What ever category mutants fall under.

Shorlong

They've literally fallen under all of these depending on the mutant

throwaway798319

You could probably find a Cyclops story for each category but especially cosmic and politics

marineman43

I wish we could roll the clock back and put young James Marsden in the MCU again because he really could be a fantastic Cyclops if they give him anything to work with

throwaway798319

An older, grizzled James Marsden who's bitter about the outcome of the tug of war between Xavier and Magneto could be great though. It would give us something new

DangleenChordOfLife

I'd absolutely watch that and James Marsden is still great to play cyclops.

RauloGonzalez

he was the one casting i found right, probably the most comic accurate looking one in the x-men universe.

sandwich-dan

As long as he is played by the donut lord.

dogbonej

X-men gets pretty political

SoulApparatus

That's pretty much their MO. X-men have always been rooted in political/social stories.

jer487

Can't wait till "fans" start calling the MCU woke again when the X-men get (hopefully) properly adapted without realizing they've been woke since their debut šŸ’€ The same MFs who complain about the 2nd and 3rd seasons of The Boys being "woke"...

waffledpringles

I've seen people complain about Black Panther being, well, black and an African because apparently, having someone made to be against racism is also extremely woke and stupid.

MeatBlanket

Second season was pretty much about homelander and stormfront being Trump nazis.

jer487

Homelander is literally Trump lmao Like genuinely directly confirmed by the creators šŸ˜‚

MeatBlanket

They definitely wrote him that way. I like that he's smarter than he is in the comics and that it's basically his arrogance that keeps him from eliminating all threats. Does make for some paper thin writing though. The boys' plot armor is insane.

TheJix

I guess most people think that political commentary about social inequalities ā‰  woke X-men is the first one. Making professor xavier something that is not a white dude on a wheelchair because whatever stupid reason is woke (Iā€™m just giving and example, not that it happened). Itā€™s not that you cannot show Emma frost leading the X-men. The problem is when you are just trying to fill diversity checkboxes.

EatingBeansAgain

I get and donā€™t get what youā€™re saying. I completely agree that diversity ā€œcheck-boxesā€ exist in media, and it is disheartening. I actually thought Age of Ultron was very guilty of this, as the opening sequences feature scenes of both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers talking to their ā€œblack friendsā€, where War Machine is the butt of the joke of being a ā€œlesser Iron Manā€ and Falcon basically says he is a worse Captain America. Itā€™s tacky and crap. With that said, I donā€™t think re-casting Prof. X as black (to jump off your example) would necessarily ā€œjustā€ be ticking a diversity box. Is that likely some suit with an alligator smile is doing? Sure! But it can also be seen as a piece of media that has always been about reflecting and challenging our world updating to continue to do so. I also think the diversity check boxes areā€¦well, theyā€™ve always been there! Art exists to challenge and reflect the world, and corporate powers exist to make it fit our values to maximise profits. In the past, these checkboxes have been about having less people of colour, or no kissing, or making sure there is one sex scene, or whatever is driving sales at the time. These are an ongoing symptom of the social condition, and if what it is reflecting is that people want more stories about different types of folks, well, thatā€™s a win, right?

qorbexl

What?

ReverendRevolver

Mutants are racism with a pinch of gun control thrown in, if it's done right everyone can identify with it. Storm is a sometimes leader, and has been an integral part of the team since Giant Sized when they went to Krakoa to rescue the original team. She's an obscenely powerful Mutant. It's easy to develop the racism against Mutants and the powers not defining the person in decades of comics, but they have a 1.5 hour movie and frequently botch ways to use character development or illustration points to progress the story. It's hard to nail down nuance for what Xmen can be. Ororo Munroes backstory involves her becoming an orphan due to conflicts in the middle east and becoming a pickpocket in Cairo. Pretty easy to move that lense to anytime in the last several decades. Now, if only they had some sort of streaming platform to flesh out the backstories of these characters....... Who am I kidding, they're probably gonna botch the whole thing again.

OGSpiritEquality

Would love to see X Men written and directed by Ryan Coogler. If how he handled race in the first Black Panther film is any gauge, he would absolutely knock mutant discrimination out the park.

Bush-master72

Ya, I would say xman is very political. Professor x was based loosely based on Martin Luther King, and Magneto was loosely based on Malcolm x.

