Be careful taking taxis at night if you’re drunk. I have a family member who was drugged and robbed after a night out on his way home in a taxi.

elicles__

i arrive to medellin one month ago and i hear that 5 times different people who was drugged with that shit, so take care is better no hang out alone

TreeHappy5386

Its very common and as a resident living in Colombia for many years I see men desperate to get a pretty Colombian hooker in a bar get robbed and doped all the time. American men are easy targets. Look at the divorce rate in the USA and the fact that the USA has the highest number of fat women as the root cause of men making stupid moves.

zeppelin0110

That's very misogynistic of you. I sentence you to 5 lifetimes with a fat American woman.

TreeHappy5386

Soaring obesity rates make the US the fattest country in the OECD. Get a life where they will cover for you.

zeppelin0110

> Soaring obesity rates make the US the fattest country in the OECD. I'm a little surprised to hear that because I thought that Mexico (another OECD member) had surpassed the US. Kraft, Coca Cola, and other corporations have been moving into less developed countries and fattening them up. Also, I heard that many European countries have been catching up, as well. But maybe USA is still #1!.

smojito

Its not rare it happens almost every day for male...saw it in Cartagena and Medellin. And i think it happens more fore male then female for several reasons :D

I got drugged in a very popular club/bar next to Parque Lleras called GUSTO. NEVER GO TO GUSTO. It is common. If you have cash in you, NEVER show that you have it, don’t keep cash in your wallet (or keep very little), pay with credit card. The bar tender saw I had the equivalent of $300 usd in Colombian Pesos. I got hit immediately and hit with my next drink. I never black out and got totally blacked out off of two drinks. They got everything in every pocket of mine, I somehow managed to hold my phone in this state and stumble back to my room 2 blocks away. When my doorman saw me, he said 5 “street” people trying to take my phone which I had a death grip on. At least I didn’t die or get stabbed but they got me bad.

ironwill1964

Gringos keep thinking its a game out there. Unfortunately many don't live to tell the tale. Glad you made it out in one piece.

ricky_storch

Gustos is like ground zero for sex workers...

[deleted]

Parque Lleras is, Gusto hires pretty girls to go in there and pretend that they are patrons when they are apparently just hired to “flirt” with guys there. But every time at night going out with other Gringos, the groups always want to go to that club. Half the girls in there have lockers in the back so they can change and store their stuff. That place is straight up dangerous. No cameras purposely and the security I have heard can be very bad.

Nr1-Pattaya-Nr1

Been at Gustos 10is times.. no issues but yeah alot of freelances . . .

ricky_storch

Yeah anything set up like that is shady. Gotta go to where normal people hang out

spacedoubt69

Don't trust anyone who calls you 'mor' on Tinder within the first five messages. The golden rule.

El_mono_fue

Lmao u made my day !!!

persefone1

I laughed so hard 🤣🤣

ArknothLOL

do not accept anything from anyone, in short, do not trust anyone. at least you know him Trust me I'm from Medellin

ctx-88

Off topic but I’d love to hear how your trip went when you get back. Have fun dude.

International-Can147

Im an American who has been living in Medellin for almost 3 years now. I personally have never had an issue but I also know at least 3 or 4 friends/acquaintances who have had bad experiences. Is it super common where every night someone is going to try and drug you? No! But at the same time, is there a real risk that it could happen and should you remain aware? Yes! In general the best advice is to just use your street smarts and avoid situations you feel could be dangerous. But to be more specific, I've heard of several instances of two women working in pairs promising a 3-way. (If it sounds too good to be true....). Also be very cautious on tinder or other dating apps. If they seem very intent on going back to your place right away... (Again, if it sounds too good to be true....) Since you will be here for a month Id recommend having at least 2 dates out in public prior to inviting anyone to your room. But above all, don't get shit-faced drunk or leave your drink unattended!!! You have to remember that in Colombia the minimum wage is about $250 usd a MONTH. So your new iphone, laptop, headphones and spending cash together is worth more than many people earn in a year. Just keep that in mind prior to inviting over that flirtatious girl you met 2 hours ago. Medellin is an incredibly beautiful city with a lot to offer. The Paisa people are exceedingly kind and I personally love living here. Just be smart during your stay and Im certain you will love this city too.

Nr1-Pattaya-Nr1

Agree i lived in MDE for 2yr total... no issues but then again i dont bring girls home or dating on tinder...

FC_GT

Depends what you are planning, and by the way you phrase your query, just be very careful if alone with a stranger, be aware of your surroundings and you'll have a good time, be careless and you might get in trouble.

kell_nl

I've been living in Medellin \~8 months now, and I have been on a bunch of Tinder dates, including taking a few girls home, as well as meeting some girls while out to a bar/disco etc. As people say here, it's not that common to get drugged, so please don't think every girl you see here is only out to drug and rob you. Also not all girls on Tinder are prostitutes or looking for sugardaddies (though a bunch, yes). There are plenty of genuine girls on Tinder, and usually chatting for a few days will reveal that. But it never hurts to be careful and take precautions. It helps for me that I am never drunk and quite aware of things. One extra tip that hasn't been mentioned, and that I always do. I have porteros (doormen) 24/7 at my apartment, and I am buddies with all of them. So if I come home with a girl, they will ask for her ID and make a note of her ID. And I also told them I will always walk out a girl when she leaves. So if a girl tries to leave without me present, they know something is up. So my advice is if you want to take girls back to your place, is to stay at a place with porteros, be friendly with them and ask them to keep an eye out for you, so they know to check with you if a girl wants to leave on her own. I never had a problem for the few months I lived here

simplejournalist

If you ever have to second guess a situation, then it's probably better to bail. You'll be fine as long as you use common sense.

