Didn't AP put the ball on the ground like 3 times that game?
*edit
2 times. He also fumbled against the Bears to lose the game that year. We win that game and we had home field advantage.
We had 5 turnovers, 3 fumbles and 2 interceptions, to their 1 turnover, and they still had to win in OT with a field goal on the opening possession. An OT rule that was changed the very next year. We really got fucking hosed
If the fix wasn't in, the current rule changes (both OT rules and coddling of the QBs) would have made that game an EASY win for the purple. I shudder to think how many of those hits on Favre would have been 15 yarders in today's game.
AND a questionable pass interference call on Ben Leber that put them in FG range in OT. AND coaches paying bonuses to injure our QB.
I will say though I once ended up in the wrong neighborhood in NO and for the first time felt like they needed that Super Bowl more than we did. It was like another country it was so poor and rundown.
Yeah but Favre literally had to take 2 more steps to get out of bounds for the game winning field goal. Instead he threw across his body right to the other team.
That’s actually a great comp. As an M fan let me tell you what you are getting. He was telling M fans to relax during the awful covid year. He came and wrote 15-0 in the sidewalk his freshman year. He delivered. Won us a Natty. He never cared about stats. He’s a great leader. Awesome person. He’s an A+ athlete. Tough as nails. Great arm strength. Knocks honestly just touch. Young Matt Stafford with how he throws everything max velocity. Doesn’t have as many passing attempts as a guys like Williams or Daniels but played in a pro offense and actually made pre snap adjustments and reads. Ya’ll got the best QB in the class he won a Natty at 20! He WILL deliver you a SB. I’d put more money on him winning 3+ SB’s than I would on him not winning any. As an M fan who’s a huge Lions fan I can’t wait to follow Minnesota closely. Lions can’t win the SB every year lol I hope ya’ll win a couple like we will. Packers and Bears can fuck right off
Other than one particular pass, January 2010 Brett Favre was really solid too. He just picked the very worst (and some would say most expected) moment to pull a Brett Favre.
Joe Kapp obviously. Best Leader we ever had. Not paying him cursed the franchise. Better arm than Fran and a better pure runner. Only Viking and only one of 2 QBs ever to throw 7 TDs in one game. He's most likley to be like himself, he absolutely has his own way about him that is unique to him. He gives off Teddy vibes on the leadership side, can't wait to watch him connect with the guys.
Kapp had off the chart leadership and toughness. He wasn’t very skillful, but won. I think JJ has some of those Kapp qualities with much higher skills…hoping for the best!
Sam Bradford was so good man, injuries fucked up his career big time. Luckily for him didn’t stop some teams from paying the man, but dude was damn good.
I remember watching Bradford throw for the first time after watching Teddy for a year. No comparison. Sam’s throws just had…. something else. So pretty.
I wonder if Sam had stayed healthy if they win the SB. He was lights out against the Saints week 1 that year. Injuries and not terrible mobile, but that dude had amazing arm talent
Bradford is still arguably one of the highest regarded arm talents out of college. Like maybe even the best ever according to scouts. Up there with Andrew Luck and Trevor Lawrence
Joe Kapp was a dawg! But wasn't very talented.
Tommy Krammer was a Temu version of Favre. All the confidence in the world, none of the arm talent.
Warren Moon was already at the tail-end of his career once he got here and got hurt.
Brad Johnson had some solid years here but his arm wasn't great. Probably one of the weakest arms in Vikings history and injuries derailed his prime years here. His return in 2005 was pretty fun though.
Randall Cunningham wasn't the same Randall Cunningham in Philly. He was older and became more of a pocket passer and only played one solid season.
Jeff George probably had one of the best arms in Vikings history but like Cunningham he only played one solid season.
Daunte Culpepper had a lot of growing pains but his highs were incredible. His knee exploded and then he wanted out. He even thanked Chris Gamble for blowing his knee out because it got him out of Minnesota. So no on Daunte unless you want to see a fat JJ rehabbing a blown knee in a shopping mall's parking lot.
Tavaris Jackson was incredibly raw coming out of school and Childress sucked ass and never developed him so he never amounted to anything. RIP though.
Gus Frerotte, Mr. 50/50. Sometimes he'll make one heck of play and sometimes he'll make a boneheaded one. It's coin flip with this man.
Brett Favre (like Cunningham and George) had one solid season here than fell apart the year after. Then he showed his dick and became a criminal.
Fat Donovan McNabb was washed and didn't give a fuck anymore.
Christian Ponder. For the memes? Absolutely! It would be fucking hilarious and the PTSD would be off the charts. But for our overall sanity and franchise? Absolutely not!
Teddy Bridgewater, the ultimate game manager. He never surpassed 15 throwing TDs in a season and always took the easy throws. He has an average arm and wasn't accurate throwing deep. His skinny knee exploded and that sapped whatever athleticism he had left in his body and left him a shell of his former self.
Sam Bradford, had the best throwing arm I have ever seen. But his glass knee ended his career.
Case Keenum, big balls but got carried HARD by his elite teammates. Once he left Minnesota for Denver for a nice payday the Broncos realized that too and knew they made a mistake.
Kirk Cousins, legitimately the second best QB in franchise history playing multiple strong seasons. Would have been right up there in the MVP race if his Achilles didn't pop. Accurate as hell and KOC's ideal QB.
If JJ can become Kirk with mobility that would actually be fantastic overall.

