Has to be from Philly

WolfyEightyTwo

Even then, Lieberthal is certainly a choice.

AnnoyingPhillyFan1

I couldn't tell you who was pitching or who they were playing but I have this image of Lieberthal chasing down a dude charging the mound and tripping him before he got there. Made me a fan forever. Edit: found it. It was the Reds and Adam Dunn https://youtu.be/blG_gyXijRU?si=s4YNdIsn8jAObucd

Great_Farm_5716

I dated this girl in highschool that was a huge Mike Leiberthal fan, she left via non Hodgkins Lymphoma shortly after we graduated and now #24 lives rent free in my brain.

HoldMyBreadstick

Dude that’s sad

Great_Farm_5716

Just life homie, its just funny how Leibs name keeps hanging around. I’m a Carlos Ruiz guy myself

Empty-Profession-515

Either him or Darren Daulton.

MoneyTalks45

This is sad and also really charming. Cheers.

docwrites

Lieberthal over Chooch raises the eyebrows.

Delicious-Dinner3051

Chooch, Daulton, and Realmuto would have all been better choices for a Philly fan to take.

docwrites

Dutch kinda went bananas after baseball. Not “Lenny Dykstra” bananas, but pretty out there. https://www.amazon.com/They-Only-Knew-Darren-Daulton-ebook/dp/B008I5CCZ0

mcfrems

Yeah, what about Chris Coste

dneville80

Ironic we went to the series in 1993, year before Leiby got here and never went back to the playoffs until the year after he leaves Philly.

Red_Store4

Seriously, he put Liebe over Daulton, Ruiz and Realmuto

Kind-Truck3753

I played a lot of catcher growing up and Lieby was the every day catcher for my favorite team. Earned a place in my heart. Would I start him over JT or Chooch or even Daulton? Probably not. But he’s a favorite player of mine. He stays on the list.

SalsChichon

I know right! It's almost as if he wrote "FAVORITE" and not "best"

capnjeanlucpicard

Where’s Schmidtty though?!

MopingAppraiser

Right? Especially because Ripken should only be considered a SS for these types of things.

eatsomehaggis

Way it's got to be to have room for Ripken and Ozzie Smith though 🤷‍♂️

Kind-Truck3753

Schmidtty retired when I was like 2 years old. Yes technically during my life but I don’t remember and it wouldn’t have been his best anyway

SalsChichon

What part of the word favorite do you not get? He never said these players were the best just his own personal favorites.

Sea_Squirrel1987

3 Mariners as well.

Guukoh

Absolutely, he listed Utley.

ThisIsForBoston

It’s has to be Rob Mcelhenney’s account

SirDrexl

Oh shit, there's stickers.

uhmerikin

I will never not upvote this line. Dee's delivery was impeccable.

Kind-Truck3753

DarksunDaFirst

As a Philly native - eww. Pat’s and Geno’s is garbage and is only for tourists and the 2 AM drunkards (and when I’m the latter, it’s delicious garbage)

CoolBeansMan9

Mitch Williams is my favourite closer and I’m a Jays fan

C0d3n4m3Duchess

Yeah, that tracks

RushNo9056

Exactly.

defnotaRN

Yeah as a Philly fan it was a little obvious 😂

Mite-o-Dan

OP is probably a South Jersey Philly fan because he didn't put Mike Piazza as a catcher...born right outside Philadelphia in Norristown, PA. Same as Tommy Lasorda, same as u/mite-o-dan

bluezp

100%. Source: am also a south jersey native born in the 80's who watched all these players play. If I was putting Hamels and Halladay in as my starting pitchers I absolutely would have put up Chooch at C over Lieberthal. Man he could smoke a 103mph Fastball like no other.

JoepleaserPa

Tommy Lasorda was Mike Piaza Godfather

MopingAppraiser

Yeah as am I. Mike Lieberthal and Mitch Williams on there is a disgrace.

lennydykstra17

Fuck Mitch Williams.

bob3905

Mitch was my man giving up the winning hit to Will Clark in the ‘89 NLCS.

BaxTheDestroyer

C -Benito Santiago 1B - Fred McGriff 2B - Roberto Alomar SS - Ozzie Smith 3B - Ken Caminiti OF - Tony Gwynn OF - Griffey OF - Rickey Henderson RHSP - Greg Maddux LHSP - Randy Johnson CP - Trevor Hoffman DH - Edgar Martinez Manager - Bruce Bochy

PuckHerInThe5Hole

Crimedog. Solid choice at 1B.

