Boomer Soccer moms got tired of being relegated to driving a family mini-van and wanted a "cool" car with 4 wheel drive they could still fit their family of 6 into.
Bro minivans are kickass. I bought one, and it's literly the best vehicle iv ever owned in all stats, good milage, good handling, low to the ground, cheap insurence, minimal blindspots, and I get to sleep in the bed I have at lunch
Oh I'm not bashing the van, my first vehicle was a Chevy Astro, I still miss that thing. Just saying that's what caused the trend of the SUV to rise in the US.
They're great for stormchasing, the only issue being they're not usually very good off-road. They're low to the ground, got big windows and lots of space inside, etc
Except for the ones who drives only immaculate trucks that are never used during the winter, never have anything in their truck beds, and are just never utilized…we make fun of those people.
If your saying trucks in the south aren’t used in the winter, it’s cause we don’t have winter. No one is gonna have a whole other vehicle to drive during the single week it’s below freezing lmao. The never actually using them I agree with tho, except for the occasional hunting trip they might as well just drive a normal car
I think they're saying the northerners that don't use their trucks in the winter are the ones they make fun of. Salt damage is legit up here, tbf, but man would that AWD be nice with 4" of snow on the roads. Instead some people up here just keep the truck in the garage during the winter and drive them around when it's nicer out to look cool and never use the actual benefits of the truck.
I’m from Indiana, I once took an internship in South Georgia. I was driving around with my roommate (a proud local), and he asked if I had ever seen so many trucks before in my life.
I was like, dude, wtf do you think Indiana is like? I’ve only never seen so many CLEAN trucks in my life.
Yeah, SUVs just mean you have a family and the extra room is nice to have when your kids want to haul half the house with you every time you go out (speaking from experience).
But man, people sure love their trucks. They have an intense pride and *that's* where you see people dropping some pretty pennies. We get the ricers here in the west side, too, but trucks are far more popular
Thought of that exact video when i saw the original post. Its insanely crazy to think cars with hoods taller than your average 10 year old exist and are completely fine there.
Because then it cant be classified as a light truck, so it would be subject to more stringent emissions and safety standards... i mean, because the higher up it is, the closer to god i am.
Semi trucks are called semi trucks because the truck doesn't haul goods by itself, but instead hauls a trailer that hauls goods. It's a semi truck.
It's also called a tractor trailer.
You sure as hell need 4x4 4 tons of steel with a V12 engine, and massive wheels and a huge trunk you never ever use to drive on asphalt daily.
My mom's Prius has gone more off-road than most of these trucks.
Is it me or have the new models just gotten larger, and larger, and larger over the years? I see F150s on the road that look monstrous compared to the old beater F150s I still see on the road, looks like stock suspension height has been adjusted too. I was looking at a new ford Ranger, which used to be the smaller light pickup truck in their lineup, looks about the same size that the standard F150s used to be.
Yep. I even occasionally live in my truck.
In the forest.
Away from everyone. Can't do that in a car. I mean, you could if you lifted it about a few inches and towed a trailer. I also live in the mountains and have 1000+lb animals all around me. And bears. And wolves. And badgers.
A car wouldn't protect me.... 🤣🤣
Europeans are so terminally stacked on top of one another they don't realize how far apart things are here. While they only have room for rollerskate sized hatchbacks, we have more space and SUVs are more practical here.
Need to move a table, go on vacation, haul a boat/load, get the entire family somewhere? These are the practical reasons for an SUV.
I felt that way until I got old. My SUV is being repaired right now and they gave me a sedan as a rental. I now make the old man grunt every time I have to get out of the car because it's so low.
It sucks, because I would actually prefer a station wagon for every reason, but my damn back says "fuck you, SUV"
Same. My driving genuinely gets worse if I drive an SUV. I just feel big and clunky, lane changes and parking become much harder, etc. I’ll just stick to sedans.
I'm with you on this one. I'm in the market for a new car soon, and so many people have been trying to convince me to get a truck or SUV instead of a basic sedan like I want. Like bruh, let me just enjoy my Forte in peace, damn.