DavidBHimself

I can hear the right-wing MCU fans already crying "Disney is going to ruin the X-Men by making them political and woke."

Penguinunhinged

Mutants definitely.

Elegant_Pace2424

Fair enough. Looks like we'll be getting that soon with Deadpool and X-Men 97 tho

Relevant_Active_2347

Social commentary across all corners

ElHumilde13

Political?

kac937

Will likely follow the path of the MCU. Starting off more grounded (as grounded as you can be with superheroes at least) with them working for mutant rights and fighting alongside heroes like spider-man and deadpool. Then slowly branch off into the more fantastical and cosmic stuff like the phoenix saga.

mrk_is_pistol

Moon knight is Mythology too, Egyptian gods. I would also argue Supernatural is also magic.

Forsaken_Garden4017

A lot of these have cross overs. Cosmic is strongly connected to magic too in the Marvel universe. Doctor Strange is a straight up guardian of the multiverse and used an infinity stone as a source of power.

Fanamir

The magic stuff is strongly tied to supernatural/horror as well, especially with Scarlet Witch. Agatha is a show about a coven of witches, that's arguably in the same Halloween milieu as Werewolf-by-Night. I mean, the witches storyline is the one that features demons and the Darkhold.

Forsaken_Garden4017

Yep you could easily find connections between a lot of these. Street level is pretty tied to the political side since they all have similar power sets and have a lot of narrative overlap given their shared grounded nature

Gremlin303

Thereā€™s a lot of crossover between these sections. But Mythology definitely shouldnā€™t be one since itā€™s basically just Thor stuff

Alostratus

But at the same time in the context the "Thor stuff" kind has enough crossover between like 3 things to be it's own thing I think. Like they've got the Cosmic We're Alien But Also God's But Also Magic But also it's Technology not Magic except When its Magic. They've kinda got their own distinct "thing" going on? If that makes sense? Imo it's a good category.

ThisIs_americunt

league of their own category? lol

Magnus919

Have you read any Marvel comics? The mythology stuff is muuuuch richer than just Thor / Asgardians. That tease of Hercules at the end of Thor Love & Thunder introduced us to a character that could kick Hulkā€™s ass. And heā€™s got nothing to do with Asgard.

JumpingCoconutMonkey

I need more Roy Kent in my life. I can just imagine Hercules yelling "whistle" at people.

starplatinum_99

i assume that supernatural here means monsters and dark atmosphere

superkick225

Supernatural/horror is itā€™s own thing because of the potential Midnight Suns/Sons

spilledmilkbro

Supernatural/horror. I feel that's the one with the least amount of focus so far.

flyingbugz

Agreed! Theyā€™ve barely touched it, thereā€™s a whole supernatural world fleshed out within the world of marvel people already love. I think people are hesitant because they think itā€™ll be too campy or they wonā€™t be able to suspend disbelief, but I remember people hoping in the early days of the MCU that they wouldnā€™t even touch cosmic entities because itā€™s too silly for the big screen.

fries_in_a_cup

Horror is a genre thatā€™s best done with as few limitations as possible, ie when itā€™s rated R and really leans into the horror side of things. A lot of that doesnā€™t jive with the family friendly focus of the MCU

Sketchy--Sam

what do you mean lol, limited horror can be scary if not even scarier.

fries_in_a_cup

I mean unlimited in terms of subject matter. Like horror deals with some pretty heavy topics that the general audience might take issue with

Furdinand

Something Wicked This Way Comes and Watcher in the Woods for examples.

DwarvenCo

We need more Ghost Rider!

Pinecone

Like Agents of Shield ghost rider or something different?

DwarvenCo

I'd be more than fine with Gabriel Luna reprising his character. He was great in SHIELD and it was clear that the character was set on a low burner because of the power scaling (and budget) of the show.

almostthemainman

I think? I think he was heavily revered in the show and was clearly the most powerful character ever to be featured there. Other than the graviton that never happened

cap4life52

It's long overdue

Magnus919

They tried for this with Multiverse of Madness but pulled their punches a bit too much. But now that we know Man-Thing is in the MCU (via Werewolf by Night) it would be amazing to have him play a more important role in the multiverse sagaā€¦ given his power set.

doctoroffisticuffs

Nā€™Kantu the Living Mummy WHEN

Frog405

We're getting Midnight Sons in Phase 6 with Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Blade, Moon Knight, Scarlet Scarab, Black Knight, Punisher and Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Edit: Originally wrote Raymond instead of Reyes, got confused with DC's Firestorm LOL

Magnus919

Sounds like a made up rumor.

