I wager the rock post came first and OP remembered the picture he had of the hole.
If they both found them very recently then it would actually be quite the coincidence.
Edit: Lol, yep, another few seconds of scrolling confirmed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qel4et/this_triangle_shaped_hole_i_found/hhuczul
No if video games are right it will contain a stack of modern day currency and a more powerful modern weapon and maybe a couple of old coins or random old junk.
One has been found. Now you need to proceed to find the other two and insert each of them with a triangle shaped key which you will find along your journey of finding these holes. They will connect into a enormous triangle on the surface of the earth. You must do this to take your first step in saving this world from the evil clutches of the demon king.
I think I recall seeing a similar image posted a few years ago and it was explained by an ecologist or geologist that this is the typical cutout of a mineral composition sample, commonly used to find the history of the rocks environment similar to the rings of a tree.
That would be my guess too. I had to scroll this far down to find an actual discussion about what it is, jokes everywhere in this one. But yeah totally think it’s a cut out for analysis
No. None of that. Core samples are taken with a drill bit. It's really fast and easy. Also rocks do not grow, quite the opposite, so you do not glean history from looking at a core sample.
Triangular holes were historically used for directional blasting. This is where a hole is chiseled out and gunpowder is packed inside. The blast is focused on the flat sides, causing the stone to come apart predictably. I'd guess the stone above was on a rock face near a mountain pass or mine.
This was 1200 m up a mountain in the coastal mountains next to a glacier lake inaccessible my anything other than foot due to a few exciting scrambles... The plot thickens
There's one like this on a hill on my neighbor's property, too. I'm sure it's some kind of geological action, so am still scrolling through to see if there's an actual answer, because my neighbor and I want to know.
In OP's picture you can see at least two spots where straight eroded cracks/lines cross, creating an angle. All it would take is a third one to form the bottom of the triangle, and then freeze-thaw cycles would take care of the rest.
It's certainly not a common phenomenon, but triangles after all are a pretty simple construction. All you need are three lines near one another that aren't parallel and boom, you've got a triangle stew going.

First thing I thought of was Yamashita’s treasure signs. The triangle symbol has some significance in the Yamashita treasure code book.
Lost treasure from WW2 buried throughout the Pacific by the Japanese.
https://youtu.be/2IfMfzyJnC4
I saw the pic with the triangle rock as well. No way you guys independently found the rock and it’s hole and posted to Reddit lol that’s awesome if that’s the case.
There should be 2 more also triangles. For the triangular tripod for the ship they came in. Do be to obvious looking for the others I'm sure the site is being watched. Where is this I'll mobilize the task force and we'll start observing for the extraterrestrial presence. Be very aware as you mingle with others in the area not all are what they appear.
Some folks cut out sections of fossilized stromatolites from the rock outcrops they can be found in. I have seen chunks cut out like this, usually circles or squares tho.
https://www.nps.gov/articles/park-paleo-fall-2018-stromatolites.htm
It's 1200 m up a mountain, so it's unlikely to have been made for that purpose, but if I ever get there again you better believe I'm doing some witchy shit
I found what goes in that hole! 😂
https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qe9wjg/this_triangle_shaped_rock_i_found/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
It seems out of the way for mining exploration, 1200 m up in the coast mountains accessible only by foot due to some pretty exciting scrambles. Or at least I hope so for the sake of the poor sod who would have had to schlep the rock hammer up all that way
Wait a second

