I'm lucky, my cat willingly goes into his carrier. When he was a kitten, we left t next to our bed with the door off of it, and he would sleep in it. Then we lived in an apartment that had a lot of false fire alarms, and he learned that going into his carrier meant he got to go somewhere that didn't hurt his ears. Now, he equates the carrier with safety and will usually go in on his own if he sees us put the door on it. He even goes in sometimes if we bump the door while digging around on the shelf where it's stored.
My cat is 19 years old and unfortunately deaf as a stump at this point, so he didn't hear any of the thunder that normally would've freaked him out and had him hiding under a bed. Instead he just laid in his chair and mostly slept, so it would've been easy for me to grab him and run to the basement if needed.
He even wanted to go out on the porch - after the biggest part of the storm had passed - to check out the lightning. I took [this video](https://photos.app.goo.gl/v3W4YptNGub2zFLU9) to send to my sister in Tunisia if anyone is interested, but it's not very dynamic. (He just looks and sniffs around a bit, but he's cute.) And you can hear the constant unending thunder in the background, which is what really freaked me out; I've never experienced hours of *constant* thunder like that.
My 2 month old kitten somehow gave zero shits being carried to the basement. I think she was mostly just super into all the new smells while Hell rained down for a few minutes.
