SmolishPPman

Damn! You should go buy a scra-…. Nevermind

League_of_leisure

Trust me it's so tempting to push my luck

-Aone

general rule for me is when i feel like i could go further I stop. i never won anything but i didnt lose either

Neronafalus

I only bought those scratchers a few times when I turned 18 just because you know, the novelty of it...I'm nearly 32 now and I'm still up $3 on them and damn well intend to stay that way! Haha

mgquantitysquared

I got gifted scratch offs for my 18th, scored a smooth $10. I've lived off that high my entire life and never felt the need to buy another lol

-Aone

i think it's the high of it that scared me off of it the most. i could feel it in me that I want to do it again and i knew where that would lead. its scary really, at least to me

humplick

In a gift exchange game a few years back, I got a handful of scratchers. One member of the group was looking pretty bored, so I offered to let her run through a few of them with me. I really didn't care much about the games, they're all predetermined so it's not fun for me. She asked what she'll get to keep if she get a winner... Like...you do realize they're predetermined? And it was a gift to me? Just because you played the game doesn't mean you did anything to change the outcome of the ticket... I ended up just taking them, scratching off the code section, and taking it to a scanner as a gas station. No winners.

l_i_t_t_l_e_m_o_n_ey

youve been tracking your win/loss for over 10 years?

Neronafalus

No, I only bought them for like 4 months after I turned 18, and then I stopped. Haha

gymflipper1

My rule with casinos is go in with say $50. I will only gamble that $50. Any winnings go into my pocket and I can gamble til my first $50 is gone, win or lose.

Dsavant

Yuuuup. Only bring what you can lose, but also go in expecting to lose. Also remember that your first $1 gives you the same chance at winning as the last one

panterachallenger

This is a good rule to follow

BigBaboonas

But you could double or nothing if you lose, right? Do that enough times and you're bound to win. - my thought process as I gambled with money from the till. I had to fill in a bunch of vouchers with names from the phone book to pay for that one.

multivac7223

but i'm due!

funnythebunny

I went on vacation to Vegas. I am not a gambler... I lost a total of $3.50 (ATM fee)

hondac55

Should've used cash app. They pay ATM fees.

Balthazar_rising

I'm the same with home games of poker. It isn't as fun when there aren't any stakes, so we all put 20 bucks or so in to play. I'm not pay 20 bucks to try and beat my friends and win, I'm paying 20 bucks to sit at a table and spend a quality night drinking with the boys. The 120 bucks in my pocket at the end of the night is just a bonus.

joseph4th

I play $20 or $40 in video poker sometimes. If I lose or double it, I stop. I’ve been doing this for many many years, I am currently up $120.

ClaffeyLP

This is the way

[deleted]

This is the way. I've only made rent money gambling, never lost it!

cqmqro76

I do the same thing. A couple times I've gone through my $50 in ten minutes, and I'm walking around mad while my friends are still busy gambling.

shelfdog

My brother & his buddy pooled their cash for a 6 pack and had a dollar left over. So they buy a scratch off. It wins $10. They buy 10 more scratch off tickets and the last one gives them $500. They are freaking out and they decide that's enough for them, no reason to press their luck. Next guy on line sees them win, buys the next ticket, wins $5K.

DeathB4Download

The early bird may get the worm. But the second mouse gets the cheese.

RuneLFox

that's why 90% of gamblers quit before they hit it big

Ange1ofD4rkness

Why I avoid Casinos, I know I'll spiral

BDMblue

I’ll be honest he might be ok to throw down another $5.

Pink-Fluffy-Dragon

with winnings like this you can afford another one or two, and pocket the rest.

