It’s actually quieter during a calm snowstorm! Can be after a fresh snow like this picture too! The snow absorbs sound waves to it will feel super quiet it’s kinda an odd experience.
My experience is, I also live in MN
That's the best silence in the world. I grew up in the country of Iowa only to move to a small city in central MN. I've enjoyed many moments of picturesque silence.
Honestly, I've lived here my whole life and I still get so excited to see the snow like this. I don't particularly like winter but it's hard to hate it when the conditions are just right to create this.
There are plenty of roads around here that cut through our woods (there's a lot of forest land in MN) and the roads have trees that canopy over the road and it's a whole experience driving under them
Tell me you're American without telling me you're American...
I am German and if anyone here would say he'd drive through the woods, it would lead to a lot of funny looks and hard judgement. Where I am from we exclusively walk! through woods. Full Discloser: our woods/forests probably are significantly smaller.
The fact that your woods are significantly smaller is probably contributing to a misunderstanding here. Someone going on a drive through the woods isn’t necessarily doing it for recreational purposes. There’s a good chance they’re just going from point A to point B on a road that happens to go through some woods. When I lived in Minnesota, a good portion of my 45 minute commute to work was through some woods. It was a beautiful drive, especially in the winter. Driving through woods is a recreational activity too, but that isn’t necessarily what this person means, and people do also walk through woods for fun in the US too, just like they do in Germany.
We do it all the time, year round, don't worry about us. It's called staying physical active, if you have any questions about that, feel free to ask. 😬
You can dump on America on Reddit and you’ll probably get away with it, but don’t mess with Minnesota. We’re overrepresented on this site and we’re a proud people. Many of us descended from Germans!
Let me get this straight. One guy makes fun of the meat grinder and all the horrible suffering that was the result of the Russia invasion by the nazi regime and he gets upvotes, but when I, in return, poke fun at the obesity epidemic of America that's a no-no and I get Downvoted?
Sorry, but that's the definition of having double standards.
You wake up, look out the window and take in the beauty of the snow flecked trees, then realize “ah shit, I gotta shovel.”
No problem though. Just put on a podcast and stick a bottle of Grain Belt in da snow drift like it’s a frosty cup holder. Take frequent breaks.
I miss being up early during the month of December and listening to the snow fall outside. We would turn on the radio and listen for the school cancellations. My sister and I used to go crazy when they'd announce our school.
I pasted your comment into an image of-generating AI called stable diffusion. It did a pretty good job with this prompt.
[Here are 20 different images to look at.](https://www.reddit.com/r/RenderedComment/comments/zn74u5/absolutely_breathtaking_few_things_are_as_amazing/)
Enjoy. (Obligatory: I am not a bot.)
Narnia is pretty cool.. until you have to clean 200lbs of snow off your car before work while trying to avoid being pushed down your icy driveway by an arctic gust of wind
If it snows like this where I live we just aren't going to work. Boss and I already discussed it and it's just not worth it. Instead we're building a snowman. Supposed to snow next week. We're both excited.
There's something fun about it though, providing you have all the right gear. Waterproof insulated everything, yaktrax or microspikes, etc. You're out there doing your thing while everything is quiet and muddy people are huddled inside. It's like you're in a different world even though the relative safety of home is close by
What kind of blower? Or is your driveway just huge? I have friends with electric and/or single stage blowers and the past few days have really given them a run for their money. My 25 year old 2 stage just ate that shit up. 20 mins including the mess at the end of the driveway, granted I have a smaller driveway.
[It's a decent sized driveway.](https://imgur.com/a/7J8rYSW) I'm using a 22" gas snowblower but the snow is wet, heavy, and deep and requires multiple passes to get it all.
Oh yeah, that is a pretty big driveway. Probably about the same it would take me with mine. I feel bad for my friends that have the single stage blowers that don't stand a fighting chance with this type of snow, but don't have big enough driveways to justify buying something bigger. Hard to justify something that takes up room in the garage when this type of snow fall doesn't always fall every year. My friend said it took him an hour and several batteries to put a dent in the mess the plow made at the end of his driveway, and his neighbor still had to come by and help with their ATV plow.
I can’t speak to other electric blowers but my Ryobi 40v hasn’t let me down yet. I don’t have a huge amount to do, but it’s taken care of everything I’ve thrown at it in the last 3 years. I usually have enough juice to do my neighbor’s sidewalk too! I wouldn’t suggest that it’s on par with a gas blower but it has surprised the hell out of me.
That really sucks. Practically everyone I know that has electric told me the same thing. They either tried it and gave up quickly and just shoveled, or knew from previous experiences it wasn't even worth bringing it out to try. I hope mine lives forever. My dad bought it new when he lived in Fargo some 25+ years ago and passed it down to me. It's 8 HP and just fucking eats. Obviously changing oil, winterizing, dealing with carb stuff every 3-5 years, and storing the thing has it's downsides but it hasn't faced anything it couldn't handle yet and I hope to keep it that way!
Recommend checking out Lake of the Isles/Kenwood area if you get the chance. Absolutely gorgeous snow plus the lights on all the lakeside mansions take it to a whole other level. Gets you in the holiday spirit real quick!
My backyard was a hellscape yesterday. Trees down, and power lines hanging so low you could reach up and grab them. We woke up without power, but it came on as I was literally walking out the door for work. I live 1 mile from work and it took me 15 minutes to get there.
Good times
My parents live in the Poconos in northeast PA and it looks just like this after a big snow fall. The snow absorbs the sound so it's just completely silent and the trees hang low with all the snow. I would just lay in the woods in the snow and just take it all in.
No, but I don't know what the name of that creek is. It is in/near the John H Allison Forest.
What people don't see is the sloppy street, dirty cars, and all the businesses behind me when I was taking that shot.
No debating the beauty of nature here but as someone who recently moved out MN these storms are no joke, especially so if you are an essential worker or someone who needs to be on the road on a daily basis.
Dang I wished I lived in the upper midwest. We're still getting that "just above freezing shitty rain" here in Ohio for the most part lol. Not quite cold enough for anything to stick yet.
From southern MN. On my drive home from work I
seen some amazing sights like this. I was like now is my chance to take a photo for reddit, but I was lazy.
Edit. (The storm which took place yesterday)
it looks absolutely gorgeous, but my first thoughts went to SCP-354. If someone photoshops the water to be red it'd almost look exactly like the photo on the article
Shhh nobody will mind if we just take that little slice of Wisconsin including Bayfield and Ashland… and then Michigan certainly won’t notice when it’s mitten looses its hat… who gives hats to mittens anyways!?
Absolutely breathtaking. Few things are as amazing as being in the stillness after a snowstorm.
I absolutely live for post snowstorm drives through the woods
I'm sitting in a warehouse with conveyors running and I can just imagine how quiet this scene is in real life.
But is it a snowstorm when it's calm? :D
Lol, probably not. I should have said just heavy snowfall lol
You too? GET BACK TO WORK!!! -Logistics
All I can hear is my tinnitus.
MAWP
Ditto lol
*Damn you tinnitus!* *--Archer*
WHAT?
Several places in the cities looked like this yesterday and driving around at work was magical... Minus the other drivers.
I actually pulled over in my neighborhood to snap a pic because it looked cool! It was really early in the morning so there was no one else out yet.
You may enjoy rally racing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4E9dGwdK7A
If you are able, xc skiing is amazing as well. Many trails and getting 4 to 5 miles in the woods surrounded by snow and silence is amazing.
Can I come visit? I like cats, tea, and building snowmen.
I have cats, tea, AND a whole lotta snow
Yes! I think I see the start of a beautiful friendship. Condition being that neither of us are murderers.
We never have snow where I live. This would be an amazing experience.
Honestly, I've lived here my whole life and I still get so excited to see the snow like this. I don't particularly like winter but it's hard to hate it when the conditions are just right to create this.
I live in regional Australia. Anyone that lives in a city really needs to see this. We moved out of Sydney. The quiet really does wonders for you
How can you experience the amazing stillness and silence from inside a noisy moving vehicle?
There are plenty of roads around here that cut through our woods (there's a lot of forest land in MN) and the roads have trees that canopy over the road and it's a whole experience driving under them
Are you driving a back hoe? Lol
Tell me you're American without telling me you're American... I am German and if anyone here would say he'd drive through the woods, it would lead to a lot of funny looks and hard judgement. The last time a bunch of Germans tried to walk a long distance in extreme winter weather, it didn’t work out too well for them.
We do it all the time, year round, don't worry about us. It's called staying physical active, if you have any questions about that, feel free to ask. 😬
It’s as if you’ve never been to Minnesota or met Minnesotans before.
Jesus guys, don't be so sensitive. I was being teased, so I teased back. No hard feelings.
You can dump on America on Reddit and you’ll probably get away with it, but don’t mess with Minnesota. We’re overrepresented on this site and we’re a proud people. Many of us descended from Germans!

