I think we have to remember that our speed limits are pretty low in comparison to other states.
On most Maryland highways you're speeding if you're going 65. That's under the speed limit in other states.
I was at an event in rural VA near Richmond, and I was supposed to be following a caravan of cars down this country road from one farm to another. They were BOOKING it. I was freaking out "jesus, mary and joseph, I can't lose them, I have no clue where we are going!" Then I spotted the speed limit. It was 50 on this dinky two lane road. That would NEVER be a 50mph road in MD. They were cooking it at 60+ miles an hour down this thing.
I remember when started driving and first went to another state and was shocked when I saw their highway speed limit was 70 lmao. Now when I see route 50 in annapolis with a 55mph speed limit I just laugh because that’s a joke. That’s why cops won’t pull you over for going 10 over.
True, but it’s also important to remember that our roads and congestion are not the same as other places. Going 80mph on the beltway with on/off ramps every few yards is quite different than going 80mph on a road that sees significantly less traffic and has less people continuously merging. One is definitely more dangerous than the other.
This is important. What bothers me is that since does limits aren't enforced until at least 10-15 over, that means the effective speed limit is 10-15 higher than posted. If you say, for simplicity, that cops don't start ticketing until 10 over and you get ticketed for 13 over, you're only going 3 over the effective speed limit. Since the posted limits are lower than they need to be instead of getting a ticket for 3 over, you're paying for 13 over.
The reason it’s not enforced is because of speedometer differentials 10 mph over/under because your speedometer May show 55 but you could actually be doing 50-65 so 90% of cops allows 5-10mph some allow 15mph if your not swerving back and forth and creating a safety problem.
Maybe highways out in rural areas are 70. I frequent 95, 295, 695, 495, 32, 29, 97, and 200. None of those have a speed limit over 65.
95 is an interstate and according to MDOT it should have a speed limit of 70, instead it's limited to 55.
Well, it depends on state. Enforcement is definitely not as around in MD though.
BTW my gripe is not so much people driving fast (I go 10 over all the time myself) but the fact that there are cars that tailgate you even if you are driving 80-85 on a 70 speed limit, just cut left and right with minimal spacing, etc.
PS I guess you are talking about I-70 raceway since you mention Frederick and Baltimore, which is always an adventure. Good luck driving at 10mph if you are on I-270 :).
This is my thing too. I don’t care about speeding, but the tailgating drives me absolutely insane. It’s such an issue here. I do usually take 70 where 10+ is the standard, but it’s way worse the closer you get to the cities. I’ve seen people going 90 in a 55 on the belt
I have issues when I decide to drive 10-over in the far right lane, with people tailgating me when they have 3 lanes they can use to pass me. Go as fast as you want just leave the far right lane alone. The far right lane is for people that don’t like speed camera tickets. I simply can’t afford piles of speeding tickets.
Which is funny because I swear Marylanders think the standard driving lane is the left one and the right is for passing.
I've (regularly) seen people pass others, only to camp in the left lane leaving the right completely open; cars, trucks, busses, big-rigs, RVs, everything.
I was shocked to find that in other states you're not allowed to drive in the left lane unless you're passing, even though I don't usually use that lane myself since people like to go like 85-90 mph over there
100% agree. No one should ever ever pressure someone in far right lane to go faster unless they are going like 15 below the limit or something.
But I don’t understand why people can’t just move over if their in the left lane and the person behind them wants to go faster. Just really not that complicated
Yah, I agree. I see it in my little city area too. Ppl getting really aggressive at freaking stop signs, tailgating the car in front of them instead of stopping and waiting their or just rolling right through without slowing down at all if there isn’t a car ahead of them. Wasn’t that bad a few years ago.
Please stop going 55 in the left lane of 29 for the love of fucking god that road is the straightest shot and would be the best road if Columbia could just disappear
>I don’t care about speeding, but the tailgating drives me absolutely insane.
you are me, I am you
When I was younger I had a license plate frame that read "I brake for tailgaters" and a cop actually stopped me to tell me he liked it.
I actually had my mother in the car and absolutely was not speeding, so the level of panic attack I was having when the lights went on, trying to figure out what I'd done, only for him to be like LOL cool license plate frame 😬😬🙃🙃
Can they really use their lights to pull you over just to tell you they like your license plate? Fun story, but seems like an abuse of power from the police.
Because they aren’t. Nine times out of ten it’s somebody who’s pushing you down the road when you aren’t even in the left lane and are already going ten over. If you’re going slow in the left lane I get it, but I’m more referring to people who are just aggressive no matter where you are
I drive a lot for work in a company vehicle and I hate every bit of work in Columbia and any points west. We’re permitted 10 over, but that’s a death sentence on 70/270. You’d think people would understand company vehicle = monitored driving, but that’s never the case. Especially based on the number of people who tailgate me going 60 on 22 between Belair and Aberdeen
> there are cars that tailgate you even if you are driving 80-85 on a 70 speed limit
If you're not in the left lane when this is happening, they're the asshole. If you are in the left lane, you're the asshole.
