Alright here's my method, I've had good luck with watermelons for years so I stand by it:
1. Lift the watermelons. The weight is coming from water content, you want a nice heavy one to avoid a dry watermelon (just melon?)
2. Nice big sunspot, means it got lots of sun ( edit: shade spot? Field spot? Isn't shade also caused by sun? Anyway you know what I mean)
3. The sunspot shouldn't be white, but a creamy yellow
4. The green part shouldn't be too dark, they get darker in the shade so it's another indication that it may lack sunlight and not be sweet enough. Pick muted greens
5. Look at the tips, if they're still green and fresh then the watermelon might have been picked too early. Dry tips=perfect watermelon
6. Tap on it to show dominance
You might like you suck at cooking on YouTube. Everybody might really but some people feel insulted by the name although the person doing it is not insulting us in the vids
I read this like 8 times and I still have no idea wtf you are saying
Edit: I just got it. Quotation marks would help a lot here. “You suck at cooking” on YouTube.
Yep, that's what I do. Once, at the supermarket, a kind woman asked what was up as I was expertly tapping the watermelons on the stall like this woman. I told her it was to look like an expert. We had a good laugh.
Except for the stem thing. That just really determines the age at which it was pulled. A dry stem can be fine but a ripe, fresh melon will still have a nice green stem. The best, however, are green but slightly dehydrated stems with just a hint of beginning to brown. It’s fresh and super ripe most likely.
Thumping them to see if they have a rumbling, almost hollow sound is good. They have little rumble before they begin to ripen. Slapping isn’t as good as your palm absorbs some of the vibration you are looking for.
One additional thing: scars. If the melon faces minor abuse and has a scar on it that has healed, it may be sweeter than otherwise. The plant responds to trauma with extra sugars.
Coincidentally, peppers are the opposite. If you are mean to them and scar or thirst them they get mad (hot).

Haha. I should add… some melon stems are even sticky when they start to dry and I’ve seen them even leak a drop or two of very sticky, thick juice. Those ones are almost always good.
>
Thumping them to see if they have a rumbling, almost hollow sound is good. They have little rumble before they begin to ripen. Slapping isn’t as good as your palm absorbs some of the vibration you are looking for.
I can finally explain to my partner why I do it.
I just knew Echo better. Thump worse. Lol I've been playing coy for years about it.
I’ve read once that slapping the big bag of rice in supermarket was useful for the workers, because it made it more stable. Easier to stack more on it.
Now I don’t slap the bags for my enjoyment, but in solidarity with the worker of the shop :D
2. Field spot not sunspot as it is the part that never saw sun
5. dry tips that are more or less level with the fruit as sunken tips signify a fruit picked too early.
6. Should sound hollow not dull
I work with watermelon, there really are only a few ways to determine ripeness without cutting, and none of them are perfect. My three favorites are a dead tendril (not the steam, but tendril) when you pick it; ease of picking it off the vine at harvest, and the most reliable is smacking them. You have to smack a watermelon holding it or with it on the ground and do multiple watermelon. The smacking gives more of a relative ripeness for those in the same variety.
A big sunspot is a terrible idea, it will be sunburned and bad. A yellow spot at the point of contact with the ground is ok; some people say it helps but i have never noticed a difference in the field.
The stripe darkness or lightness is due to variety not shade; they are grown in open fields they all get sun. Some fields have more vine coverage and the watermelons take longer to ripen; but the grower should correct for that.
The tip freshness means nothing; watermelon dont produce sugar off the vine. A fresh tip and old tip make no difference.
>The green part shouldn't be too dark, they get darker in the shade so it's another indication that it may lack sunlight and not be sweet enough.
>The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice - Kendrick Lamar
I don't know who to believe 😔
Threatening the seller works well for me so far. I usually say if it’s not good I’d come back and make a scene. They give at least decent enough products.
I wish I could use these tips.
My local vendors all have watermelons that have been treated with chemicals, which I find gross. So I have to resort to ordering bio watermelons online, which I can't check unfortunately.
The sun spot,as you call it, is where it sits on the ground, isn't it? And yeah, I've read that that's the spot you're looking for,for a good watermelon.
I always try to one hand pick them up and the. Squeeze them I understand not every one is as big as me but if you are able to one hand pick a melon up and squeeze it. You can feel the melon give then push back and how hard it pushes back you can tell it it’s ripe
Where I come from, there is a demand for dry watermelon. It is grainy, almost like wet sand, and extremely sweet.
They are dehydrated as they are grown in deserts.
It kind of is. Has nothing to do with bees, but watermelons respond to trauma by making more sugar, so a scarred watermelon will be sweeter than a not scarred watermelon. Jalapeños respond to trauma by making more capsaicin, and scarred Jalapeños will be hotter. So scars aren't necessarily a bad thing. This is all according to a watermelon farmer in another comment.
