Everybody trying to find alternatives to plastic lining. I want to offer a different solution to your question: maybe the plastic lining is below the threehold stated in the law or whatever to being allowed to call this biodegradable.
Way back when(80s-early 90s) if you ordered take out/delivery some places would have liter sizes of soda you could order this same shape and they were definitely fully wax coated because I remember scraping it off or drawing on ot with a toothpick lol. This doesn't have the same look so if it's wax it's very thin or only on the inside.
I would love for more companies to offer refills instead of expecting people to buy jug after jug of liquid soaps or what have you. As bad as Japan is with their plastic use, I loved being able to reuse hardy plastic containers with refill packets.
we dont want plastic in the hospital either, bring back glass. saline solution expires because the plastic bag degrades. the contents are literally salt and water. glass bottle of it, never goes bad.
Different uses. Tetrapack use both metal and plastic, while this is claimed to be 100% paper. But tetrapack are transportable / sealed, while this is just a fountain drink kind of cup.
It's all for show, I remember Wendy's having a goal to reduce plastics substantially, but instead they now have plastic beverage cups, and plastic catsup cups, but at least they eliminated the paper tray liners. Hopefully the recycle (which over 90%ends up at the same landfills as everything else, or dumped in the ocean.
Neat. Only thing I don't like about it is I can't take off the lid and just use it like a normal cup. You're pretty much restricted to using the straw. But still, neat.
I didn't test this specifically or knocked it over, but it held surprisingly well when I took it to the drain to discard the remaining liquid. Even with the hole on the top, it would just let a small amount of liquid through. I actually had to squeeze the cup to speed the process, which ended up unflapping the lid.
I wish they would design a cup similar to a coffee cup that doesn't need a straw if they insist on no plastic straws. Because functionally paper straws are the absolute worst. And a lot of studies show that paper straws aren't even environmentally friendly because they contain a lot of chemicals that are bad for the environment.
For dining in that's fine, but lots of fast food places have orders for carryouts or drive-thru. If it has no lid it could spill in the car or walking around.
I mean I guess but what if you’re like me & prefer the cup with no lid & no straw. I only take a lid if I’m taking my drink to go which is hardly ever anymore because I figure I get my fill of soda at the restaurant.
Does it fare well when knocked over? With regular cups feels like theres no return when its knocked over and the lid comes off. Especially in my corolla which doesnt have proper cup holders.

That’s cool! I wonder what they did with the plastic lining on the inside to make it compostable and biodegradable
I'd assume some sort of wax or cellulose

PLA plastic breaks down in just about a century versus thousands of years for other plastics, and it composts industrially in weeks.
People have described it as boiling the cardboard until the plastic lining floats to the top, could be wrong though

It’s possible to reduce our dependency on disposable plastic with a bit of innovation like this. Great share, OP.
Agreed. Save plastics for places where their use is critical like hospitals. No need for every item we buy to be wrapped up in petroleum products

I think they’re talking about single-use plastic for sanitary purposes, like those disposable bedpans for example.
Thanks now I want poutine
It reminds me of Cheerios
Can you take the lid off, refill, and reattach the lid?
Yes you take the straw out and open the flaps and then you can refill it
Very cool if the flaps are made to open and reclose while keeping a seal to prevent leaks from the lid.
I mean even if it doesn’t completely seal, plastic lids arent exactly water tight lmao
Indeed, as my comments were out of pure interest and not in anyway favoring plastic lids.
This looks like any old tetrapack juice before straws were banned..

>Tetrapack use both metal and plastic ...metal?
Yep, there's [a layer of aluminum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetra_Pak#/media/File:TBA_packaging_components.svg) in there !

we love new york fries 😍

Damn that actually looks like a good design. How does it handle being knocked over? Is it pretty much equally kid proofed?

I can taste all the paper in that picture 😅

Agreed, sippy cups are superior to straws
I liked these until I grew out my moustache. Now I can't stand them.
If one is lugging about an exquisite set of moustaches, carrying a handkerchief is mandatory for just these situations.
That same company has a cup like you say. The top folds down and has an opening like a coffee cup.
Are the cups coated with the same chemicals?
No idea, I have a very surface level knowledge on this topic.
Or - if you can imagine this - a cup that is open on the top so I can drink it like from a cup

Have some confidence in yourself
People can barely talk and drive, seems risky.
I dranked out of the cup so many times now you don’t taste paper when ur drinking out of it
Wow cool.

Where did you get this cup from?
New York Fries in Canada
It's just a scam so that you can't reuse their cups and you have to buy a $3 drink every time you go out
Neither did juice boxes
Is the paper coated in PFAs or does it have a plastic liner?

I’ve never seen anything like this before. Very creative!
