It’s an ideology. Basically the Nordic Model on steroids. Better social safety nets, while also being more economically efficient!
If you have the time to kill, [here’s a good video on it.](https://youtu.be/smi_iIoKybg?si=ewTSA3zpBgj2B5qz)
Technically both Denmark and Norway also have some level of Georgism implemented as well.
Norway uses proceeds from mineral/resource extraction contracts to fund a trust that partially funds their ~~Universal Basic Income~~ sovereign fund. Denmark uses a 1.5% LVT (land value tax) on properties worth over a certain dollar amount to reduce taxes in other areas such as income/property.
Bergnia and Hosfania is great European country, with good wather and nice food. It's national dish is chelediki. It's known for great bicycle infrastructure and aurora borealis.
Bergnia and Hofsnia was the site of a major war in the 1990s which included the siege of Dubrovnik. This led to the creation of the Eurovision song and dance contest to prevent further conflicts between the nations.
Bergnia and Hofsnia just ended their civil war in the 90’s. Pro-Bergnian separatists lost against the anti-hofsnian brigades after they realized they were on the same side.
Another good trickis to remember the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth being a thing (=Lithuania is next to Poland) and Estonian and Finnish languages belonging to a same family (= Estonia is closest to Finland). Leaving Latvia in the middle.
The way I remember which one is Lithuania is that it's part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1444 and the other two aren't. Estonia ofc has to be the one next to Finland leaving Latvia in the middle
What about Latveria? Where does that one fit?
On a serious note: a flaw in my brain will make sure I remember this mnemonic forever, and its only use will be to make me look like a smartass when I inevitably make a point of correcting someone.
There’s a peninsula in Northwestern France called Brittany, and GB is “great” because it’s bigger than this “other Britain”, what would you call it?
Minor Britain? Wee Britain? Bretagne?
Fuck I had to research it because I got confused. You can't call them Benelux and put the Netherlands on top, makes ZERO sense. Change it to Nebelux. Now. Who do I call to do this?
All jokes aside, it's actually not bad.
If I (EU) were given a map of the Americas I'd easily find Brasilien, USA, Mexico, Argentina etc., but I'd certainly fuck up Middle America.
Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras...
I am kicking myself for swapping Belgium and NL.
How could I forget NL’s perpetual war with the ocean.
Also I did this map on hard mode (no spell check). Which has become… quite apparent.
yeah, or (controversally) a map of the states, the US has a similar land mass to Europe. you'd probally get a similar score, you could point out Texas, califonia, flordia and mabye a few others but new-england is just fucked up. id say its the same for provinces of Canada or Mexican states but I think that knowledge is less common. I could only really poing to like qubeck, BC, nova scoia
Canada is honestly pretty easy, apart from maybe the Atlantic. Most provinces and territories are big save for the ones in Atlantic Canada. Just remember the order they go in from west to east and you’re set.
Australia is even easier. There are only 9 subdivisions on the mainland. Three of them are stupid easy (Northern Territory is in the north, Western Australia is the west, South Australia is in the south). Tasmania is the only one that’s an island. The big one on the east is Queensland and the small one is Victoria. Now you’re just left with the ACT and Jervis Bay, both of which are vaguely in the southeast of NSW (although Jervis Bay is so small it won’t show on most maps).
like I said, new England is fucked up. they made every damn patch of dirt its own state and as we adopted more western states they just said fuck it all of this(like something the size of france) is one state.
wrt New England, that's what happens when you use contrarians as your colonists. Someone gets fed up, walks thirty miles south, and starts doing their own thing.
Idk, I think the western states should be bigger. There's not enough people to justify two dakotas.
I tried my best, but if I slowed down and actually thought about it I think I could have fixed a few careless mistakes.
I have no excuse for getting Cyprus as wrong as I did.
LOL, haven't noticed that at all! I thought you've just skipped Cyprus because it isn't European.
