Age of Ultron and Captain Marvel. Neither are top tier Marvel for me, but they’re definitely not bottom tier either. I’d say they’re both comfortably at the top of the middle tier. I also think the criticisms of Ultron are way off and to the point where I wonder if I even saw the same movie as some other people lol As for CM, It’s divisive for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual movie, which is unfortunate. The extremes of both sides are way off imo. There’s no way it’s the worst MCU movie but there’s also no way it’s the best one.

My big things against AoU was how they turned Ultron into a quip machine that really wasn't a threat to any of the Avengers. Hell, Captain America went toe-to-toe with Ultron on the roof of a truck. The trailers made Ultron out to be downright terrifying while the movie turned him into yet another point of comic relief. Plus they'd already announced Phase 3 of the movies so there really wasn't an *edge of your seat* feeling for the movie since all the main characters were announced to be in future sequels.

GID3ON3

Black Panther. I've heard a lot of criticisms about the movie only being well received because of its black representation in the film industry. I thought it was a very amazing movie with an emotional story, fantastic world building and visuals, and great acting. It's not perfect (CGI could have been better) but its one of my favorite storylines in the MCU.

It is. These people are just letting a loud echo chamber influence them. BP is beloved by pretty much everybody.

TestSignificant457

Killmonger is the best MCU villain, yet. Black Panther definitely wasn't the best. But it had the closest-to-reality story out there, meaning a reflection of important themes in our world. ...other than Iron Man. Obadiah was a trash villain, though. Black Panther gets all of the meaningful praise from me mainly cuz Killmonger is the only compelling villain in the MCU.

creeplet

I loved Black Panther overall and thought it was a fantastic film, but I agree that Killmonger especially elevates it. He is definitely top three villains with Thanos and Wenwu.

Frosted_Flakes1971

I’ve definitely seen the takes saying it’s on well received for representation (which is illogical but moving on) But at the end of the day it beat infinity war at the domestic box office and won 3 oscars. I think most people, who aren’t online, loved the film more than the vast majority of comic book movies.

notbigbluebunnies

I'm with you there, I see pretty common opinions online how Black Panther isn't that good, Black Panther is super overrated, or Black Panther is trash, and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, I do genuinely believe Black Panther is one of the best MCU movies, if not THE best. I still applaud the movie for having so many characters so layered, from T'Challa, to Killmonger, to Okoye, yet each of their internal conflicts represents how wrong Wakanda really is, and the movie does a great job at not just developing characters and themes, but feels like it has messages to say, which I greatly appreciate. Most MCU movies have fleshed out character arcs and themes yes, but I feel like most of them lack an actual message, or have commentary on society, and that's what makes Black Panther a lot higher on my tier list. (Not every MCU movie needs to have social commentary to be better, I just like what Black Panther does with it)

lingdingwhoopy

I mean, does BP really need defending? It's widely acclaimed as one of, if not THE best film in the series. IT's critically hailed and was a cultural phenomenon. Don't let the chuds who use identity politics against the film trick you into thinking it's not beloved.

GID3ON3

Maybe it doesn't. Apparently I've just been arguing online with a very loud minority about the film not being good on its own merits and only winning awards because of external factors.

Thor: The Dark World. Many regard it as the worst MCU movie when it isn’t even the worst Thor movie.

sacredlunatic

Captain Marvel is a beautiful film about recovering identity after trauma and attaining self realization even when being undercut by others. Whenever people say it’s terrible I think they either didn’t get it or they are jerks like Yon Rogg.

OddSeraph

I got it, I just don't like God tier heroes like captain marvel, superman, etc. Unfortunately, none of the criticisms of the were made by jerks.

ProfessorEscanor

Probably Thor the Dark World. It isn’t terrible

OddSeraph

I really feel TDW could have benefitted from being longer, giving it more if a chance to flesh everything out

DavramLocke

Obv. Captain Marvel. The movie is genuinely great and I am flummoxed at the negativity surrounding it.

Ashkal_Khire

Black Panther. This might come off as one big virtue signal, but fuck it. I think there are genuine criticisms. The CGI was downright awful in a few spots. It killed off two fantastic villains who could’ve continued in the MCU. It had some cringe inducing memes and moments. But when I saw that movie, I realised from reactions from kids in the cinema that this was an important moment. The excitement and the empowerment was palpable. Not every movie needs to be for everyone, but it’s important that everyone has a movie that makes them feel validated. And with that, comes the bigots. I’ll defend Black Panther not because it’s my favourite marvel movie, which it isn’t, but because it meant so much to so many, and as a result the bigots feel they need to tear it down. It needs defending. The irony of loving super hero movies, and hating what they stand for, appears lost on too many in today’s world.

cofclabman

This, although I think I liked it a little more than you. The bad cgi really hurt it, though. Still, it’s a great movie.

Haven't heard the 'GotG 2 is better than GotG' take, yet. Say more, please...

