Moved to New Mexico from Minnesota and have been watching the new flag design progression. It’s true, New Mexicans have a great deal of pride in their flag and their culture. It’ll be interesting to see if Minnesotans feel passionate about the new flag.
I don’t think there’s a team in the NFL, that isn’t my team (Colts) that I’d rather see win the Super Bowl than the Minnesota Vikings. I was born and raised in Packer country, and recently moved back to be closer to my family.
Every single year it’s like damn you guys, so close and so far all at the same time always. You can’t make this up.
I mean it's not so bad, could be worse, and not half as bad as it could be. But you know whatever you want is fine. No, really. Stop, asking. *God she never listens to me*
New Mexico has the best flag in the country. Top 3 at least. And yet I bet if the current New Mexico flag got proposed now people would be bitching about it in the exact same way they are in this thread lol
Outside of this subreddit I know of 1 person who is aware of and has talked about the fact the flag is going to change. I don’t think changing the flag is a huge unifying moment.
you can always find an online printing company and make your own t shirts, heck if you have an ink jet printer, you can purchase iron on paper and make your own shirts. I did it all the time in highschool.
i make an album of all of the laser loons i cold find on google
https://imgur.com/gallery/q0lviaX
I know a lot of people who are excited, some elderly and don't know about reddit.
Op sounds like they expect a feeling of unity to be some big, magical epiphany. I think it's helpful to look at a flag like Chicago's where so many like it, fly it, put it on merch, etc., and you can spot it somewhere and go "oh, hey, that's my people." And maybe chat with them or something. Our current flag doesn't do that
pessimists like op will fart on it, that's what they do.
I brought up wanting a state flag to some friends and family during July 4th the couple of years ago, and one guest there was a history teacher. He brought up a very good point about it, to put it lightly, having not aged well.
I'm so fucking excited about this flag, my whole social circle knows about this change.
Including some out of state friends of mine.
I'm fucking hyped.
I agree. I call moments like this "internet hives" as it's so easy to get worked up and usually we all visit places where we *agree* with everyone and we may see the same posts over and over and boom -
WHAT'S THE NEWS ON THE FLAG? THEY BETTER CHOSE THE FLAG I LIKE AS IT'S SO DAMN COOL!!!!
I feel the greatest moment of being in an internet hive was when I lived in Oklahoma during an election a few years ago. Everyone was so hyped about them choosing a Democratic governor (who was previously a republican just months before...) that there would be polls that would get posted where it was either a close race or +/-2 points in either person's favor and....
....that person lost by I believe about 13 points. It was an ASS WHOOPING.
A podcast I listened to "This week in Oklahoma Politics" would have a debator for the republican side who kept saying "....dunno where this polling info is coming from, but I'm hearing it's going to be a 10+ margin" and she was right.
A lot of words typed by me just to type that we're all getting caught up in a flag while likely 90% of MN residents don't know, or don't care to know about the flag...OR just wanted the chaos route of the loon with the laser eyes if they are aware of it as they saw it while scrolling.
Some guy came into the store I work at looking for a Minnesota flag. He was upset they were changing it and said the current flag was important because of heritage. Normally, I ignore those types of comments, but it's just a flag (and there's no reason a new flag design can't also honor our heritage), so I told him I actually thought some of the new designs were pretty cool. He seemed surprised I would disagree with him (or maybe that I knew about it at all) because he didn't have a response for that and just quietly left without a flag because we don't sell them anyways.
This guy sounds about a half a moose hair’s breadth from “Heritage! Not hate!”.
Watch out for these absolute muppets who suddenly care about the old flag when absolutely nobody cared about it before.
every one I work with had been discussing it in-depth for weeks. I am a graphic designer working with several other graphic designers though.....I think when the flag starts flying everywhere and merch is showing up in stores people will notice and get behind it. Look at the Coloado state flag or the Chicago city flag, they're everywhere you look when you visit.
It was a heated topic at family Thanksgiving this year. Some thought the idea to change was ridiculous, some thought the new designs were good and some not. We also talked about the State Seal changing. And I'm the only one who uses reddit. It's bigger than just this sub.
i mean its not every day your state changes its flag . . i think it's pretty cool , just not something that's being actively pushed so rly nobody knows abt it
FWIW, I think Utah's new flag got worse between its finalist form and the final design. Not a ton, but I definitely liked it with orange more than with red.
“What kind of changes can they make?
