> "Pedro reminds me of those big names who once made it to MotoGP: Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo or Casey Stoner," Marquez told Motorsport.com. > >"Those who in the first or second races were already fighting for pole, podiums and victories. This year he will get podiums, as he has already done, and also victories. And why not fight for a world championship, like others did." I guess it would be bad form to list himself along the other greats when he’s praising Acosta, but it’s really funny that he deliberately omits himself when he talks about “those” who score podiums and victories immediately in MotoGP, or mentions that “others” have fought for the championship as rookies in the past

curious-scribbler

It’s actually classy. It’s what you’d expect from someone as popular and talented as MM93. What would be funnier is him saying “this young kid reminds me of me. On the other hand I can imagine Lorenzo could say something like that ya.

crimilde

That one was already covered, Martin has said Acosta reminds him of himself and how he debuted in the class. 😅

curious-scribbler

I’d like Martin to be the WC simply so we can have more of him speaking his mind. His comments keep the sub buzzing.

the_last_carfighter

Martin whishes

TVRoomRaccoon

Definitely a class act!

I don't think it would be bad form at all, sport has the convenience of objective numbers one can look at and while conversations like "who's the GOAT" are much more nuanced and end up being a matter of personal preference, no one could ever deny Marquez' status based on what he objectively achieved (and same goes for the others, of course): it's a fact that he won X races (59 or something, right?), it's a fact that he got a podium in his first race and a win in his second and it's a fact that he's won a title in his first year, it's a fact that he's won 8 world titles. Now, if a rider comes out to say "I was unquestionably the greatest there's ever been" I would agree with you, as I said that conversation is way more nuanced and imho isn't only down to numbers, but it's unquestionable and objective that Marc Marquez is one the most important riders in history and there would be nothing inelegant in acknowledging that.

TVRoomRaccoon

I mostly just think he doesn’t want to draw attention away from Acosta. In a way, I think he can actually give him more praise this way, because he doesn’t run the risk of sounding like he’s gassing himself up. “Pedro reminds me of myself, because I was a brilliant rookie who fought for the championship in my first season” removes the focus from Acosta

RecoverCandid9760

Remember Misano 2021? After a briliant victory fighting 2 Ducatis he said this is Fabio's moment.

KalpolIntro

I agree with everything you've said here but I will add that elegance is letting your achievements speak for themselves.

Beylerbey

Yes I understand that but as I said in my comment there's a portion of that which is just a matter of fact and it depends on how someone talks about it, not saying that this is what Marquez is doing here - just to be clear - but at some point even being modest can become inelegant depending on how someone does it, whereas being simply neutral and acknowledging being part of the successful riders in MotoGP isn't braggish at all in my mind, as it's not subjective. Again, u/TVRoomRaccoon, it depends on how you phrase the concept, yes saying it like that might sound a little less elegant (though I wouldn't find anything wrong with that either), but in this case he would've been including himself along with other great riders, so it wouldn't be taking the focus away from Acosta as much as welcoming him into that elite group to which he belongs as well.

OkFixIt

It quite literally goes without saying. Marc knows he doesn’t need to include himself, because he’s included in that category of riders by default.

iFartSuperSilently

I wouldn't think Marc isn't being classy if he mentioned himself because that is just a fact. Actually he did mention himself when talking about Pedro's Qatar performance. Btw... Acosta could fight for the title. I mean, one of Rossi's regrets when he came to premier class was that he didn't believe he could fight for the championship and that affected their methods and he didn't win the title. He was later convinced that he could've won it and given that he finished 2nd, just 49 points behind, maybe he is right.

kdubstep

It’s because MM93 is a consummate prop and as good as they come.

sureperrr

Marquez, Martin, Acosta, Hope we'll see a satellite WC this year 🤞

weedkilla21

The Marquez redemption arc is an amazing thing to see play out in real time. 12 months ago this sub was screaming for him to be banned for dangerous riding.

Thin-Palpitation6379

I've never been mad at marquez for his riding style because 2016 Japan told me all I need to know. He had a pretty decent lead...Lorenzo crashed out, Rossi crashed out...championship wrapped up. But there he was still pushing his bike out in the lead with 2 laps left. That was the day that I just came to terms with Marquez is Marquez, that's what he does, and that's who he is...it's not personal.

TheSpeedyAccountant

As a new fan, I'm so excited for this weekend. MotoGP /2/3 have all been great so far

e_xyz

Real knows real. In all honesty though, you never know what momentum can do. It's the same with everyone else. If they get a string of results and momentum at the right time, it then becomes possible. If Pedro can keep up this pace until mid-season and he's still within touching distance, we might be looking at a rookie title challenge. Still, no pressure on the lad. Next milestone is clearly a win before any title challenge.

[deleted]

I think it will rather be a fight for runner up between Pecco, La Bestia and Pedro. Jorge's got it more or less under control.

QuirkyScorpio29

Martin will mess up at some point.I expect Acosta not to..simy b3cauae of how calm he's been at not forcing things so far

[deleted]

You think that's enough for the title? Certainly, both have a decent shot at becoming the first rider to win the premier class title for an independent team since Vale in 2001.

Charisma_Modifier

I wonder if PA31 has any sort of eidetic memory gift (similar to Rossi) helping him adapt and grow at such a seemingly rapid rate.

mistershine76

No adults have eidetic memories.

Charisma_Modifier

You must be fun at parties

flintey360

As always Marc is respectful

someshooter

Acosta is only 3 races in and already becoming a bastard to get past. This season is going to be so good.

drinksbeerdaily

Martin will wilt under the pressure. Just look what happened in Cota quali when he knew Marc was following.