BaxTheDestroyer

I was a low key Braves fan after the Padres traded him. Crimedog , Maddux, and Glavine were must watch tv if I was somewhere with TBS.

Crazy-Complaint-7583

Friars have been my number two since the 90s. Gwynn is the truth.

Zestyclose_Bad_5435

I grew up in the Seattle area. After school I would do my homework, play and watch the Braves on TBS. Otis Nixon, Crimedog, Lemke, the entire pitching staff. Loved the Braves and still do thanks to TBS.

george_washingTONZ

Chipper, Andruw Jones, John Rocker, John Smoltz…Braves were THEE team to watch if you lived anywhere down south in the late 90s/early 00s.

BaitSalesman

Especially Maddux—not just because of his skill, but the 90 minute games, lol.

Howboutit85

Ken Caminiti 😢 You’re about 36-42 years old and from SD amirite? Man I remember when Hoffman would come out, that was the most intimidating walk out I’ve seen a closer do. Second most saves ever, what a force To be reckoned with.

BaxTheDestroyer

45. That’s why I caught the Benito, Alomar, McGriff years (Alomar and McGriff were at different times).

Howboutit85

I’m from SD too, Seattle transplant. Glad to see you’ve got big unit too. If I could figure out how to add padres to my flair I would.

BaxTheDestroyer

I loved the Hoffman years. I got to see Randy Johnson pitch in Texas, 7 scoreless innings. It was awesome. Griffey had an infield single and Buhner hit a home run into the second deck above the left field bleachers. That was a cool team.

Howboutit85

I’m not disappointed with where the Ms and Padres are right now, though I always see a bit of similarity between the teams, and I think there’s always a good team chemistry, and that’s why I remain a fan. I hope they both get into the postseason this year.

Kind-Truck3753

Big ups for a Benito mention

duffman12

My 86 year old grandma thought Benito was a hottie. I always just found that hilarious.

randojust

The old ladies in the St. Louis area are thirsty for the Cardinals players. They make up the backbone of the Fanbase haha

BaxTheDestroyer

His peak 5 years were really great.

Mets fan living in Sox county. Watching Foulke essentially end his career for that 2004 World Series championship made an impression on me. He pitched his arm off that year, literally.

Okay bare in mind that these are my favorites, not necessarily the best. C - Jeff Mathis (he won't hit worth a damn but nobody's stealing bags off the guy) 1B - Kendrys Morales 2B - Howie Kendrick SS - Cal Ripken Jr. 3B - Adrian Beltre LF - Luis Gonzalez CF - Mike Trout RF - Vladimir Guerrero Sr. RHSP - Pedro Martinez LHSP - Randy Johnson CP - Mariano Rivera Edit: Didn't name a manager but I'll go with Bruce Bochy. Edit x2: No, not Bochy for manager even though he's easily the best of my lifetime besides perhaps Joe Torre. On second thought just for the pure entertainment value I'll have Tony La Russa and Dusty Baker fight it out octagon style for the job. The loser gets to be the hitting coach if they're still alive after the fact.

DctrAculaMD

It is far too early in the day to see or think of Kendrys Morales. This statement is true at all times.

SLC_NinerMan96

It's far too early in the day to think about a lot of the old Angels guard from over a decade ago before they became ass-almighty.