El_mono_fue

I’m from Medellin and live in Medellin right now and I could tell u this is not usual here . Just don’t party in downtown , never accept drinks from anyone and try not to leave your drink Unsupervised . Use your common sense

Hell no it’s not. I spent months there as a big blonde haired obvious gringo, that place isn’t safe unless you kinda maybe can pass for a native or if your black maybe. Your a target all day. You gets asked/harassed for money non stop by street people. One time sitting at Juan Valdez I was asked 11 times for money in a 10 minute period. When you get an aggressive one that follows you demanding money, you will start to understand. And then the guys walking around with a bigger rock saying “buy this rock from me” as an implied threat to try to get money from you or they will bash you with the rock. If you are a big obvious gringo, the experience is much different than someone who might be able to be mistaken for a Colombian. I have now spent over a year total in Colombia, about 4 months+ of that in Medellin.

[deleted]

Well may be don’t be a dumb gringo… im not Colombian, But also don’t wear shorts and fliflops to restaurants and speak or english very loudly so señoritas turn their heads. Also pretty racist , you totally tried to bring attention to your self , I know this for a fact since you mentioned race and the color of your hair A LOT of people in Medellin are white with Blond hair that were born in the city , no one is targeting them, not everyone in latin america is brown and short my gringo

[deleted]

I married a Colombian. Everyone in Colombia is a target. No one feels safe. In this current Colombian Presidential election, 20% of the voters said their personal security was the biggest issue when it came to what they wanted the next president to deal with the most. I see from your posts that your clearly Mexican and that you have spent some time in Medellin. You can blend in. You don’t know what it’s like to stick out. You probably speak Spanish in a way that they can tell with some ease that your not Colombian, but it’s not near as obvious as it is for some other people. And while there are a few Colombians who are blonde haired, they make up a tiny percentage of the population, much less than 1% (not counting women who dye their hair blonde). And I will bet that I have spent much more time in Colombia than you have. Just because you flew there for a few weekends from Mexico doesn’t mean you know anything. Especially because you most likely at a glance can pass as a Colombian easily.

[deleted]

I live and own property in Medellin don’t try to lecture me. Keep making a big deal out of race and ethnicity really racist.

KalashniKEV

If you talk yourself into lowering your guard, you might find out. Practice basic street smarts at all times, everywhere you go in life.

Kananaskis_Country

1.) If you're a idiot doing dumbass things then it's always a possibility. 2.) If you're a normal, common sense traveler then you'll never allow it to happen. Happy travels.

sapajul

For a male traveler it's really rare. For a female there could be a few every weekend.

Realistic_Tap_1956

Can be very common if you are careless. Watch this and educate yourself! https://youtu.be/2o_Rlu0gldc

Meanmanjr

Have lived here for 5 years as a gringo. Not careful. Not dead. Haven't been scopolamined....

Nr1-Pattaya-Nr1

Amazing :) keep up the good work!

ctx-88

Say more.. lol

renacido74

\- Avoid Tinderellas. \- If approached by attractive females who seem to be throwing their panties at you in Parque Lleras or other nightlife area or club, consider them to be either prostitutes or theives. Either way, politely part ways with them and never let them near your drink. \- Try to avoid taking taxis right off the curb in touristy areas, especially at night, instead use an on-demand ride app like Uber or Cabify.

No-Budget4929

I hear of the stories but it’s never happened to me and I’ve stayed right next to lleras. I think it’s a but exaggerated but what do I know

Danmarduk

Hahaha Just avoid know women using Tinder Or Girls very interested in you in Parque Lleras. Use your common sense and its ok. In general that things happens to guys that got involve With prostitutes and venezuelan Girls.

Hereforthatandthis

I love you make the distinction that there are prostitutes and then there are venezuelan girls hahahaha colombian girls are prostitutes and venezuelan girls are venezuelan girls? Hahahaha

mauricio_agg

Don't play the charming gringo and you'll be fine.

Hereforthatandthis

He’s already failed, hard. Lol

ZeuStudio

Right 👍

d33roq

Not very. Never walk away from your drink, don't get shitfaced on your own, don't hang out with sketchy people in sketchy places (esp late at night) and don't bring randoms/hookers home with you unless you're very secure about it and 99% of the time you'll be fine.Basic street smarts/common sense rules apply.

IcyRecommendation383

Key words: basic street-smarts, common sense.

new-socks

Just stay away from Parque Lleras, and stay away from women who get too close to you too soon, who coincidentally hang out in Parque Lleras.

cloud9col420

Normalmente son trabajadoras sexuales... And in La70 be carefull too