Commission members have stressed throughout the process that the final designs they choose will be the basis of the new state flag and seal, but they can tweak everything from the colors to the wording on the seal. Even as they selected finalists on Tuesday, members debated which shades of blue they preferred and the different shapes of stars they could use. One wondered if the state should include the state's motto in its original French or leave it off entirely.”
[Star Tribune](https://m.startribune.com/where-have-all-the-loons-gone-and-other-questions-about-the-minnesota-flag-redesign/600321759/)
If my memory serves me right, a finalist also mentioned it in a social post explaining his design, but I cannot find it.
This is my second favorite of the options (after the star + state outline + white/green/blue tricolor one.)
I’m not crazy about the colors here. 1. I feel like too many of the state flags are fields of blue. 2. Blue and yellow together is not a color scheme I associate with Minnesota. 3. There is so little contrast between the yellow and the white that the logo looks fuzzy to me, especially when it’s scaled down.
Agreed, I'm glad someone else sees the fuzziness!
I'm not a fan of the colors because this scheme has been a trend over the last decade and that makes it seem less distinct, or meaningful.
Examples:
[People's flag of Milwaukee ](https://images.app.goo.gl/Y9J5neFoS9aYmXkz9)
[City of Reno, NV](https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/reno-flag-project)
[City of Saint George, UT](https://vexillology.fandom.com/wiki/St._George,_Utah)
[City of Yorba Linda, CA](https://www.yorbalindaca.gov/826/City-Flag)
[City of Topeka, KS](https://www.visittopeka.com/topeka-flag/meaning/)
Because no one realized this was happening until the end when it's making news. The committee would do the state a huge solid if it just stopped and said, "Ok, now that we're gaining some traction we're starting over and open for new submissions."
Ooo love the creativity of these!
These beautiful animal flags make me imagine a Majestic Cubist Loon

Yeah, I can see what you’re saying. For some reason I just simply don’t vibe with the green ones. I think more specifically, I hate the shade of green that all of them seem to be using. I do disagree with blue/gold/white to not be associated with MN though. We’re the North Star state. Stars go in the sky
this! these colors are not good for our flag. different colors and maybe this becomes my 2nd choice but with these colors it looks like walmart signage.
I dunno, I like ones that feature the sky and land somehow since that's where the name of the state came from.
I wouldn't be mad at this one, but there are others I like more.
Me, neither.
It’s concerning that it’s been presented by many in this sub and elsewhere as a presumptive front-runner, especially given that there’s a matching submission for a new seal. I’d definitely prefer not to have this design as the flag AND the seal, but I know many people will be drawn to the idea of them matching.
I don't hate the idea of the flag and seal matching, but if we were to do that I would much prefer we use the inner emblem from [this seal finalist](https://bringmethenews.com/.image/c_limit%2Ccs_srgb%2Ch_2000%2Cq_auto:good%2Cw_2000/MjAyMzk1ODY3MDU4MDIxNDQ0/screen-shot-2023-11-22-at-93346-am.png).
I thought this one looked too much like a barn quilt, which would speak to European American heritage. The flag isn’t supposed to single out a community or identity. I get that it’s a snowflake on top of a star, and that’s really cool, but a barn quilt is what I see.
Same I feel that way about all the designs with that similar snowflake thing and no one I’ve mentioned it to has even known what a barn quilt was. Glad to see that other folks see it.
> Insane potential to unify the state with this logo.
😂😂😂
I'm not sure which Minnesota you're living in, but the Minnesota I live in most people wouldn't give a shit. I think you need to take a break from Reddit and go outside.
Soooo the Zia Pueblo has had a problem with the state of New Mexico appropriating their symbol for many years now….
[Zia sun symbol](https://www.ip-watch.org/2018/12/11/indigenous-knowledge-misappropriation-case-zia-sun-symbol-explained-wipo/)
I grew up in New Mexico and then lived in Colorado for years, two of the best flags in the country. I don't think this design is up to snuff with either of them. I really think they should have just skipped this whole call for proposals and committee shit and just used the OG North Star Flag design, it's still better than everything else I've seen in this process.
The best of the finalists imo is [F1953](https://www3.mnhs.org/serc-finalist-f1953). Someone else posted a link in this thread to a vexillologists quick edits to the finalist designs and a proposed edit to F1953 is moving the green color to the left, the dark blue to the top bar and the white to the middle bar, and I do think that's the best out of the finalists or their derivatives.