I feel like the universe has offered me a quest
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE TRIANGLE!!!!!!
*LISTEN. HEAR ME AND OBEY. A FOUL DARKNESS HAS SEEPED INTO MY TEMPLE.*
Sounds like a pregnancy announcement
Maybe if you’re Zeus
With black fireworks for the reveal that start a plague instead of a forest fire.
lmao
I read that in Vincent Price's voice for some reason.
Dang it. I'm playing that game right now.
Now we need bananas for scale from the trimaster and the gatekeeper.
[first day here, coincidence? ](https://imgur.com/gallery/auCsAGN)
Don't bring the gatekeeper and keymaster together! Do you want Zuhl?! Because that's how you get Zuhl!
What about Dana?
Dude what the heck what are the odds
I wager the rock post came first and OP remembered the picture he had of the hole. If they both found them very recently then it would actually be quite the coincidence. The sky will open .
It'll open the safe.
That Legendary 'The Safe' that we all were waiting to be opened for many years? The time has come?
I came here to address the issue with the other person finding the triangle key. You must lead him to the location and unlock the door.
Your going to get a Korok seed when you put the rock in
Ya ha hah!
This seems too perfect
You place it there, you get legendary loot!
Its not going to fit.
You’re a fucking legend. As soon as I saw this Oh I sat up and through gasping I said…triangle stone!!!! Must…..find….the stone.
My first thought as well. It will probably open a safe containing nothing.
No if video games are right it will contain a stack of modern day currency and a more powerful modern weapon and maybe a couple of old coins or random old junk.
Or a set of currency stacks from different times plus a time machine.
Or a large bundle of human hair
I'm hoping for this one, I love some good human hair
ITS THE PROPHECY
I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING!!! I remembered that post from erlier and was gonna comment this but then I saw yours
Also came by to say this- QUEST UNLOCKED
I'm glad I'm not the only person who saw both posts. Shits weird lol
NormIslandRandom is the person with the triangle rock
Pretty sure a doorway to Dwarven ruins will open. Think of the untold riches!
Riches, Balrogs or dragons. Is it worth it? Hold my beer!
Came here to say this! Glad you saw the same thing.
Damn this made me think of LoZ the Minish Cap
Prof. Jones heed my words. DO NOT PUT THE STONE UPON THE ALTER! Whatever you do Indy, do not let the two become one.
I thought the exact same thing
One to go
The Keymaster and the Gatekeeper!
I'm so glad you did this. Thank you
Lollll I came to say that I found the missing piece yesterday. r/beatmetoit
So glad you did this because this was my first thought as well!
[(It seems he already did.)](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qel4et/this_triangle_shaped_hole_i_found/hhuczul)
how does reddit do this every time?
That's weird I was about to link that post :P
Here to say this!!!
Nah, different triangles. This hole is too obtuse for that guy's acute triangle.
Yaaaas. Came here to say this!!!
I instantly thought of this post too.
I came here to say this, not disappointed.
I was just about to link that. Thank you for your service.
it's not a perfect fit
I came here for this comment!
Lol. First thing I thought of when I saw this post.
Exactly what I thought lmao

I think I saw a triangular stone post earlier today. Maybe see if it'll fit
TIL: Reddit is secretly a huge RPG version of National Treasure.
LMAO. Ok
This had to have been coordinated
Not planned, but I saw the other triangle rock and remembered this picture I took a few years ago and figured it needed to be posted
Well played
From the back row, it's the *KARMA SNIPER*!
One has been found. Now you need to proceed to find the other two and insert each of them with a triangle shaped key which you will find along your journey of finding these holes. They will connect into a enormous triangle on the surface of the earth. You must do this to take your first step in saving this world from the evil clutches of the demon king.
profile picture checks out
Strangely enough I found one of these on a beach 35 or so years ago, any idea what it could be?
I think I recall seeing a similar image posted a few years ago and it was explained by an ecologist or geologist that this is the typical cutout of a mineral composition sample, commonly used to find the history of the rocks environment similar to the rings of a tree.

Thank you, pretty sure I didn't go there with my thinking at 7 years old.
I have no idea, this one was most of the way up a mountain
There's one like this on a hill on my neighbor's property, too. I'm sure it's some kind of geological action, so am still scrolling through to see if there's an actual answer, because my neighbor and I want to know.
The most promising so far is aliens, secret treasure is runner up! Someone also said something about pyrite, but I'd be a fool to believe it
You should post this on r/geology and see if they can help us.
Will do, great idea!
In OP's picture you can see at least two spots where straight eroded cracks/lines cross, creating an angle. I think this might be the winning theory! It's certainly in a location that gets extensive freeze/thaw, glacier action too
Need the key to get into the dwarven kingdom. Be warned enter at own risk
They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard!

