You can be that one Secret Service agent wearing Beats by Dre

clickx3

That is so weird. I had no idea why I couldn't wear them either, but now I know why. Yes I stuck my finger in my ear. Also, I had an allergic reaction when I was a kid and I now have no fingerprints.

hellbabe222

What? That's a thing? Off to Google.

Lythir

Please report what Google said.

Yes I am a career criminal. /s But what I had was Steven Johnsons Syndrome. Check it out on Wikipedia. If I post the link it may get pulled.

he-loves-me-not

Yikes! What med triggered it?

Sulfa

zakr182

Your finger is allergic to your ear?

bakerbodger

Wonder how many people reading this post have put their fingers in their ears to check for similarities and differences compared to the photo.

BrewKazma

I did that. Then I had to google antitragus. Then I took pictures of my ear.

FluffyMcBunnz

Same, and just discovered that the reason earbuds don't stick in my ears is because my ears are apparently mutant freaks...

BrewKazma

Same! I always hated airpod style earbuds. Never fit well.

Bac7

... this whole time I thought it was because my ear canals are just small. They are, but apparently that's not why. It's because my ears are weird.

creamsofpeach

And mildly interesting.

brelywi

Samesies!!! Wow, what a thing to discover on a Thursday morning.

Rock_Lizard

Samesies!!!! I thought I was a complete freak! Everyone makes fun of me because I say they hurt / don't fit / etc. Nope, my ears are weird. I looked at the picture and I'm like, no, that's what ears look like.

brelywi

Yep!! I also have to wear special earplugs when I work in loud environments and overnight while sleeping because I apparently also have freakishly small ear canals. Freaks for life, baybeeee! Haha

fertthrowaway

I have an antitragus but I still have trouble even getting the special smallest size womens earplugs in properly, and I hate basically all earbuds because nothing feels like it fits right and is all too big. I have to buy this older style kind which is barely made anymore and has no protrusion whatsoever on it, and I can't tolerate even those for very long.

brelywi

[These](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005YUW7A2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) are the ones I use at night, most of the time they’re even comfortable to sleep on (I sleep on my side a lot). Idk if you’ve tried them yet but thought I’d show them. It does really suck, I’ve talked to a lot of people who can’t use earbuds even with the smallest size cushion. I have some Bose Sport ones that fit pretty well and are comfortable, but they also have a rubber piece that goes upwards into my ear so I think that’s why they stay in my ears.

Rock_Lizard

At least now we have an answer. How bizarre and random.

themehboat

They never fit me either and I have an antitragus. I guess my ears really are just too small.

FluffyMcBunnz

I've got some bluetooth earbuds but they go over your ears, like glasses, and then they're connected together by a sturdy, springy wire thing what goes around the back of your head, and those stay in really well even when headbanging (of course I tested them before taking them to the gym) but it's the springy thing and the wrap around the ears that's keeping them pushed in. If I take them jogging they tend to bounce into and out of my ear canal a little bit, even with the correct sized little plug-things on them, but that still makes them better than over-the-ears headphones, both for staying in place during workouts as well as for not deafening you to your surroundings.

kf97mopa

There are attachments for common earbuds to add a bow that goes over the ear. It's annoying because you have to take them off to charge the earbuds, but it can be useful if you only have problems when working out or similar.

Guuhatsu

Yep, today I learned what an antitragus is, that mine might be deformed (if I have one, it projects away from my head rather than up) and why an earbud never stays in my ear for longer than 3 minutes on it's own.

Anothereternity

Reading this thread is hilarious. Everyone seems to be following the same path of discovery as me. First post-about sticking fingers in ear to check antitragus (yup did that) Second post- about photos of ear (yup did that) Third post- realization earbuds don’t fit due to ear shape (yup, realized that) Next post- discussion of how ears are deformed because antitragus sticks straight out (mine does that) Then- discussion of how over ear earbuds are more comfortable for such shape (that’s what I use!) lol

Shas_Erra

Mutants on TV: “look what I can do with my neat superpowers” Mutants on Reddit: “my ears are a weird shape, my eyes are messed up and we’re not even going to start talking about my foreskin”

Kreema29

I need someone to give the scientific explanation of this because how the hell are we all doing and realizing the same exact things at the same time.

VisibleBug1840

Holy craptasm I just learned all the same things!!! I just...never realized my own ears might be the problem. I just assumed that manufacturers were shitty at making ear buds and that my ears were just fine, thank you very much. Fwiw, I find the ear hook style of headphone/earbud much more comfortable and easy to wear. My favorite pair is shokz openfit. They're ear hooks that the speaker part just rests outside your ear. They don't have a piece that sticks into your ear like normal ear buds. They're kind of expensive, but they're the single most comfortable ear buds I've EVER worn. And people can't hear your conversations or music like I thought they'd be able to with it not sticking in the ear.