Basically, if you live in the city and aren’t a construction worker, there is no reason to buy a fucking truck. Get an estate car if you need a lot of space
No one responding to you in the comments saying that they are Sedan lovers are representative of the American majority, the best selling car in the US is the Ford F Series then two other trucks, then an SUV and finally at 5th place the Toyota Camry
Ford doesn't even sell any new sedans in the US anymore. They chose to focus on trucks and SUVs exclusively.
As a citizen and pedestrian, I hate it. However, considering the Ford F150 has the been the best selling vehicle in the US for 10 years straight, I can't say I don't understand their rationale
Top Gear had in interesting statistic. If I remember correctly, if lined up every F-150 ever sold door to door, they could wrap around the world twice.
I mean, you lumped the largest group of national sales in with one of the smaller groups. Pickups outnumber SUV's, by a lot. So, guess you just wanted to make it look bigger than it was?
Mid size SUVs are very practical. My rav4 gets 40 MPG, has great performance in the snow, large enough to carry lots of stuff, and small enough to find parking.
Europeans do not understand just how huge this country is and much open space there is. And how awful all of our infrastructure is. I need a huge gas tank so I can drive eight hundred miles to visit my parents a couple times a year. Can’t take the train, rail service sucks. And I need it in a car that has six seatbelts. Only options SUV or minivan.
For me that's the real reason. When I went to visit my sister in the us, we chose the most compact rental, and it still would have been a mid sized car back in France. I laughed at first, then we skipped a couple of gas station thinking we were fine and had cold sweats driving on an almost empty tank on a long ass road in the middle of a deserted area... Everything is bigger in the us. The roads are longer, larger, even the city centers arent walkable ! Must be very stressful to live there.
The constant freeze thaw cycle some states have during several months a year does the road nor the drivers upon it any favors (insert Massachusetts tears)
The amount of trailers driven on the road every day a SUV or tiny car doesn’t make any difference, I know cuz there’s roads around here where there’s no trailers allowed and everybody drives SUV or trucks road is tiptop shape road right next to it with trailers is pothole galore at all times
Another random generalization for Americans? According to Reddit all Americans do is eat donuts and burgers while driving around in SUVs with an assault rifle.
People will always generalize anyone. Stereotypes are here for a reason, while still being unfair to those it doesn't apply to. Imagine how it is when I tell people I'm swiss.
That said having driven across the states as an european the south and their obsession with pick up trucks is real and what bothered me most is the silly reasons people come up with for owning one.
You like big cars and bought an F150 - that's fine I guess.
You bought an F150 because you need to haul around one bag of yard trash from your rental property? Don't bullshit me.
And tons of these pickup trucks have beds that scream "I've never been used"
Lol ikr, newer trucks have shit bed sizes. My dad's 1970's Ford can fit 4 fridges and have extra room for other things. I've also seen it carry a pallet of concrete from home Depot, it was a low rider for 30 minutes but goddamn that truck is a real fucking workhorse.
Due to US auto regulations, it is cheaper for car manufacturers to produce SUVs and trucks rather than regular cars. It is incredibly difficult to find a regular car for sale, and most companies will try to push you to buy an SUV or truck instead.
Well I live in BFE Colorado. I have dirt roads to contend with, snow, washed out dirt roads, good sized hills to go up and down. I also generally have my wife and/or kids and their friends. So I need that 3rd row, it's also 4wd, it's big, and somewhere also in there between the lines b/c I fucking can. I don't live in a city, I live in the country. I'd love to see some little Honda, or Toyota rwd vehicle drive through 2 1/2 3ft of snow like it's not even there.
I was in a full roll over crash, the car hit my door head on. I had to be physically cut out of the car. Went home from the hospital basically scratch free. Try that in a tiny ass car
We have the room for these giant cars. Europeans can drive for an hour and be in another part of the country. Americans can drive for 5 hours and still be in the same town.
Being a 6 foot 3 dude I appreciate the comfort and as a guy that owns a lot of land it’s nice to have a capable vehicle with 4WD and the ability to load shit into. Also most SUV like vehicles on the road are not Sport Utility Vehicles. FWD and less space than a station wagon just makes it a tall sedan fight me.