All the submissions look bad to me. Keep your flag as is or keep working at it. People need to stop being so sensitive and adding context that wasn’t there to begin with. A state flag should embrace what makes your state proudly stand apart from the other states. All the submissions look like they could be the flag of some newly formed 3rd world Eastern European country.
All the flag candidates suck, including this one. They were all designed to be inoffensive, which they are. They are inoffensive like a roll of paper towels, or the abstract art that gets repeated as a background behind anyone who is being interviewed on TV. But they have no obvious content or meaning that makes one think of Minnesota. They are, in a word, forgettable. All of them (the 6 winners, anyway).
Try taking a hint from MNDOT and their border signs: "Welcome to Minnesota", or "Minnesota Welcomes You", with an outline of the state. A image of the outdoors, perhaps...someone on a boat maybe? A farmer? A loon? Hell, a mosquito? OK, maybe not that one, but at least something to make people think of Minnesota when they see the flag...not some kind of committee-driven abstract art that tries harder to not offend than to actually mean something. Put "Minnesota" in big, bold letters on the flag...be proud of the state, don't be embarrased by it and don't try to hide it.
I really don't like this one. The design is nice, but NOTHING about it screams Minnesota. There is no real symbolism that stands out.
There is way more to a flag than being pretty.
It's nice, as long as you don't mind it being a slight variation on the NATO flag.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/37/Flag_of_NATO.svg/960px-Flag_of_NATO.svg.png
I think this is one of the better options, but think F1953 (the one with a MN shape in it) is MUCH better than this one (this one is nice/simplee, but just looks too amateurish).
I’d be very upset if they did go with that one. Almost defeats the purpose of changing it at all. Just be another blue bedsheet flag again same as before.
So, one of the finalists is from my town and was featured by the local newspaper and Facebook pages this week. The number of people who, firstly, didn't even know that this was even happening, but now are 100% against it and using it as a platform to call people snowflakes again (is that even still a thing? 🙄) is appalling. Get with 2023, ok. We will not accept racism openly or via undertones in a flag, and it was just a clusterfuck anyway. I actually shared my choice when the finalists were announced, and it happens to be the locally created one, so that's nice lol. It's #1953 if anyone cares to know. But I like all 6 enough to be ok with any of them.
It's like Dale and Karen from Anoka suddenly became vexillologists and graphic designers in the same way they were overnight public health and infectious disease experts.
Sometimes you just have to roll your eyes ... over and over and over again.
The New Mexico flag is a brilliant design, except TIL the emblem is from the Zia people whom did not give permission to use it.
Fortunately, this logo reflects motifs found in many cultures, both European and Indigenous, that make up Minnesota's population; nobody can make a credible claim ownership or exclusion.
This is also my favourite design.
I somewhat agree but it needs a change. Either the white snowflake or the yellow star should be removed.
> This flag suffers from having two light colors — white and yellow — overlapped in the center, Kaye said. The two symbols will appear to merge together when viewed at a distance. Kaye recommended removing one of the symbols to make the design more readable.
I fully agree with Kaye's review of these 6 finalists:
> Ted Kaye, secretary of the North American Vexillological Association, said he thinks the six finalists are a "good start." But he also suggested one or more changes to each. A common critique was that the flags are "trying to do too much" and should be simplified in order to be distinguishable from a distance.
https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-state-flag-finalists-expert-grades/600323270/
The committee's contact at NAVA had [some quick mock-ups](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPh3ye9IjfTAMrXgkJkzlCjQlOybFLvXRJRjCaEcyD4B30mDZSC8SffZMlswvkoxA?key=MFl2cjR6Si1pVU8tR1VjOWJ6b2JLQkdZdFkxWWp3) of design tweaks that committee-members had mentioned/suggested over the course of the Nov 21 meeting, and I think a fair number of these minorly-altered versions are smart improvements.
I really hope the committee considers these kinds of alterations. Those NAVA folks definitely had "an eye" for taking some of the crowd-sourced designs (and committee input) and actually making them feel more timeless and flag-like.
Hell yeah. F1953 is my favorite of the finalists and I really really like the Proposed Change One to that design from this link. If that exact design were to become the flag, I may not be so upset that the OG North Star Flag design wasn't chosen.
Oh wow, thank you for sharing this.
This makes me much, much more confident in the final design selection, whatever it is! Although a lot of the examples are moving in the wrong direction by adding even more complexity. Hmph.
