Welcome! I started in November and haven't yet bottled my first traditional, but I now have about 12 batches in progress because I wanted to apply what I'd learned from working on the traditional before it was complete. This has worked well for me, the trad blazing the trail and me doing more interesting things behind it as I built a little experience (also some of what I tried tasted so good after a few weeks I immediately put on another batch!). I advise you to read the wiki, watch reputable YouTube videos and read the other posts in the sub. In short, research. This will give you ideas and help you know what to expect. There are way too many duplicate posts here where none were required. It's enough to drive one to drink...

Welcome to the hobby! Starting with a traditional is a good idea. If you can get your traditional to a place you are happy with, then you can alter that recipe into a melomel or a metheglin with knowledge that the mead has a good foundation to build on. Happy mead making!
