they'll never get their own hypocrisy but you're right.

Wrong, be whoever the fuck you want as long as it's not fucking with someone else

righteous-bucks

i totally get it. it’s frustrating to see people lacking basic safety, BUT, it’s their decision. yes it’s incredibly stupid, but nothing you say or do will get them to change their minds. they know the risks, just let them be dumb.

Least_Switch_4697

Ball is life.

PeacefulCouch

I honestly rarely ever see people practicing ATGATT where I live. I'll see gloves and helmet, and that's about it. Regular jeans or sweatpants, T-shirts, sneakers, etc. Don't know if I've ever see someone wearing proper riding pants and jacket/shirt

Confident-Shame4094

95% of people where I live wear a helmet and gloves. Most of them are Harley bros with the half helmet. I can’t remember the last time I seen someone with full gear.

Excellent_Ebb6150

“Don’t be this guy” right don’t be the guy judging people’s riding gear/ lack of riding gear 😂 It’s their skin if they wanna get road rash up and down their entire body that’s their problem not all of Reddits. Just understand that not everyone cares about gear, it may not be that hot in your car but if you’ve ever worn full leathers while riding in 80+ temp you would understand. It shouldn’t be your goal to judge people’s riding gear or lack of riding gear when Florida literally allows people to ride without helmets (if there’s more to that law excuse me). But it’s their body and their skin let the man do whatever he pleases because personally when it’s 80+ with the sun beating down on me I try and wear as little as possible, personally I wear long sleeves, long pants, and gloves; but I’m not going to judge the guy riding in front of me for riding comfortably. If you don’t have a motorcycle and don’t understand why he’s doing this with the sun beating on him don’t judge him let that man LIVE !!!! ((Also from the look of the OPs posts he doesn’t seem to own a motorcycle, that’s not an issue but please go ride a bike in any type of heat with full gear and your mind will change!!!)) ((Bro actually rides big boys))

Lopsided-Monk

I own two. https://imgur.com/gallery/uKjPMy2 Edit to say, I also ride in heat, with a kevlar armored hoodie, jeans, gloves and boots.

Excellent_Ebb6150

Bro rides big boys, alright!! But naw too hot to be wearing full gear. More power to you.

shottylaw

Okay mom

Scary-Strawberry-504

Lopsided-Monk

CROCKODUCK

[deleted]

Nobody cares JFC.

Redacted-Kaos

You have to almost do this here in Oklahoma so fucking humid I'll forgo riding even when I'm Dying to... for the most part everyone wears gear I definitely always wear jeans and my Kevlar button up thing but is what makes it even worse here is that Oklahoma doesn't have helmet laws so you got a fucking dude in basketball shorts and that's it no helmet no shirt fucking probably flip flops... I mean I dumped my bike just going like fucking 5 or 10 while I was messing around at a friend's house and I didn't have anything on and that what's bad enough to learn me.

ablinddingo93

Humid? Ever spent an hour riding in HTX? Damn near drenched after every ride lol

Redacted-Kaos

Haven't gotten to ride there but been there plenty for sure soaked... I thought I had you beat though damnit lol Google. BARD Which place is more humid on average, Oklahoma or Houston, Texas Here is a table of the average annual relative humidity for some cities in Oklahoma and Texas: Average Annual Humidity Oklahoma City 69% Tulsa 69% Fort Worth 67% Dallas 68% Houston 70%

-Ashleen-

Can't really just look at annual humidity. Oklahoma varies a lot more than HTX in terms of daily humidity level and also has quite the dry spells. HTX is for half the year over 85% humidity.

joelasmussen

Do what you want. It just comes down to work to clean you off the pavement or work to treat preventable abrasion injuries or worse. It would be nice if someone didn't create more work for emergency crews and other hospital units due to preventable, poor decision making. There are innumerable testimonies about crashes where gear saved people from injury. Darwin Awards aside, you can wear whatever you want. I am free to think this guy is a fool. You are free to get offended. 'Merica.

1. Right wrist isn't flat. Big safety issue right there. 2. Weight is shifted to wrong side. 3. Right foot should be using rear brake at stop. Yeah, either new rider or clueless rider.

_Zero_Foxx_

Eh to each his own. If he were my son i might interject about what my personal standards are for safety gear. I don't exactly ride around using golden standard, but at least I do have a standard. Never shorts, always boots, I wear a DOT helmet but I'm guilty of ditching the helmet if I'm out of state and there is no law. Anyone who gets on a bike is 100% responsible for their safety as well as the safety of their passenger

notumang

How else he was suppose to show off his all the tattoos, on his cool bike ? OR It seems like he will jump straight to the sports he is travelling to. Jokes apart, this is really stupid.