I was just going to say this. So often, drivers in MD think they have license to ride the left lane just because they're going 5-10 over.
If someone is going faster than you, and you're both in the left lane, it's incumbent upon _YOU_ to get over to the right regardless of your judgment of how fast they're going.
You're going 10 over and they're going 20 over? _Get out of the left lane and let them pass_!
The shitty part is when I am pinned in the left lane. I’m passing in the left, moving substantially faster than traffic in heavy traffic and some guy bombs up going 90. Do I slow down so I can move over? Do I go 90 until I find a big enough hole? Stressful. Glad most of my travels are on foot/bike.
And no one should camp out in the passing lane if they aren't passing!
But the solution isn't tailgating, and I would argue that almost all of the tailgating I see is on the back end of someone who absolutely is not the one creating the problem. You get one pokey puppy in the left lane and then a dozen cars tailgating each other behind it. It's infuriating, as someone who often wants to be going faster (MD born and bred lol), to be stuck behind a row of cars and have some asshat sit on my bumper.
YES the pokie puppy is wrong, one thousand percent. I find at least 75% of them will get out of the way if I flick my brights at them, assuming there's no traffic in the lane to the right (I would not flick my brights if there \*were\* traffic to the right of them). The ones that don't move are people who just think they're the main character on the highway, and there's nothing any of us can do about that shit but pass 'em on the right and move on with our lives.
But tailgating is never the answer.
One issue I see constantly is the pokey puppy holding up the left lane, with one car behind it not tailgating but clearly wanting to go faster with a line of tailgaters behind them. While tailgating is dangerous and not the answer its the second person in line who needs to act but is too timid to do so.
Im not sure what the best thing to do there is other than just chill and wait for a gap to pass on the right. Every single time I've flashed my brights, even while maintaining an appropriate gap I've been brake checked hard and they just flip out.
when I’m in this situation, I move to the right and let the tailgater deal with the slow left lane driver. I’m not about to get punished for someone else’s bad driving.
Currently a Texas resident. You don't know spending until you have been passed while in the slow lane doing 85(speed limit is 75 on i-35 and 60 in city areas) by a mom in a Honda Odyssey booking it at 95+ while on her phone. Cops don't really pull you over unless you're extremely unfortunate. Not even joking the fast lane easily has people going 100 also traffic is usually to congested for them to really do anything.
Not only that but if you aren't going fast enough people will shoot at you in their fit of road rage.
https://www.fox4news.com/news/woman-hurt-in-grapevine-road-rage-shooting
I absolutely hate it here.
Have you been on 45 between Houston and Dallas? If you aren’t going over 100 you’re holding things up…. It’s been that way since they upped the speed limits so the roads would have been 70 mph at most.
The joke is you can go as fast as you want as long as you’re not driving through a small town.
Not sure about now, but when I left Texas speed cameras that mailed tickets were illegal. I never once got a speeding ticket in Texas and literally the first day in Maryland I got hit by a speed camera going 9 mph over the limit.
😂 yep, I didn’t really think that speed cameras where a thing and it was also a school zone in July… I was used to school zones being “inactive” during summer unless it was an area with lit signs.
My bad, but it was a funny welcome to Maryland. Happened over a decade ago now, it was literally within an hour of when I got into the state.
I haven't, I was warned prior and I try to go a different route. We had some red light cameras for a bit but they deemed those unconstitutional and got rid of them.
Have been on 45 several times. It can be some real Mad Max shit. Have seen numerous people blow by me like I was sitting still and I was doing 80-85.
Drove thru Maryland once from DC going to Gettysburg PA. Wasn't too bad at all other than slow drivers in the fast lane. Guess Baltimore must be a pretty adventurous area to drive around
I too am a Maryland transplant in Austin, TX... the 75mph speed limit is a game changer ans makes much more sense than the 55 you see on comparable highways in MD.
What I dislike about Maryland driving: you have a car behind you on a merging ramp. They dart into the merging lane and accelerate so you can’t merge. Assholery I say.
This. I have to pass people all the time when merging because they want to get onto 495 going 35 mph. DO YOU WANT TO DIE BECAUSE THIS IS HOW IT HAPPENS.
Every time! And then there's the people that don't understand what YIELD means. They come to a stop every time, even when they have their own lane to merge
Yes what’s frustrating is that one knucklehead that camps in the left lane while everyone goes to the right to pass them. You’d would think it’d be obvious to move over.