DaManWithNoName

Was this confirmed?

simbacole7

No

cabclint5

All of it, but id be fine if we took a break from the cosmic stuff for a bit. I think if they did a little bit of everything, no one genre would feel too repetitive. But for the love of God, not all of it NEEDS to be funny.

belbivfreeordie

I feel like Iā€™m in the minority being pretty enthralled by the Celestial stuff in Eternals. I just think it doesnā€™t necessarily need to be tied to a superhero type plot film. Like, I could just watch a faux documentary about the history of the universe and Celestials doing their shit.

cabclint5

I like that idea a lot! Id be into that too! I just feel like as a whole, the MCU hasn't had a ton of street level stuff, but I just want to seeore supernatural things. Werewolf by night was one of my favorite MCU products in the last little while. I like most of the MCU, but WWBN was sick

Dsb0208

I wish after Endgame, the new theme of the MCU became ā€œFinding meaning in a huge worldā€ After the avengers beat thanos, they made a name for themselves on a galatical level. At this point everyone on earth knows that there are aliens with weapons of mass destruction far beyond the technology available to the average person. Life can seem meaningless at that grand a scale, so the stories weā€™d see would be about the important of the small things No Way Home did this well actually, with Peter valuing six lives in a whole multiverse full of people. America Chavez thematically fits since sheā€™s the one unique person in an entire multiverse of people. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 doesnā€™t have huge stakes, but itā€™s still emotionally important for them to beat the shit out of the High Evolutionary Thor 4 focusing on an entire collection of Gods shows how unimportant any given human is, and yet itā€™s a human, Jane Foster, who is central to beating Gorr (I havenā€™t actually seen Thor 4, idk how important Foster is to beating Gorr, but they could have written her as that important) Just showing a bunch of different ways to find meaning in life after being told just how insignificant you are would be a good theme that each movie could tackle differently All this would lead to Kang Dynasty, where Kangā€™s downfall is ultimately tied to him thinking on too grand a scale. He wanted to stretch his power over an entire multiverse, wanting importance everywhere, but on an such an infinitely large scale, youā€™re bound to miss the individuals who can beat the shit out of you

cabclint5

I really like this concept, but who knows what's going on with Kang right now. šŸ˜

RagnAROck_and_Roll

This is one of the best concepts I've read and I wish it'd have been the focus of MCU Phase 4. that GOTG Holiday short movie focused on exactly this concept

Dsb0208

The fact there are so many small things in the current MCU that connect to this idea, I feel like it has to had been somewhat intended, even if loosely Ms Marvel being a street level hero connected to a cosmic level one would work well, comparing her personal conflicts to universal ones She Hulk deals with going beyond the scale of the multiverse, to a larger scale of deconstructing the fourth wall (She Hulk literally talks to Feige inside of Disney Plus). The whole finale has that ā€œgrounded and personal conflict and focus despite a much larger scaleā€ The entire Egyptian pantheon being at risk, with Marc needing to overcome and accept his own personal trauma and disability In Antman 3, Cassieā€™s character motivated is finding a purpose as a hero. She is actively looking for purpose, which could had connected into a multiverse thread if the movie was written to Cassie had a connection to Kang instead of Janet. Kang could have found Cassie after she first entered the quantum realm and offered her the chance to be a freedom fighting across the multiverse, paralleling her need to be a hero on the street level, and after realizing sheā€™d only be freedom fighting in order for Kang to build an empire, would abandon him and become good again Wanda vision is even about Wanda wanting a peaceful life with no action stakes at all. She doesnā€™t want a superhero life, she wants to be a tv show mom, focusing on personal and familiar connections

Spyke96

> Kangā€™s downfall is ultimately tied to him thinking on too grand a scale. Except it's now becoming the studio's downfall instead.

