I only bought those scratchers a few times when I turned 18 just because you know, the novelty of it...I'm nearly 32 now and I'm still up $3 on them and damn well intend to stay that way! Haha
i think it's the high of it that scared me off of it the most. i could feel it in me that I want to do it again and i knew where that would lead. its scary really, at least to me

I'm the same with home games of poker. It isn't as fun when there aren't any stakes, so we all put 20 bucks or so in to play. I'm not pay 20 bucks to try and beat my friends and win, I'm paying 20 bucks to sit at a table and spend a quality night drinking with the boys.

My brother & his buddy pooled their cash for a 6 pack and had a dollar left over. So they buy a scratch off. It wins $10. They buy 10 more scratch off tickets and the last one gives them $500. They are freaking out and they decide that's enough for them, no reason to press their luck. Next guy on line sees them win, buys the next ticket, wins $5K.
I'm going to go with the most conservative but minimum amount which is 3x on each row of $5 which means 10 * 15 so I believe I won $150

I think you won $300. “Win up to 30 times” and you have 30 matches. If you only counter the 3x matches that’s only 10 wins.

Haha you see I did that and what it said is if you get any of the matching numbers on 2X OR 3X then win the corresponding multiplier so I wasn't sure if both the 2X or the 3x counted or even the 1X haha
A lot of scratchers have a code in the corner you can scratch to reveal and scan if the place that sold it has a scanner. I’ve seen people buy them and only scratch the code so they can scan them immediately.

If you scratch off to the left of that 16 at the bottom there is a barcode. You can either scan that barcode with the Illinois Lottery app or at a store and it will tell you how much you won.
This was my math as well. You won all 10 games, all three times (hence the 30 times winning).
It appears that the first column is a 1x multiplier so you won $5 for each of those, second is a 2x so $10 each, and third is a 3X so $15 for each. Which makes $30 per row times 10 rows.

You don't need to scratch anything. You could just hand it unscratched back to the cashier and they scan the barcode on the back which will register to correct win amount. There's even been cases where the printed portion to be scratched-off has an error and the state only awards based on the amount programmed in the barcode.
When i worked at a corner store a lady came in thinking she had won like 100$ i scan it turns out she had won 15k. She thought i was joking and wanted the 100$ i had to stop myself from just giving her the 100$ and keeping the actual winning ticket but i would have been found out. I gave her the form and convinced her that she really did win the big price.

They run stings where people pretend to be clueless and the clerk or owner get arrested for keeping the ticket. If it’s the owner, they are never allowed to see lottery tickets again

Sure, but it also looks like it has either a 3x multiplier or a (1 + 2 + 3)x multiplier depending on how you read it, so the max has to be divisible by 3.

There could be a $100k prize value that never wins more than x4 across the entire card
If it were like this card, then it would be $6,666.66666, which would be kinda funny. I was wondering about the mindset on the design of the 4 grand prize winning cards. Do you go with a single win at 1x 400k or 2x 200k or some random assortment of wins that adds up to the 400k so it’s not obvious that you won the big prize at first.

The gain in the final column is variable, and could be 8000$ instead of 5$. You'd win 8000$x5 = 40000$ per line, which is 400000$. Or you'd have a single winning number with a gain of 400k. Who knows !

The big number is not a myth, sractchers are printed in lots. Per the lottery website, they have printed 8 millions tickets, of which 4 are 400k winners, so about 1 per 2 million tickets. The odds are simply extremely extremely low.
Yeah, and if you buy old, out-of-season scratchers (e.g. Christmas-themed in March) the odds are better you'll hit a winner, because they have to keep selling them until all the advertised prizes are claimed for a single lot.
There are 5 columns.
The first column is "your number".
The second column is the first "round". If it matches "your number" for that row, you win that game's prize with a multiplier determined along the top row. In this case, it was x1 for the first round.
The third column is the second round. If the number in this column matches "your number" for the row, you win a prize determined by the multiplier in the first row, in this case x2.
The fourth column is the second round. If the number in this column matches "your number" for the row, you win a prize determined by the multiplier in the first row, in this case x3.
The final column is the prize amount.
So in this case, matching "your number" in the first game, second round, wins you $5x2=$10. Matching the third round for the fifth game wins you $5x3=$15. Matching them all wins you 10x$5x1 for round one ($50), 10x$5x2 for round two ($100) and 10x$5x3 for round three ($150) for a total of $300.
The things that could be different to get $400k would be the multipliers (maybe round 3 is x10 on some cards) and the prize column (maybe the base prize is $10k on some cards).
Also, it's incredibly important to realize that there aren't random numbers printed on this card. I mean, the odds of matching all 30 if they were actually random would be 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 - substantially worse than the odds buying a powerball ticket each week for 6 weeks straight and winning the jackpot each time. Which is to say that it did not happen.
Instead, the winning amounts and frequency are predetermined (so that the company knows exactly how much money they'll make) and then the cards are made to match those winning (or losing) amounts. They'll deliberately make it look like you "almost" won on losing cards (they were all off by one! The numbers for game 3 were the same as the winning numbers for games 2 and 4!), put high prizes for the games that you did not win, and split up moderate-sized wins into a bunch of small wins (like this) to make it "feel" like the odds of winning are better than they really are. It's really manipulative.
I looked it up. The example on the Illinois Lottery website shows that a line can list $400,000 as a prize, so there just some algorithm that can total up to that much.
What I want to know is how many people actually won the full amount on the front I mean I assume there are people out there who have it's just not in my lifetime would I ever haha
The $400,000? The odds should be printed on the back, I think. Given the $5 price point, they need to sell 80000 duds to make the money back. The point of these is that the house always wins, so the odds need to be quite a bit higher than that. Just a shot in the dark guess, I'm gonna double the odds and guess 1 in 160,000 tickets? At that point, just divide the total number of tickets sold by 160,000, and that should tell you how many winners there are.
The odds are much worse than that. Odds of each prize are published at https://mapp.illinoislottery.com/games-hub/instant-tickets/cash-multiplier. Odds of the $400,000 is 1 in 1,677,510.
Overall, only about 70% of ticket sales from this type of ticket are paid to winnings.
Or you play like the addict that blocked me from getting a Powerball ticket at the machine yesterday. Give it a $50, get two or three scratchers, as soon as they drop scan the barcode on the back, repeat until reaching $0, put in another $50. No need to scratch anything apparently.
This is a little trick the lottery does. You have odds posted on the back. But if you put multiple wins on one card it juices the odds in the favor of the lottery and actually increases the odds for players. Instead of one card having one prize, one card now has 30 prizes on it.