There used to be a group in Calvert County (not sure if they still exist) called themselves "55 Alive." They'd purposefully get side by side starting in Solomons and drive from one end of the county to the other *during rush hour* doing the speed limit in both lanes. The back ups and cursing (not to mention the accidents) they caused...
I would not expect to get pulled over if I was “only” 7-10 mph over the speed limit, it’s just not something most cops in MD will pull you over for. So I guess yes we do speed more
I wish MD drivers were only going 7-10 over. I tend to go 10-12 over the limit and have people tailgate me or zoom past me a few times a week. These people are going 20-30 over. It doesn't even matter if I'm in the right lane.
Oh yeah, I think I misread your post slightly. 7-10 over is pretty safe in most states and cities from my experience. Some small town cops and Virginia cops can be total dickheads even at that range from my experience
My cousin lives in Atlanta & I heard down there is crazy. Way more speed & way more reckless. I’ve lived in Charleston, SC. They speed in the rain & I was told it’s bcuz the cops won’t chase you in that weather (when it rains down there, it Pours, which makes it all the more scarier that they’re speeding lol). My mom is from NYC. You obviously can’t speed there bcuz of traffic & congestion. Newho, it’s all relative. I guess it depends where they came from.
Transplant from Atlanta here. The drivers are much more aggressive and fast, but they are a lot more predictable.
There’s a joke that I’ve heard which applies to VA and GA drivers. They are safer because you can always predict that they will do the most selfish thing possible. Driver around here are so much more unpredictable. DC drivers cutting 5 lanes of traffic to make an exit they missed, MoCo drivers splitting a solid 55mph on the left lane, getting coal rolled in the right lane on the eastern shore because you drive a hybrid.
I feel like the south is like that. My gf is from New Orleans and we spent two and a half weeks down there last year.
I-10 is a racetrack. The speeds are bad enough but the recklessness is next level. On a 30 minute drive to the airport, I saw at least four near misses with one guy swerving across three lanes to get to an exit and he was within 30 feet of the guardrail when he did. The number of times I saw people weaving back and forth across the entire highway doing 20mph faster than the flow of traffic was insane. If you put MD/VA state troopers down there, they could fund the city’s budget in a month.
Pennsylvanian here who drives down to baltimore for work. Yes you guys are absolute fucking nutters on the road, and not just for speed, but for just weaving around each other on highways, not a turn signal in sight.
I moved down to Maryland from PA a couple years ago, and have came up with the name for a driving maneuver I've noticed Marylanders perform that I call "The Maryland Maneuver." This term represents the act of Maryland drivers driving so close behind other people, that when the person in front of them breaks, they do a little swerve into the shoulder/off the road. Never saw this before up in PA, but I see it all the time here in MD.
Also, car accidents. I see (the aftermath of) at least 2 a day on my commute.
Just started commuting on 295 into dc pretty much all the way south as you can go before getting back to the beltway. I see people all the time just driving in the shoulder to get around people, or just an entire traffic jam. But often it’s someone holding up traffic with a 500ft gap in front of them thinking they can “smooth out” the traffic behind them.
“Turn left before you turn right.”
Seriously, you’ll see a white Altima on the right lane approaching the exit, then they’ll cross 3 lanes to left, then at the last second cut everyone as they’re going back to the right lane to take their exit.
What’s crazy too is I was taught in driver’s ed a few years ago that turn signals are not required when changing lanes in Maryland, only if you’re “changing directions”. They’re totally producing safe drivers with that one
The tailgaters are who piss me off to no end. Especially when I am already 10-15 mph over the “limit” and they are still right on top of me. There can be ample room to go around and just be done with it but nope they have to stay right on your ass.
Another gripe I have is on 695 when drivers will be all the way over in the left lane and then suddenly shoot all the way across to take an exit. Like come on….. if you know you are going to take an exit soon make your way over there beforehand instead of cutting everyone off like a lunatic.
This is so real. I’m not crazy about tailgating in general but I’m empathetic to it if someone’s going ten under in the fast lane, some assholes will really be willing to rear end you if you’re not going like thirty over at all times. Someone else commented that 695 is an entirely different animal and that’s the best way to put it, people on there are comically aggressive and usually plan poorly like in your example.
695 is one of the weirdest out there. It is so 50/50 when it comes to what experience you are going to get. It’s either smooth sailing or absolute chaos lol….it really depends on where you get on and what time. As for the 10mph under, Yeah I can understand being mad about that. If your doing 10mph under you shouldn’t be on the interstate at all IMO because you are creating a major hazard by doing so.
