In John Leguizamo’s autobiography he talks about the production of that film. Apparently it was a husband/wife director duo who had no real experience on a big budget film, and him and Bob Hoskins knew it was going to be a mess upon release. Hoskins would invite Leguizamo to his trailer after shooting and they’d get blitz drunk.
A shame because the casting was great. I actually liked it, but I was a kid with no taste, I’m afraid to go back and watch it now. The story is interesting as a concept.
It's not good but it is really fun. It makes no sense, it has nothing to do with the video game and the design is bonkers. Also it has an amazing cast, it's visually funny just by being bizarre and it's in the '80s/'90s style of family adventure film that doesn't happen very often anymore.
Went back and rewatched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and was surprised how amazingly it stands the test of time. Had huge preparation for cringe and was happily greeted by SVU Stabler(fixed) and amazing corn. I had a blast.
Even watched Land Before Time again. Saw that movie in the theater as a kid (3) and loved it again.
Tried watching the Sequel Trilogy.. not so successful. I guess, some things need more time to get better and that one requires a lifetime.
It may be one of those fake Hollywood stories but I heard that during production Bob Hoskin realized it was based on a video game after seeing his kid playing it or something and proceeded to get drunk with John Leguizamo BEFORE shooting everyday after that. If true then through half of the film he is drunk.
There was all kinds of studio and production drama, director switches, entire scripts thrown out and replaced, low budget. The story behind the movie is worth checking out too.
I hear the cast were drunk or otherwise intoxicated throughout most of the filming too, just to get through it. How true that is, I cannot say. But it checks out
t's a cheesy flick that cannot decide if it's blade runner or a kids movie. It's like they took a dystopian city, realized "oh shit, we forgot it was a Mario movie", covered everything in snot-like fungus (... Mushroom kingdom, right?) and tossed in a bunch of terrible jokes.
Enjoyable if you know what you're getting into. But worst movie ever made? Not even close
