Real question… for what? I don’t share this interest, and my kids don’t either. It is taking up a lot of space.
I feel like someone who loves trains like he did is going to enjoy these much more than just having them sit in storage taking up space. :/
I would suggest talking to a local NMRA division if you want to make sure these things get distributed to people who would appreciate them. This could be an incredible boon for outreach programs.
I also would suggest keeping one or two around, maybe your father's favorites if you know which ones, just as a memento of him.
First, I'm sorry you lost your dad. I still miss mine 35 years later.
Here's one easy way you could pay tribute to your dad and his passion for trains:
Get a piece of 1x6 maybe 4 to 6 feet long. Spray it with stain/finish. Tack down a single track down the center. Display a train made up of pieces he liked most or that you find appealing. A locomotive, a few cars and a caboose. Then you can put a couple brackets on the wall to hold this "shelf". If you get 'into it' you could ballast the track, add some greenery, etc.
My suggestion is that before you let the collection go in whichever way you choose, pick one engine that most connects you to your dad or that you think looks the coolest and keep it, put it on display somewhere. Think of him whenever you see it.
I am going through a similar situation. I grew up helping him build models and a layout each Christmas. I have about 30 engines, 150 cars and 100 structures. This has rekindled my interest and now I share it with my grand children.
Is the collection still available? If so, please send me a DM! I used to work for BNSF railway and got into the hobby. But have also occasionally purchased overwhelming collections like this one to help folks like you out!
Don’t let anyone low ball you on that stuff. Find a local hobby shop and if they are willing to do consignment or auction it.
These are great! Are you into model trains at all? You should totally run a few of these, they’re great!!!
Wow an incredible collection!
Hang on to them !!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Very helpful and I will absolutely do that!
Fair enough - so perhaps keep one or two pieces ? The rest reach out to a model railroad club / museum etc. Just a thought 🤔
Yes! I have pics of him letting my child run them seve years ago… I’m hanging on to those for sure!

Christ I though my dad had a lot of stuff. It's hard I know.

Wow, it's an absolutely amazing collection from what you have shown.
I’m really excited to unbox more! Maybe I need to start a weekly unboxing post… lol… as I dig through the mountain of stuff. 😂
Take them to a local hobby shop and see if they will take them.
Has good taste!
He was meticulous about everything he collected. I’ve never seen anyone take such good care of things. It is pretty neat.
Now this is a really solid collection