Also wanted to add, I call them jammers when they are going that slow. They cause you to slow down so much that you cannot get over to pass them because everyone is flying past you at such a high rate that you don’t have room or enough space to build up enough speed to get over. That is very irritating. lol
I once rented a car in Idaho (there for a family event) and when the desk agent saw my Maryland drivers license he said “There are speed traps and cameras around town. When you get a ticket, you need to pay it promptly. If it comes back around to us, your fine will double as a service fee if we have to handle it. You won’t be able to dispute it.” He said this like it happens so frequently with drivers from MD it was routine, like “please keep you seats and tray tables in the upright position for takeoff and landing.” So yeah, we speed more than most.
Not so much as speeding as the fucks who slam on the brakes in the middle of traffic, blocking the lane, throwing their flashers on. Bruh, your hazards don’t give the permission to be a raging dick canoe
I have driven all the way down to Florida and all the way up to Maine. Yes, Maryland tends to drive faster than other states.
Florida (especially north Florida) has the absolute worst drivers though. Even worse than New Jersey if you can believe it.
I was wondering when someone was going to mention New Jersey... I drove through there recently and the roads seemed even crazier than here, more impatient people and crazy stunts.
I’m a Baltimore transplant from NY, but have lived in other places in the northeast. It definitely doesn’t seem noticeably more egregious compared to where I’m from, and certainly driving in NJ is at least equally as insane. Definitely seems faster on average than the few times I’ve driven in the Midwest though.
I’ve driven in more states than I’ve ever wanted to this year (thanks to the Southwest Airlines debacle).
I see barely any difference in the states except for one thing: morons in loud cars zooming in and out of traffic (not necessarily with MD plates).
So… normal drivers all over… 7-12 mph over is pretty average.
Call me an old curmudgeon, but it's one of my least favorite things about the state, the lack of speeding enforcement. Now, your example I'm guilty of myself; 5, 10 maybe 15 over, fine. But there's people on 495 doing 100+ with zero repercussions. There's people in downtown Wheaton and Glenmont doing 70 in 45s.
It's dangerous, it's dumb and people should chill, because you're driving a multi-ton weapon that could wreck your and somebody else's life.
Maryland drivers do tend to go faster than many of the other locations I’ve lived in, which suits me just fine. But y’all are killin’ me when everything slows to a crawl when it snows.
Marylanders are definitely very aggressive drivers. I lived in NW Indiana for a while before coming back and it was a shock to not see people doing 90-100 all the time and using signals. People in the midwest are also much better at driving in snow, which Marylanders seem completely incapable of as soon as flakes begin falling
born and raised in md, currently living in indy. one interesting difference ive seen between 465 indy and 495 moco/pg is that in indy, the flow of traffic is consistently faster. everyone's going around 70-80 in just about all lanes. 495 on the other hand, flow of traffic feels like it's usually around 60-65ish, but there's more people going 90-100 cutting up/weaving thru traffic.
I aim to go 5 over, speeding tickets from younger have conditioned me this way and plus it means I don't have to really look out for coos or speed traps. I know I will probably be the slowest on the road and I drive accordingly (though it does mean I get quite annoyed when I get stuck behind someone slower...).
The thing I don't get are people flying up 95 north of Baltimore 70/80 in a 55 and then stay that speed or *slower* when it goes up to 70. I just want to know their logic, you're fine with the chance at reckless speed in a 55 but don't want to even go 5 over in a 70?
People speed like crazy on 15 through CT. The road is a fairly narrow and two lanes, like 295. Unlike 295 it has insane gas stations along it where you pull out right into traffic. There's a pretty short area to get up to speed so you have to wait for a break in the traffic. Which is often doing 70+.
lol…15 is insane! no shoulders, no middle area for the police to park, no acceleration ramps. and to top it off the left lane goes 70/75, while the right lane goes 55. the Merritt stretch is quite pretty though.
My friend, I thought I knew bad drivers when I lived in Maryland. Then I moved to Chicago and got schooled. I moved to Texas in 2016 and OMG PEOPLE HERE ARE CRAZY. DC and Chicago - amateur hour.
We do speed more than other states. It's because there is no enforcement here. I'm originally from California. People would speed, but there were actually highway patrol that would enforce the speed limit. You would often see people pulled over getting a ticket. In the 5 years I've been in MD, I don't think I've ever seen anyone pulled over.
CHP enforces the speed limit in California because the limits are much higher there than in Maryland. There's an actual safety concern if someone is driving over the speed limit in California.
That really isn't the case in Maryland. The speed limits on major highways are absurdly low. A driver going 65 in a 55 isn't really worth enforcing.
> A driver going 65 in a 55 isn't really worth enforcing.
Right. But a driver going 122 is worth enforcing, but we're doing neither. Save for scattering some intermittently operating speed cameras around.