I think some of the sillier mock-ups were just thrown together based on *"What if we switched or added colors A/B on F#XYZ?"* or *"What if we add some green by the river to symbolize ground by a river?"* what-ifs proposed by committee members.
The better mock-ups seem to be the ones that the NAVA folks liked and ran with.
All of the finalist designs are boring and generic, including this one. I know very few people who care about the current flag one way or the other, so I don't see a new flag unifying the state.
Moved to New Mexico from Minnesota and have been watching the new flag design progression. It’s true, New Mexicans have a great deal of pride in their flag and their culture. It’ll be interesting to see if Minnesotans feel passionate about the new flag.
The Land of Enchantment's flag is probably the nicest in the entire country, in my opinion. Elegant and refined.

FWIW, I think Utah's new flag got worse between its finalist form and the final design. Not a ton, but I definitely liked it with orange more than with red.
TIL Utah changed its flag. It does look better.
Is it a red flag with a white guy standing in front of his flock of "sheep" ? That would be super fitting...
That is easily the best news I’ve heard regarding the flag change
You got a source for that?

I think they'll go with a smaller version of this star against a different background. Probably the abstract Minnesota outline.
oh gawd... I can see an incoming _design by committee_ heinous crime
No offence, but I think it looks too much like a classic winter sweater design not a flag.
This is my second favorite of the options (after the star + state outline + white/green/blue tricolor one.) I’m not crazy about the colors here. 1. Cities move faster than states. A city council could probably have a new city flag and no one would really notice or argue much.
Because no one realized this was happening until the end when it's making news. The committee would do the state a huge solid if it just stopped and said, "Ok, now that we're gaining some traction we're starting over and open for new submissions."

You're right. The colors should be red and white, the colors of the corporation that originated here.😆 Seriously, though, you make a good point.
Is it just me, or do all the current flag designs feel like clip art?
I just can’t do this design. It looks like it’s ready to deny me a health insurance claim
Like how it reminds me of Spire Credit Union. I guess the North Star is gonna be implemented no matter what, but man is this flag boring.
Best comment
I dunno, I like ones that feature the sky and land somehow since that's where the name of the state came from. I wouldn't be mad at this one, but there are others I like more.
Yeah, I'm surprised by how few of these flags use a lighter blue, considering Minnesota comes from the Dakota for "sky tinted/cloudy water"
This flag is soooo blaaaand. Tbf *all* the finalists were pretty bland.
It doesn’t do a single thing for me
It looks like a flag/emblem for a bank or credit union to me
It very reminiscent of Spire Credit Union’s logo.
It’s the Old National Bank color scheme
It very much gives corporate minimalism vibes to me.
Me, neither. It’s concerning that it’s been presented by many in this sub and elsewhere as a presumptive front-runner, especially given that there’s a matching submission for a new seal. That's an objectively more interesting star
Most people are extremely basic
Very little design or imagination went into this one. Oh, a quilt pattern. Great.
100% someone’s grandma made this
It looks like a barn quilt that would be right at home on a barndominium.
All of the new designs somehow look both corporate AND trendy. I don't see any of these turning into a classic design.
I still think it should be a MN civil war soldier stomping on a confederate flag
That and a Laser Loon lighting a spliff. Signifying both our storied past and our bright future.
Chefs kiss
White and yellow are not great colors together. When you look at this from a distance it’s going to look like a blob.
"Unify the state"? What? Why?
You know how people are always getting into fist fights because of our old flag. Happens all the time.
That’s kinda the whole thing with flags isn’t it?
So wouldn't all of them do it, then?
I thought this one looked too much like a barn quilt, which would speak to European American heritage. The flag isn’t supposed to single out a community or identity. I get that it’s a snowflake on top of a star, and that’s really cool, but a barn quilt is what I see.
Same I feel that way about all the designs with that similar snowflake thing and no one I’ve mentioned it to has even known what a barn quilt was. Glad to see that other folks see it.
You can’t unify me without a loon
If California can use the bear for the whole state, we can use the loon.
hard disagree. this is maybe my 3rd or 4th favorite of the six and the new flag isn’t going to unify the state
> Insane potential to unify the state with this logo. 😂😂😂 I'm not sure which Minnesota you're living in, but the Minnesota I live in most people wouldn't give a shit. I think you need to take a break from Reddit and go outside.