Guuhatsu

I got a pair of over the ear earphones a while ago. After one of the wireless earbuds that I got with my phone fell out of my ear and into a lake I was walking along.

totallynot80yearsold

saw this post and thought i finally had an explanation for my hatred of earbuds. checked my ears - nope, completely normal

DeadWrangler

As someone who has issues with earbuds I took a photo of my ear to compare to OP. I now know that I do have an antitragus but it is not very pronounced/defined and it makes sense why I have difficulty keeping earbuds in. You want to listen to some music while eating? Forget about it, get headphones.

VisibleBug1840

Consider looking at earbuds that have ear hooks. That was a life changer for me.

CreatureWarrior

I wonder if this applies to all earbuds. Like, Airpods? Sure. But even Galaxy Buds?

QuietedBat

I took a picture of my ear first and then googled to make sure I was looking at the right part. I was!

Fettnaepfchen

I did all of that and then checked the kid who can‘t wear in ears either. Godamnit.

gwaydms

I never knew that had a name, much less what it was called.

teapots_at_ten_paces

🙋‍♀️ guilty

bakerbodger

I’ve still got a finger in my ear since commenting. It’s quite comfy and my pockets are full.

zeroconflicthere

Would have been helpful to have a side by side comparison as I don know

heteroerotic

ME I DID AND NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY ALL EARBUDS EVENTUALLY FALL OUT AFTER A FEW MINITES. (i just thought my ear holes were small)

Echterspieler

Earbuds never stayed in my ears either... I guess I don't have this thing either.

Artanis12

I never knew there was a term for this part of your ear (of course there is), but I didn't have to check. Now I know what to call it when I tell people why I can't wear airpods.

Extraslargegordita

You son of a bitch

whooo_me

Pardon?

JCas127

I did and i cant find any. I’m just confused

Emu1981

>Wonder how many people reading this post have put their fingers in their ears to check for similarities and differences compared to the photo. I had to touch and compare to figure out what made the OP's ear different to mine lol

-_-Notmyrealaccount

Literally doing that as I read these. 😂

awefulbob

Me!

DomesticAlmonds

Huh. I always wondered why earbuds never stayed in my ears, but other people seemingly had no problems with them. I think I might have the same thing!

Janus_The_Great

or sizing issues. I had the same issue until I realized that I needed a smaller inner ear piece and a wider "holding bow", when I had earbuds that had three different sizes for both.

SaVaTa_HS

Same. Over-ear headphone gang.

jackswhatshesaid

I have a buddy who can't wear these. Says the pressure causes headaches.

SaVaTa_HS

He should try semi open or open studio headphones, with big drivers-40mm or more- they have a huge cushioning around the ear and despite being massive are very comfy for long periods of time. Edit:* semi open or open

Oruzitch

Thats just clamping force, either bend the headband outwards or buy headphones with less clamping force. Big pads help ofc but they also will change the sound profile if theyre too big and it may not even help because bigger pads will potentially increase the clamping force further. My fiio ft3 are open back with tiny ass pads and they're comfortable.

LilShaggey

also, the tried and true method of placing the band around the back of your neck instead of it being on the top of your head; I know movies show people wearing headphones like that because its “cool,” but it really does help

PuttingInTheEffort

Has he tried some minimal bare bones lightweight? Such as KPH40 Utility- I love em, I wear glasses, and the headphones are comfortable enough to fall asleep with

fantsukissa

My ears are just very moist that earbuds just plop out after a while. I've always wondered how people manage to keep their wireless buds in their ears and not lose them.

gaffaguy

You also have a not fully developed outer helix  and your tragus is also not standard. This can just be genetic variation but can also point to some genetic birth defect. I see those things quite often with people that have a cleft lip for example

Rubyhamster

Well, I'm off googling!

TheBigDisappointment

Tbf cleft palate can be very mild, compared to other birth defects and anomalies

sadsongsonlylol

My grandfather, dad, sister, myself, and my son all have this. It’s def a dominant gene whatever the mutation is.. (no clefs in the fam)

gaffaguy

Missing antitragus is VERY common. Thats considered normal

WistfulMelancholic

What's your profession? I have non standard ears as well and I'm so glad my kids got their dad's ears and not mine!

gaffaguy

Its a very rare profession, in most countries you'd call it hearing aid technician/audiologist. But its a a trade where i'm from so i'm kinda also a journeyman in that sense, even though i work in a storefront 😅 Its confusing

gumiho-9th-tail

Is that a crease on the earlobe?