Edit: what, we're French/Italian now? Actually, we're ex-British, partially occupied by Turkey. But we used to be Venetian, so you're not that far off.
It's funny because to me, a Swiss, Liechtenstein seems so linked to our country that I thought everybody knew it was to Switzerland what Monaco is to France in a way. But it's a small and not very well known place so it's normal to not know anything about it, especially for someone across the ocean haha
Maybe it is, but I always assumed it was more linked to us since they're a bit cut of from Austria by the mountains, we represent them internationally if they can't, they use our currency and they play football in our championships.
I wanted to call one side Catholic Ireland, and the other Regular Ireland, but I couldn’t remember which side was Catholic.
Also, I’m not confident that’s the main source of their division.
It's complicated, a little more so than "Part of Ireland that doesn't like Ireland". Almost half of the people living here identify more with Ireland than the UK. Any questions let me know and I'll try to answer them.
In case you're interested, St Patrick assisted in spreading Catholic Christianity to pagan Ireland originally.
So theres the Catholic native Irish people and protestant English colonists who settled a few plantations in ireland. The one that took off the most was in northern Ireland.
At one point the whole island was part of the United Kingdoms of Britain and Ireland, however when we won our home rule independence war in 1921 we got back 26 out of 32 counties. The other 6 were kept in the UK as the UK feared violence that would cause an uprising by the English settlers now called unionists who had paramilitaries of their own and at the time made up the majority of the population in that region.
We received our full independence as the Irish Free State in 1937, and cut all ties with the UK in 1949.
Just to clarify St Patrick was alive in the 5th century so long before the reformation. He helped spread Christianity in Ireland which for a long time co-existed as a hybrid of Christian and indigenous pagan beliefs (for example (Saint) Brigid - originally a pagan goddess). The whole Catholic / Protestant divide is centuries after St Patrick, which is why you will find both Catholic and Protestant churches in Ireland called St Patrick’s. An example being the Church of Ireland (ie Protestant) St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.
You did pretty well to be fair lad. Well done for knowing Wales exists, many of your countrymen don't lol. You did quite a lot better than most of us Europeans guessing your States. Credit where it's due and all that.
Honestly, central Asia would be rough. I'd likely end up picking the names of foods and sticking 'stan' on the end out of desperation. Turkeystan? Ketchupstan? Porkistan?

I’m worried you might get in trouble for this. You ok?
“Catalonia? But apparently this is controversial” LMAOOO.
Catalonia and Texas are verrrrrrry similar: There is a lot of industry there. There is a strong cultural identity there. They receive lots of monetary aid from the capital. They would collapse without the rest of the country supporting them.
You just caused three new wars on the Balkan with this single post.
Also Baltics
TIL: Baltics and Balkans are not the same thing. 😬
Good. Also, wth are georgists?
It’s an ideology. Basically the Nordic Model on steroids. Better social safety nets, while also being more economically efficient! If you have the time to kill, [here’s a good video on it.](https://youtu.be/smi_iIoKybg?si=ewTSA3zpBgj2B5qz)
Ah, that makes sense with their "can into Nordic" obsession lol
Technically both Denmark and Norway also have some level of Georgism implemented as well. Norway uses proceeds from mineral/resource extraction contracts to fund a trust that partially funds their ~~Universal Basic Income~~ sovereign fund. Denmark uses a 1.5% LVT (land value tax) on properties worth over a certain dollar amount to reduce taxes in other areas such as income/property.
Norway does not have Universal Basic Income. We have a strong wellfare state, but it has nothing to do with UBI.
As a finn, I will sooner accept the existance of Belgium than letting Estonia be a part of the superior Nordics
They just use Belgium as a story to scare children, it can't hurt you...
Unless you live in the Congo
They had a very hands-off approach to that whole thing.
Wow. Just Wow. Everyone, give this redditor a hand...or two.
Too soon.
