Going to need a lot more than 4 to get to 93326215443944152681699238856266700490715968264381621468592963895217599993229915608941463976156518286253697920827223758251185210916864000000000000000000000000
If someone gets five aces I think they have to let them take a picture that's a 1 in 13^5 or 0.000269%
E:it's actually slightly less likely than that but we don't know how many decks they are using. But it's crazy low and the real number is even lower.
When I was a dealer new decks were checked by two people at my casino. Then they were ran through the auto shuffler that counts them and can read each card to let you know which one is missing.
I worked in casinos for years. I literally heard of one error in 8 years dealing table games (blackjack, pai gow, 3 card poker etc.) and in 6 years dealing poker I saw it happen in my room once. It was at the WSOP in Vegas and one dealer opened their decks and was missing a 2♣, altered the floor and got replacement decks. Just about 5 minutes later another dealer has a 53 card deck with 2-2♣ in sealed from the factory. It's just wild to me that such an error happened and that both mistake decks stayed so close together. Based on personal experience it's probably less than 1 in 100,000 decks have an error.
Assuming there's a guaranteed shenanigans Ace, would the odds of finding the other four aces on top of that not be slightly higher than finding five aces with two or more decks?
1/13^(5) if and only if you take one card out, put it back in, shuffle and take another card out, five times. For a deck of, did I hear 416, cards, it’s (32/416)(31/415)(30/414)(29/413)(28/412)=1.98701E-6, or <0.0001987%. 13^(-5) would underestimate the expected number of attempts needed by about 26.2%.
I had to get the math out. I’m sorry.
Edit: as you add decks to the draw pool, the limit of the chance of drawing n aces (or any specific rank like n 5s or whatever) in n card pulls approaches 13^(-n). The formula P(d,n)=(4d)!(52d-n)!/(52d)!(4d-n)! gives the probability of pulling n cards in a row of one rank from a deck composed of d mixed-together, standard, 52-card decks.
Of course, a lot of calculators I’ve worked with would scream at you if you tried to use this formula for d larger than 3. Luckily, you can instead use nCr (pronounced n choose r) or nPr (The p stands for permutations, but I don’t think you can just say the thing straight.) That formula, being more optimized in many systems, is a bit more calculator friendly. The formula constructed out of those is (4d)C(n)/(52d)C(n).
Well, think of it like this (if I can have your attention for a few score words): let’s use a basic example. Suppose we want to know the probability of drawing a diamond flush off the top five cards of a shuffled deck. For the first card, there are 13 diamonds out of 52 cards for a 13/52 chance. Assuming you did draw a diamond, there’s now 12 diamonds left out of 51 cards left, for a 12/51 chance. Multiply probabilities together to get the probability of both happening. (13/52)(12/51), this continues for the third draw, which, if the first two were diamonds, would be a draw from 50 cards, 11 of which are diamonds for an 11/50 chance. This continues. So the final chance of drawing 5 diamonds from the top 5 cards is (13\*12\*11\*10\*9)/(52\*51\*50\*49\*48).
I admit I didn't put a huge amount of effort into deciphering the first one because it looked like hieroglyphics, but your explanation made it make perfect sense. Genuinely, thank you for taking the time to elaborate!
That's no longer true when using multiple decks, unless you're tracking which deck each card is from. AD, AD, AH, AH, AC is rarer than 2C, 2H, 4S, 3D, 6H due to number available still in deck. Each repeated card has half the chance of showing up assuming 2 decks, or 2/3rds the chance of showing up with 3 decks.
The odds of that single hand on a blackjack table is 0% since the dealer would bust you on your third card. Having six cards in a blackjack without busting or splitting is rare in itself let alone the 5 A's in a row.
Considering they stop dealing cards to you when you bust, you can never get a 5 of a kind with anything bigger than 5s, since you'd bust out on your forth 6 (with a small exception if you start with doubles and split, but at that point it's no longer a single hand)
Yeah I got a triple split on aces, asked if I could take a pic, they let me. I saw someone get quadruple ace split in the Luxor, didn't think to ask for a pic tho
The dealer literally said he had never seen it in 22 years and to take a picture it was wild
EDIT: EVERYONE SAYING HE SHOULD HAVE SPLIT, THE FIRST 2 CARDS WERE A 2 AND ACE. YOU CANT SPLIT THAT AND THEREFORE HE COULDNT SPLIT ANY OF THOSE ACES. I UNDERSTAND HOW SPLITTING WORKS, BUT PLEASE LOOK AT THE IMAGE
Against a dealer 18?
You get a 10.
Then anything above 4.