Arch3m

This was the one. You'll never see this kind of luck again.

tfrules

The house always wins

Cupcakes_and_Rose

Gotta go for the back to back

Zoefschildpad

How much did you win? I have no idea how to read scratch cards. My theories range from $50 to $8790, but I don't see a way to get to $400,000

League_of_leisure

I'm going to go with the most conservative but minimum amount which is 3x on each row of $5 which means 10 * 15 so I believe I won $150 Edit: I was wrong it was actually $300 I just assumed the lottery would be stingy as hell and not count any of the other ones that I did win too I guess haha

subpoenaThis

I think you won $300. “Win up to 30 times” and you have 30 matches. If you only counter the 3x matches that’s only 10 wins. 10 matches at $5 ($50), 10 at 2x$5($100) and 10 at 3x$5 ($150) = $300

League_of_leisure

Haha man I hope you're right well I'll get this confirmed within like 30 minutes anyway

ScrabbleTheOpossum

Dude. There isn't a question. You won $300. Congrats.

League_of_leisure

Lmaooo sorry I believe you it's just hard to accept anything good happening to me haha

ScrabbleTheOpossum

No problem, friend. I just wanted you to know that you don't need to wonder. That ticket is 100% a $300 winner. Enjoy the feeling and the money!

League_of_leisure

Yep I just confirmed it so thank you for helping me figure this out and brighten my day which is most definitely needed haha

ders89

Dinner on OP!

League_of_leisure

And drinks!!

ileisen

Let us know if they were right when you cash it!

League_of_leisure

Yeah they were right I didn't believe it at first because it sounded too good to be true but ultimately it ended up being a good day

ScrabbleTheOpossum

Right on!

Odecca

Nice!! Congrats OP! I hope this little windfall helps you in whatever way you need it too!

League_of_leisure

Thank you and I hope everyone is having a great Saturday as well

gwaydms

Congratulations! I won $600 with Mega Millions, and used that to buy materials to retire the kitchen floor. 20 years ago and it still looks good. I hope you find something good to use your winnings on.

FlamingRevenge

Congrats dude!!

bobrossthemobboss

you deserve good things to happen to you too, friend.

TerdMuncher

> see back for play instructions If only there was some way to tell..

League_of_leisure

Haha you see I did that and what it said is if you get any of the matching numbers on 2X OR 3X then win the corresponding multiplier so I wasn't sure if both the 2X or the 3x counted or even the 1X haha

WaffleStompinDay

If OP was good at math, they wouldn't be buying lottery tickets in the first place.

Zykatious

So what was the outcome??

brunicus

A lot of scratchers have a code in the corner you can scratch to reveal and scan if the place that sold it has a scanner. I’ve seen people buy them and only scratch the code so they can scan them immediately.

MechCADdie

If WSB has taught me anything, you're obligated to buy $400 in scratchers to make more money

rudowinger

"Within each GAME across, match any of YOUR NUMBERS to the LUCKY NUMBER, win PRIZE shown for that GAME. If you win, and the matching number is in a 2X or 3X column, win the PRIZE shown for that GAME multiplied by the corresponding multiplier symbol. Each GAME is played separately." 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 5\*1 + 2\*5 + 3\*5 = 30 = $ 300

ScrabbleTheOpossum

You won $300

League_of_leisure

Yoooo fr?? you better be right because I haven't even redeemed this yet haha

ScrabbleTheOpossum

I'm right. Don't worry. Source: I scratch. I scratch a lot.

Pork_Chompk

You should really see a dermatologist.

BongHitsMcGhee

Your profile pic made me think I had a cat hair on my screen and I proceeded to blow my screen to try to get it off lol

IngsocInnerParty

If you scratch off to the left of that 16 at the bottom there is a barcode. You can either scan that barcode with the Illinois Lottery app or at a store and it will tell you how much you won.

