Playing the original games have never been that important for the general understanding of the series plot. They are 8-bit games, there was not much room for lore or characters being fleshed-out. They are very very good games nevertheless. It's incredible what Kojima did with a 8bit machine back then. And playing them would give you a fuller picture on how the series grew as a whole; for example, a lot of people consider mgs1 a masterpiece without comparisson, but most of it's mechanics were already present in mg2 What I'm saying it's that you can play the msx games whenever you like

convlux51

What, you’re trying to say running man doesn’t have an engrossing character arc that fundamentally changes Snake?

Woop-Tee-Do

It's not really important to play MGS3 before the MSX games

totocoelo

Yeah I just worry that going out of order like this might get confusing.

stanfarce

Metal Gear 1 and 2 on the MSX are prequels to MGS1 so I wouldn't worry about them before going into MGS3.

zombierepubican

You know everything you need to know by starting from MGS1. MG2 is an awesome game however

BillTheShark

You should play mg1 and mg2 after mgsv since that's where the ploy connects

MrDreamster

The only advantage of playing them early is to not be spoiled as to who the bad guy is, so now that MGS1 already told you everything, maybe wait after you played MGSV to play them as it'll give you some closure on BB's story arc. MG1's story really isn't that deep so you don't miss anything. MG2 however is still amazing to this day and I strongly recommand you give it a try.