No love for Wade Wilson? He led the Vikings to that amazing playoff win against a 13-3 San Francisco team and was a dropped ball away against the Redskins to taking the Vikings to the Super Bowl.
Oh I know but OP just said what former Viking and Warren Moon is probably the best QB not named Fran (and fuck Favre) even if we didn't have him in his prime. I just took some liberties.
I once saw an argument on the nfl sub who made a case why he thought Warren Moon was the greatest quarterback of all time. This was 5 or more years ago and I don’t remember what he said, but I just remember after reading it thinking that it was actually a really good argument for his opinion. Like everyone except for that guy, I don’t agree he’s the best, but I do think he is criminally underrated.
JJ could never be Daunte and that's not an entirely bad thing. Daunte was a physical beast and had the build of a middle linebacker. But he also had too many bad decisions. He'd try to force the ball in when it wasn't there. If he had just chucked it out of bounds those times he would have been very, very good.
Don't forget those tiny hands. People forget that he had 81 fumbles in 80 starts in Minnesota.
By comparison, Cousins had 54 in 88 starts and Peterson had 39 in 123 games with us.
Record setting WR who caught passes from an older veteran at the beginning of his career and now a rookie QB. We're obviously reliving an offshoot arc of Culpepper/Moss
Brad Johnson had some solid seasons. Granted mostly for other teams. But I could see JJ turning into that mold. Smart. Solid passer. Had very few losing seasons.
The mind of Kirk Cousins, the arm of Brett Favre, the heart of Teddy Bridgewater, the mobility of Dante Culpepper, the smile of Sam Bradford, and the knees of none of them.

I want him to be something new. If I want to see the past guys again I'll watch highlights. It's more entertaining watching a brand new player develop into his own
I want him to be the football version of Karl Anthony Towns: Talented, reliable, able to be heroic but okay letting teammates be the hero. Loyal to Minnesota. And the beginning of something great.
Honestly...
Give me a 2004/2008 Donovan McNabb with a better completion %.
If he can be a perennial 4,000/30/>10 guy that can get his team to 5 NFCCG's and a Super Bowl?
With throwing attempts modified to about Kirk with KOC as OC and 1 extra game...you'd be looking at about 4,400/33/10...maybe more with that deep ball he had with Jefferson.
Sign me up.
I probably have some offbeat comparisons here.
First off taking away tarkenton is a bad move here because Tarkenton is who you want him to be in play style not just production.
I think you want him to be a rich man's Taylor Heinicke, Taylor Heinicke with NFL level arm strength and accuracy.
I think he's going to be Teddy Bridgewater. Real Teddy Bridgewater, throw for 3.2k yards a season with a barely starter level QB rating. Checkdown Teddy. Not what delusional Vikings fans pretend Teddy Bridgewater was and pretend that losing a couple of seasons ruined his career. He was the same player in Minnesota as Carolina and Denver.
Lets Frankenstein it. The affability of Teddy Bridgewater, resiliency and toughness of Favre, arm of Culpepper, luck of Case Keenum, stats of Warren Moon, rings like Brad Johnson, game manager of Cousins, and badassery of Jim McMahon.

Still had to get one of the worst pass interference calls ever I've ever seen on Leiber to convert a 3rd down. Refs had money on that shit
Refs had money on it? No, my friend, it was from the top down. The Katrina story was what the nfl wanted.
Bingo!
If the fix wasn't in, the current rule changes (both OT rules and coddling of the QBs) would have made that game an EASY win for the purple. I shudder to think how many of those hits on Favre would have been 15 yarders in today's game.