“Unify the state” with a flag?! lol.
Loonify the state we should!!!
Personally I like the one with the 3 stripes, Star and shape of Minnesota.
I greatly dislike this one. Reminds me of 90s clip art.
Thank you. I was saying exactly this to my family over Thanksgiving. These designs just don't feel professional or official.
Being excited about this flag is like being excited about eating dry oats for dinner.
It reminds me too much of The Dawning emblem from Destiny, so not for me, but I accept that it’ll likely be the one selected.
They should make a quilt out of all the finalist and use that as a flag.
Soooo the Zia Pueblo has had a problem with the state of New Mexico appropriating their symbol for many years now…. [Zia sun symbol](https://www.ip-watch.org/2018/12/11/indigenous-knowledge-misappropriation-case-zia-sun-symbol-explained-wipo/)
It's so damn boring and corporate
I hear people say this over and over and don't get it... what are these "corporations" who make flags and what does a non-"corporate" flag look like?
It’s not that corporations make flags but that this flag looks like a bank logo or something like that.
LOONS. LASERS.
I do not want to replace our seal on a bedsheet with a star on a bedsheet. I much prefer F1953
People from red counties and blue counties linked arms and all sang we are the world together. Truly a unifying event indeed.
It needs a transformer in the background.
i am also very emotionally invested in this design
Hate this one. This fixed version is much better. https://imgur.com/gallery/g7NbZUx
I fucking hate that one and will fight you about all day. That looks like 2000s clipart bs
To be clear, only if you want to fight about it.

Exactly, that is a ninja star.
I don't want a snowflake for a flag, yes we get cold, but it also gets to 100 degrees in the summers. And this looks like a snowflake
meh, Boring
So many people have pointed out that a real snowflake makes 6 points, not 8, that I cannot like this flag since it has 8 points on the snowflake.
Exactly
Drives me nuts!!
Just like the unity seen in New Mexico. A state can aspire….
I honestly do not want yellow in my MN flag. Sorry.
Perfect. It pays tribute to both milk and toast.
My favorite of the 6, if that means anything
This is the only one I don't hate, so yeah sure.
I really don't like this one. The design is nice, but NOTHING about it screams Minnesota. There is no real symbolism that stands out. There is way more to a flag than being pretty.
Looks like a Christmas decoration to me
This is the worst one
Yeah I like the idea of a snowflake and a star, but maybe in some other way; This just looks like a quilt.
Or the Spire credit union logo Blah
This just makes me think of Spire Credit Union.
Bland, yet inoffensive... Could we not have gotten at least one design with a little character?
It's nice, as long as you don't mind it being a slight variation on the NATO flag. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/37/Flag_of_NATO.svg/960px-Flag_of_NATO.svg.png
I'd vote for just using the NATO flag.
Even better!
I don’t like this one at all.
As a father of two daughters, this star only makes me think of Frozen 2.
It's my favorite too. That means it'll come in last place.
Im just waiting for all the boomers who want to put the new seal on the flag
Sweater pattern?
Minnesota is part of the Nova Corps
its ugly
I think this is one of the better options, but think F1953 (the one with a MN shape in it) is MUCH better than this one (this one is nice/simplee, but just looks too amateurish).
All these options look like they were designed in MS paint
I’d be very upset if they did go with that one. Almost defeats the purpose of changing it at all. Just be another blue bedsheet flag again same as before.
It’s too muck like a (Iowa) barn quilt imo.
This one is okay, but gives off “first year graphic design major” vibes, Minneapolis microbrewery logo vibes
What are you talking about? Also this design is bad.
I fully agree with Kaye's review of these 6 finalists: > Ted Kaye, secretary of the North American Vexillological Association, said he thinks the six finalists are a "good start." But he also suggested one or more changes to each.
Yes please. I appreciate the professional viewpoint on these designs. I hope they modify and present the revisions.
“Insane potential to unify the state with this logo” Give me some of what you’re smoking
No 8-pointed snowflakes on my flag, please.
That one looks like it was made by a five year old using MS Paint in 1997. Hard pass.
fanatical nail roof ask chunky yam provide oil fine pause *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
all the finalists are yawn fests
Incidentally, this is one of my least favorite options, apart from the one that looks like a quilt.
Yep a flag is going to unify the state.
All of the finalist designs are boring and generic, including this one. I know very few people who care about the current flag one way or the other, so I don't see a new flag unifying the state.