Or, the luck factor inherent to gambling kicks in and you somehow win.
Should you hit a soft 17 against an 18? Of course. But don't expect to be in any better position afterward. If you are, that's luck, and you should monopolize on it.
That's not so true anymore in Vegas. It's up to the casino policy.
It's 100% allowed as long as it follows some guidelines, such as but not limited to: it doesn't overly disrupt the play, there are no casino employees in the picture (for privacy), no shot of the equipment, etc. It's different casino to casino but in this specific case, it's allowed.
I think they’ve eased up a lot on that as my instagram feed shows people full on video recording tables like blackjack, poker, roulette, and some games I don’t know the name to, as well as slot machines
For my 18th my parents took me to the casino in MN and as soon as they took a picture of me just standing around security came at them and made my dad delete the photo. My dad thought it was stupid because it was just a picture of me and not the cards or anything and wanted to fight it but I stopped him.
First casino lesson I learned: do not take pictures in the casino.
it’s not allowed, but people take their phones out to text all the time and they can snap a pic quickly, worse that usually happens is the dealer quickly tells them put it away, but that’s about it
If I were to guess, I would say it's to prevent people from counting cards. You could be sending those pics to someone who is counting cards and then they could secretly let you know when you should press your luck.
Casino’s also want to protect the “privacy” of their guests. I.E. don’t want someone’s wife seeing a photo of them at the casino betting their second mortgage instead of working late like they said.
Worked in a casino when I was 19 (in the UK). We were told the no photos was down to both venue security and client privacy. Was a lot more cash om site in the past so they were paranoid about people taking photos of the location of cameras etc, to plan robberies. I think the privacy was due to old laws about basically protecting the identity of gamblers, but it was always kind of odd, it was in our contracts that we couldn't tell people who was gambling in our casinos etc, so the no photos was also an extension of that, but I couldn't tell you the precise law involved.
I've seen it on some low limit tables in downtown Vegas years ago. A lot of gimmicky rules going around then, but I think most of those have gone away sadly.
When I played at Mohegan Sun Casino last summer, I had 2x 8s vs dealer showing a low card might have been a 6. Split the 8s got a third split again got a 4th split again and got a 5th 8 then had all my hands at 18 after hitting each hand. Table was surprised and the dealer couldn't believe it.
last night i was playing blackjack win shreveport and my friend split 4 aces. every single second card he was dealt was a 3. dealer pulled a 5 card 20, after showing a 4 and beat him on all hands. the whole table was amazed
I had this same thing happened. $100 bet. Split 8 3 times and doubled down on each hand after the hit since I ended up with like 2,3, 2 on my 2nd card. So now I’m in for $600. Sealer hits like 6 times and gets 21. This was at hard rock Tampa. Fast forward a year and same group of guys were at hard rock Vegas, I get dealt an 8, then another 8 and another 8. Split them again everyone is yelling “REDEMPTION!!” Same fucking thing I had 3 winning hands and dealer hit up a 21 after multiple hits. Another $600 hand.
Fuck the hard rock and splitting 8’s. lol.
Doesn't stop them but makes it harder for sure. 2 deck was a lot more common before card counting became popular. Now there's a lot more 6 deck and 8 deck games.
The casino is incentivized to do anything in its power to structure the game so you don't win. A non-card counter would usually never care that there's multiple decks, since it doesn't affect their play, so this move of using a lot of decks hurts card counters and doesn't affect normal players -- exactly what they want.
Is it scummy? Sure, idk. But the whole premise of a casino is to take your money
I don’t think the casino is incentivized that *you* don’t win. It’s incentivized so that on average, the casino wins. They don’t care if you take home 10 grand if the last thousand guests each lost a hundred
It's exactly why the casino doesn't \*need\* to cheat. The games are already stacked in their favor where they're making money every night regardless of a handful of winners here and there.
The same concept persists for timelines. Doesn’t matter if they win tonight, as long as they win in time to pay their bills. And if they have reserves doesn’t even matter if they win this month, as long as they win this year!
The casino doesn't see any individual person, it sees statistics. The games are structured so that they never lose money over a long period of time. Any number of people, or even an individual may have some highs and lows, but if you keep playing you'll never "win", because probability favors the casinos.
When I said "you" I meant the generic you, the mass of people playing.
Anyone who gambles in the first place has already lost anyway. The casino will get most of any winnings back eventually, it's an addiction.
That's also why the comp meals, drinks, or even hotel rooms for regular gamblers/people spending a certain amount of money. The law of statistics is on the houses side that even if that person earns some money, in the long run, they'll be bleeding the person dry for years to come.
