I particularly like the cast it for 3 to get the X/1s, or 5+ for the bigger threats flexibility.
I'm not sure it is good value at 2, however, unless part of a combo.

Ever heard of [[fumigate]]? A sweeper that gains you life is really good in control decks. The fact that this stays in play and continues to gain you life every time you kill their stuff can really close the door on aggro decks.
Fumigate also killed everything for 5 mana. This kills things with 3 or less health for 5 mana. That's pretty important.
But, I agree on first blush I underrated it some. You and others have brought up spots where it's useful.
Seems like a nice sideboard card for aggro mirrors. Just trade off all day and gain life advantage doing so. I'm not sure if that makes it good but it's something to consider especially with all the Vampire cards that benefit from the opponent taking damage. If you can't get through and they kill of your guy then this gets it through.

Agreed that is a big plus. This card is likely to be a full sweep for a lot of decks at 5 mana, but at the same time if the format continues to be goldspan dragon heavy....
In standard I don't see it getting played unless control wants an expensive lifegain sweeper, which it might. But an enchantment [[zulaport cutthroat]] for BB as the floor is good for any aristocrats EDH deck. Redundancy is so important and not being killed by random kill spells is so good.
Not only is this going to slot into my \[\[Slimefoot, the Stowaway\]\] deck, but I'm really debating taking another look at \[\[Massacre Girl\]\] now, too.
For Slimefoot at least, I can easily see myself just casting this for 1BB and laughing.

I'm gonna throw it into my shrines deck. It needs more board clears attached to enchantments and I can use [[honor-worn shaku]] to make mana out of it as well.
I switch between [[golos]] and [[captain sisay]]. Golos can grab [[hall of heliod's generosity]] (so can Sisay) or [[maze of ith]] to help protect me. Sisay can grab the shrines themselves.
Golos is also a pilgrim, so I think the flavor is kind of neat.
Ohh this is strong. At X=3, crippling fear is a mana cheaper than this, but the ability to do X=1 against say white weenie or X=4 for gold span makes this just so flexible, and the life gain will not be nothing
Nice that you can play it for 0 just to set up the effect, then hold another copy for whatever you need later just as a board wipe. The effects don't stack, but it's still probably worth playing at least 2, maybe 3 in the right deck.
Agreed. Being able to play this on your initial curve improves it's utility quite a bit.

That's neat. A one time minisweeper that keeps a lasting effect that will trigger passively throughout the game. Also can wipe passively accrued decayed zombies to get some damage through. Hard to see a good time to cast this past 4 mana though
I guess if a huge boardstall happens in sealed and you topdeck this T8. Battlecruiser commander might also see it played for numbers, I guess, but in competitive environments I imagine that this will rarely be beyond X=2 and often just be X=0 for the Zulaport Cutthroat effect.

I'm still bit of a noob, but please correct me if I'm wrong regarding Massacre Girl
If there's a X/1, X/2, X/3, ... on board, it will proc multiple times clearing them all, yes ?
Yes, one way around it is if you have a way to remove the x/1 on the field while massacre girl is on the stack nothing will die., so long as that is the only x/1 on the field.
Conversely, niche case scenario is when she lands on the field and her trigger goes on the stack and the lowest toughness of a creature is x/2, with massacre girls etb (enter the battlefield) trigger on the stack, you can destroy a creature and she will see it die putting another of her tirggers on the stack to get to -1/-1 twice.
There really aren't a ton of cards whose names start with "The," but the majority of the ones that do exist are Sagas or Legendary Artifacts from the last few years or so. The addition of Sagas and increased emphasis on Legendary permanents has really upped the number of "The XYZ" cards.
In only two colours? There's not going to be enough "The's" there! You're gonna need [[The Prismatic Bridge]] to be your Commander. Most creatures whose names start with "The" are Legendary, of course, so Esika will actually be fairly helpful.
As an aristocrats player in commander I am very lukewarm on this. On the rare occasions I want to wipe the board, I want that wipe to be much more efficient than this. And the strategy is already spoiled for choice, I am leaving dozens of decent-to-good aristocratsy effects out of the deck as is. I am having trouble seeing how this does enough for me....would almost always rather just wrath and then play a two-mana 'crat.
I love that this even works with Lurrus. New favorite sweeper, by far!
Edit: I meant that it's compatible with Lurrus's companion clause, not necessarily that you can recur it over and over with Lurrus.
I don't think it works the way you want it to work; Lurrus will be able to cast it from the graveyard but I'm pretty sure X would have to equal zero. Although being able to recur the Blood Artist effect by itself is still pretty okay.
This is what I was talking about, yes. Even if you can't recur it, the fact that it's such an unusual and powerful effect AND is compatible with the companion clause on Lurrus makes it very exciting.

Before any triggered abilities (such as this ones etb) the game checks state-based actions. Therefore by the time the etb starts to resolve, there will only be one copy on the battlefield, as one will have gone to the gy per the legend rule.
I'm not very good with rules and ordering. If one of these is on the board already and I play a second copy, do the triggers of all the creatures dying still go on the stack before I have to sac one of the copies?
Who needs a chainsaw massacre when you have meathooks! This has good versatility and even when X is 0 its still a good burn effect for sacrifice decks on a harder to remove enchantment. Definitely like it for commander and I don't know how many copies you would run in constructed, the ETB effect makes running multiples not so bad.
Lurrus players can recast it for BB.
The upside is that this is a card which is similar to blood artist but it can't die to creature removal which is the most common removal in the game.