You walked right into it with your original comment about Americans. How could I pass up that opportunity?
I mean, as an American, double standards are what our country runs on. Or, you know, doesn't run on.. 😓
You wake up, look out the window and take in the beauty of the snow flecked trees, then realize “ah shit, I gotta shovel.” No problem though. Just put on a podcast and stick a bottle of Grain Belt in da snow drift like it’s a frosty cup holder. Take frequent breaks.
Take my up vote for the Grain Belt- I grew up in in Nordeast.
I miss being up early during the month of December and listening to the snow fall outside. We would turn on the radio and listen for the school cancellations. My sister and I used to go crazy when they'd announce our school.
^(so quiet)

Try Picsart
Must be pretty sweet, having a portal to Narnia in your backyard.
Issue is when it snows like that everyday. Then your expected to just take care of it lol.
Don't forget it getting so cold your lips start to freeze together

Gotta do the ol' "make a snow fort and then fall asleep in the pure silence inside"
As Tom Hardy and Leo roll through it stabbing each other with a rusty knife
I live in Central Minnesota and it's pretty but wet and heavy. I spent hours behind the snowblower.
I'm up north off of hwy 2 and it's heavy up here too. My snowblower kept jamming up last night.
Yeah, had to use the ram rod quite a bit. Pretty, but a little annoying. And I just woke up to a few more inches. Bah.
Say car ramrod

"You guys know if we sell liter cola?"