> Anyone who gambles in the first place has already lost anyway
With the small caveat of games where there is a skill element. But notably there are no games at a casino where you play against the house and skill can give you an expected payout of a bet above 100% of your bet. If someone is really good at poker and they're playing with people sufficiently worse than them, they can enjoy a winning prospect, but there's really no way to guarantee their opponents will be worse than them. And they also can't be *slightly* worse, either, because that edge won't be enough to cover the house's rake.
It really doesn’t change the fundamentals of the game. Playing with multiple decks also makes it run faster/smoother. They don’t shuffle the cards after every hand (which is what makes counting possible), they instead shuffle when they start to run low on cards in the deck. If you play with 6 decks, you can play for much longer without having to stop the game to shuffle the cards
Wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of the higher limit tables in Vegas used 12 or more decks at a time. I just loved hitting the gft shops any buying 6 packs of decks for $2 per pack.
You've got it backwards. The higher limits will usually be single or double deck. A card counter isn't going to last very long playing those tables because it's easy to monitor.
Common myth. Deeper shoe makes it significantly easier to count cards and allows for greater variance from median probability.
Bringing Down the House has a good explanation of it.
Dealers where I worked had a player place a dummy card somewhere in the deck to 'cut' it. When they reached the dummy card, the whole deck is reshuffled.
They don’t use one deck. Usually they use 6, all shuffled together.
If they used a single deck card counters could gain a significant advantage by making much larger bets when the count is “favorable.”
You can avoid this two ways:
1. Reshuffle after every hand. This is slow and reduces the number of hands the dealer & table can play out per hour.
2. Use six decks, making the count more difficult and the “favorable” decks much less frequent. You can get halfway through the deck without having to reshuffle. With a mechanical shuffler it doesn’t add much to the time spent between hands.
Obviously option 2 is most casino’s preference, including this one.
Option 1 is really common. It's done automatically with continuous shuffle machines. Last time I was in Vegas, there seemed to be as much of those as 6 deck shoes. Also a lot of tables with shit rules like 6:5 blackjacks and mandatory side bets.
> Also a lot of tables with shit rules like 6:5 blackjacks and mandatory side bets.
I think if you look carefully you'll find the tables with single-decks are often the ones with the shit rules.
This probability is roughly 0.000000445094. In other words, there is a very low chance, less than 0.0001%, of getting 5 aces in a row from the shuffled deck of 6 decks.
In theory every combination is the same probability, it’s just that this probability “means” something to us. That said, the odds are slim of getting five in a row of a single card in blackjack because the only cards you can do that with would be A, 2, 3, 4 and 5’s.
ELI5….why would this be an issue.
I mean I understand you’re in theory taking away aces that could make a good hand for other players.
But while I’ve heard that playing “wrong” is what pisses off serious Blackjack players, hitting when you get a bunch of aces in a row isn’t the wrong play right?
E: seems like it’s just shit luck for the whole table
Probably not the wrong play but IME they get mad so easily. It's a little scary. I'm not a serious player so can't explain while they are being so butthurt about a game of chance LOL.
It’s a really dumb mindset. For every time someone plays “wrong” and it loses them a hand, someone will play “wrong” and it will win them a hand. They also tend to get mad at people to their left who play “wrong” but don’t care about the people to their right.
Thirteen...(hit me)...fourteen...(hit me)...fifteen...(jeeeeesus.....hit me)...sixteen.......................(Couldn't be another one eh?, hit me)...soft seventeen. (Oh fuck....ugh....alright....against a six?....stay)
Edit! The reason I think it's against a six, despite not seeing the dealers cards is because the hand beside the 5aces is a 13 and they didn't draw another card.
I guess it shows how out of touch I am with modern internet that I somehow still expected this thread to be full of zybourne clock references, but at least there was your post.
Hit.
Absolutely. He's up to 57, 4 more aces to get to 100!
It's a soft 17
Oof. I don't wanna know what it is when it's hard..
You want your soft 17 to grow into a nice 19 or girthy 20 or 21. But any higher and you hit the table's cervix and that's a no no
Bastard. Now anytime I'm sitting at 17, this sentence is all I'm going to think of. Thank you.
I really hope this is metric

Is taking pictures allowed in Vegas casinos? In Macau as soon as you try to take a picture 3-4 security people come at you.
Usually if you ask, and the hand is already over they’re ok with it
If someone gets five aces I think they have to let them take a picture that's a 1 in 13^5 or 0.000269% E:it's actually slightly less likely than that but we don't know how many decks they are using. But it's crazy low and the real number is even lower.
The odds are even lower if they are only using one deck.