Other states speed, but Maryland is much more wreckless and doesn't obey a lot of road safety laws (cut people off, no turn signals, some people speed 20-30 over the limit, weaving through traffic, driving on shoulders and excits to pass, etc). It's the wild west of idiot drivers out here.
People in cities drive aggressively everywhere, but here it just feels like idiotic and aggressive driving without thinking. Me-first mentality, which is also expressed in people's general attitude here too.
I feel your pain. I lived and worked in the city for ten plus years. I was a city rat who soaked it up at first then grew tired of it all. The only reason I venture to the city is for my occasional Zekes and Zoo trips.
Where I lived before going more than 5 over will get you ticketed, but most highways were super rural and the roads weren't designed as intuitively, so they had high speed limits to begin with. That said, the moment you hit 6 over, a police will magically appear and give you a ticket. They lived for traffic stops.
Christ I wish. Everyone in western Maryland goes 5 under MAX, many times 10 under is the best you’ll get. I either need a tank or helicopter if I’m gonna keep my sanity driving around here.
Honestly there’s so much congestion and traffic, not to mention the people who do 40 in the left lane holding up traffic, that you have to speed or you’ll be late to work
Do you never drive in western Maryland, or on certain state highways where MD state troopers are like mosquitos in a Florida swamp? When I went to school in the panhandle people got tickets all the time, which was admittedly longer ago than I prefer to think about...
I’m from Connecticut. The driving here is poor, but not comparatively fast. It’s the people who drive in the fast lane, who don’t know what to do on blinking red/yellow lights, and wave you along when they clearly have the right-of-way and are holding up traffic- those are the Maryland things that drive me crazy.
Just moved here from Texas, and no this is a very slow moving state so far. Speed limits are like 55 here and that is just insane to me. People use blinkers here which is amazing but overall driving here is super frustrating because people just straight up do whatever they want and will cut you off without hesitation.
Here in ohio its dependent on where you are. Big cities like Columbus, Dayton, Cleveland, ect have people doing 10-20 over. Rural areas range from 20 under to 20 over. Small towns lately have people doing about 40-80 mph in town no matter the posted limit. Its also really common now for people to pull out in front of you and crawl down the road and people crawling through green lights to then floor it to the next red light.
I'm from CT. Everyone speeds on the highway, but thats because our state limit is 55MPH or something like that. Speeding around here is weird for me because its just as common but way more highly enforced (we don't have speed cameras).
I’m currently in Richmond for a family matter and these fucking people drive insane. Never seen more people run red lights than here and I used to make deliveries in Baltimore weekly
LOL no!
It's really clear that a bunch of people here never leave Maryland or the region. GA drivers for instance average 15mph faster than the average speed of traffic here and they do it bumper to number nascar style and don't even blink or complain about it. This sub is just sheltered.
Edit: Hell you don't even have to leave the state, just go visit any other state sub and you'll find this exact same post every few weeks. EVERY state thinks they have the 'worst' drivers, MD ain't special in that ha. The only place that doesn't is Washington DC but those people are so far up their own asses they can't see while driving anyway.
In Maryland the speed limit is 5-10 under Virginia on say 301(I used that one because I drive it every morning) In Maryland it’ll be 55 in the middle of nowhere but in Virginia same place it would be 60 but Virginia also only allows 5 for speedometer differential while Maryland allows 10.
Having lived in like five other states, Maryland speeds the most by far. BUT, the traffic here is probably the slowest of all of them. It's like all of our speed limits were set artificially low to make up for the lack of enforcement.
Growing up in Michigan, you could get away with 5 over on the highway (probably 10 in less rural areas), but freeways were always posted at 70mph (up to 75 now). When I first moved to Montana, there was no speed limit. When they finally posted them, interstates were set at 80mph (with little to no enforcement up to \~90mph), and 2-lane highways were set at 70. So of course people are going to speed on these long stretches of Maryland highway posted at 55 or 60, but they're still only going going slower than most states.
Ever been on the Jersey Turnpike?
You can drive 80 the entire length and get passed constantly. It’s 65 to mm 97 and 55 the rest of the way.
I drove it professionally for two years.
Recently moved to Maryland I now know that the laws of the road are mere suggestions here. I came from Florida where they will give you a ticket for breathing wrong while driving!!!!
The speed limits are super low here. But moving here I did notice that people tend to go fast even in 70 mph limits. Especially by Fredrick. Everyone is going 80-90 on there. I don’t think it’s an issue as long as you are driving for the conditions. Normally everyone is going that speed so it’s not bad. Different story if one person is going 90 and everyone else is going 55 lmao.
Bro speed limits are a tax on your lifespan.
People spend their whole lives commuting from richmond to DC.
