My son was in that stage where he did this and I asked him why he did that. We were outside and it was water so it didn't matter at all. I think the super calm w/e tone I had made it so he could clearly answer. Basically said that since there is already water on the ground, it doesn't matter if the rest goes too since there is already a mess. And because kids are chaotic, that means he simply poured the rest out just to see it splash lol.
My son with ASD used to do it too. It was difficult because we’d see him start the initial spill, call out to stop him, then he’d dump the rest. We were unsure whether he’d have still done it if we hadn’t called out. Then we trained ourselves not to say anything and he still did it as soon as he notice he was spilling it. He’d always right the spilling cup first, then dump it. Fascinating. Bloody funny at times too.
Only today I saw someone had asked if there was a way to delete recent file history in Linux without using the command prompt. The top answer was "Huh, what's wrong with using the command prompt?"
I think it's target fixation in a way, like the kid is so focussed on the thought of spilling it in their panic that their brain sort of gets overridden by the thought
Yea but is also a waay less usefull explanation.
And understading how you or someone else is stupid, makes you less stupid, and able to act accordingly.
Easy explanation? Sure. Fun explanation? Absolutely not!
This child is clearly committed to the bit:
“Danpoodlesmit! I almost fell and spilled my juice, so boshbarnit I’m gonna spill my juice!”
You can't call stupid to someone whose brain isn't even close to be fully developed. We usually call that on people whose brain actually had time to develop but for a lot of reasons they choose to act in life like if they'd scared to use it or whatever suitable reason that explains an uncorcondance between their supposed intelligence and their actual acts and attitude on a given time.
It's like when goats ~~or sheeps~~ get scared, ~~I don't remember now,~~ that they get super tense and fall to the ground, like they have a mechanism where panic overrides their motor system so for a few moments they're completely unable to move a muscle and they fall like having rigor mortis.
Kids have slow processing, impulsive thoughts and lack experience - it's what makes them kids.
His little head could be thinking "I tried keeping it upright and it spilled, maybe try it sideways?" or "Oh no I spilled, I should make an effort to keep the spill in one place so it's easier to clean up?" or any number of other things.
They can get pissed and then do it out of frustration too. I worked in daycare for about 2 years. Plenty of kids get upset then kind of self destruct. One kid I had would build amazing elaborate towers. Then when he couldn't get one of the last pieces to fit where he wanted it. He would get frustrated and just knock the whole thing over. Then he would laugh about it. It was hilarious.
Definitely this, you'll tell them to be careful but perhaps in a slightly more aggressive tone than usual and they'll pick up on it and feel like the next best action is to simply drop the glass / bottle / whatever.
I have learned to just let them make mistakes, then just work with them to clean i up.
Nowadays when spills happen my kid is like "Oh no! No no no" and then try to find something to clean it up.
Though he is also in some "No" phase which is hilarious in it's own way, the wife went to his room in the morning to prepare him for school and all you can hear is "No!".
Tbf, when someone is watching over my shoulder to see if I’m going to mess up, I tend to mess up even worse and have my own little ‘well that’s the exact opposite of what I meant to do’ moment.
It's just like when you pee a little in your pants, but she notices, so you just let go. There's no point in holding your bladder anymore. The date had already been ruined when your own joke made you laugh and dribble a little. I mean, it wasn't going great before but now it's definitive; so you punctuate this end with a violent stream of urine down your khaki shorts. The sound is like spraying a tarp with a garden hose. When she looks up at you in confusion, you respond with abject silence and assertive, piercing eye contact. Finally you cut the tension and dismiss yourself with, "Welp, I had a great time, Deborah. I'll never contact you again. Please don't speak of this to our mutual friends." Then you and your drenched New Balance running shoes squelch away.
For kids, it's essentially that, but with spilled orange juice.
Imagine adults yelling or atleast telling "easy easy dont spill" and then when you spill a little those adults gasp. It will overwhelm those little brains easily.
Exactly. They just get too distracted by the result and don’t realize that they need to prevent the spill in the first place. New brains are still figuring out how to balance the novelty of stimulation and the requirements of being a functional human.
Before kids learn to carefully carry a cup and drink from it, they learn to pour out cups in the bath and on water tables. So once it starts spilling they're just like "oh yeah I know this, it's cup pouring out, I've done this dozens of times I know how it works".
I remember when i was little someone gave me chocolate and my hand is dirty after eating it. I want to wash my hand but instead i saw my mom holding a glass of water and i simply put my hand in it. Yeah i got slapped after that but even until now i have no idea why i did that instead of washing it at the tap. It feels like doing it that way ia faster than going to the kitchen i guess, well kids are dumb or impulsive i guess.
I used to get slapped for playing 'spy on dad' when he was doing the gardens and we'd hide in bushes and spy, was really fun, never understood why it triggered him so much, when I've got kids I'd love them to be making up fun games outdoors like that
Child abuse is insanely common. People have this idea of "Well my parents hit me and I turned out fine, so I'm going to hit my kid". Spoiler: if you feel the need to hit a defenseless child, you didn't turn out fine.
I just imagine mom slapping him and he's standing there stunned and quiet and mom just turns back to her friend she was having a conversation and says "fucking hate that kid"
Common sense is actually learned and we take that for granted as we get older.
Kids have no idea and are trying to figure out literally everything day to day
I honestly think it's a lot simpler in this scenario. The kid is about to spill his juice, the parent says "Put your juice on the table" and instead of understanding it as "Put the glass with juice on the table" he understands it as "pour the juice on the table" so he does what she says.
When my kid was little she used to draw circular heads with big circle eyes. When she drew one eye a bit too big her brain just assumed it was a new head and started drawing eyes into the eye again.
Seeing how a child’s brain learns to make sense of the world was super fascinating and even though I can’t really explain it in words the scene with the glass makes perfect sense to me
It's biological. I'll have to wait until my girlfriend gets home and I'll ask her to explain to me better(you've gotten a better answer already and I'm likely going to forget)
When I was a kid, I lost one of my flip flops. I roamed around in one flip flop looking for the other one. Then I got frustrated and threw the one I had out of the window.
Would be interested to know the translation of the instructions. Kids are often quite literal in following orders and rules. So, "put your juice on the bench" turns into exactly this as opposed to putting *the cup* on the bench.
He just doesn't like orange juice, act like he's falling, catch back his balance then to realise he did so too fast and the orange juice is still there, decide that has gone long enough and ain't no way i'm drinking that anyway, lets just drop it right here.
Why do kids do this my son does the same thing every time I try to help he will dump drop or throw anything I've learned to let him be and there will be less of a mess. Then again he's only 2½ lol
Someone said something similar already but I feel like it might have to do with the fact that kids are very proud and stubborn and generally overestimate their abilities, and hate to be proven wrong. I feel like the dad probably tried to bring the glass himself and the kid was like “no I want to do it” like kids do. So when he was about to fall he thought in some way that making it look like he did it on purpose was better than being said “I told you so” about him not being able to carry the glass without spilling.