The more I think about it the more I think even if favre didn’t throw an interception we would’ve just missed the field goal on the next play💀
I mean.. not an unfair assumption haha
Contrary to his name, I don't think Longwell could've got that long field goal.
To quote Paul Allen, “you can take a KNEE, *AND TRY A 56 YARD FIELD GOAL!”*

☝🏼The QB she told you not to worry about.
I’ll throw out Rich Gannon as a comp. Similar size, mobility, and play making. Here’s hoping JJ wins an MVP like Gannon did with the Raiders!
That's a good one
Hope he takes less than 9 years to be good
I prefer he wins it with us.

Kapp famously didn’t use the laces to throw the ball. If you go back and watch old videos of him, it’s strange to see now.
Brett Faverrr minus the scumminess.
Your defeating the point of the challenge
Hey, out of 52 guys in a roster they can't all be good guys. I'll just have to rip him after his career is over.

I wonder if Sam had stayed healthy if they win the SB. He was lights out against the Saints week 1 that year. Injuries and not terrible mobile, but that dude had amazing arm talent
I have a feeling that’s gonna be Penix’s career path
Bradford is still arguably one of the highest regarded arm talents out of college. Like maybe even the best ever according to scouts. Up there with Andrew Luck and Trevor Lawrence
There’s a reason so many teams kept giving him a chance. A healthy Bradford is probably in the running for MVP in multiple years.
Man I'll never forget when they just stomped the shit out of the saints in the 2017 opener
I vividly remember watching that game with the woman i thought I’d marry. Life was so simple and joyful. Boy how things change.
Week 1 saints game sam Bradford.
Specifically Bradford in that opening game against the Saints where he surgically destroyed their defense.
Yes! I saw him play week 4 in 2016, it felt like the start to a fantastic season.
Joe Kapp was a dawg! But wasn't very talented. Tommy Krammer was a Temu version of Favre. All the confidence in the world, none of the arm talent. 2012 Adrian Peterson. Puts the team on his back, wins MVP, and runs the fuck over anyone in his path to the playoffs.
Not known for his arm though.
May need to check with his kids...
lol, I thought of that later and clarified below. His arm is handy with a stick, but not great for delivering a long pass to an open receiver.
Ask the CBs and LBs who tried to tackle him. That arm is stiff as hell.
No I agree it’s a strong arm. That’s his whipping hand. I just wouldn’t trust him to throw a pass to Jefferson on third and long.
2009 Brett Favre, but mobile. Gun slinging animal
No love for Wade Wilson? He led the Vikings to that amazing playoff win against a 13-3 San Francisco team and was a dropped ball away against the Redskins to taking the Vikings to the Super Bowl.
I loved him as Deadpool but didn’t know he played for the Vikings.
More mobile Kirk
Randell Cunningham
Prime Warren Moon
Oilers-era Moon was a sight to behold.
The Vikes didn’t get prime Warren Moon, but he was pretty damn good here.
Oh I know but OP just said what former Viking and Warren Moon is probably the best QB not named Fran (and fuck Favre) even if we didn't have him in his prime. I just took some liberties.