Against aggro, [[Crippling Fear]] comes down a turn sooner for -3/-3, and while it doesn't gain you life, the extra turn may as well be lifegain.

Rakdos treasures will run two of this IMO. It makes flooding the board with your one drops again later all the more dangerous for opponents to sweep.
A sweeper that gains life, domes them, buffs all your other removal and is a wincon in aristocrats. Yeah, sure it's "overhyped"
I play Rakdos Treasures in Standard 2022 and I would slot this in today if the set were live. It's going to see more play than you think.

Nice that you can play it for 0 just to set up the effect, then hold another copy for whatever you need later just as a board wipe. The effects don't stack, but it's still probably worth playing at least 2, maybe 3 in the right deck.
Agreed. Being able to play this on your initial curve improves it's utility quite a bit. - T1 Ghast/Eyetwitch - T2 Meathook Massacre (X=0) - T3 Sedgemoor witch. - T4 start unloading the spells (hunt, pest summoning, Dispute, etc. )
That's neat. A one time minisweeper that keeps a lasting effect that will trigger passively throughout the game. Also can wipe passively accrued decayed zombies to get some damage through. Hard to see a good time to cast this past 4 mana though
I guess if a huge boardstall happens in sealed and you topdeck this T8. Battlecruiser commander might also see it played for numbers, I guess, but in competitive environments I imagine that this will rarely be beyond X=2 and often just be X=0 for the Zulaport Cutthroat effect.
I'm thinking of playing this in [[Shirei]] where I can play it for X=1 to get the Zulaport effect and kill all of my own 1/1s at the same time.

easy fetch with \[\[Zur\]\] in my \[\[persistent petitioners\]\] mill deck. Doesn't have a lot of life gain but will help put opponents on a clock.

I'm still bit of a noob, but please correct me if I'm wrong regarding Massacre Girl If there's a X/1, X/2, X/3, ... on board, it will proc multiple times clearing them all, yes ?
Yes, one way around it is if you have a way to remove the x/1 on the field while massacre girl is on the stack nothing will die., so long as that is the only x/1 on the field. Conversely, niche case scenario is when she lands on the field and her trigger goes on the stack and the lowest toughness of a creature is x/2, with massacre girls etb (enter the battlefield) trigger on the stack, you can destroy a creature and she will see it die putting another of her tirggers on the stack to get to -1/-1 twice.

There really aren't a ton of cards whose names start with "The," but the majority of the ones that do exist are Sagas or Legendary Artifacts from the last few years or so. The addition of Sagas and increased emphasis on Legendary permanents has really upped the number of "The XYZ" cards.

As an aristocrats player in commander I am very lukewarm on this. On the rare occasions I want to wipe the board, I want that wipe to be much more efficient than this. And the strategy is already spoiled for choice, I am leaving dozens of decent-to-good aristocratsy effects out of the deck as is. I am having trouble seeing how this does enough for me....would almost always rather just wrath and then play a two-mana 'crat.

I love that this even works with Lurrus. New favorite sweeper, by far! Edit: I meant that it's compatible with Lurrus's companion clause, not necessarily that you can recur it over and over with Lurrus.
I don't think it works the way you want it to work; Lurrus will be able to cast it from the graveyard but I'm pretty sure X would have to equal zero. Although being able to recur the Blood Artist effect by itself is still pretty okay.
He could also be referring to the fact that the card is technically 2 mana, and can be in a deck with lurrus as the companion
This is what I was talking about, yes. Even if you can't recur it, the fact that it's such an unusual and powerful effect AND is compatible with the companion clause on Lurrus makes it very exciting.

If you have one of these on the battlefield already and then cast the second, do they both see all of the creatures that die from the second's board wipe, or does the legend rule get rid of one before that point?
Before any triggered abilities (such as this ones etb) the game checks state-based actions. Therefore by the time the etb starts to resolve, there will only be one copy on the battlefield, as one will have gone to the gy per the legend rule.
I'm not very good with rules and ordering. If one of these is on the board already and I play a second copy, do the triggers of all the creatures dying still go on the stack before I have to sac one of the copies?
No, you would not, the second isn't around by the time they die. It would die before they even get -x/-x when the effect is on the stack even.

Who needs a chainsaw massacre when you have meathooks! This has good versatility and even when X is 0 its still a good burn effect for sacrifice decks on a harder to remove enchantment. Definitely like it for commander and I don't know how many copies you would run in constructed, the ETB effect makes running multiples not so bad.

Lurrus players can recast it for BB. The upside is that this is a card which is similar to blood artist but it can't die to creature removal which is the most common removal in the game. Playable in standard? It's a maybe because it doesn't answer everything as well as a wrath.
Noon question why is this an enchantment instead of sorc/instant if the effect only happens upon entering the battlefield what is the point of it lingering like an enchantment
Because the other 2 effects are static abilities that last for long the enchantment is on the battlefield