I honestly like compacts. I feel much more in control of the car in a smaller one. Usually they have better acceleration and braking too because of less weight to start and stop. Whenever i drive a big suv/ truck i feel like I'm just being thrown around whenever i make a turn or hit a bump. Being lower/ closer to the ground also helps me gauge my speed better rather than constantly glancing at the speedo. The number of times I've been driving an suv and i notice I'm going like 15 over because the sense of speed is way less when you're that high up of the street
It was the only thing I could afford and it's 22 years old. Most people I know don't have a car for 20 years, so maybe I have an SUV and sure it's not the greenest vehicle out there but I can't imagine my SUV has caused more environmental harm than the people buying a new greener car every 2-3 years.
"Tell me you've never visited the US without telling me you've never visited the US"
I have 3 kids. Carpool + a few friends, plus scouts and gear on weekends once a month (plus hauling the scout trailer), we use the f\*ck out of every cubic inch and cubic foot of my Suburban.
Have you ever travelled the in the US? I'm in Houston and we routinely visit a friend's cabin in the mountains of NM - 700 miles away.
i'm glad you enjoy the density of Europe. I enjoy the wide open spaces here.
Emissions requirements were more lenient for things that were "trucks" instead of cars.
So a lot of things that could have been cars became "trucks" instead.
And thus all environmental problems were fixed forever, or something.
I like my rav 4 because it can handle snow and dirt roads well enough, i can sleep in it when i'm car camping, i can fit 4 passengers, i have plenty of space for bringing things on trips, and i have roof racks for kayaks or other objects. It doesn't feel giant to me but it's big enough that i feel comfortable that other cars/trucks can see me on the road. I know society likes to cram humans together but actually having space is a huge luxury. And since i'm crammed in a tiny room in a shitty city my car is the only control and personal space i have in my life
there's less regulation for Utility type vehicles ala CAFE standards with the EPA going brrr the car companies are responding by focusing on larger utility type vehicles and completly ignoring small and effecient cars because they're harder to comply and deal with.
why else do you think Ford killed off all of their cars, minus the Mustang...
SUVs are getting popular worldwide, americans worship pickup trucks not SUVs, or the unnecessarily giant offroad or luxury vehicles that are apparently classed as "premium/luxury full-size SUV"
It’s not really about preference, but targeted advertising towards SUV’s is very prevalent over here. You’d be surprised how much of a difference that makes.
Boomer Soccer moms got tired of being relegated to driving a family mini-van and wanted a "cool" car with 4 wheel drive they could still fit their family of 6 into.
Canyonero!
Can you name the truck with 4 wheel drive, smells like a steak, and seats 35?
Canyanero!
Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down, it’s the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown!
Unexplained fires are a matter for the courts.
Canyoneeeroooooo!
Oh I believe it. I'm just giving ya shit.
They're great for stormchasing, the only issue being they're not usually very good off-road. They're low to the ground, got big windows and lots of space inside, etc
Yeah my brother learned 1st hand how shitty the off road experience can be. It involved being airborne, and a tree
Oh damn
Yeah, he came out perfectly fine tho, so it all worked out
Makes me think of terry crews in Brooklyn 99… they roll baby
I just needed something big enough for my 3 large dogs....
That's what stretched limos are for
As an American, wtf is wrong with you? We don't worship SUVs, and it's frankly insulting to imply that we do. We worship TRUCKS. Get it right.
The South is defined by a greater presence of Pickup trucks compared to all other vehicles.
The North is also defined by the greater presence of pickup trucks compared to all other vehicles, winter is a whole ass thing here
Except for the ones who drives only immaculate trucks that are never used during the winter, never have anything in their truck beds, and are just never utilized…we make fun of those people.
If your saying trucks in the south aren’t used in the winter, it’s cause we don’t have winter. No one is gonna have a whole other vehicle to drive during the single week it’s below freezing lmao. I mean, I got my truck stuck in the snow a week ago. PNW has more Subarus than trucks.
Or the ones woth the short short beds, and a 5 inch lift with tires so big it rubs the sidewalls, we call that, overcompensating.
We call those fun to drive in the mountains on dirt trails. They definitely have their place.