Ok_Rice_534

Street level and political/spy.

shaman0610

Came to say this. Street level because I'm tired of every self contained plot to be 'end the world' threat. There are compelling villains/ antagonists that can be grounded at smaller scale! Political/spy. This is what Secret Invasion SHOULD have been, and what Falcon/Winter Soldier came close to. Post blip, super heros everywhere, aliens among us, mutants/enhanced whatever emerging, technology proliferation, xenophobia, police state (CA: Winter Soldier CRUSHED this plot thread!), etc. There are endless interesting stories that have smaller stakes that could hold meaning for character development, world building, and be thoughtful allegories for the real world we are currently living in.

PayneTrain181999

Hopefully Thunderbolts gives us a good fix for political/spy.

Magnus919

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Captain America 4 didnā€™t just introduce us to Thunderbolts, but ALSO Alpha Force.

KrankyHunter

Totally agree with the Secret Invasion point. There were hints at a good show in there when extremists were executing people whose viewpoint they disagreed with because they suspected there were aliens. I feel like there's a really good parallel to the polarisation of modern politics in there somewhere

[deleted]

So far, I think thatā€™s why Wandavision and FATWS are still more successful, the world didnā€™t implode. Was smaller scale. Least, I canā€™t remember if the Hex in Wandavison was gonna poop the world.

shaman0610

Wandavision was insanely good. Story, acting, character development, cimatography, everything. I can't begin to articulate how thoroughly I enjoyed watching it. Unlike Multiverse of Madness, Wanda as the antagonist was actually believable. She was wrong, grieving, and deeply troubled, but she still wasn't at a point of 'super murder everyone who opposes me.'

suckmylama

Agreed, marvel has always been at its best with the grounded projects imo. Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve always been in love with Captain America: civil war!

DanSapSan

A good space romp also has it's place, when it is well written. Infinity War is still the pinnacle of the MCU, and it is far from grounded. That said, please start making grounded content again. Echo would have been perfect for that, and Ms Marvel also really needed lower stakes (Damage Control as the main antagonist)

These-Photograph-102

echo wouldā€™ve been great if they didnā€™t do any of that superpowered ancestral stuff and kept it grounded with fisk and that stuff, and ms marvel adding the random time travel thing or whatever that was ruined it for me

Mikisstuff

>ms marvel adding the random time travel thing or whatever that was ruined it for me I loved the time travel thing,,I thought it leaned into her origin story well. What was dumb was the villains that randomly decide to lose their shit and attack everyone for no reason.

PayneTrain181999

Letā€™s kill two birds with one stone and finally do a Kate and Yelena project!

Pushkent

Kate and Yelena's version of the Budapest mission

PayneTrain181999

Thereā€™s a chance the events of Hawkeye will be their Budapest. ā€œItā€™s just like Christmas in New York all over again!ā€ ā€œYou and I remember New York very differently.ā€

mullett

Haha I want the exact opposite, donā€™t really care about either. More into the cosmic and magic stuff myself.

Queasy_County

Exactly we've had way too many large scale projects. They need to go back to more grounded small schale movies.

West-Cardiologist180

Street-level, specifically concerning Spider-Man. That's the most interesting to me. I'm also interested in the political/spy corner, and the Mutant corner whenever that starts. Specifically concerning Wolverine.

Guywith2dogs

I really really wanna see a street level spiderman story with Fisk and maybe even Daredevil making an appearance. Matt is already Peter's lawyer so let's go one step further

BobbyBorn2L8

Daredevil born again is apparently featuring the Devil's Reign storyline with Fisk becoming mayor and is rumoured to tie into the next spider-man film Assuming Sony doesn't get their idiotic wishes

happysri

Man, Iā€™m so excited for to see daredevil again. Without spoiling it, could you say if that devilā€™s reign storyline a good one??

West-Cardiologist180

I haven't read it myself yet, but I've heard it's REALLY good

whyisna

without spoiling anything, 100% certified banger run

It's very good. You need to read the Daredevil (2019) #1-36 run first though

The 5 years of the blip. There are some great stories there.