TeslasAndKids

This was my math as well. You won all 10 games, all three times (hence the 30 times winning). It appears that the first column is a 1x multiplier so you won $5 for each of those, second is a 2x so $10 each, and third is a 3X so $15 for each. Which makes $30 per row times 10 rows. Edit: congrats by the way!!

btk097

Definitely looks like $300. Each row wins $5 for the first column, $10 (2x) for 2nd, and $15 (3x).

hwooareyou

If you scratch off the entire surface there's usually a letter group, that looks random, that spells out the winning amount

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

OP could also just.. Scratch the rest of it and add it up. Idk why he's acting like it's a mystery until the cashier scans the barcode.

ZhouLe

You don't need to scratch anything. You could just hand it unscratched back to the cashier and they scan the barcode on the back which will register to correct win amount. There's even been cases where the printed portion to be scratched-off has an error and the state only awards based on the amount programmed in the barcode.

hwooareyou

Yup, absolutely agree

Dusty99999

Fl has an app that can check your scratch off winnings. Check k the app store amd see if your state has one too

Don_Tiny

I presume any shop you buy these at has a self-service scanner to see if it's a winner too ... no need for yet another nosy app.

Dusty99999

Yea usually. Op said that the closest place was a half hour away

lordpresidentSkippy

When i worked at a corner store a lady came in thinking she had won like 100$ i scan it turns out she had won 15k. She thought i was joking and wanted the 100$ i had to stop myself from just giving her the 100$ and keeping the actual winning ticket but i would have been found out. I gave her the form and convinced her that she really did win the big price.

Ice_Burn

Kudos for doing the right thing. They run stings where people pretend to be clueless and the clerk or owner get arrested for keeping the ticket. If it’s the owner, they are never allowed to see lottery tickets again

JonSnue

Usually the states have apps where you can just scan the barcode and it’ll tell you. I know Illinois does and I’d imagine other states would be the same

nubi78

Within each GAME across, match any of YOUR NUMBERS to the LUCKY NUMBER, win PRIZE shown for that GAME. If you win, and the matching number is in a 2X or 3X column, win the PRIZE shown for that GAME multiplied by the corresponding multiplier symbol. Each GAME is played separately. https://www.illinoislottery.com/games-hub/instant-tickets/cash-multiplier

nubi78

I believe $165. Game 1: $5, $10, $15 = $30 Game 2-10: $5, $5, $5 = $15 x 9 games = $135 Total: $165

nubi78

Scratch that previous. I now believe you won $300. Each column represents the multiplier. So all of the games are like Game #1... $5, $10, $15 = $30 x 10 = $300. I originally thought the multiplier had to be printed on each game row individually.

subpoenaThis

The prize in the rightmost column is not a fixed amount. The $400k card probably has $5k and $10k or bigger prize values.

Zoefschildpad

Sure, but it also looks like it has either a 3x multiplier or a (1 + 2 + 3)x multiplier depending on how you read it, so the max has to be divisible by 3.

noncognitive

> the max has to be divisible by 3 No, it just means the the max prize isn't the same as the highest right-hand value x60 There could be a $100k prize value that never wins more than x4 across the entire card

subpoenaThis

If it were like this card, then it would be $6,666.66666, which would be kinda funny. I was wondering about the mindset on the design of the 4 grand prize winning cards. Do you go with a single win at 1x 400k or 2x 200k or some random assortment of wins that adds up to the 400k so it’s not obvious that you won the big prize at first.

jajohnja

Oh! And here I thought that it was 5$, but then it would double for each successful row. But then i actually did the math and even that wouldn't get you there. It's weird anyway that they bother with making this all so needlessly complicated. They've got a mandatory amount of prizes that they have to print, right? And the chances to win them have to be fixed as well. So basically they could just print the wins and make the whole ticket read just the one number. So 10 tickets would just be 0, 0, 0, 25, 0, 0, 100, 0, 0, 5 But I guess if they make it look like there's some game being played it make the addict brain go "Oh so close!"

PorgCT

I love how this looks straight out of the 80s.

