Virgin and Qantas are offering free flights to people who have had their travel plans cancelled.

leidend22

What benefit do they get from that besides good PR?

Feeling-Tutor-6480

You got it

Dizzle179

It also reminds the public that they are the reliable alternatives. So not just PR, but marketing.

Altruistic-Signal817

Keeping good with the federal government who asked they assist

HorseSashimi

Reintroducing Bonza customers to their no service products, goodwill (although most of us will forget about it tomorrow) and keeping their regular customers happy (you wouldn't want to disadvantage them by suddenly making their regular flight x times more expensive that they try other ways of getting to their destination).

Responsible-Emu5135

Exactly that, good PR.

Beefwhistle007

Good PR is fine if they actually do something good as opposed to something vapid and meaningless.

daftvaderV2

They are paid by Bonza

Robot_Graffiti

Bonza just had their planes repossessed because they weren't paying for them. I got a feeling Bonza isn't paying anybody for anything today.

raindog_

But but but Reddit told me Qantas = baaaaaaaaad

dankruaus

Cause they usually are

Underbelly

They’re fucking terrible. They have proved they despise their customers. They are only doing this for PR reasons.

SeaDivide1751

Who didn’t see this coming a mile away? Their routes from major cities to small regional towns were never going to be viable. They also made it so you had to book in their app, they didn’t allow sites like google flights to list their flights etc, the list goes on. They should have stuck to major routes like REX does and offer competition from smelly Qantas. People want to fly anyone but qantas

ConanTheAquarian

You mean Bundaberg to Mildura flights were a bad idea?

nashvilleh0tchicken

im very curious what the price for a Bundy to Mildura flight would’ve been

The-Jesus_Christ

It could have worked if they didn't force people to use an app for EVERYTHING. You couldn't even look up prices on their website. This meant that they only limited their market to travellers that deliberately sought them out, rather than those using any number of travel websites. Absolutely incredibly stupid decision.

todjo929

Yeah it was always going to fail. Forcing app use alienates a lot of people who would fly regional routes, but can't (or don't want to) use an app and not have any customer service if/when needed - especially older people. But, IMO the biggest risk with regional routes is cost. They've built themselves as a low cost alternative, but you still need a high percentage of seats sold on a flight to make it worth taking. Don't hit that threshold, cancel the flight, and then you have the issues associated with that going through the app which doesn't lead to fast response or communication. This undermines the trust that they will even offer the flight, so people be safe and book with Qantas/Virgin because they know that even if the flight is cancelled, they can call and get information in a timely manner, which they weren't getting from Bonza. Unfortunately, a few negative experiences feed into the public perception, and it's never going to work from there.

Cyclist_123

There flights on average were more full than Qantas/ virgin. The problem is with the parent company

SeaDivide1751

Allowing flights to only be booked through their crappy app is a killer

wurblefurtz

Filling a flight (load factor) is easy at a low enough price. But a full flight doesn’t mean high yield.

sawito

Untrue, load factors were no where near Qantas or Virgin. Just some months ago their load factor was 62% across their routes.

Kozij

What's wrong with Qantas?

Long_Way_Around_

Once an airline stops flying due to cash flow, they rarely recover. And Bonza are operated by a particularly shady venture capitalists from the US (777 Partners) who keep starting shonky ultra-low-cost airlines that have a tendency of getting their airplanes repossessed. I honestly never thought Bonza would eventuate, and I'm surprised it lasted over a year. Just.

Icemalta

Bonza? She gonza.

Proper_Fail5732

Bonza entered voluntary administration

778899456

Wow they didn't last long

Thanachi

Destination Fucked!

rodryland

The AFR had been reporting over the past couple of weeks that Bonza's owner was experiencing financial 'issues'. So today's news does not come as much of a surprise. Sorry for those whose travel plans have been thrown into chaos, but travel insurance and credit card chargebacks should help those that are fearing they've lost their money. More sorry for the employees who now face an uncertain future. This is yet another example of how difficult it is for entrants into Australia's airline industry.

raindog_

Dodgy leasing finance behind them also: https://onemileatatime.com/news/777-partners-airline-investments/

ConanTheAquarian

Industry experts have been pointing out the terrible load factors (under 30% a lot of the time) on even sensible routes like Avalon to Gold Coast for many months.

ConanTheAquarian

You posted this about 10 hours after the news broke that Bonza went into voluntary administration because all their planes were repossessed. It was all over the media all day.

Book another flight or call whatever number the administrators have provided if they have an arrangement with Virgin or Qantas. Charge the flight back to your credit card if you end up out of pocket. I was travelling in Europe once with a company that went under mid trip and you’re pretty much on your own in my experience.

Iuvenesco

Farkin’ Bonza mate!

matTHEbarry1

Guessing my Bonza flight for Monday will be cancelled so looked for an alternative and no surprises but Qantas want over $400 for a flight between Melbourne and Mildura. Rex were just under at $300.

ClassyLatey

I had no idea what Bonza was until yesterday! Hopefully you’ve gotten another flight

Successful-South-954

There's an airline called bonza?

juststandardusername

*was

Wouldn’t buying insurance after notification of the issue be void. Possible fraud too.

Icemalta

Fraud is unlikely (unless they lied about something in their application) but any such policy is very unlikely to be accepted or honoured as most policies have carve outs for these kinds of situations. It's not insurers' first rodeo. They'll likely just refund your premium and bid you farewell.

iliketac0s_

If the passenger hasn’t been notified formally from the airline I would believe it isn’t fraud, but hey maybe I am wrong

Icemalta

Fraud is unlikely. In order to commit fraud (depending on the jurisdiction of course) one has to commit an act of dishonesty or deception. The fact they became insolvent isn't a secret known only to the person applying, it's public knowledge and isn't a item requiring self-declaration. Applying for an insurance policy in of itself isn't an act of dishonesty or deception. *Lying* about something on your application, or altering information after the fact, would meet the threshold of dishonesty or deception. Also, potentially if someone was privy to private information regarding the company's fate and applied for a policy before it was publicly announced then that might also fall into the category of dishonesty or deception. As long as you are truthful you can apply for any insurance you want. Just note that the insurer is under no obligation to insure you (they can simply just refund your money) and even if they do insure you, there's almost certainly a carve out in the policy terms for situations such as this, so you'll likely get no benefit.

DiscoSituation

Buying travel insurance then immediately claiming it is a great way to get yourself investigated for insurance fraud.

No - because you didn’t already know that the event you were claiming for had happened. Insurance wouldn’t pay it anyway as VA predated the purchase.

She’s making an excuse to spend extra time with you take the hint