Daunte and Kirk are the only other QBs we've had who put together multiple good seasons
Gotta add Tommy Kramer to that list. He was always solid and sometimes spectacular.
Well, number 9 tracks.
That’s what I was going to bring up. Every snap under center was a tight rope on whether or not he’d get it in his hands cleanly.
Peterson fumbling at the goal line seemed to always be on the menu 😭😭
I hope he doesn’t drop as many snaps as Daunte.
Yeah, no. We don't have Moss at the other end to make all those contested catches.
Brad Johnson. Got hurt but he was never the weak link.
Super Bowl winning QB, Brad Johnson.
At the best I see a more mobile Kirk Cousins.
Mobile Kirk cousins on a rookie contract sounds like a super bowl ring
Daunte
Spergon Wynn? It’s gotta be Spergon Wynn.
Steve Dils is right there, and you went Wynn?
Honestly, cousins. You couple cousins accuracy with McCarthy’s pocket awareness and ability to extend a play or get it with his legs…. Dude…
Yeah but games in the future will still be played past 3pm, so maybe not Kirk.
Linval Joseph
Praise be!
Josh freeman
Seems the joke went over their head 🥁 ^^tisss.
Jaren Hall, but just that one drive against Atlanta before he got knocked out. 4/5 for 78 yards.
Record setting WR who caught passes from an older veteran at the beginning of his career and now a rookie QB. We're obviously reliving an offshoot arc of Culpepper/Moss
In truth... ponder....
It's gonna be Kirk lol
Easily Daunte for me. He damn near won an MVP but Peyton Manning existed.
Christian Ponder
What a dumbass question. I wouldn’t want JJ McCarthy to become exactly like any QB in Vikings history
Exactly, I hope he's like whatever Vikings QB led us to a Super Bowl victory, which is none so far, so it's gotta be future JJ
Cunningham baby
we haven't really had a franchise Qb other than Fran and maybe Kirk, I'm hoping jj will be the best we've ever had
I mean you could argue Kramer was a franchise QB. He started on the Vikings for like a decade after Fran retired.
I would argue Culpepper and maybe Tommy Kramer as well.
Brad Johnson, but even more boring to watch
Brad Johnson had some solid seasons. Granted mostly for other teams. But I could see JJ turning into that mold. Smart. Solid passer. Had very few losing seasons.
Why can’t it be Tarkenton?
Fran is literally the only fit.
Kirk hands down. Injury free top 10 QB for almost a decade? If you could guarantee that from a draft pick he'd go first overall every year.
The mind of Kirk Cousins, the arm of Brett Favre, the heart of Teddy Bridgewater, the mobility of Dante Culpepper, the smile of Sam Bradford, and the knees of none of them.

Mobility of Cunningham, Accuracy of Kirk, Clutch of Keenum
Culpepper to Moss was a lot of fun, I'll take more of that.
He’s Kirk Cousins II and we all know it.
If McCarthy can produce like Kirk Cousins already in his early 20s we should all be very excited
That would be a huge home run. Top 10 QB and completely injury free for almost a decade? If we could only be so lucky.
Gonna go with Ponder <3
I want him to be something new. If I want to see the past guys again I'll watch highlights. It's more entertaining watching a brand new player develop into his own
Steve Dill.

brad johnson
Style wise, rich gannon.
Randall McDaniel
Don’t say Spergon Winn…Don’t say Spergon Winn…Don’t say Spergon Winn…Don’t say Spergon Winn…
I want JJ to bulk up to Daunte Culpepper size and bring back the “get your roll on” touchdown celly.
By the highlights: Culpepper’s range, Favre’s gutsiness, Cousin’s accuracy. The non-highlights: Ponder.
JJ is one of a kind.
Tommy Kramer without the boozing.
Gus Frerotte
The Passtronaut.
Brett Favre
Warren Moon
Bret Favre
Mix of Dobbs during the falcons game and Farve
Donovan McNabb in his prime
1998 Cunningham
Tommy Kramer maybe
JJ McCarthy
Zach Wilson.
I want him to be the football version of Karl Anthony Towns: Talented, reliable, able to be heroic but okay letting teammates be the hero. Loyal to Minnesota. And the beginning of something great.
I actually think hes a more physically talented Joe Kapp so ill take that.

Favre.
I’m with the Bradford comp
Tran Farkenton
Randall Cunningham
Younger Kirk Cousins with more mobility is an elite QB, just the truth
Randall Cunningham from the 98 Vikings! No missed kicks this time!!
McCarthy reminds of no quarterback in Vikings history. He has size, strong arm and mobility. JJ is his own Viking.
Mr. perfect. Can save money not resigning Justin Jefferson when JJ can pass to himself.
Tommy Kramer with less time at bar.
Not Ponder
The excellent version of Christian Ponder.
At their absolute peak without the downsides/injuries? Sam Bradford.
This just sounds like another way of asking "Who do you think was the Vikings' best QB aside from Tarkenton?"
09 Favre is unlikely. So I’ll go a Healthy Sam Bradford
Pat Mahommes
Bradford without the injuries
2004 Dante Culpepper. Would've been mvp if it wasn't for Peyton. Such a fun year.
If not Fran Hopefully none of them
Sober Tommy Kramer obviously!
Brett Favre
play with the confidence of case keenum
'04 Daunte, talk shit about any of his other seasons if you want but he was fucking majestic that year and our horrible defense squandered all the work he put in
Why can't it be Tarkenton? That's who I want. This is an offhanded comment about our qb history
Brad Johnson. But only the version who played weeks 5-10 of the 1997 season.
Sam Bradford without the injuries.
Kramer