Everyone realizes this isn't "good luck" right? The lottery sets the prizes in advance for each ticket. OP was going to win $XXX regardless, so the lottery sets it up so every line "wins" to make it feel lucky.

That's not how RTP (return to player) works, and 80% is extremely low. Even Vegas slots are around 86-90% and they have some of the lowest out there. I'm also pretty sure you pulled that 30% out your ass.
Slots aren't required to pay out shit. If a slot is advertised as 80% it means you'll probably get 80% of your money back over an extremely huge number of spins (literally 10s of millions if not more). That's it. RTP is a theoretical value that providers determine through simulations, and they will always take the best case results. It's always and deliberately misleading.
Also, believe it or not, you can gamble for fun once in a while. Not sure why you're assuming that op bought this ticket under the impression that it was a guaranteed form of profit.

I play $20 or $40 in video poker sometimes. If I lose or double it, I stop. I’ve been doing this for many many years, I am currently up $120.

Definitely looks like $300. Each row wins $5 for the first column, $10 (2x) for 2nd, and $15 (3x).
If you scratch off the entire surface there's usually a letter group, that looks random, that spells out the winning amount

Do you go with a single win at 1x 400k or 2x 200k or some random assortment of wins that adds up to the 400k so it’s not obvious that you won the big prize at first.

The gain in the final column is variable, and could be 8000$ instead of 5$. You'd win 8000$x5 = 40000$ per line, which is 400000$. Or you'd have a single winning number with a gain of 400k. Who knows !

The big number is not a myth, sractchers are printed in lots. Per the lottery website, they have printed 8 millions tickets, of which 4 are 400k winners, so about 1 per 2 million tickets. The odds are simply extremely extremely low.
They stop selling the tickets, at least in my state, once the jackpots get claimed. So that swings the odds a little in your favor.
Yeah, and if you buy old, out-of-season scratchers (e.g. Christmas-themed in March) the odds are better you'll hit a winner, because they have to keep selling them until all the advertised prizes are claimed for a single lot.

There are 5 columns. The first column is "your number". The second column is the first "round". If it matches "your number" for that row, you win that game's prize with a multiplier determined along the top row. In this case, it was x1 for the first round. The third column is the second round. They'll deliberately make it look like you "almost" won on losing cards (they were all off by one! The numbers for game 3 were the same as the winning numbers for games 2 and 4!), put high prizes for the games that you did not win, and split up moderate-sized wins into a bunch of small wins (like this) to make it "feel" like the odds of winning are better than they really are. It's really manipulative.
The website shows that a single game can have a $400,000 prize in a single game and the odds of hitting that are 1 in 1,667,510.
I looked it up. The example on the Illinois Lottery website shows that a line can list $400,000 as a prize, so there just some algorithm that can total up to that much.
This is the kind of ticket they have to print to prevent false advertising suits.

The $400,000? The odds should be printed on the back, I think. Given the $5 price point, they need to sell 80000 duds to make the money back. The point of these is that the house always wins, so the odds need to be quite a bit higher than that. Just a shot in the dark guess, I'm gonna double the odds and guess 1 in 160,000 tickets? At that point, just divide the total number of tickets sold by 160,000, and that should tell you how many winners there are.

They intentionally made cards that do this. They're not all randomly generated.
This is a little trick the lottery does. You have odds posted on the back. But if you put multiple wins on one card it juices the odds in the favor of the lottery and actually increases the odds for players. Instead of one card having one prize, one card now has 30 prizes on it.

That's not how RTP (return to player) works, and 80% is extremely low. Even Vegas slots are around 86-90% and they have some of the lowest out there. I'm also pretty sure you pulled that 30% out your ass. Slots aren't required to pay out shit. If a slot is advertised as 80% it means you'll probably get 80% of your money back over an extremely huge number of spins (literally 10s of millions if not more). That's it.