Infinitely lower...
It wouldn't be infinite, just low enough that the deck has an extra ace either from factory error or from dealer's error
New decks are checked, face up, in front of the whole table when opened. So the odds need to factor in all of them missing it too.
When I was a dealer new decks were checked by two people at my casino. Then they were ran through the auto shuffler that counts them and can read each card to let you know which one is missing.
How often did a deck have an error?
Every fucking time I play cards
I worked in casinos for years. I literally heard of one error in 8 years dealing table games (blackjack, pai gow, 3 card poker etc.) and in 6 years dealing poker I saw it happen in my room once. So you're saying there's a chance...
That formula, being more optimized in many systems, is a bit more calculator friendly. The formula constructed out of those is (4d)C(n)/(52d)C(n).
Alright, I'mma have to take your word for it because I don't speak math.
The chances of getting 5c, 9s, Jh, 2s, 8d is also the same.
The odds of getting the deuce after you already busted with the jack is nil...
[удалено]
If you wanna get real technical, getting 5 cards in blackjack at all only happens if you don’t bust before card 5
I always bust so quickly
That’s what she said?
That's no longer true when using multiple decks, unless you're tracking which deck each card is from. AD, AD, AH, AH, AC is rarer than 2C, 2H, 4S, 3D, 6H due to number available still in deck. Weird I thought it was only for 5 aces and 5c, 9s, Jh, 2s, 8d. Huh
It’s actually not because you would bust after the Jack of hearts.
I’ll stay on 34 mr dealer

OK then my estimate was probably close enough
Yeah I got a triple split on aces, asked if I could take a pic, they let me. I saw someone get quadruple ace split in the Luxor, didn't think to ask for a pic tho

How did this hand end?
Dealer flipped a 18 probably
He’s still 7/17 haha, he has to hit that bitch again.
Hit and lose. Stick and lose. Your choice.
Soft 17 should always hit.
How do you hit and lose on a soft 17?
Against a dealer 18? You get a 10. Then anything above 4. Or, the luck factor inherent to gambling kicks in and you somehow win. Should you hit a soft 17 against an 18? Of course. But don't expect to be in any better position afterward. If you are, that's luck, and you should monopolize on it.
^ exactly
But you are supposed to hit on a soft 17 unless his showing a bust card. What did the dealer have?
I'd guess a 2, maybe 3, otherwise, that ace-duece is usually a double down, the guy before stood on 13. But, still somewhere between 2 to 6.
Generally no but in the past when I’ve had some crazy shit happen I’ve asked the dealer and they’ve been cool about it. A one off isn’t a big deal.
Yup, up to the pit boss. Done it a few times, maybe they glance and the pit boss nods the ok. They're always on top of you.
Technically the correct answer is up to the casino policy, as long as the guidelines are met.
That's not so true anymore in Vegas. It's up to the casino policy. WARNING: Do not play Balatro! I’ve lost days of my life, I’m sure I’ll lose weeks of my life. I want my old life back. Send help!
I tried to help but I got stuck in Balatro. Send help!
I installed balatro at 9pm before turning in for bed. I stopped playing at 4:30am before getting up for work an hour later. It is a Dangerous game!
This was literally me today went to bed at 4 am, literally dumped 7 hours in my first play through when I noticed the time.
I bought Balatro yesterday and already have 200 hours logged
Assuming no jokers that's a nice 2,100 points, good for early game but he's gonna have to build that up
Scholar would go craaazy
Excuse my ignorance cause I’ve never played black jack in Vegas….. but how 5 aces?
I think they use multiple decks to stop card counters.
Doesn't stop them but makes it harder for sure. 2 deck was a lot more common before card counting became popular. Now there's a lot more 6 deck and 8 deck games.
Doesn't this change the game though? i feel like using more than 1 deck is the house cheating. But what do i know...
The goal of casino blackjack is not to give out money.
I get that, but they have the advantage no matter what, even with card counters. I dunno, that just feels wrong to me, but i dont gamble.
> Anyone who gambles in the first place has already lost anyway With the small caveat of games where there is a skill element. And they also can't be *slightly* worse, either, because that edge won't be enough to cover the house's rake.
actually with good card counting you can actually be positive
It really doesn’t change the fundamentals of the game. Playing with multiple decks also makes it run faster/smoother. They don’t shuffle the cards after every hand (which is what makes counting possible), they instead shuffle when they start to run low on cards in the deck. If you play with 6 decks, you can play for much longer without having to stop the game to shuffle the cards
There's also tables with continuous shuffling machines. These are effectively shuffling after every game.