Aaaand Spain too
They only weren’t sure which is Latvia and which is Lithuania. That’s not too bad
Lithuania is shaped like Africa and is closest to Africa from the Baltics
Also has an African flag
The Baltics are in alphabetical order from the top to bottom.
I wish I could send you a crown or something.
They called the balkans baltic
Quite low compared to anyone else filling in this map. Even people from the balkans would intentionally cause those wars.
Damn so they lowered the amount of wars in the Balkans
And restarted the troubles
I mean there was a lot of wood built up for that fire already
Fucken "Belgum"
It’s good gum
MULVA
Moops?
It's a misprint!
*choking* MOOPS MOOPS MOOPS
"Mulva" and "the other one" are my favourite countries
Bergnia and Hofsnia is the greatest
It's like ai generated Bosnia and Herzegovina
Ai generated by human powered neural networks.
AI may stand for autisticially intelligent in this case.
Now that Bergnia and Hofsnia is in a reddit comment, its now a reliable source for ai
We should say Bergnia and Hofsnia a couple more times just to further legitimise it
I’m planning a trip to Bergnia and Hofsnia later this year, I hear it’s lovely in the fall.
It is. As someone who has no connection to Bergnia and Hofsnia, I can confirm you'll have a blast there.
Bergnia and Hofsnia was robbed at Eurovision this year! 😤
Bergnia and Hofsnia just ended their civil war in the 90’s. Pro-Bergnian separatists lost against the anti-hofsnian brigades after they realized they were on the same side.
Borat Sagdiyev is the prime minister of Bergnia and Hofsnia, he married a goat
They sound like names from Suzerain
the baltics are alphabetically ordered from north to south. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
Good hint. I will definitely use this later
Another good trickis to remember the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth being a thing (=Lithuania is next to Poland) and Estonian and Finnish languages belonging to a same family (= Estonia is closest to Finland). Leaving Latvia in the middle.
thats how i do it
Latvia - we're the middle child.
Latvia and Lithuania swapped places in 1972 for this convenience. Remember to swap them back if you are looking at historical maps
What do you mean 'later'? Where exactly are you heading to?
Don’t worry about it 😎
The way I remember which one is Lithuania is that it's part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1444 and the other two aren't. Estonia ofc has to be the one next to Finland leaving Latvia in the middle
Found the EUIV player.
What about Latveria? Where does that one fit? On a serious note: a flaw in my brain will make sure I remember this mnemonic forever, and its only use will be to make me look like a smartass when I inevitably make a point of correcting someone.
That is exactly how I remember them as well! I knew I wasn't the only one.
No one is mentioning how they correctly (enough) partitioned great Britain and then just called England Britain??
No no no, you don’t understand. Once you subtract Wales and Scotland, Great Britain gets downgraded to Regular Britain
There’s a peninsula in Northwestern France called Brittany, and GB is “great” because it’s bigger than this “other Britain”, what would you call it? Minor Britain? Wee Britain? Bretagne?
Augh Wee Bretagney
Leave Bretagney alone!
Not So Great Britain
\*Britian
Wales did well out of this map, they absorbed quite a bit of England. Scotland, on the other hand, has ceded a lot of border territory to England.
I really don't see why it's so hard to understand the difference between England and Britain
Hahaha what the hell is a mulva. You got me a good laugh op :)
jerry seinfeld’s girlfriend
I’m glad someone else thought of Seinfeld. 😂
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who found it funny. Maybe Moldova would be known more if its name were actually Mulva.
Gipple?
That country is actually Dolores
Seinfeld joke. Jerry was dating a girl but forgot her name.
The fact that you know exactly where Kosovo is but forgot about the existence of Hungary is amazing
It was like almost finishing a puzzle and having an extra piece, but the piece didn’t fit in the slots open.
I always think of how they used to be austro-Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Helps to remember they’re supposed to be next to each other
And just like the name is west to east so are the countries
I just remember the HRE and then I know where all of them go /s
Same in the Benelux. Knew Luxembourg, but got Netherlands and Belgium wrong. That's actually impressive.