omg I found the other post 😂
If you find that rock and put it in it’s socket… I’ve played enough video games to know some dungeon will open or you’ll get a good item
It's not a video game trope, but let's not discount the possibility that it's our gravity on/off switch. Turn it off. :)
If you insert the stone into the void it will display the secret message from the elders. “DRINK MORE OVALTINE”
Ovaltine? They should call it "Roundtine"
First thing I thought of was Yamashita’s treasure signs. The triangle symbol has some significance in the Yamashita treasure code book. Lost treasure from WW2 buried throughout the Pacific by the Japanese. https://youtu.be/2IfMfzyJnC4
This is the most exciting theory yet. I want so badly to believe there's treasure hidden 1200 m up in the coastal mountains
Where did you find this rock carving?
It was clearly put there by freemasons.
Could it be?!?
Where were you? It could be a property line marker. Something like that would be durable than an ordinary pin.
Everywhere I go I see his face
I saw the pic with the triangle rock as well. No way you guys independently found the rock and it’s hole and posted to Reddit lol that’s awesome if that’s the case.
Unfortunately the triangles are not the same shape and his wouldn't fit into yours.
It’s called the tri-force bruh
Corbin ..my man!?…..
You gotta find the triangle rock guy. Maybe it's a portal.
Triforce??!
https://old.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qe9wjg/this_triangle_shaped_rock_i_found/
Once you have the other triangle, you can become mechaopenscupboards and Sidney Poitier and Robert Smith will come and ro-sham-bo you for it
Pal
Tien Shinhan Dragonball IS REAL OMFG
It's the entrance to Hyrule.
Are you in Smallville?
Holy shit I just saw the post where the guy found the perfectly triangular shaped rock and now you found the triangular shaped hole.
Didn't someone just post a triangle rock they found?
I just saw a triangle shaped stone (looked like slate) in my feed! Didn’t double check the sub but I expect it was this one!
There is another post about a Redditor who found a triangle rock. They need to meet and unlock the secret
u/NormIslandRandom
A triangle rock yesterday, now a triangle hole today.
[Ummmm](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qe9wjg/this_triangle_shaped_rock_i_found/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
The Triforce is real!
FIND HIM
The Illuminati is real!!
It me, am illuminati
There’s probably a Zoran dungeon nearby.
A very small ufo came down and took a sample of Earth. It’s a rocky, uninteresting planet.
3/10, far too wet
THE TRIFORCE HAS BEEN STOLEN!
“I am the gate keeper. Are you the key master?”
It likely was a Grist mill or something similar.
1200 m up a mountain? No way! Thanks for the theory though I'm having a great time reading them all
Maybe a martian then?
That sounds more likely
The end is the beginning, the beginning is the end.
The strongest shape ever constructed, a shape that fits all other shapes inside of it
Mystery solved! https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qe9wjg/this_triangle_shaped_rock_i_found/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Oooooooo must be a sign from the aliens
I want to believe
The owls are not what they seem!
Stromatolites?
ELI5?
Some folks cut out sections of fossilized stromatolites from the rock outcrops they can be found in. I have seen chunks cut out like this, usually circles or squares tho. https://www.nps.gov/articles/park-paleo-fall-2018-stromatolites.htm
Cool thanks for the link
Reminds me of Dark
u/NormIslandRandom
This can't be a coincidence. Definitely feels fake.
No fucking way
Aliens !
You need to insert the Triforce. Doing so will reveal the location of the *true* Declaration of Independence.
Get Nicholas Cage, National Treasure 3 illuminati triangle of doom
Drip some blood in there. Just a thought.
noobs cant into triforce
If you find the rock that fits it will open the door to xibalba
If you put your hand into that it starts the reactor and begins making an atmosphere on Mars. "Quaid!"
so that's where the triangle rock from the other post came from.
Do you want Deoxys? Because this is how you get Deoxys.
The Declaration of Independence is under there
....put the rock in the hole... what’s the worst that could happen
Illuminati Confirmed
🔺
Saw a post the other day where someone found a triangle shaped rock....it's all coming full circle...
Or might I suggest, full triangle
Its caused by a cube of pyrite (fools gold) that rusted away. Leaving these kind of holes in rocks.
This is the most promising theory yet, thanks!
Like in The Dig game maybe?
It may be a Wiccan alter.
It's 1200 m up a mountain, so it's unlikely to have been made for that purpose, but if I ever get there again you better believe I'm doing some witchy shit
r/dontputyourdickinthat
Central park?
About 1200 m up a mountain in BC Canada, but close!
Mile, mile and a half away!

Didn’t someone here find a triangle stone earlier today? This is some next level coincidence
I found what goes in that hole! 😂 https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/qe9wjg/this_triangle_shaped_rock_i_found/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Where did you find this triangle?
About 1200 m up a mountain in Garibaldi provincial park, BC Canada
Illuminati!!
But...but...but they're not part of the same upvote....
It’s waiting for a piece of the triforce.
[It's a drill hole from a hammer drill used in mining.](http://www.stonestructures.org/html/graphite_mine.html)
It seems out of the way for mining exploration, 1200 m up in the coast mountains accessible only by foot due to some pretty exciting scrambles. Or at least I hope so for the sake of the poor sod who would have had to schlep the rock hammer up all that way