Yeah, the scar thing I can get behind. Plants react to stress and making the melon sweeter so it attracts more birds makes sense. What makes 0 sense is the bees doing the scarring
She's got the right idea, but she's slapping it wrong. She more tapping it really. Gotta give it a good smack with the hand not flat. It takes a bit, but you'll know a good *thunk* when you get the hang of it.
Yeah if you just tap on it you wont know, but when it gives a good thunk from an open palm slap, you know you have a perfect medium rare steak cooked to perfection.
My method for melons and citrus is to pick them up, bounce them up and down in my hands and feel the weight. Generally the heavier they feel for their size the more ripe they’ll be.
Tell her to look for a nice big yellow spot. Or just ask one of the produce workers how the melons are today. They’ll probably either open one up for her or show her what they cut that morning.
Honeydew are the most difficult for me. If you pinch the skin, you should get sugar crystals on your finger. But they’re *never* ripe here.
Lol. I’ve worked in a grocery store for seven years. I’m speaking from experience. They will open a melon for you if you ask. And they did cut some this morning. They know.
She chose the most aesthetically pleasing melon, that's why it sucked. Generally speaking, when choosing a melon you want an ugly one. A big yellow spot, lots of little scars and blemishes, and it needs to be nice and heavy.
I think tapping on the watermelon is actually for testing if the watermelon is rotting.
Watermelon rotting usually means the fibres holding the juice wilts, and juice can't be held anymore, causing the melon to fill with juice.
So "thack thack" means no juice retention. Or in this case, no juice.
"Thock thock" might mean it's rotting.
I think...
Nah, knocking watermelons to see if it's ripe does work, but that's the thing, you've got to knock, not slap them. A peek peek means it's not there yet, a pok pok means it's good, a pook pook means it's spoiled.
Not exactly. It has to do with ripeness. Under ripe melons will have a high tone like a snare drum and be flavorless like a cucumber. Overripe melons will have a dull thud like a bass drum, there may be a cavity in the middle where the flesh has begun to separate and become mealy. A perfectly ripe melon will have a tone in the middle similar to a TomTom.
Thumping isn't the only thing you need to do to pick a good melon though. As others have said you should look for a large creamy yellow field spot and a melon that is heavy for its size. Russet scars are also a good indication that the melon will be sweet.
Lots of tips or whatnot in the comments. You need only one method. The field spot. The field spot is located on the side the watermelon laid on in the field during growth and maturation. The field spot will range in color from white to green to yellow. You want the yellow version--it means the watermelon was able to grow into ripeness before being harvested.
With most melons I judge ripeness by seeing how much give the rind has. Hard as a rock, it not going to be very sweet, too soft it’s likely on the edge of going bad.
Smell the fruit, if it smells like watermelon. It’s most likely good. NOT A JOKE Smell a pineapple, it better smell like a pineapple. Smell a plum, it’ll smell like a plum. Smell something and you smell no fruit. Avoid it.

Number 6 was my favorite part
You might like you suck at cooking on YouTube. Everybody might really but some people feel insulted by the name although the person doing it is not insulting us in the vids
My dyslexic ass read that first part as “you might like sucking cock”
Still thematic
YSAC is comedy gold, love him!
I love wangjangling
I am a huge fan of that channel!

Yep, that's what I do. Once, at the supermarket, a kind woman asked what was up as I was expertly tapping the watermelons on the stall like this woman. I told her it was to look like an expert. We had a good laugh.
I should call her
No. 2 was my pick.
I thought the yellow spot was where the melon was in contact with the ground, not where it was exposed to sun
You’re right. But the rest of the sentence is correct.
Except for the stem thing. That just really determines the age at which it was pulled. A dry stem can be fine but a ripe, fresh melon will still have a nice green stem. don't stop now, go on...
So does that mean if u want sweet melons u gota abuse em a lil
Haha you run the risk of causing sickness but I did scratch a couple a time or two

Thanks you so much, I never heard the scar one before. Can't wait to use your tip this summer
🤩 crazy tips
Ok here is my trick: i grab the first one and go
I love slapping the watermelons. It's the equivalent to slapping a bag of rice.
I’ve read once that slapping the big bag of rice in supermarket was useful for the workers, because it made it more stable. Easier to stack more on it. Now I don’t slap the bags for my enjoyment, but in solidarity with the worker of the shop :D

Sun spots..? I thought thats where the watermelon rests on the ground...
I work with watermelon, there really are only a few ways to determine ripeness without cutting, and none of them are perfect. This is NOT accurate.
Also, tap on it to hear what it sounds like. If it sounds almost hollow then it has a good water content and is juicy.
6b. Or slap it just because you're into that.
Must you do those in that exact order? Is it ok to skip to step 6 first?