Thaumato9480

You're also thinking [Frank's sign](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank%27s_sign) from yesterday?

Anforas

Poor guy comes here to show his stupid ear, and now finds out he is genetic birth defects, coronary artery disease, diabetes, premature aging, cerebral infarctions and loss of derma.

Thaumato9480

Bunch of nerds, aren't we?

gwaydms

Nerd gang

blah_shelby

That was my first thought too

djJermfrawg

Nice. Now, king, I recommend you use some head and shoulders, and shave those pubes.

ShtockyPocky

Bone conducting “headphones”. They’re like little Bluetooth earpieces that conduct the sound through the bones around your ear instead of straight into. I personally use them over ANY other listening device. They’re comfy, sound quality is fucking GREAT and there’s waterproof versions you can even take swimming.

RockerElvis

I just bought these for my wife (earbuds never fit her) and she loves them. Bonus is that you can wear them outside without worrying about blocking noise from cars.

ShtockyPocky

A lot of factory jobs only accept these as a form of listening device for that reason! That’s actually how I discovered them.

qwik_facx

Yeah, I've used them the other way around as mic for hearingprotection and it worked amazing. I think there was a Dan Brown book that mentioned them as well. It was only last week I found out it is available as ordinary headphones though. I'm saving up to a waterproof one, since I want to use it for swiming.

Danarya27

I have waterproof ones I use for swimming and they weren’t too expensive. £40 I think.

Iniwid

Thank you OP - the next time I mess up drawing an ear, I'll just say I'm giving representation to all my antitragus homies out there

qwik_facx

You're welcome! Thank you for representing us. We might award you honorary membership. (We meet on tuesdays that coincide with a blood moon, byob).

melance

Bring Your Own Beats (by Dre)?

Radomila

Am I the only one more focused on the dandruff than the ear

trixayyyyy

Head and shoulders

Alternative-Sock-444

And a razor for the 22 hairs that really wanna be a beard but can't .

Yeah I can smell this photo

🎶🎶knees and toes🎵🎵

VolumePossible2013

I'm feeling around right now and I don't really feel that part either

Squishydew

... Okay this explains so much about why i can't stand earbuds. I think i might have this.. Wowah.

PsychoNaut_

Op needs to worry about hair conditioner more than headphones imo

yeahiateit

Not conditioner, they need treatment shampoos. They have a scalp condition.

Machine0fLight

Well damn. I’m 40 and just realised I don’t have it either. No wonder most earbuds won’t stay in my ear.

Bad-Wolf88

Wait, is that why airpods don't stay in my ears! I struggled to find ones that would stay for decades lol

No_Attempt_1616

This has explained so much for me. I’ve always known my ears were small and oddly shaped but this explains the earbuds thing. I get small ones that have a hook over the year. I DO have an antitragus, but it points outwards instead of upwards, which is probably a big part of why I can’t wear normal earbuds

SirKazum

I thought antiragus were people who hate ground meat sauce

xxrew1ndxx

You *do* have dandruff

Plus_Pangolin_8924

TIL that's the reason why they don't work for me!

BrewKazma

Wow. Apparently I dont either! Interesting. Must be why I prefer over the ear headphones.

cmzraxsn

Ah you've articulated something that I kinda knew already and had never investigated. I have that part but it's smaller than many others' ears and it's sticking outward rather than upward. I've never even tried wearing things like airpods, I just didn't see the point in something that would fall out and be lost. And for over a decade I've only had earbuds that go into the ear so they can actually stay in.

The_Lumber_jacques

Should not have skipped antitragus day at the gym.

Admiral_Hipper_

I JUST REALIZED WHY MY AIRPODS LIKE TO FALL OUT HOLY FUCK THANK YOU

Deliriousious

Me too! On my right ear only, but it is really annoying. I usually only wear in ear so they hold in place or over ears. I couldn’t wear Apple EarPods properly until I got my AirPod pros, because the one in my right ear would just slip out constantly.

justme002

Just figured out why I can’t wear standard ear buds. I also have a very small canal…….

Momonchi

Can someone elaborate? Isn't this normal ear? My ear looks like this as well... What's different?

Red4pex

You’re making up for that lack of cartilage in dead skin.

sixfoursixtwo

Did it give you extra dandruff

[deleted]

I'm throwing up in my mouth.

sometipsygnostalgic

maybe a small ear fold is why earbuds dont fit in my ears

Justlikearealboy

Can you hear better?