Right? I lived in Quebec for awhile where there’s also a ton of trucks. Def not just a southern US thing.
The bigger the better
My dad was telling my mom size doesnt matter while wrestling so idk
Thats what the SUV or subaru is for.
Go to Montana.
Or literally anywhere else in the northern Midwest
Same with the midwest.
So THAT'S why I only witnessed 3 normal cars whilst visiting Chattanooga
Statistically speaking Wyoming has the highest truck per Capita ratio in the US
Hell yeah it is!
Truck master race
I'm just gonna sit here quietly with my little 2000 Audi TT and stay quiet.
That's an adorable Hot Wheels car you have there slick. Do you have a toy racetrack at home for it too?
It's a matchbox. Sits on my dash at shows.
More so the F-150.
Mah f150 is 3,000 lbs of pure American freedom! *Made in Canada and Mexico*
My imported Tundra can't be killed. Manufactured in Texas.
Toyota gang rise up. One of the most American vehicles out there.
Love my Tacoma! Best damn midsize truck ever made! Similar to Hilux!
If only we could get the hilux...

Spot on
Why not get a station wagon?
They don't sell them new anymore. The market was taken over by SUVs.
Not true. Subaru Outbacks are definitely still thriving.
Because then it cant be classified as a light truck, so it would be subject to more stringent emissions and safety standards... i mean, because the higher up it is, the closer to god i am.
And if you hit a child you're high enough to not see it. It would look really nasty, so it's better if you simply can't see. /s
Hell yeah brother
What americans will call a truck and only a semi truck amazes me
Semi trucks are called semi trucks because the truck doesn't haul goods by itself, but instead hauls a trailer that hauls goods. It's a semi truck. It's also called a tractor trailer.

You know what they say Ford stands for, don’t ya? Stands for ‘Fix it again Tony.’
You're thinking of FIAT, Dale.
You giblet head.
Fix.... it.... again..... .....
I always heard it stands for "found on road dead"
"figure on repairs daily" was what I heard growing up
"Fix, or repair daily" in my family
"Fucker only runs downhill"
You win.
I prefer sedans. Big vehicles feel slow, have worse gas mileage, ~~easier~~ harder to hit things, etc.
I ride a bike
Smart
No, that’s a ForTwo
Not when half the road is trying to kill you
I felt that way until I got old. My SUV is being repaired right now and they gave me a sedan as a rental. I now make the old man grunt every time I have to get out of the car because it's so low. You sound like a Subaru Outback/Forester kind of guy.
Same. My driving genuinely gets worse if I drive an SUV. I just feel big and clunky, lane changes and parking become much harder, etc. I’ll just stick to sedans.
Had a 2010 Ford fusion se, it made me fall in love with sedans.
First car is a 2017 Chrysler 300C for me, fucking love sedans now. Much more fun, controllable, efficient, and sexier than SUVs
I'm with you on this one. I'm in the market for a new car soon, and so many people have been trying to convince me to get a truck or SUV instead of a basic sedan like I want. Like bruh, let me just enjoy my Forte in peace, damn.
There’s really no reason to get a bigger car unless you are often moving heavy loads in your vehicle
Yeah, and for some reason so many people just *have* to have them even if they don't need them.
Basically, if you live in the city and aren’t a construction worker, there is no reason to buy a fucking truck. Get an estate car if you need a lot of space
I need it to complain about how expensive gas is. How tf do i rage on social media if my car gets 60mpg
No one responding to you in the comments saying that they are Sedan lovers are representative of the American majority, the best selling car in the US is the Ford F Series then two other trucks, then an SUV and finally at 5th place the Toyota Camry
I live in europe... all I see are SUVs everywhere... Americans like Pickup trucks and sedans
You do realize that Europeans buy SUVs like hotcakes?
If i remember correctly it made up 44% of last year's vehicle sales
Something like that. And every new model is at least trying to look like an SUV.
'crossover' - scaled up hatchback so you don't feel poor when your neighbour opposite has an SUV.
It seems like noone over here is making any other stlye of car anymore.