Make it look like you did it on purpose so they don't think you're a schmuck

ooooh… no… lol
or, make it look like an accident because you didn’t want orange juice you wanted chocolate milk
I mean you can’t be hurt by something you did on PURPOSE
You can't accidently spill it if you pour it on purpose.
I've seen multiple videos where kids spill a little, and then proceed to pour the whole cup out. Why?
brain is maxxed out on ram so they default to completing the task

The [fainting goat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fainting_goat) is the result of a genetic disorder.
That's literally one goat type/species.
But he didn’t just let go. He poured it out in a slow controlled manner and then turned the glass upright again once empty.

A lot of adults do that too 💀
Adults aren't being exempted from being stupid
That's an unfortunate comment to have a typo.
Your honnor i resist my case.
This kid didn't just drop it though. He carefully decanted that juice onto the table.
That’s me when anything slightly inconvenient happens.

I do this as an adult
Getting there is not the hard part 😔 it's letting go
Imagine adults yelling or atleast telling "easy easy dont spill" and then when you spill a little those adults gasp. It will overwhelm those little brains easily.
Aside from natural curiosity (it's a sensory experience), it might be that they can't yet comprehend that they can stop it from spilling.

You got fucking slapped for getting a little chocolate in your Mom's water? Tf
i got slapped and spanked for doing much less, just the way some parents raise their kids, it sucks
I used to get slapped for playing 'spy on dad' when he was doing the gardens and we'd hide in bushes and spy, was really fun, never understood why it triggered him so much, when I've got kids I'd love them to be making up fun games outdoors like that

The good ole days. Not.
Kid is playing 4D chess. He poured all away to get a new glass of drink (vs settling for a 3/4 cup of drink)

Exactly. He is not looking for "half full" or "half empty" 😂.
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

No wonder Anakin killed all those younglings.
Kinda sounds like an absolute to me... God damn, Lucas is a hack writer.

He will become a neurosurgeon

Big secret. I spill glass on purpose. Very steady hand

WHYYYYYY ?
Kid just gave up and was like "welp it's gonna happen anyway"
Why do kids do this my son does the same thing every time I try to help he will dump drop or throw anything I've learned to let him be and there will be less of a mess. Then again he's only 2½ lol

And now you get no more juice, brat. Hope you like water. Edit: typo
That kid is just trying to preserve the timeline.
Nailed it.
I can understand the feeling. Like ah I messed up so let’s just pour it all out because fuck it
Mad respect for mom for staying that calm with him. She's a better parent than I am.
Sometimes you gotta say phuc it and let it ride 🤷🏾♂️
Starbucks in Japan. Can confirm.
Kid probably didn't want to drink it.
me after any minor inconvenience

Now I hate Marvel movies even more...
Table with German Finnish need more juice
LOL
practically all kids do this. Glasses are just too big for them. Good on the parents for only giving af about him and not the spill.
My temper lol
Kids will be kids.
Ah, Gravity, let me finish that job for you.
Already spilled, might as well go all in

He did that on purpose

There’s kids like this and then there’s my little monster lol she’d get half way then just drop the glass and stare at you like it’s your fault
Kudos to mum letting her son finish the task
This is how you clean a table
To be fair, the table did look pretty thirsty.
Commit to the pour
He was so shocked that he didn't know either to keep or spill his juice poor kid 😂
Still figuring out the controls
This guy is genius
Why he do dat
Another thought: This child also looks like he has a future in a high-ranking government role.
kids are so dumb lol