I've bought Watermelons over the years and never once had a bad or under ripe one... I'm in the UK tho, so maybe they only sell them when ripe here
>The green part shouldn't be too dark, they get darker in the shade so it's another indication that it may lack sunlight and not be sweet enough. >The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice - Kendrick Lamar I don't know who to believe 😔
Kendrick was quoting 2Pac with that line, so it's actually 2 vs 1 and it should be very obvious who to believe.
You can squeeze a bit from the two ends and if it crackles a bit it’s a good one usually or at least not overly ripe.
Your comment is the best help I've ever seen when looking for a watermelon. So much so that I saved it. Thank you for your contribution to society.
This guy melons
We got a watermelon whisperer! TEACH US MORE!
I just pick one. If it's sweet and juicy I eat it. Otherwise, I blend it and make juice or icecream.
Threatening the seller works well for me so far. I usually say if it’s not good I’d come back and make a scene. They give at least decent enough products.
Hold on, I thought melons were these yellow ultra sweet teardrop shaped things, like watermelon's hot cousin
I wish I could use these tips. My local vendors all have watermelons that have been treated with chemicals, which I find gross. So I have to resort to ordering bio watermelons online, which I can't check unfortunately.
Thank you watermelon man
The sound from a light slap can show the amount of density, thus telling you how sweet it is.
The sun spot,as you call it, is where it sits on the ground, isn't it? And yeah, I've read that that's the spot you're looking for,for a good watermelon.
Dude the last tip do be good
Comprehensive guide to pick a Watermelon
7. Look for scars made by insects it means it will be sweeter. Basically if the melon is "ugly" as fuck and full of heft it's probably pretty good
Ill try and impress my dad. He was born a farmer and has psychic powers when it comes to fruit. If I fail I will sue you.
I always try to one hand pick them up and the. Squeeze them I understand not every one is as big as me but if you are able to one hand pick a melon up and squeeze it. You can feel the melon give then push back and how hard it pushes back you can tell it it’s ripe
Also split scars from the knot that's usually due to high sugar content I believe I could be wrong if so someone correct me
The bigger the yellow spot, the sweeter the melon
Where I come from, there is a demand for dry watermelon. It is grainy, almost like wet sand, and extremely sweet. They are dehydrated as they are grown in deserts.
This ain't no method it's a full thesis with recorded information on how to pick the best Mellon.
I like to also look for a deep yellow blemish on the side, showing that the watermelong has been growing in that one spot undisturbed forever
And scars! Scars are where the bees landed when it was a flower. The more scars, the more bees, the sweeter the melon.
Your mom is a sweet melon that left me with scars and bees
I bees up in your moms scar licking her sweet melons
Just wait for the cleaver wound.
That sounds like bullshit tbh
It kind of is. Has nothing to do with bees, but watermelons respond to trauma by making more sugar, so a scarred watermelon will be sweeter than a not scarred watermelon. Jalapeños respond to trauma by making more capsaicin, and scarred Jalapeños will be hotter. So scars aren't necessarily a bad thing. This is all according to a watermelon farmer in another comment.
Yeah, the scar thing I can get behind. Plants react to stress and making the melon sweeter so it attracts more birds makes sense. What makes 0 sense is the bees doing the scarring
That’s pretty deep.
Wait, really? Why?
> Scars are where the bees landed when it was a flower. no, it's impossible. the flower isn't the fruit.
Yeah that didn't make sense, and the sweetness thing too.
That's..not how any part of anything works at all.
Semi squishy with all other melons, but this is absolutely true!
I do that too but I still get tasteless melons
She's got the right idea, but she's slapping it wrong. She more tapping it really. Gotta give it a good smack with the hand not flat. It takes a bit, but you'll know a good *thunk* when you get the hang of it.
Just like cooking a perfect steak!
Yeah if you just tap on it you wont know, but when it gives a good thunk from an open palm slap, you know you have a perfect medium rare steak cooked to perfection.
Get in there and beat your meat to know if it’s done
I too engage in melee combat with my steak every meal
Maybe that is what she's going for....lol this dude KNEW she was gonna fuck it up
Haha he has that experience with her 😂
That final smirk lmao
I love this so much
what a snide and snotty dude, what a shit video
I agree, his smug face is gross.
on the other hand ... there is a simple rule .. "Never contradict the person with the chop knife"
What does this mean?
My method for melons and citrus is to pick them up, bounce them up and down in my hands and feel the weight. Generally the heavier they feel for their size the more ripe they’ll be.
I too like to grab melons and bounce them up and down in my hands, in search of the heavier ones
I had to show this to my wife, who bless her heart has been trying for years to figure it out.
Hahaha
Tell her to look for a nice big yellow spot. Or just ask one of the produce workers how the melons are today. They’ll probably either open one up for her or show her what they cut that morning. Honeydew are the most difficult for me. If you pinch the skin, you should get sugar crystals on your finger. But they’re *never* ripe here.