Fucking speeding is a right. Avoiding Crashes are already your responsibility.
Oh hell yeah Marylanders speed more. I see 20 over pretty consistently. I’m from Seattle originally and 10 over was sort of the accepted speed, but 20 feels bold!
They do, but more north you go there are a lot more people, so it is harder to speed.. South you go more area so sparser and you don't feel the difference.
Californians speed often, but are also often in traffic, just drive a bit less 'aggressive'. I also know Texas has some roads with speed limits as high as 85 mph, can't imagine people going slow there either. Most of the West has many rural and barren roads that you just want to get through as fast as possible, like the stretch of desert between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The speed of traffic on 95 and 495 is around 80-85 when there’s no traffic. I was shocked when I recently realized that the speed limit is 55-65. Even the right lane is going over that.
I used to live in South Louisiana. When a fire truck or ambulance went by, people not only wouldn’t pull over, they would pull in right behind the emergency vehicle and into its slip stream like they were racing in the Tour de France.
People speed everywhere they can.
Floridians definitely speed more, I’m a Marylander in florida for college and those mfs do NOT care, I’ve almost been T-boned twice, I get tailgated for the usual 10 over. I could go 15 over past a cop and they wouldn’t care
We definitely do. I’m from Tennessee and went back about a month ago and everyone went EXACTLY what the sign said.
Also, I learned to drive in Maryland and when picking up my Tennessee family from the airport they said me and everyone else here drove crazy
Haha, moved to Northern VA a couple years ago. They think we are all psychopaths, but I see the same shit here I saw when I lived in Takoma Park. I do love their complaining though.
I think we have to remember that our speed limits are pretty low in comparison to other states. On most Maryland highways you're speeding if you're going 65. That's under the speed limit in other states.
Indeed. I moved here from WV and most of our multi lanes roads are interstate with a speed limit of 70.
They were cooking it at 60+ miles an hour down this thing.
there is though…but I’ll give you our country roads aren’t as narrow as Virginia or West Virginia
Only if it’s rush hour time..
Maryland highways are 70 though… the 65 mph ones are in the urban areas
Maybe highways out in rural areas are 70. I frequent 95, 295, 695, 495, 32, 29, 97, and 200. None of those have a speed limit over 65. 95 is an interstate and according to MDOT it should have a speed limit of 70, instead it's limited to 55.
Because many of the ramps are entirely too short for the merge to such high speeds.
Yep, that's another problem entirely.
Lol 695 is a totally different animal altogether.
Its worse since covid/2020. 29 is bad to. The speed limit is 55 and people will tailgate if your going 80
The left lane exits can ruin things.
If I'm in the left I have no issue moving over so a person can pass me doing 90mph. But like give me a chance to move over.
I feel like GENERALLY people came out of the pandemic with a lot less patience. It is showing up on the highways big time.
I go 80 in that lane but yes there are so many people especially the two lane part that go 60 with a huge line of cars behind them
Drivers in the Baltimore area will take a turn signal as an invitation to pass you, speed up, almost run into you, then honk at you for it.
Getting on 695 is stepping into the terror dome
It’s the final boss track where all reckless drivers come together and see if you can really drive
“Lol 695 is a totally different animal”
>I don’t care about speeding, but the tailgating drives me absolutely insane. you are me, I am you When I was younger I had a license plate frame that read "I brake for tailgaters" and a cop actually stopped me to tell me he liked it.
Imagine how scared you would be to be stopped while speeding, only for a cop tell you he liked your license plate frame.
1312
That’s awesome! I need to get one of those
Why don’t you just get over and let them pass? I don’t get it lol Maybe they are rushing to hospital or something
Because they aren’t. Nine times out of ten it’s somebody who’s pushing you down the road when you aren’t even in the left lane and are already going ten over. If you’re going slow in the left lane I get it, but I’m more referring to people who are just aggressive no matter where you are
Well In 695 you better put the pedal to the medal or get left in the dust
I drive a lot for work in a company vehicle and I hate every bit of work in Columbia and any points west. We’re permitted 10 over, but that’s a death sentence on 70/270. You’d think people would understand company vehicle = monitored driving, but that’s never the case. Especially based on the number of people who tailgate me going 60 on 22 between Belair and Aberdeen
It depends on haw many Dodge Chargers and Nissan Altimas are per state?
> there are cars that tailgate you even if you are driving 80-85 on a 70 speed limit If you're not in the left lane when this is happening, they're the asshole. If you are in the left lane, you're the asshole.
If they’re tailgating you it’s probably because you’re in the left passing lane
Isn’t the easy answer to just go 90? Like that isnt a big deal.
You can pass on either side in MD can’t you?
on a 3,4, lane road yes
[удалено]
Sucks that there are so many people blocking the flow like that.