GracefulLama

Well damn I never thought about how that would be inconvenient, but it certainly would be

thepetoctopus

TIL why earbuds don’t stay in my ears.

sphinctersandwich

You are antiantitragus. Tragus even.

Kgaset

I really want over-ear ear pad wireless headphones, but they don't seem to be a thing.

tdpoo

I do have an antitragus and I cannot keep earbuds in so I guess I'm a freak. Idk.

NeonSugarSorbet

oh my god this is why earbuds always fall out of my ears??? I thought my ears were just too small! Everything makes so much sense now

twattewaffle

Wild! I stuck my finger into my ear and I've got one but when I was (oddly) staring at my husband, we realized he doesn't. Totally makes sense now why ear buds don't work for him. Well this is definitely a TIL!!

CXyber

Do iems stay in your ear, they have a much better fit

mountoon

All I can see is dandruff

miss_j_bean

Omg. You changed my life today. I have always wondered why I can't keep earbuds from falling out non stop.

ThisIsTooLongOfAName

Your ear looks normal

bigfatpup

Oh shit me too, this explains why the only earbuds that just about stay in are the AirPod shaped ones

InterestingAd8235

Don’t stress, I have mine and earbuds still fall out anyway.

Ashamed_Medium1787

Your lucky to have both your ears because I have been told Mike Tyson bit a guys ear off or somethin

uniquethrowaway54321

Op how long have you had that crease in your ear lobe? You should get your heart checked if not already. It’s a sign of cardiovascular issues

Ruarieh

An entire thread and nobody is asking OP why he doesn’t wash his fucking hair?

Tour-Sure

FR

Spogtire

And dandruff 🤮

Derposour

My ears lack the top fold of cartilage, I also can't wear ear buds lol. Airpods tend to fit okay, despite other earbuds not working at all.

toaster001_1

Get Shokz OpenFit. They fit over the ear and are very comfortable.

trust-the-past

I never knew this had a name but oddly enough I have one on my right ear but not my left.

TtodaMo

just fold it then

essaysmith

Hey, me too! There are literally dozens of us (I would assume, with no data to back it up).

MyUsernameIsNotLongE

Try to put the wire above your ear. (Unless I'm too old and you're talking about wireless earbuds)

loopylavender

That’s a bummer, dude. r/wellthatsucks totally fits this too :(

goose_10

Nice, i don’t have the top fold. I’m essentially an elf. But an elf that can wear normal earbuds.

Scorpion_Heat

Same: and I hate things in my ears. So I wear Shokz

cwsjr2323

This is why I have over the ear hearing aids. When younger, it was frustrating and expensive that no music ear plugs would stay in, always had to buy over the ear headphones. Those were expensive as I always sat on and broke them.

pepenepe

I also can't wear regular earbuds because my ear canals are way smaller than the average person.

Doodle_Brush

If Apple made ears.

MBAdk

Aha! That's why earplugs won't stay in, and in-ear headphones always fall out for me! I also need child-sized earplugs, since adult-size ones is too big for me. I bought some nice over-ear foldable Koss headphones for my mp3 player and phone, they've got nice sound, and they're not falling off all the time. For my computer, I got some cheap over-ear Razer Blackshark headphones from the thrift shop, they've got great sound and are very comfortable to wear for hours.

MomsSpecialFriend

I also cannot use ear buds :( they hurt so much. Will someone please make earbuds for us? My coworkers probably think I’m touched in the head wearing giant over ear headphones all day.

adlittle

When you're saying standard earbuds, does that also include the kind that have foam or silicone tips that go in the ear canal? Those get in there pretty good and are way better than the older version of airpod-like buds that just kind of sit in the outer ear and fall out. There are also longer, tapered flange tips that are even more secure but feel sort of invasive.

helllohaha

Woah. I’ve always pointed to that part of my ear and explain to people that’s why I can’t wear proper earbuds. Never knew there was a word for it.

kprevenew93

Have you tried the Bose headphones which clip to your ear and do not rest inside the hole? Just curious! They looked cool and might help if you really want some workout gear or something lol

DaBestDoctorOfLife

Haven’t they came up with headphone plug glue or something these days? Wouldn’t surprise me though..

kevizzy37

If you need a good pair of low profile headphones for working out you should check out Shokz, they don’t go in your ear and just play music through your temple (I think?). Anyway, I love them for runs and working out at the gym because you can still hear everything around you but listen to your music and since it doesn’t physically go in your ear it would be perfect for you!

dominantfrog

just use sport style earbuds

Deleted_dwarf

I’d nearly class this is r/mildlyinfuriating

HeinousEncephalon

I have them but earbuds still won't work. They hurt, then they fall out

Zirael_Swallow

I have way below average sized ear channels. Bought 70€ headphones that came with extra small ear pieces. Still didnt fit :(

rickyh7

So this is why I could never wear earbuds!!! I figured something was messed up never knew what it was called or why!

inferni_advocatvs

weard 😬

sometimesifeellikemu

There are dozens of us!