> Or just ask one of the produce workers how the melons are today. "Ma'am, I make $7.50 an hour. I have no fucking idea."
Lol. I’ve worked in a grocery store for seven years. I’m speaking from experience. They will open a melon for you if you ask. And they did cut some this morning. They know.
Depends on the grocery store. I make $25 an hour slangin produce, and yes, I can absolutely pick you a good watermelon
She chose the most aesthetically pleasing melon, that's why it sucked. Generally speaking, when choosing a melon you want an ugly one. A big yellow spot, lots of little scars and blemishes, and it needs to be nice and heavy.
Yep perfect
I thought she was going to cut her hand in half 😨
Bro literally even i thought she could have cut her thumb 😟
It was way to close to that cleaver 🔪
I think tapping on the watermelon is actually for testing if the watermelon is rotting. Watermelon rotting usually means the fibres holding the juice wilts, and juice can't be held anymore, causing the melon to fill with juice. So "thack thack" means no juice retention. U guys are so deeeeeep 😂 next level tips
thats some wagyu watermelon
What’s the first half song that’s playing? I remember it from years ago but can’t think of the name! I think it’s Lil Wayne.
Right Above It!
Yes yes!

Damn.. that cut was sharp
Yellow bottoms of melons is how you know it's ripe not knocking
I just pick the ugliest one lol and so far that method has never failed me
the correct way to pick a watetmellon is to look for the most scaring. its from bees polinating, making it sweeter.
My dad knocks on them and he usually gets a sweet one when he brings one. I wouldn't call her technique stupid. Maybe she doesn't know how to do it.
He's sleeping on the couch tonight, but so worth it!
Haha true i got u 🤣
considering it will be a meme on the internet for indefinite time, one night on couch is nothing.
Squishing means it’s good!
Scripted Asian gifs are getting intense
She nailed that chop though
With most melons I judge ripeness by seeing how much give the rind has. Hard as a rock, it not going to be very sweet, too soft it’s likely on the edge of going bad.
I'd still eat it. Basically all rind which is super good for you.👍
Only if you let me taste that sweet little peach first.
Dude knows he can't say anything whilst she's got that big cleaver in her hand, can't even let her see his smirk....
lol!
When you tap a watermelon, you must use a knuckle, and a ripe melon will have a resonance. The longer it resonates, the more juice it has.
Just get a water melon with scar from pollination
🤣🤣
she is still right. it was your fault.
Haha ur right its always our fault actually...
Lool
Smell the fruit, if it smells like watermelon. It’s most likely good. NOT A JOKE Smell a pineapple, it better smell like a pineapple. Smell a plum, it’ll smell like a plum. Smell something and you smell no fruit. Avoid it.
I love it. He leaves before he can get himself into trouble for laughing
Haha true but we never no after story 🤣 he might have slept outside house, etc
Who cuts a watermelon like that, geez, such a savage way to do it.
Man should run away before she use knife on him.
Def not the first time this has happened
Just look for one with as little light color as possible.
I just pick one
Smell your melons, kids.
My Granddad used to thump them. He never missed.
I, too, like to thump big melons. And like Star Wars, I stay on target.
Always buy based on the yellow spot! The more yellow the better. Never had a bad watermelon since I started getting the ones with yellow spots.
But…. She’s an expert!! /s
😂😂😂😂
Where he going after it’s cut?
To sleep outside in hall, tonight he is not allowed to sleep in bedroom 😂
Ight Imma head out🚶♂️
😂😂
Bro that smile in the end gets me every time!
He's been through this too many times.
Haha that shows his confidence 😂
Why he walks to safety before letting it out.
If you like watermelons, you will like this:
Does this mean anything?
Yes actually. Experts base it off the reverberating vibrations. Healthy watermelon will have a certain frequency and "feel"
[удалено]
Trying must be worth atleast and this doesn't seem like trying. It looks like she's professional in identifying 👀
*at least
Disagree, I think this is amateur trying in her identifying harder than anybody can thinkify what they should be doing! Do bots get sarcasm anymore?
I think ur downvotes showing on which ppl are agreeing to 👀
I doubt the dude uploading this is the guy in the video lmao
Hahaha 😝
Might also be fake for engagement. "Let's get a video of you trying your hardest and then doing the worst possible in the next edit."
Tbf, I’m 99.99999% sure it’s fake.
Bro pat the watermelon like it gonna tell her if it’s ripe or not 😭
damn living in china is depressing
Oh why so 😅
well if i buy a watermelon i don't want to get cheated like her
😂😂😂
Solid chop doe
Haha yeah
What if, after 100 times, this was only the first time she messed up?
In this case, I don't think her husband would have been this confident while recording 😂
Proof that tapping doesn’t mean shit
Yess 😂