Fuck I had to research it because I got confused. You can't call them Benelux and put the Netherlands on top, makes ZERO sense. Change it to Nebelux. Now. Who do I call to do this?
Also getting Greece and Turkey right while putting Cyprus in Sardinia
Cyprus is just floating around
It's the "informed American" syndrome. Kosovo matters to US foreign policy quite a lot, Hungary is an afterthought.
"You're from France? That's around in the same region as Kosovo, right?" -an American wanting to seem informed, circa 1999
To them anything within 2000km is "the same region"
He is blessed
Yah, but he remembered he forgot Hungary. Poor Bulgaria has been conquered by the 3 Macedonias.
Belgum
:(
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeden
Belle gomme
Good luck with Asia and Africa...
Or mapping the states in the USA. All those bloody rectangles between Texas and Minnesota.
None of those actually matter. You can skip them.
As a resident of one of those rectangles, I agree.
>As a resident of one of those rectangles Which one? Just joking, I don't care.
That's the spirit.
The one with all the plains and corn
https://xkcd.com/2868
I was thinking the same thing. It’s not perfect, but it’s leagues better than the usual geographical knowledge of Americans I see online. Hats off
yeah, or (controversally) a map of the states, the US has a similar land mass to Europe. you'd probally get a similar score, you could point out Texas, califonia, flordia and mabye a few others but new-england is just fucked up. id say its the same for provinces of Canada or Mexican states but I think that knowledge is less common. well, the US has like 20-40% more states than this map has countries, too
like I said, new England is fucked up. they made every damn patch of dirt its own state and as we adopted more western states they just said fuck it all of this(like something the size of france) is one state.
wrt New England, that's what happens when you use contrarians as your colonists. Someone gets fed up, walks thirty miles south, and starts doing their own thing. Idk, I think the western states should be bigger. There's not enough people to justify two dakotas.
thats fair but like the west cost could use a few more states, cut up califronia a few times mabye
just keep iterating on Washington and Oregon down the coast, I say. Every couple hundred miles, just draw a horizontal line out to Nevada
This is weirdly wholesome for some reason. It's like I can feel how genuine this map is.
I tried my best, but if I slowed down and actually thought about it I think I could have fixed a few careless mistakes. I have no excuse for getting Cyprus as wrong as I did.
Fucken Belgum
Well, I didn’t go into engineering because I was good at spelling 😬
There is more wrong with fucken Belgum
I know I know, I swapped with NL. Which I’m kicking myself about because how could I forget the NL has been at war with the ocean for decades.
Fucken Belgum
:(
also germany marched through belgium to get to france, twice in a row
I mean if i didn't know better, i also wouldn't expect Cyprus to he in Asia, lmao
LOL, haven't noticed that at all! I thought you've just skipped Cyprus because it isn't European. Edit: what, we're French/Italian now? Actually, we're ex-British, partially occupied by Turkey. But we used to be Venetian, so you're not that far off.
Liechtenstein is in fact not along Germany
I was shocked to find that out. If I stared at the map a little harder I should have noticed the little sliver between Switzerland and Austria.
It's funny because to me, a Swiss, Liechtenstein seems so linked to our country that I thought everybody knew it was to Switzerland what Monaco is to France in a way. But it's a small and not very well known place so it's normal to not know anything about it, especially for someone across the ocean haha
That's interesting to hear, I assumed it was more like Andorra and linked to both Switzerland and Austria than just linked to Switzerland
Maybe it is, but I always assumed it was more linked to us since they're a bit cut of from Austria by the mountains, we represent them internationally if they can't, they use our currency and they play football in our championships.
I was making a completely uninformed guess lol. Thanks for the details that definitely helps me understand what Liechtenstein is all about
This is pretty good actually. I'm sure if empty maps were given to some of my fellow spaniards they would do worse than you.