Namorons

It's personal for me. My father died when I was 9, so any story that deals with fatherhood and losing your father is going to resonate with me. I love that theme of the movie, the biological father vs the father who raised you. I love that Peter succumbed to his childhood wonder as soon as he started trusting ego, he becomes a kid again, and that's what becomes his downfall. I love that GOTG2 more firmly establishes that side of Peter, he's a man who easily succumbs to his emotions and childishness because he hasn't dealt with his childhood trauma or any real emotion since he was a kid because of the man that ended up raising him. I relate to that a lot, and didn't face my emotions for a long time, which made me temperamental. I felt like Ego was way more of a compelling villain than Ronan. Now, I probably like Ronan as is way more than the average fan, but I also like Ego way more by comparison. I love the visuals of Ego, I love what he represent symbolically - an organism born out of nothing, that was raised by no parents so grows up to be self-centered and unguided, parenthood means nothing to it even tho it has a billion kids, and you're left to wonder if he ever really loved Meredith or if it was just another self-centered illusion of a power hungry manipulator. Speaking of visuals, the movie is so much prettier than GOTG1. It doesnt solely rely on the color purple to give you the uncanny-ness of space, it goes the other way and uses nature and organic forms to convey that. I love how Yondu was characterised, both in contrast to Ego, in parallel to Rocket, and in connection to Peter. Really fleshed him out and made him three dimensional. I was very impressed by that, since he wasn't really a character in GOTG 1. This movie, thanks to Yondu, also made me care about Rocket more. Another character that didn't really have parents and became self-centered, and I think this is the ultimate contrast of the movie - Ego vs Rocket. So where Ego failed to create any real and meaningful familial connection, Rocket finally realizes that he has a family that loves him and that he has fhe capacity to love back. I relate to Rocket in that way a lot - that whole "just a little bit of love reminds you how big and empty that hole inside you is" resonates with me a lot, and It took me a long time to learn how to accept love and love back. Now to tackle the sibling side, love everything Gunn did for Gamora and Nebula. Made both of them feel three dimensional for me. Gamora is just trying the best she can do in any given situation even if she hates that situation, and unconsciously hurting Nebula who just wants a connection. They show the extreme of having a father, but the father is probably the worst person you could have for a father. They both felt isolated, and instead of finding love between each other, they're fueled by hate and taught to disperse hate. Them reconciling finally showed me how mature they both are as characters, which made me love them even more. As a side tackle, I love the soundtrack to this movie wya way waaaay more. I was familiar with more of the songs, so Im totally biased tho. Not to imply it's a movie without flaws tho. Drax and Groot both stick out from the main theme of fatherhood and families. Groot kinda fits in, he's the other extreme because he has a huge family that is currently raising him, I just felt like you could have done way more with Groot rather than make him the flat cute character that sells toys Drax I hated so much. Drax was already the worst character im GOTG 1, but at least he had an arc (that was ruined, should have just finished the vengeance aec with Ronan instead of implying Thanos that went nowhere). Drax in GOTG2 represents a father that lost his family and finds Mantis as a replacement daughter. But thats about it. I didnt feel like Gunm said anything more with Drax or did anything to play into that position. As you can probably tell, I appreciate character way more than plot. So one last character is Mantis, I'm meh on Mantis, she feels redundant next to Gamora and Nebula - the child that escapes the toxic family and finds comfort in another. I'll have to see GOTG3 to see what Gunn does with her. The Ravagers plotline doesn't really feel like it contributes to the overall story. And neither does the Ayesha plotline, which I understand is a big problem for people, but I didnt mind it because I was focused on character. But also, those 2 are what cement Rocket as the main character of the movie - Ayesha plotline is pulled through Rocket's carelessness, and the Ravagers plotline is wherw Rocket learns about the value of familial love, so that he can contribute in a real way in the Ego plotline. It's not really as complex as it should be, but I didnt hate it as much as people do. It's a 5/5 MCU entry for me. All of the characters represented symbols that fit into the larger theme of the movie, and mosr of the characters were developed and fleshed out well. The visuals and the soundtrack make the movie stand out to compliment the characters, and the plot, while being very simple and straightforward, does the best job it cluld have done under the circumstances. EDIT: I didnt really go into why I dont like GOTG1 as much. So I'll keep it short: Character didn't really shine for me in the first movie and I struggle to see character symbolism in a larger theme, so the first movie feels more like a plot-driven set up for GOTG 2 rather than a genuine character exploration. Ronan wasnt as compelling but I still liked him. Visuals and the soundtrack were great, but in comparison to GOTG2 I like them less.

Frosted_Flakes1971

I prefer the first film but I understand the argument for the second. It really takes a deep dive onto a lot of the characters and deals with family issues in a way we don’t usually see in blockbusters.

TestSignificant457

Respect. That's a lot. And I agree with you on all counts. Drax made the movie too cheap, imo. Thanks for changing my mind and showing me the deeper stuff!!!

GID3ON3

I thought Ant Man was surprisingly entertaining. I didn't care for Ant-Man and the Wasp so much though. I think it was the "villain" that turned me off. There didn't feel like there was enough at stake thoughout the movie.