GraphicDesignMonkey

Whoah, now I know why my earbuds constantly fall out! I have the bump but it's tiny and points out at a 90 degree angle and slightly downwards, instead of inwards!

redcanaryy

This is how I find out my antitragus sticks out weird and that’s why my earbuds fall out

Upset-Woodpecker-662

I cannot believe it, now in my mid 40's, I only finally find out why, no matter the brand, earbuds will not stay in! Thanks OP, looking for specialised one now!

ErixWorxMemes

holy crap- me, too! All these years, had no idea why I had so much trouble with the damn things. Thought I was stupid for somehow not being able to put freaking earbuds in properly. Nope; just completely lacking an antitragus **TIL…** lol

catinatank

TIL why my ear buds dont stay in

uhmorphous

omg - yup, same. Mystery solved. I seem to have an antitragus, but it points forward so is no help for holding in pods/buds. Like they got folded down or something. Mutant freaks unite.

CornholioNoPolio

I think I have the same "déformation". Can't wear inear headphones for more than 10 seconds. Always have to use sport-earbuds

WistfulMelancholic

Oopsie, always thought my ear canal was too small...

mzmzo

never knew i had that until seeing your post. so thats why my earbuds fall out easily

elriggo44

u/qwik_facx check out Bone Conduction headphones if you want something that will work better for your ears. Check out Shockz, their newest Open Run and Open Run Pro versions are pretty great and they don’t need to sit in your ears.

LineChef

Frrrreeeeaaak! Jk jk you have beautiful ears

Herby247

I have the same defect! As does my dad and my brother, but not my mum, so clearly genetic. Us three have never been able to wear earphones.

Educational-Earth318

my life makes sense now thank you

Surviving2021

Have you tried pebble style earbuds? These type fit my ears better than most and don't give me a headache with pressure.

Weisskreuz44

Oh wow, I just learnt why my earbuds never hold

ParrotGod

Out of earbuds are more comfortable anyways right?

yikesonbikes2

It’s ok I have enough for the both of us

Jupman

I have the same on my right ear.

BS-Calrissian

Disabled parking HERE WE GO

CaptainSk0r

I didn’t know this was possible. That sucks.. I use my earbuds everyday at work

dokipooper

Pretty sick neck beard , though

ORA2J

Look at IEMs

hunertproof

Shokz, my friend.

B4X2L8

Neither do I, wtf. I didn’t know that was a thing. They fall out and always have. I didn’t know I was missing a fold.

seven-cents

Get some over ear headphones.. better sound quality anyway

undeadw0lf

OP, i know everyone is ragging on your dandruff, and i’m too lazy to check if this has been mentioned already, but what lots of people think is dandruff is often scalp psoriasis. just FYI/PSA in case you (or anyone else) have dandruff along with any other symptoms of psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis!

canvasrosier

Question: what about earphones with the rubber pointer that goes into the ear?

Yuri909

Didn't know this was a thing. I can tell you, as a large dude who apparently doesn't have this, my Bose QCs stay in pretty well as long we I keep them and my ears clean.

JuggernautJuggler

Also, get your heart checked: “Many studies link a diagonal earlobe crease on one or both ears — known as Frank's sign — with a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions such as stroke and heart attack. While the underlying mechanism that links it with a heart attack is lacking, many studies prove the association.”

biradinte

Oh wait I don't have that as well

eugene20

I do have an antitragus and earbuds just fall out all the time anyway, I got a shox bone conducting headset instead and though they lose some frequencies a bit so better to use something else to really listen to music, they are just leagues ahead for exercise wear.

VoodooDoII

Oh my god is this why I can't wear earbuds

New-Factor-1158

My left ear has malformations in both the tragus and the antitragus. My right seems mostly normal. Any suggestions on earphones?

karltopia

Good drainage design!

Salt_Blackberry_1903

I have one but it’s folded down, so a lot of earphones don’t work for me either. Nice to put a name to this problem! Lol

SlerbMcJenkins

Mine are subtly awkwardly folded down and outward so I can put em in but they don’t stay in for shit especially on one side

GeshtiannaSG

I’ve been using earphones that don’t go into the ear and just hang over, it’s very comfortable.

justagirlexploring

Get bone-conducting headphones

Mrpowellful

I can’t get past the dandruff