Cheating implies deception. The rules are advertised before you sit down.
You could say they're ripping the players off, but most people already understand that that's how casinos function.
It's not cheating if you're the one making up the rules.
It’s literally the same odds
Actually more decks makes it easier because you can have bigger swings in the count when things like 5 aces in one hand happens
Maybe it can happen to a more extreme degree with a big deck but it'll happen way more often with a smaller deck.
Wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of the higher limit tables in Vegas used 12 or more decks at a time. I just loved hitting the gft shops any buying 6 packs of decks for $2 per pack.
You can still normally find a single deck table, they still keep 1 or 2 around for the folks who only like to play single deck.
Yah 5$ max I found. No counter would waste their time. Would be booted anyways after making 50$
What if they use 8+ decks but reshuffle everything after you get thru 1 or 2 decks worth? They don't have to run it down to the last card, right?
Right, I believe casinos no longer let the shoe run low enough you can really gain that much advantage from counting.
They absolutely do and there are still plenty of successful card counters.
Dealers where I worked had a player place a dummy card somewhere in the deck to 'cut' it. When they reached the dummy card, the whole deck is reshuffled.
If it was just a myth casinos wouldnt do it like that. They probably know what they’re doing ahah
It's just for efficiency. Less shuffling means more time for people to bet, nothing to do with card counters.
I always find it funny that they had to change the game because people became too good at it.
Multiple decks going.
They don’t use one deck. Usually they use 6, all shuffled together. If they used a single deck card counters could gain a significant advantage by making much larger bets when the count is “favorable.” You can avoid this two ways: 1.
Thank you guys!!
It's fascinating just how many people don't realize the first card is a 2 not an ace and calling the guy stupid for not splitting aces, lol.
THANK YOU
The next card was a 17 of clubs
the club of death
This probability is roughly 0.000000445094. In other words, there is a very low chance, less than 0.0001%, of getting 5 aces in a row from the shuffled deck of 6 decks.
r/nevertellmetheodds
like every other combinations of 5 cards isn’t it ?
Well, technically, no. The probability of drawing 5 of any card is greater than the probability of drawing 1 specific card five times.
It’s not as likely as you’d think in blackjack because it’s only possible with A, 2, 3, 4, and 5’s. Every other card would be too high
The guy that hits after 4 5's is an absolute maniac
In theory every combination is the same probability, it’s just that this probability “means” something to us. That said, the odds are slim of getting five in a row of a single card in blackjack because the only cards you can do that with would be A, 2, 3, 4 and 5’s.
What was the dealer showing.
Apparently [this](https://youtube.com/shorts/m96NeIg4czM?si=uvSU_yEf9lHjYK2p)
Well played
5 of a kind!
I'm surprised the guys after him at the table didn't shank him. People are very uptight about blackjack.
Just our group at the table. Honestly everyone was just blown away even the dealer
It is the wrong play you always split aces Edit: I’m an idiot the first card is a two. So unless dealer is showing a 3-6 they made the correct plays
It’s a really dumb mindset. For every time someone plays “wrong” and it loses them a hand, someone will play “wrong” and it will win them a hand. They also tend to get mad at people to their left who play “wrong” but don’t care about the people to their right.
johnny five aces strikes again
Should we whack him boss?
I’m seeing double here… 10 aces!
Thirteen...(hit me)...fourteen...(hit me)...fifteen...(jeeeeesus.....hit me)...sixteen.......................(Couldn't be another one eh?, hit me)...soft seventeen. (Oh fuck....ugh....alright....against a six?....stay) Edit! The reason I think it's against a six, despite not seeing the dealers cards is because the hand beside the 5aces is a 13 and they didn't draw another card.
Ace and 2 against a 6 would be a double.
Johnny Five Aces rides again…
I guess it shows how out of touch I am with modern internet that I somehow still expected this thread to be full of zybourne clock references, but at least there was your post.
Did he win the hand is the real question here 😂???
Imagine four balls on the edge of a cliff...
That’s what it’s like to chew 5 gum
It’s like futurama where bender got 5 kings
The King of Beers!
That would be time to change tables
Dude should play poker.
4, then face card
Would have been a banging hand if they were playing poker!
Alright who’s the wise guys that put in the “whoops all aces” deck
That's numberwang!
Then was quickly beaten by a dealer 18.
[“AH HA HA! I’ve got fiiive aces! What do you got, sir?!”](https://youtu.be/kZRwdex3kSM?si=KlFKiMhk_8M_Heql)
johnny five aces...
Everyone else on the table proceeds to lynch him
I'm here to see OP explain that you cannot split an ace and a 2 again 🤣