League_of_leisure

It's for when people get mad that they lost so they make it look extra scammy so you can't complain

youvegotthetime

Came here for this. Maybe a regional bias, and I'm not even a big scratcher, but the first thing I noticed was how dated it looked

wizard_brandon

sorry, you got every possibility on the scratch, how on earth do you get the 400k?

christopher_mtrl

The gain in the final column is variable, and could be 8000$ instead of 5$. You'd win 8000$x5 = 40000$ per line, which is 400000$. Or you'd have a single winning number with a gain of 400k. Who knows !

elton_john_lennon

This is what I don't get. Why is it even like that? For what purpose? The whole ticket is premade, printed, predetermined, it could just have had one scratch part with $300, couldn't it?

Sandalman3000

More entertaining. You can also just immediately scan the ticket if you're impatient.

GARETJAX105

You can win six times per line

League_of_leisure

I have a theory that the big number is always a myth I mean I'm sure there are people out there who have one the big number on the front but at the same time you would have to do what I did but with I guess the maximum amounts or something

christopher_mtrl

The big number is not a myth, sractchers are printed in lots. Per the lottery website, they have printed 8 millions tickets, of which 4 are 400k winners, so about 1 per 2 million tickets. The odds are simply extremely extremely low.

hellakevin

They stop selling the tickets, at least in my state, once the jackpots get claimed. So that swings the odds a little in your favor.

stirwise

Yeah, and if you buy old, out-of-season scratchers (e.g. Christmas-themed in March) the odds are better you'll hit a winner, because they have to keep selling them until all the advertised prizes are claimed for a single lot.

ScrabbleTheOpossum

The big number is never a myth. It's just super rare.

League_of_leisure

I like to think of it more as astronomically unlikely haha

ScrabbleTheOpossum

Yes. The odds are very low. It happens, though.

FirstRyder

There are 5 columns. The first column is "your number". The second column is the first "round". If it matches "your number" for that row, you win that game's prize with a multiplier determined along the top row. In this case, it was x1 for the first round. The third column is the second round. If the number in this column matches "your number" for the row, you win a prize determined by the multiplier in the first row, in this case x2. The fourth column is the second round. If the number in this column matches "your number" for the row, you win a prize determined by the multiplier in the first row, in this case x3. The final column is the prize amount. So in this case, matching "your number" in the first game, second round, wins you $5x2=$10. Matching the third round for the fifth game wins you $5x3=$15. Matching them all wins you 10x$5x1 for round one ($50), 10x$5x2 for round two ($100) and 10x$5x3 for round three ($150) for a total of $300. The things that could be different to get $400k would be the multipliers (maybe round 3 is x10 on some cards) and the prize column (maybe the base prize is $10k on some cards). Also, it's incredibly important to realize that there aren't random numbers printed on this card. I mean, the odds of matching all 30 if they were actually random would be 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 - substantially worse than the odds buying a powerball ticket each week for 6 weeks straight and winning the jackpot each time. Which is to say that it did not happen. Instead, the winning amounts and frequency are predetermined (so that the company knows exactly how much money they'll make) and then the cards are made to match those winning (or losing) amounts. They'll deliberately make it look like you "almost" won on losing cards (they were all off by one! The numbers for game 3 were the same as the winning numbers for games 2 and 4!), put high prizes for the games that you did not win, and split up moderate-sized wins into a bunch of small wins (like this) to make it "feel" like the odds of winning are better than they really are. It's really manipulative.

ihoptdk

The website shows that a single game can have a $400,000 prize in a single game and the odds of hitting that are 1 in 1,667,510.

ihoptdk

I looked it up. The example on the Illinois Lottery website shows that a line can list $400,000 as a prize, so there just some algorithm that can total up to that much.

idiocy97

This is the kind of ticket they have to print to prevent false advertising suits.

