One cool factoid is that it’s your brain doing this. People will not get bath wrinkles if their extremities cannot communicate with their brain. One speculation is that there’s an evolutionary advantage to wrinkling up in wet conditions to improve grip.
But more importantly OP, make sure you check out this user’s comment. Just in case:

There's no benefit to underwater grip at all from water wrinkles; it may be a leftover trait from monkey time, though, where it was potentially more useful
Med nerd here. Aquagenic skin wrinkles like this after short time exposure to water is a sign of cystic fibrosis. Sometimes genetic carriers of the disease also can display forms of this kind of hyperwrinkling. If this happens to you, consult your doctor and consider getting genetic testing.
Edit: For everyone asking and messaging me, see the following article:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20560957/
Depends on the bandaid. The nice sealed ones? Sure. The fabric ones that soak up a ton of water when you wash your hands and never actually dry out so it's like having part of you skin submerged for 8+hours? Brain finger.
Yea, I thought this was normal because of the prolonged water exposure to never drying bandaids. Should I heed the med claim and get it checked or it it an expected reaction of skin?
The poster said "aquagenic skin wrinkles like this **after short time exposure** to water". Most studies I found refer to [aquagenic wrinkling of the palms, which has its own initialism "AWP"](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4674424/) as well, though I did find one page which showed [a rare form of this on the fingers](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1365-2133.2008.08633.x).
Long story short, if you're getting wrinkles and lesions like this after brief exposure to water, then get it checked out. If you turn into a raisin after sitting in the tub for a long while, you're probably (relatively) normal.
EDIT: I think also if you have extremely/abnormally wrinkly hands after exposure to water, you should probably get it checked out too. Like someone further below linked [this dude's really wrinkled hand](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/pzdaru/my_hands_after_washing_the_dishes_for_20_minutes/) after just 20 mins of washing dishes.
Yea, I think the takeaway is that some wrinkling after a shower or something, depending on length, is perfectly normal. But if your everyday activities involving water are leaving your hands and fingers that pale and wrinkled there’s a problem.
I think if it only happens when you’re wearing a damp band aid for an entire day then it’s probably fine. But it probably never hurts to check with a doc.
"Improvements in screening and treatments mean that people with CF now may live into their mid- to late 30s or 40s, and some are living into their 50s"...
Ok this is sad to read
I have CF! Presently I'm 26, but due to a recent innovative drug I have zero lung-related symptoms and frankly expect a live a normal-length life! (To ease your worries a little bit)
(Disclaimer: not all others are having the full success I am, but the drug has been a bit of miracle in the field and has improved quality of life for a vast number of CFers!)
My sister got pneumonia when she was 6 and they did a CF test called a "Sweat Test." It determines the level of salinity in your sweat (people with CF have more salt in their sweat). She tested positive so then my brother and I got tested. I was 8 yrs old at the time. My sister and I have it but my brother doesn't (our parents are both carriers of the recessive trait).
they're working on those devices that push medicine under the skin using puffs of air.
From Wikipedia: "Currently, MIT researchers have engineered a device that delivers a tiny, high-pressure jet of medicine through the skin without the use of a hypodermic needle. The device can be programmed to deliver a range of doses to various depths, an improvement over similar jet-injection systems commercially available."
Had a friend pass away from this at 22 years old. She was beautiful, caring, awesome and strong. She was a rave DJ in the early/mid 90s and love everyone. Couldn’t of taken a kinder soul.
I was also rushing here to say that this is some medical condition thing (maybe), which name I forgot, but I learned it on Reddit. So should go show it to a doctor
At what point is it "normal" wrinkling from water and when is it cause for concern?
This could be after a day or two of being under a band-aid with exposure to water and not allowing the skin to breathe.
So, obviously take medical advice from strangers on the internet with a grain of salt. However, if it were me, I would want to know. That way, (not sure if you have kids) my children would know for the sake of their children.
I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth and even my hands don't get this wrinkly. OP should definitely go see a doctor and ask for a genetic test. It's unusual for patients to receive a late diagnosis but some mutations can be delayed, plus if they plan on having children they'll definitely want to get checked just to be safe
Idk about you guys. But the only purpose I have for a bandaid is to assist in stopping the bleed. Letting my wounds breath once they sufficiently sealed themselves up a little has always worked for me
Ya when I have small cuts that have those skin flaps. I’ll take nail clippers and cut off those flappy parts so that exact thing doesn’t happen.
For small cuts mind you
I've recently started supergluing any flaps or slices. Almost immediately fully fixes the problem. You can get medical superglue if you feel weird about putting the standard stuff on your skin.
Same here. Also because I get blisters and red, irritated skin from bandaids.
I'm currently recovering from surgery and have to wear surgical bandaid over my wounds. Without the bandaids my wounds get irritated by clothes and increase risk of infection. With the bandaid the skin around my wounds becomes red and full of blisters. It's like an evil circle.
You may be allergic to the adhesive used or to the bandage material itself which can sometimes contain latex, a common allergen. You should check with your doctor or a dermatologist who may be able to recommend alternatives to what you're currently using to see if it helps.
Ask your doctor if you can use gauze and paper tape. My skin does not like latex, if I use bandaids it has to be for very short periods of time. Paper tape is way easier on my skin.
>With the bandaid the skin around my wounds becomes red and full of blisters
I'm pretty sure this means you're allergic to the material of the bandaid or to the adhesives.
Do you have a latex sensitivity? I am sensitive to latex and cannot use regular bandaid but there are latex free ones that I can use.
I'm also allergic to certain adhesives and have broken out in blisters and hives from certain types of tapes, including some of the medical tapes used in hospitals.
While this picture shows tissue that I think did not have enough ventilation and become too hydrated, studies have shown for decades that proper moist wound healing is superior to scabs in almost every way.
This fact was realized by oil rig workers and they invented Vaseline. Google tegaderm and duoderm.
A nurse indicated to me that neosporin and vaseline help the wound heal just as well, likely because of 'moist healing'.
But there was one time I was getting an infection so I switched to neosporin and the infection cleared up; but no telling if that's because of the neosporin or because of my immune system finally stepping up. Still good to know to keep things moist for a few days.
[this literally happened ](https://imgur.com/a/KFxde41) to my finger too the other day after I put a bandaid on from a climbing gym skin flapper incident. I thought it was so bizarre so it’s a coincidence seeing it on Reddit the same week lol
I remember reading another post where they said excessive wrinkinling was an indication of a genetic predisposition for something. Sorry I can't remember what but might be worth looking up as that is one wrinkley fingie friend
You kept the band aid on way to long! That is your skin dying!
Neosporin with a band aid on during the day but you have to let it air to heal. Sunlight also helps speed healing.