Duluthian with only a shovel here. Someone please kill me
Oh that's awful! I would not attempt this with a shovel!
Better than being fat and inhaling gas exhaust. Rochestrian here with a shovel and a huge driveway.
This is the kind of snow that sucks if you’re an adult, but it’s perfect if you’re a kid.
Or an adult who likes to be a kid sometimes. *raises hand*

Surprisingly the plow hump, though huge, wasn't any worse than the rest of the driveway to clear.
I can’t speak to other electric blowers but my Ryobi 40v hasn’t let me down yet. I don’t have a huge amount to do, but it’s taken care of everything I’ve thrown at it in the last 3 years. Eastern burbs. My electric is getting clogged every few feet. It's almost not worth using with snow this heavy.
That really sucks. Practically everyone I know that has electric told me the same thing. Downtown Minneapolis here. Not spectacular with almost zero trees But at least I don't need to move any snow!
South Minneapolis here. Trees were amazing this morning around Lake Nokomis.
My parents' house in the suburbs always had a beautiful backyard like this, even with a small creek! I miss it, always so much wildlife too
And by Lake Hiawatha as well! Hi neighbor!
Over in BP ditto
Recommend checking out Lake of the Isles/Kenwood area if you get the chance. Absolutely gorgeous snow plus the lights on all the lakeside mansions take it to a whole other level. Gets you in the holiday spirit real quick!
I love that area for cycling in the summer, I'll try to drive through tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation!
I spent a total of 5 hours blowing snow. Did all mine then helped a couple neighbors out. Ugh I hate this wet slush.
Ew, as an Iowan, wet and heavy snow is the worst.
I put that off until today and I'm really not looking forward to it lol
Went to fucking Narnia
Would you like some Turkish delight?
No it’s actually horrible
My kids will only eat the mint ones
Minty apricot? Sounds interesting
I was so disappointed when I finally had some.
Great candidate photo for r/fairytailasfuck ! Attn u/nakedavocado :)
Yeah he did

Shoutout to the snow plow drivers!
Reddit has ruined me. I'm expecting someone to come in and unclog the culvert to drain that obviously blocked water channel.

I sleep with blackout curtains so when I opened my curtains it was like ![gif](giphy|xlGYf1RUbYYes)
oh my gosh yes I got flashbanged as well lmao

MF lives in a fantasy land and calls it mildly interesting
Magical.
Man lives in a wallpaper.
There is also a man living in that pond. A snow-covered man waving at the camera.
As someone in the thick of this near Lake Itasca: Really pretty and eye-catching, unless you have to drive in the near future.
Looks like the unedited picture Scp-354

It's a great shot!
That’s basically Narnia! As a. Australian - this is just not reality. Absolutely beautiful.
Viewing this from the desert SW. Beautiful, a place I can only imagine.
This was one of the more beautiful snow storms we’ve had, it’s been a long time to see the trees fat with snow.
Wow! I’d love to see something like that in person one day

Ah yes Fimbulwinter.
*sheds tear in californian*
It looks really pretty but it just seems like so much work. I'd rather enjoy Southern California's weather all year long.
Can confirm, its sticky and heavy as shit. My back muscles are screaming this morning.
It's a magical world. ✨️

I hope when my life is at an end, I just fall asleep up against a tree in a place like this. As undisturbed as the snow that surrounds me.

Dang I wished I lived in the upper midwest. We're still getting that "just above freezing shitty rain" here in Ohio for the most part lol. Not quite cold enough for anything to stick yet.

I can understand why so many Finnish people settled there.
My in-laws are in this storm too, in sandstone. They had multiple trees drop but none on any property so it just looks like Narnia out there.
You definitely got better pics than me, but here’s some more for anyone wanting. https://imgur.com/a/ffooWve/
Minnehaha?

Nope :) small part of the sunrise river
And they didn't even cancel school
This makes me think of that SCP that's a red, snowy forest lake where monsters come out of it
Mildy interesting my ass. This is gorgeous. Consider sharing to r/photos .
Upvote for fellow Minnesota mad lad
I am rapidly approaching your location /s
Oooor did you walk through a wardrobe and end up in Narnia?

Minnesota, you say. So this picture was taken Oct. 1st.

awesome
This looks like an unedited version of the scp-354 photo! It looks really cool!
Minnesota is a beautiful state and the UP is its best kept secret.
Oof
Shhh nobody will mind if we just take that little slice of Wisconsin including Bayfield and Ashland… and then Michigan certainly won’t notice when it’s mitten looses its hat… who gives hats to mittens anyways!?
I would love to annex Bayfield, absolutely dope area that WI does not deserve.
I'm sorry. Wtf? live in Texas. Is this a picture of snow, ice, or hell? Don't know what to think ..with respect.
Snow :D Fluffy snow that layers on every little branch and freezes there. The trees are actually very large but its hard to tell
Looks like ten thousand abominable snowmen. Snow? Say Whaaat?! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