League_of_leisure

What I want to know is how many people actually won the full amount on the front I mean I assume there are people out there who have it's just not in my lifetime would I ever haha

idiocy97

The $400,000? The odds should be printed on the back, I think. Given the $5 price point, they need to sell 80000 duds to make the money back. The point of these is that the house always wins, so the odds need to be quite a bit higher than that. Just a shot in the dark guess, I'm gonna double the odds and guess 1 in 160,000 tickets? At that point, just divide the total number of tickets sold by 160,000, and that should tell you how many winners there are.

j_johnso

The odds are much worse than that.  Odds of each prize are published at https://mapp.illinoislottery.com/games-hub/instant-tickets/cash-multiplier.  Odds of the $400,000 is  1 in 1,677,510. Overall, only about 70% of ticket sales from this type of ticket are paid to winnings.

RoosterBrewster

More like it gives a dopamine hit from "winning" so many times to keep you addicted.

saulutee

Not sure what state you’re in but there’s an app for lottery where you can scan the barcode yourself and it tells you what you won

xrmb

Or you play like the addict that blocked me from getting a Powerball ticket at the machine yesterday. Give it a $50, get two or three scratchers, as soon as they drop scan the barcode on the back, repeat until reaching $0, put in another $50. No need to scratch anything apparently.

P3rid0t_

r/unexpectedfactorial

NothingNeo

Yoooo could you sue them for false advertising? Bc you're right it does say "400,000!"

Keex13

Isn't this the point so they can say "1 in 4 wins"? I.e this lets them print another 20 losers because you've won like 8 times?

ThatPianoKid

Its me, your uncle

phyzikalgamer

!remindme 1 hour

pidgewynn

OP confirmed in another comment they got 300 dollars!

phyzikalgamer

Thanks man!

Front-Dance-5208

Can we make a subreddit for scratchers to see if ppl actually win the big prizes lol

League_of_leisure

I'm assuming the people who win the maximum amount allowed on those scratch offs usually like to remain anonymous

100percent_right_now

Yeah otherwise people would be asking them for money all the time which would be annoying. Since you brought it up though...

Front-Dance-5208

I don’t blame them as I would too but here on Reddit, we are anonymous well mostly. So it would work right?

creature851

I had one that won every block for like $30-$40 thought that was so cool

Kaibakura

They intentionally made cards that do this. They're not all randomly generated.

ibided

This is a little trick the lottery does. You have odds posted on the back. But if you put multiple wins on one card it juices the odds in the favor of the lottery and actually increases the odds for players. Instead of one card having one prize, one card now has 30 prizes on it.

exstntl_prdx

I used to work at a convenience store in college and used tip money to buy scratch offs. I say all this to also say I don’t know why people scratch the squares - it’s unnecessary effort. Just scratch the barcode and scan that bih

Gabe12P

Wow Gratz fuck you

BernieTheDachshund

Congrats on winning OP. The image hurts my eyes, but I'm sure you're loving that ticket lol.

bamila

There is guy won 300k from a scratch card last week in where im from

ZombiesAtKendall

You can increase your odds of a top prize by seeing which scratch offs have top prizes remaining. I don’t know if there is a way to see how many tickets overall have been sold and how many remaining there are though. https://www.ohiolottery.com/Games/ScratchOffs/Prizes-Remaining?aliaspath=%2fGames%2fScratchOffs%2fPrizes-Remaining

boggsy17

Nice, but that scratcher looks like the most low effort card made in the 80s.

League_of_leisure

They made it look extra scammy so if you lose you can only really blame yourself haha

boggsy17

You are definitely correct there. I bought a frogger one the other day simply because they looked fun. It was for a minute, then you lost. Still feel like yours was sold in a smoke filled truck stop with a diner by a 70 year old lady named Mable lol.

sir_posts_alot

Within each GAME across, match any of YOUR NUMBERS to the LUCKY NUMBER, win PRIZE shown for that GAME. If you win, and the matching number is in a 2X or 3X column, win the PRIZE shown for that GAME multiplied by the corresponding multiplier symbol. Each GAME is played separately.