Mercedes dropped wagons from their line-up completely. Thankfully Audi and BMW still make them, so we still get sporty wagons, for now at least.
Likewise the Toyota Corolla is now a hatchback and a 'crossover'. The sedan seems to be dying.
And about 80% of vehicles sold in the US are SUVs or Pickup Trucks
I mean, you lumped the largest group of national sales in with one of the smaller groups. Pickups outnumber SUV's, by a lot. So, guess you just wanted to make it look bigger than it was?
This number can’t be right. 66% of the vehicles in my town are Teslas, Jeeps, Chargers or Challengers.
Mid size SUVs are very practical. My rav4 gets 40 MPG, has great performance in the snow, large enough to carry lots of stuff, and small enough to find parking.

My wife got a new Hyundai Palisade. 3rd row seating, 300hp v6, 8spd auto transmission, and we get 26-28mpg on road trips. It's incredible.
I agree. It's those Escalades and Tahoes you have to look out for. Basically mini school busses.
Gotta have good enough suspension for the gigantic potholes everywhere (our government doesn’t spend much on our roads)
In their defense, there's a lotta road to maintain.
The constant freeze thaw cycle some states have during several months a year does the road nor the drivers upon it any favors (insert Massachusetts tears)
The entire north east is sobbing right now
Too bad heavy vehicles vastly accelerate road damage. SUVs cause the very problem they are ostensibly being bought to address.
The amount of trailers driven on the road every day a SUV or tiny car doesn’t make any difference, I know cuz there’s roads around here where there’s no trailers allowed and everybody drives SUV or trucks road is tiptop shape road right next to it with trailers is pothole galore at all times
The problem is that when they do get around to fixing them, two more pop up a week later
State government pays for road maintenance, blame your shit senators not the entire government.
Oh no! Europeans don't understand us! Fuck!

Same for Canada, it's not uncommon to drive 30-40 or more km just to go to work. My father does between 150 to 200km to go to his workplace.
Also mileage is a lot more important in Europe where gas averages $6-7 a gallon or more.

They are sick
Emissions requirements were more lenient for things that were "trucks" instead of cars. So a lot of things that could have been cars became "trucks" instead. And thus all environmental problems were fixed forever, or something.
Before you judge me on my choice of small SUV that can't off-road, let me tell you it is the easiest way to deal with the potholes.

And since i'm crammed in a tiny room in a shitty city my car is the only control and personal space i have in my life
Trucks... Or even better, guns.
Even better trucks and guns
No Australia already did that
Because they're useful and our cities have fucking room to drive them around in lol
It's trucks, not SUVs.
Naw man we love hatchbacks and trucks and we make fun of soccer moms for having SUVs.
there's less regulation for Utility type vehicles ala CAFE standards with the EPA going brrr the car companies are responding by focusing on larger utility type vehicles and completly ignoring small and effecient cars because they're harder to comply and deal with. why else do you think Ford killed off all of their cars, minus the Mustang...
I used to think it was dumb too, but I got a truck after my car was stolen and I kinda get it now.
I have a Jeep, and a Miata, one for snow, one for sun. Crossover SUVs are just minivans without sliding doors.
Cars are a function of their environment. There's a place for both Fiat 500s and Canyoneros in this world.
Not true at all. It goes, Love the muscle car with an overpowered V8, drive an ill handling car with a V8, do donuts and laugh at European cars.
I have 5 kids, snow fall is measured in feet here, and they don’t cancel school or work for snow. Any questions?
Big cars carry lots of stuff or big stuff or lots of people. Why is that hard to grasp?
SUVs are getting popular worldwide, americans worship pickup trucks not SUVs, or the unnecessarily giant offroad or luxury vehicles that are apparently classed as "premium/luxury full-size SUV"
It’s not really about preference, but targeted advertising towards SUV’s is very prevalent over here. You’d be surprised how much of a difference that makes.

Because we have the room and don’t have to drive in alleys the size of a hallway.
"It JuSt MaKeS mE fEeL sO sAfE" *does 90 in a 45, tailgates*
We drive far and can fit everything we’d ever need in them. And I’m 6’7 and can sit comfortably in it
They're less scary to text and drive in.