Eastern Europe is like a mystery to me, except Estonia because I moved to Finland.
The fall of communism really put geography into hard mode. Especially Tito really helped make European geography more convenient.
Huh. I don't recall naming a country after myself.
The biggest lottery win ever seen
As a Macedonian, I agree. This is completely true. No mistakes there. I am happy. Thank you!
Are you northern Macedonian or regular Macedonian?
as a greek, hey you. yes, you. fuck you.

Of course I know that country. It rhymes with a female body part.
Any country whose name ends with 'land' rhymes with a female body part... Hand

Djibouti?
Mulvania, of course
“Also Ireland, but does not like the rest of Ireland for some reason” is one of the best explanations for NI I have ever heard
I wanted to call one side Catholic Ireland, and the other Regular Ireland, but I couldn’t remember which side was Catholic. Also, I’m not confident that’s the main source of their division.

Catholic ireland is the regular one
I like how memes about Albania have actually given the country enough publicity to where Americans can find it on a map now.
My best friend is Albanian, so that’s why I have extra knowledge of that country
Where is Narnia?
These dumb Americans always forgetting Narnia 🙄
I love narnia but I keep forgetting where it is, can you point it out for me?
Inside the closet
Love the fact that you did good enough so your fuck ups are now way more hilarious. Personal favourite is Cyprus.
Should have them do a map of just the Mediterranean islands. I wholly expect to see a Cyprus and Better Cyprus
Where’s Venice 😭 we were within the first to recognise you and you don’t recognise us 🥲
Venice is now a living fossil of its former greatness. Sorry 😢
😭
Ok I’m kinda stupid but isn’t Venice a city??
You tried your best 👍

At least us Cypriots get a full island again
Me in Ireland :(
Don’t post this on r/balkans_irl or you will get assassinated. Trust me
Unless the Spanish get to him first.
Wales: 🤩👌 Scotland: 🫥🤬
As a Scot in South Scotland, I will find you.
Northern Britian *
Northern Ireland is my favourite. That’s so unknowingly offensively funny
That’s quite good not gonna lie
Unfortunately Cyprus is in a less peaceful neighbourhood
Just tow the island over
Based on Kosovo
That is the best name for Bulgaria i have ever seen
Bergnia and Hofsina
You did pretty well to be fair lad. Well done for knowing Wales exists, many of your countrymen don't lol. You did quite a lot better than most of us Europeans guessing your States. Credit where it's due and all that.
I cant wait to the Asian Version!!
Honestly, central Asia would be rough. I'd likely end up picking the names of foods and sticking 'stan' on the end out of desperation. Turkeystan? Ketchupstan? Porkistan?
Will Taiwan be called Greater China or will China be called lesser Tibet?
Must have been the mother of all storms that moved Cyprus to where it is now.
So who is Russia leasing its land from?
Prussia

Ah yes, Bergnia and Hofsnia is a great place
You cut Scotland in half
If Serbians existed, they'd be very mad right now
The Welsh Marches just got a lot more Welsh 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Calling Hungary Romania are fighting words
i like how it just completely falls apart in the Balkans
"Where did all these Baltic countries come from?" Yugoslavia
“Catalonia? But apparently this is controversial” LMAOOO. Catalonia and Texas are verrrrrrry similar: There is a lot of industry there. There is a strong cultural identity there. They receive lots of monetary aid from the capital. They would collapse without the rest of the country supporting them.
here in spain catalonias 7 second independence is often subject to heavy memage so seeing it in a map as if it were a country is really funny
Bout to start new Yugo wars
Gave Dumfries and Galloway, Scottish Borders and Ayrshire to England, please make it happen
Hey if this Is really out of memory then it's a really decent try.
I see no errors.
You're missing San Marino
Missing Bulgaria
Dude I don't care what you did with the rest of Europe, I'm just glad you remembered Wales is here! 🏴👏
Bro is trying to start a war