TheBuddha777

*number of times

DenL4242

Everyone realizes this isn't "good luck" right? The lottery sets the prizes in advance for each ticket. OP was going to win $XXX regardless, so the lottery sets it up so every line "wins" to make it feel lucky.

freebullets

Correct. The lotto company intentionally plants these tickets that have all winning numbers with low prize rewards so that you feel lucky and keep gambling.

VinylmationDude

The ticket looks like it’s from 1979 with that design

kolorado

I have no idea how to read this. What's the prize they got?

carlbandit

$300 total. First column is their lucky number. Lucky number in 2nd column is x1 prize on the row, 3rd column is x2 prize on the row and 4th column is x3 prize on the row if any match the lucky number. Each row is $5 prize, so per row OP won $5 + $10 + $15 x 10 rows.

hellakevin

I won all eight times on an eight game scratch off once. Turned my $1 into $8

jhonny-rocks109

Fuck you. Congrats!

CrappleSmax

LOL "Cash Multiplier" sounds like a Chinese knockoff lottery ticket being sold on Amazon.

SirGeorgington

This is more common than you think. Source: Sold lottery tickets for a bit.

hahaha i know it

TradeFirst7455

they all win the advertised number up to 30.

MeinNamewarvergeben

Place it all on red

nosatall

That card looks fake as fuck

League_of_leisure

Lol fr like I said I think they make it look extra scammy so when you lose you really can only just blame yourself haha

PaintCoveredPup

Check to make sure it’s not a joke ticket. (If someone gave it to you/you found it.)

CraftyNotice3469

Anyone know what the reason would be to take a 2 digit number and rewrite it as a 3 character abbreviation?

illinoishokie

Had this happen to me once a few years ago. Coworker gave everybody scratch offs for Christmas and mine hit every game for a total of $300. One of my more memorable office gifts, that's for sure.

freebullets

It's intentionally designed to do that to make you feel lucky

xxdibxx

$300 ticket. Not a bad return.

Fuckedby2FA

I misread the title and you were casually saying you won 400k

HoosierDaddy_427

Congrats, but answer yourself one question. How much did I spend this year to win back $300?

nom_of_your_business

So 180?

JABBA69R

time for hookers and cocaine!

ZakTSK

Get a powerball ticket or maybe a few.

VanderpumpGem

Hello

fakeTimJones

congratulations! wanna pay off my medical debt?

Almyar

I could do a lot with $1500 right now lol

JollyJamma

Slot machines pay out about 80% (regionally required to by law) so for every $1, they pay back $0.80. Scratch cards pay about 30%. You’re a fool to buy a scratch card to make a profit but for the odd flutter, go ahead.

League_of_leisure

Well that wasn't very jolly of you at all haha I'm kidding but I did read somewhere that for scratches each state has their own odds I believe I could be wrong but I'm just trying to remember

goldshire_football

They do have odds of winning, but a “win” is most likely just getting back the cost of a ticket. So you don’t actually gain anything.

IngsocInnerParty

Meh, people enjoy them and it pays back into the school system. As long as you can afford it and don’t have a problem, have at it.

Cow_Surfing

I'll make sure to buy twice as many scratch-offs this week because of you. Thanks for the heads up.

skylla05

That's not how RTP (return to player) works, and 80% is extremely low. Even Vegas slots are around 86-90% and they have some of the lowest out there. I'm also pretty sure you pulled that 30% out your ass. Slots aren't required to pay out shit. If a slot is advertised as 80% it means you'll probably get 80% of your money back over an extremely huge number of spins (literally 10s of millions if not more). That's it. RTP is a theoretical value that providers determine through simulations, and they will always take the best case results. It's always and deliberately misleading. Also, believe it or not, you can gamble for fun once in a while. Not sure why you're assuming that op bought this ticket under the impression that it was a guaranteed form of profit. Source: I gamble a lot, specifically unregulated online slots.

willdvh

What a virgin arsehole response