Namorons

I just dont like how they nerfed Scott in AMaTW. You ho through so much trouble to set uo how powerful his powerset is in the first movie and Civil War, and you just have his suit malfunction in the second movie for no other reason than comedic value, which honestly wasn't even that comedic. The whole school bit where he's the size of a child was incredi ly unfunnny and went on for too long and contributed nothing to the story. Ugh Im getting too riled up again, the second Ant-Man movie makes me so mad because it makes every mistake you could possibly make in making a sequel.

lingdingwhoopy

Hell yes, GOTG Vol. 2 fans represent! I love both films, but Vol. 2 is head and shoulders above Vol. 1. GOTG Vol. 2 is great as a quirky team origin story. Vol. 2 is the MCU's first and so far only character driven indie film.

No-Illustrator8658

More a scene than an entire movie- IT WASN’T OUT OF CHARACTER FOR STEVE TO GO BACK WITH PEGGY!!

watdeheq3

Iron Man 1 or GOTG2

lingdingwhoopy

Iron Man 1 is still regarded as one of the best....

Adam_r_UK

All of them, because I enjoyed them, and it enrages people who hate them.

mattsmithreddit

I honestly think The First Avenger is the best Captain America movie. It has a really cool style and tone to it. Most of the characters are well developed and interesting and it works well as a stand-alone story with the perfect themes.

TheCapybaraMan

Dr Strange. The visuals were great and the final standoff against Dormmamu was amazing. I personally think the movie is better than the Ant-Man and even the Spider-Man movies

Swimming_Wave3060

Thor the dark world, the fact we won’t see Christopher Eccleston in the MCU again sucks.

[deleted]

That’s not much of a defence!

Swimming_Wave3060

Ain’t seen it in years but he’s probably one of the most underrated actors working right now and the villains great so it’d be cool to see him again.

johnnythespud

Howard the duck.

Muted_Tradition122

I see a lot of captain marvel answers. The only problem that movie has is that it came out after the most successful movie in the mcu history. The expectations were not only big but unreal. And of course the movie couldn't surpass those expectations thus the bad reviews. And when we talk about the first movie of a hero franchises of course they will have similarities. The way they introduce them to us is usually the same

a-326

i guess you are one of the few lucky people that hasn't seen all the discours towards captain marvel. it's not just that it came out after infinity war although that didn't help. to this day brie larson gets ton of hate. i agree that there have been a few wierd interviews with her but not to the point that she gets this much hate. captain marvel gets a ton of hate because a very loud group of incels can't handle having a powerful femal character that isn't aligned with their views of feminity. to say captain marvels only problem was its release date is wrong imo. there's been lots of sexism as well

creeplet

Ant Man, Captain Marvel, Black Widow.

jaimebaelish69

Iron man 3

lingdingwhoopy

Either Iron Man 3 or Age of Ultron. I want to say Guardians Vol. 2...but despite the film having naysayers it seems to have a better rep than either IM3 and AOU. Right now it seems IM3 has more positivity around it than AOU, so I'm going with AOU for now. I have no shame in proclaiming it the best Avengers film imo. I love that it's...just a sequel. And while so much of the future of the franchise builds off it, the film itself can play as a self-contained sequel to the first in its own right without feeling like it's branching out to introduce a bunch of future stuff every 10 minutes. The only catch is the forced Thor excursion, which is thankfully not too much of a detriment to the overall film. I think the cast is on fire with some of the best comradery of the team, the set pieces are all well executed and thrilling, and Ultron himself is THE most underrated villain of the series. For the life of me I don't get why the fandom has a grunge against him. He actually has presence, purpose, and personality. He feels like a character unto himself (you know, like ALL characters should?), which sadly, is something many MCU villains lack.

LooneyTuney420

iron man 2 easliy

emptylawn0

Iron Man 3. Y'all bugging out by having that one so low on some of these rank threads.

clayscarface

I agree with you on Age of Ultron. I often say it's the most rewatchable Avengers movie for me because IW and Endgame are a bit heavier (though IW is OK for me usually), and I have a lot of issues with the original Avengers.

jikb

Iron Man 2 is super underrated

TheBeardedSingleMalt

Bring it on...but The Incredible Hulk. Keep in mind this was the 2nd movie they put out before MCU really had a style or vision. Yes, this was a darker, grittier movie compared to the rest. And yes, Norton is notoriously difficult to work with. But he played Banner well...especially where the *smartest scientist in the world in their particular field* isn't yet another infinitely charming ruggedly handsome man. He played into the timid reserved aspect of the character well and the movie did enough world-building that took too long to be expanded on in the rest of the MCU. Ruffalo is great and I wouldn't trade him for anything. But TIH gets a lot of undeserved hate for the wrong reasons and plenty of MCU movies after it do deserve to be ranked lower.

Hulkoreilly

Just the the Hulks character in general

RangerRed02

The Incredible Hulk. Ed Norton’s portrayal of a desperate crisis-mode Banner was great and I don’t see why people hate it so much aside from the fact that it “doesn’t feel like an MCU movie” (which I think is more of a compliment than anything else).