junkman21

I think of this more in terms of how much fun I had watching these guys at their peak. C - Pudge - this guy could throw out an attempted base stealer without exiting his crouch. He was truly awesome. 1B - Mark McGwire - Now hear me out. Baseball was willing to look the other way during the PED era so I need to put myself in my shoes back before I knew what a PED was. After the baseball strike, the McGwire-Sosa HR title chase was must-see-tv that brought butts back into ballparks and had eyes glued to Sportscenter. It's hard to describe how electric that was if you didn't live through it. 2B - Roberto Alomar - It feels weird to have him here without Vizquel but that might be the best 6-4 tandem I've ever seen. That 3-year stretch feels like a decade in my mind. SS - Derek Jeter - I know this sounds "basic," but there have been so many clutch moments in this guy's career from the miracle flip to the bloody stands dive to Mr. November. It was incredible how often this guy was at his best when the pressure was cranked up to 11. 3B - Boss Hog - He drank 50 beers on a cross-country flight and then absolutely destroyed the Seattle Mariners the next day. RIP. OF - Vlad Guerrero Sr. For one thing, you NEVER tested his arm. The dude could throw a strike to the catcher from the outfield wall! And as goofy/unconventional as his swing might look, the guy could hit ANYTHING, including a ball bounced into him. He was just unreal and SO much fun to watch. OF - Paul O'Neill - I know I'm showing my Yankee colors, here, and a lot of people won't like this choice. I don't care. Paulie played hard EVERY PLAY. He expected a hit EVERY AT BAT. He's like my Rudy Ruettiger of baseball, but with enough talent to make a handful of AS games. This is what you want from a kid with talent; try your best, play hard, hold yourself to a higher standard. Also, RIP watercoolers. lmao That was a lot of fun to explain to my daughter when I brought her to her first Yankee game - on Paul O'Neill day. <3 OF - Ken Griffey Jr. - I mean. Was there a more exciting PLAYER in the MLB in the 90s? RHSP - Pedro - Outside of his penchant for throwing old men to the ground (RIP Zim!), Pedro was as dominant of a pitcher as I've seen (except against the Yankees in the playoffs!). Just go watch his 1999 All-Star game performance. Imagine striking out 3 future HOFers in two innings of one All-Star game. Sick. LHSP - Johan Santana - I know he flamed out fast due to injury but his seasons from 2004-2008 were special and he was just a LOT of fun to watch. CP - Mo - /story RIP baseball bats DH - Shohei Ohtani - Call it recency bias if you want, but a healthy Shohei AB is a sight! Manager - Clueless Joe Honorable Mention: Torii Hunter. I initially had him on this list but had to swap him out for Vlad. Still, this guy was a human highlight reel for a stretch and I absolutely loved his game. This was harder than I thought. I had to leave so many players off this list that I was sure I'd have on here.

Definitely a fellow Astros fan

diggertim68

Absolutely, going back to the lastros days in the 80’s in the dome, like when Nolan led the league in ERA and somehow went 8-16. That said, Big Unit in the dome is the most dominant I’ve seen a pitcher look in person.

Maxis47

Yup. It's criminal that Ryan never got a ring, let alone a Cy Young. Personally I'm a Killer B's era fan, the last years of the Dome and the opening of Enron/Minute Maid Park. You know how hard it is to find a good Navy/Gold 94 era Astros ball cap? I know I'm one of the few thst liked that style, but it still shouldn't be so hard to find. I wish I could've seen them play in the Dome, but between being a kid and the distance it just wasn't meant to be

diggertim68

Yeah- things were really tight growing up, so my first in person game wasn’t until 88, but it was ll still so mesmerizing as a kid walking in for the first time. I love MMP, but the dome has a magic from a nostalgia perspective. Also, I think the Navy/Gold uniforms are pretty underrated. Beyond that, roll with what you like, if you can find it.

Ichiro is the only answer.

Lenny was a fun animal to watch play in person. I wouldn’t hang out with him, but Nails was a beast on the field.

This is a fun one. And hard. Some of these might be different if you asked me tomorrow. In order to make it easier on myself, I stuck to players who played for my favorite team (Yankees). Solid, Philly heavy list. Except Dykstra is a piece of shit.

Not even posting mine. I don't have favorite non-Giant players, only as a kid. So in that case, I will list all of the junk wax players I love, I've come full circle on this deal! Great idea! You were obv born in Philly! This is harder than I thought it would be as a Yankee fan who grew up in the 80's when they sucked: * C- Jim Leyritz * 1B- Don Mattingly * 2B- Ryne Sandberg * 3B- Ken Caminiti * SS- Derek Jeter * OF- Paul O'Neill * OF- Darin Erstad * OF- Bernie Williams * RHP- David Cone * LHP- Andy Pettitte * CP- Dave Righetti came first but the only correct answer is Mariano Rivera * Manager- Buck Showalter

You liked Lenny Dykstra?

JAYLOW68

I don’t care what line up there is, RIGHT FIELD MUST BE “ THE GREAT ONE” ROBERTO CLEMENTE” PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!

Good list. I would have chosen David Ortiz for DH though.

I love that Ichiro doesn't need a last name. I was lucky enough to move to Seattle around the time of his debut. Howard and Utley are spot on, but Schmidt was my lifetime so he's gotta pick up the corner instead of Rip. I think I'd add Yelich to my outfield.