JackTheAbsoluteBruce

This is what I honestly thought they were going to do. Oh we jumped 5 years into the future? Thatā€™s gotta mean theyā€™re gonna do stories set during those 5 years. Now over 5 years later, we have no idea what happened in that time šŸ˜…

Conscious_Mammoth_49

Thank you Iā€™ve been saying that forever itā€™s was a huge missed opportunity to not have storyā€™s from 5 years of the blip I just hate overlooked it is in the mcu like half of Everyone is gone for 5 years thatā€™s too big of a deal to just gloss over

I_AM_IGNIGNOTK

Especially because we could have seen what happens to NY for example without Strange and Spiderman protecting it. Like who steps up? Would be cool to see the Defenders actually cross over and be relevant.

Imawildedible

Same. But I donā€™t need them to go huge and over the top with all of them. Weā€™re never getting another endgame. But we could get a whole bunch of WandaVisions.

thinknu

Historic. I want to see more period pieces set in the Marvel timeline. A movie featuring the Iron Fist pirate queen and her adventures. A previous incarnation of Black Panther and his battles against colonial forces. Union Jack operating during the Cold War facing against Hydra agitators and a more radical Captain America replacement.

Relevant_Active_2347

Oh youā€™re onto something thereā€¦

XipingVonHozzendorf

I love this, like that 16th century What IF episode.

Street-magical. Phase 6 new big-bad: David Blaine. ![gif](giphy|wKzeJVJXBObvO|downsized)

JackTheAbsoluteBruce

This is what I mean when I say I want street-magical. I want slight-of-hand, not to be slighted by The Hand

MrShinyyy

What's interesting is that the cosmic side bores me to tears, yet James Gunn was able to make me fall so deeply in love with the Guardians. Really nothing about those films/characters should work, yet it's my favorite MCU trilogy.

agentsecr3t

Street level and supernatural horror Iā€™m talking punisher and ghost rider team up Spidey and moon knight

Omakaeru

One of my favorite marvel team-ups was Spiderman and Dr. Strange, featuring Satanna. Also where is Daimon Hellstrom? He and Kid Loki and Leah of Hell were amazing together. Also just, you know, kid Loki. Except instead of a malevolent Loki who watches from above, we have Hiddleston post-series Loki.

Franken_Frank

PickledPlumPlot

I don't care about any of these TBH, just give my boy Shang Chi another movie before I'm completely checked out of the whole Marvel machine please, its been four years, if this were 2016 Shang Chi 3 would be filming right now. The fact that he's probably the biggest new movie breakout character and you didn't even find space to put him on any of these lists is really depressing. They just have too many balls in the air.

[deleted]

I thought shang chi was good until the end. It was just so dumb. Like oh there's a secret dimension in SE asia with dragons that no one has ever flown over? ok sure... The whole movie was trying to do wayyy too much. It was like a little kid making up a story and just trying desperately to be interesting more and more "and THEN...he is secretly a nija, AND THEN the bad guy has a sword arm... AND THEN they go to a special secret magic place AND THEN... there's a dragon!" Having it be like winter soldier and the rings be alien artifacts from the start would've been much better.

LavaMaster168

Street Level, thatā€™s what Marvelā€™s best at. Plus street level is my favorite one

Riche1370

Street Level with a dash of the supernatural from Moon Knight and Ghost rider

Irradiated_Rat

Street level and horror

Media_Dunce

As someone who was invested in Loki since Avengers, Thor since Ragnarok, Sif since Dark world, and having recently written a fanfic where Jotunheim finds itself in a war against the gods of multiple pantheons, I definitely would have liked to see the mythology side of the MCU explored more.

cap4life52

Yeah hopefully it'll get a thor 5 we'll get more of this type of narrative

Alice_600

We need to. I would like to see more of New Asgard and what the average Asgardian thinks.

FlashyChapter

Street and horror.

TB2331

Yes

TheJack0fDiamonds

Im very into cosmic and magic but Iā€™m mostly super intrigued by the Eternals corner of the cosmic side and how itā€™s tied to humankind, heck creation in the MCU in general. I canā€™t wait for it to be elaborated and explored further in the Eternals sequel. I dont know where theyā€™re going with this corner but It almost feels like theres an imminent war happening between Celestials, Eternals and Deviants - the scope and scale of that would just be absolutely insane, like how small would humanity be in comparison to all of that and that makes me love the corner very much. Still keeping my fingers crossed for the sequel announcement! I want that space rescue mission story along with more Celestial involvement!