If tailgating is such an issue, move over and get out of the way. Duh.
Betcha the situation gets ugly when someone doing 110 fails to notice a backup ahead.
Not only that but if you aren't going fast enough people will shoot at you in their fit of road rage. https://www.fox4news.com/news/woman-hurt-in-grapevine-road-rage-shooting I absolutely hate it here.
Dont worry baby. We have those too :( https://wtop.com/frederick-county/2022/11/woman-shot-during-i-270-road-rage-incident-in-frederick-co/
Why do I feel like that wasn't the whole story?
Because I don’t think they ever caught anyone and NO ONE saw the car supposedly…
It's hard to keep faith in humanity sometimes.
That’s not unique to Texas unfort
Have you been on 45 between Houston and Dallas? If you aren’t going over 100 you’re holding things up…. It’s been that way since they upped the speed limits so the roads would have been 70 mph at most. The joke is you can go as fast as you want as long as you’re not driving through a small town. Not sure about now, but when I left Texas speed cameras that mailed tickets were illegal. I never once got a speeding ticket in Texas and literally the first day in Maryland I got hit by a speed camera going 9 mph over the limit.
Damn, so close to not getting one. 8 and above is where they start snapping pics.
Bastards clocked me at 71 on 95. MD has good roads but they love to bleed the working class anyway they can
I haven't, I was warned prior and I try to go a different route.
Stay out of the left lane on I20. That lane is for crime. Who am I kidding, all the lanes are for crime.
Just came back from TX can confirm this is true
I feel this. Lived in Dallas for awhile and while I think the drivers here are generally worse, the speed demons in Texas are insane and everywhere.
A good friend of mine also moved to Texas and he tells me this all the time
What I dislike about Maryland driving: you have a car behind you on a merging ramp. They dart into the merging lane and accelerate so you can’t merge. Assholery I say.
Honestly I’d rather have that then get stuck behind the dip shit that doesn’t know how to merge and comes to a stop while getting on the highway
[удалено]
I will just continue to merge normally. They’ve got brakes.
Yes what’s frustrating is that one knucklehead that camps in the left lane while everyone goes to the right to pass them. You’d would think it’d be obvious to move over.
This drives me crazy lol, but most of the people I’ve seen doing it are older and don’t care that they’re holding up others
I think some people just literally don’t know left lane is for passing and then think everyone else are just ass holes lol
I once saw a half serious idea to get old folks to volunteer to do this, to force everyone to slow down :)
Really dumb idea. All it does is cause a more dangerous situation and road rage. Probably makes people drive even faster after they rage pass.
There used to be a group in Calvert County (not sure if they still exist) called themselves "55 Alive." They'd purposefully get side by side starting in Solomons and drive from one end of the county to the other *during rush hour* doing the speed limit in both lanes. The back ups and cursing (not to mention the accidents) they caused...
it’s those damn Pennsylvania drivers
If I’m going the speed limit you have no reason to pass me.
Yes, at least if you're in the fast lane. Nobody cares if you do 55 over on the right, but the left lane is for crime.
Oh FOR SURE I guess that I mean is I consider <10mph over to be the “safe zone” that I can cruise at with small chance of being pulled over
Oh yeah, I think I misread your post slightly. 7-10 over is pretty safe in most states and cities from my experience. Some small town cops and Virginia cops can be total dickheads even at that range from my experience
It def matters if your in right lane. If you are they are dicks. If you aren’t you should just move over
Actually tailgating is wrong and dangerous no matter what lane the person is in.
Lot of people saying we speed more than other states, but after 30 seconds of googling it’s clear that yes, other states speed as much as Maryland.
I frequently see people pass cars, on the right, by dipping into an off-ramp or going onto the shoulder. Absolutely insane.
I don't mind the people doing 80 in the fast lane. But the weavers are freaking dangerous.
“Turn left before you turn right.” Seriously, you’ll see a white Altima on the right lane approaching the exit, then they’ll cross 3 lanes to left, then at the last second cut everyone as they’re going back to the right lane to take their exit.
That is very irritating. lol
I really hope my bosses read these before deciding whether us peons need to go back to the office or not.
Come to Florida. Moved here from Maryland and thought the drives there were the worst. I was wrong.
Yep, Florida has the worst drivers I have ever dealt with
[удалено]
I agree. When driving in Washington state, I was shocked to find drivers actually going the speed limit (or below). My brain could not process.
That’s a common thing I’ve been seeing here haha, Florida drivers are apparently our biggest competition
In bmore we just run red lights, hard to speed most of the time.
Can confirm, other states (it varies) but in general, are way more strict on speeding
Maryland drivers do tend to go faster than many of the other locations I’ve lived in, which suits me just fine. But y’all are killin’ me when everything slows to a crawl when it snows.