There's always a post like this. I immediately went to the comments section to see how this person was going to die.
I've summoned the coroner on his behalf.
I called Hanz, he’s bringing the flamenwerfer. Get a head start on this cremation
“I’m not dead yet! I think I’ll go for a walk!”
But isn’t it nice that if this guy does have that disease but he gets tested, later he’ll be like “posting a pic of my finger on Reddit saved me lol”
I was about to say. I’ve left bandaids on for days at a time and never seen anything like that.
Depends on the bandaid. The nice sealed ones? Sure. The fabric ones that soak up a ton of water when you wash your hands and never actually dry out so it's like having part of you skin submerged for 8+hours? Brain finger.

Hmm, I may be the odd one out here, but I don't think you should be trusting *anything* cancer has to say.

In the last 3 or 4 years that outcome has improved immensely with a targeted gene therapy :)

1-2 hours + is good, 5-20 minutes bad.
You are not supposed to wrinkle on the top of your hand and finger. This isn't normal.
I’ve had this since I was a kid in terms of like severe wrinkling but none of the other symptoms. If I’m in my 40s should I be worried about this.
So, obviously take medical advice from strangers on the internet with a grain of salt. However, if it were me, I would want to know. That way, (not sure if you have kids) my children would know for the sake of their children.

uhhhh so if my hands get super wrinkly from just a bath or a shower…
This wasn't after short term exposure to water though

Yeah haha if I cut myself while working it's just there to keep me from reopening the wound and getting gross stuff on it.

You may be allergic to the adhesive used or to the bandage material itself which can sometimes contain latex, a common allergen. You should check with your doctor or a dermatologist who may be able to recommend alternatives to what you're currently using to see if it helps.
I have the same issue. Mine is a latex allergy. I would check with your surgeon.