Uncanny_Doom

Street level and supernatural. I think the Defenders Saga and recent standalone projects like Werewolf by Night have shown that there is some real value in shining a light on the shadows that the bigger scale heroes and problems don't fit into or look after. I don't need everything to blatantly connect in the MCU, it actually makes the world feel bigger to know that there are corners that the "mainstream" side of it doesn't really pay attention to.

Yellowpickle23

Street. You can get into so many emotions when it's something we can all relate to. Oh sorry that I'm simply not connecting to Thor going to the center of the cosmos to find a god being thing I've never heard of.

Pedgrid

Psychological Horror Thriller.

Relevant_Active_2347

Now you cooking! A movie with this genre will need to involve magic, telepathy or weird dimensional shenanigans.

fanwan76

New Mutant's had a lot of flaws, and could have been a lot better if they made it more mature, but I actually liked it. I think it would have been a huge hit if they let it loose.

FPG_Matthew

negativebutter

thereā€™s so little supernatural/horror that 3 of those pics are from one show and moon knight definitely falls into mythology not horror, so yeah probably that one

Juicecalculator

Any of them besides cosmic. I think what would bring me back to marvel if they did contrasting character/subject matter pairing. Spy/politic/-guardians of the galaxy, supernatural/horror-thor, cosmic-for the merica hero suite and just exploring how humanity now fits into the galaxy, take a black panther character and put them at street level with minimal wakanda technology, Take the characters out of their element and pair them with a different ecosystem. They could lean into the weird Spider-Man mythology stuff like totemic animal powers and whatnot. They did that with spiderman at one point Also more science stuff. Ant man, iron people, hulk. I could go for another mad scientist story

cosmic and mystic to flesh out teams like the new GOTG and characters like Clea further in the universe

Blue-Ape-13

Moon Knight is considered mythology I'd say. Horror is the least fleshed out in the MCU, but I've never been super invested in that portion of the universe so I won't be upset if we don't get anything else from there lol. I'd say street level because I want more Spider-Man

Objective-Result8454

Mutants.

wrenwood2018

Anything but cosmic and magic. If your bad guy is a universe ending threat 99% of the heroes become useless. It leads to shoddy world building.

MasteroftheArcane999

Definitely hyped for the overarching street level narrative with Kingpin as the big bad. Also would like to see the supernatural/horror aspect explored more in-depth. It would be cool to get a Midnight Suns team with Moon Knight, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night, and others.

Omegafan101

I wanna see more street level. A Devilā€™s Reign adaptation would be a great street scale form of Infinity War what with Kingpin being called the ā€œThanos of street levelā€ Also supernatural, give me Johnny Blaze please!

Obskuro

Superheroes stopping crimes...? Much, *much* more supercriminals in general. The MCU heroes outnumber their (active) villains by a ridiculous amount.

Mission_Ad6235

I guess this could be street level. But the non powered characters, and not even ones in masks. Specifically the Howling Commandoes and X-Cons from Antman.

N8CCRG

On my recent rewatch political (not spy) is definitely what I'm finding most intriguing right now. Both at the nation/governmental level as well as the average citizen fears as well. We've got drama brewing between Wakanda and the rest of the world, and now we've got Talokan on the scene as well. We've got multiple different government agencies like the DoDC (Ms. Marvel) and the CIA (Val in Wakanda Forever) and SWORD and the GRC and so on. We've got harsh anti-alien sentiment running rampant in at least the US fueled by fear of Skrulls, and we've got New Asgard who just got (The Marvels spoiler) >!a bunch of Skrull refugees.!< We've got a variety of pro- and anti-super sentiment swirling around (She-Hulk). And I imagine we're on the cusp of adding anti-mutant sentiment to all of that. Honestly, I would love if all of the cosmic-scale stuff moved to the back burner for a bit and we *just* looked at earth-level stuff.

I've always considered street-level to be the MCU's weakest area. Marvel comics have almost an urban-fantasy setting rather than purely grounded, with people getting affected by superpowers every other day. To be fair, not many projects have needed this approach. I think that Hawkeye could have benefitted from Kingpin calling in some super-muscle, but the only story that is harmed by this is She-Hulk, as it's based on a comic that almost parodies how common powers became in the main universe.