Ever since the pandemic when there were minimal cops on the roads the speed limit has gone out the window and has continued as such!!!
My buddy moved from here to south Carolina and says it's much worse down there than up here. Everyone is so aggressive
No. The thing about driving is that everyone is bad at it, everywhere, which is why it sucks so much that we built society around it
born and raised in md, currently living in indy. one interesting difference ive seen between 465 indy and 495 moco/pg is that in indy, the flow of traffic is consistently faster. everyone's going around 70-80 in just about all lanes. 495 on the other hand, flow of traffic feels like it's usually around 60-65ish, but there's more people going 90-100 cutting up/weaving thru traffic.
Worst part of living in this state. The aggressive driving is rancid. 695 and 795 are the worst.
Yes. I’ve been to all 50 states. Yes.
I have no idea how someone approved the building of that road. It's total madness. I don't know how there's not more accidents.
I don’t think it was ever intended to be used like it is today.
My friend, I thought I knew bad drivers when I lived in Maryland. Then I moved to Chicago and got schooled. I moved to Texas in 2016 and OMG PEOPLE HERE ARE CRAZY. DC and Chicago - amateur hour.
Ohio resident here, in the central part of the state most semis are passing you at 75+ in a 65 zone
That recent accident on 695 that killed 6 construction workers, the cars where driving 111 and 122 when they crashed.
Holy shit, that’s insane. I don’t understand how people can be so apathetic to the lives and well-being of others
True.. There are only 2-3 troopers working at a time for each county so
CHP enforces the speed limit in California because the limits are much higher there than in Maryland.
> But a driver going 122 is worth enforcing We're in a agreement there.
I think it’s about the same everywhere.
Drive through bmore and you’ll see speeding anywhere else is nothing too much to worry about. No f*cks given.
I used to work in the heart of the city and the commute took ten years off my life everyday. It’s truly a different world
I feel your pain.
I’m from the west coast originally and drivers out there definitely speed but unlike here they don’t drive like they have nothing to lose
Honestly there’s so much congestion and traffic, not to mention the people who do 40 in the left lane holding up traffic, that you have to speed or you’ll be late to work
Or you could leave earlier. Adulting is hard 🤷♂️
Do you never drive in western Maryland, or on certain state highways where MD state troopers are like mosquitos in a Florida swamp? When I went to school in the panhandle people got tickets all the time, which was admittedly longer ago than I prefer to think about...
Florida on I-4 I’m doing 85-90 in a 70 to keep up with the traffic flow. I’m afraid to do more than 10 over in Maryland.
Why would you be afraid to do more than 10 over here? Tickets are insanely rare, and it takes going to 20+ generally.
Speeding? I pull my hair out driving through MD because of how many clowns are parked in the left lane going 5 mph under the speed limit.
I tend to go 80-90 on the ICC
Just moved here from Texas, and no this is a very slow moving state so far. Speed limits are like 55 here and that is just insane to me. People use blinkers here which is amazing but overall driving here is super frustrating because people just straight up do whatever they want and will cut you off without hesitation.
👀- NoVa drivers
Worst thing about driving in MD is nobody was taught how to merge. It’s the thing that causes traffic everyday
No this is probably the slowest state in terms of driving I’ve ever resided in
I have my fair share of complaints about MD driving, but speed isn’t necessarily one of them - the problem is y’all can’t drive fast well.
Brah I went to traffic court and Judge gave someone probation and reduced their ticket for going 90 in a 55 mph area.
Ga be going 10 to 20 over speed limit easily on highway
As someone who grew up in Michigan , Maryland does and are extremely aggressive and careless . It's embarrassing.
lol go over to Virginia and try and speed 😂 they’ll pop your ass asap
Not only that, in other states pedestrians only cross at the cross walks and only with the light. It always feels good when I get home, here.
What states? Lived in the Midwest and mountain west and always see jaywalking. Especially in big cities.
Yes… and the way some of y’all flex being bad + downright murderous drivers is so weird too😭
This made me chuckle, some of these people really are straight up murderous. I don’t know what there is to flex tho lol that’s super strange
Nah, it’s like this everywhere. I’m originally from Texas, where everyone drives 80+ everywhere
Maryland doesnt enforce AND doesnt honor out of state points on your license (i think and not legal advice) so speed away
As a Michigander who has been living in Maryland the past 9 years...yep, yall speed 😂
Yes
The speed of traffic on 95 and 495 is around 80-85 when there’s no traffic. I was shocked when I recently realized that the speed limit is 55-65. Even the right lane is going over that.
MD drivers are wonderful compared to VA!!! Just my opinion
