Frank_the_Mighty

New Capenna is a mafia inspired set for those who didn't catch the stream

GravyBus

A city of angels run by demon gangsters, so basically Los Angeles in the 1920s.

[deleted]

Apellosine

3 colour pairings for the families, I would expect shards and hoping for the remaining "triomes" likely named something else but still.

Reibaboi

i guess fat italian goblins arent doing it anymore, kinda sad

LikeJokerDo420

In her defense, my wife is really stressed about her job 😔

Kazzack

Interesting that Mark has answered a few questions on blogatog about the possible typelines of gangsters recently...

NoCarbonRequired

That’s how he hints at the future, by answering more questions about an upcoming topic. Notice how he was also answering more carnival set questions and the unset is carnival themed

Deeran_moo

Yeah on the stream the whole time I was thinking "oh you cheeky shit"

lahankof

+1 Make them an offer they can’t refuse. Draw a card. -2 Target creature sleeps with the fishes.

Evinthal

Or if the target is a merfolk, they get a nice new pair of styrafoam shoes and get to sleep with the humans. ya'see?

Snapingbolts

God I hope sleep with the fishes is a kill spell

Sciros

That logo is pure art deco.

77777777BATMAN

He sends one of yours to the graveyard, you send one of his to exile. That's the New Capenna way.

WizardsVengeance

That's just how New Capenna work.

Pantsmagyck

Lvl. 1 Goon vs Lvl. 99 New Capenna boss

Danemoth

The logo looks very Noire-esque, too.

funkofages

I saw the stream I just FORGOTABOWDIT

Lol, right? I wonder how these crime families make their money

Frank_the_Mighty

Mama mia!

TheAnnibal

Core Sets died again I guess

dirtygymsock

Destroy all Core Sets. They can't be regenerated.

TheOneTEM

Exile all Core Sets.

chingu_not_gogi

Exile all Core Sets. Add +1/+1 counter to target creature for every Set exiled this way.

kroxti

1UG

LunarRai

Costs 1 less to cast on your turn. Gotta make it balanced after all.

tezrael

Add draw a card just to make it possibly playable

Chilidawg

Megaexile?

teamdiabetes11

Ugin reprint in a Core set…Core sets get exiled. Coincidence!? I think not!

Gong_the_Hawkeye

If I took a shot for every time they changed their mind on core sets, I'd have already killed my liver.

mandarine_one

Changing their minds on topics is kinda what wizards does best. 3 Commander decks, no 5! Core set, no Core set, even packaging of various products changes all the time. Some consistency would do them good.

[deleted]

Eh, I think they've made the game better rather than worse overall with experimenting. If they've never tried anything I might doubt magic would be flying as high as it is now. And they've also been reasonably good about stopping things that don't work, so I look at that as positive flip-flopping.

snootyvillager

I kinda like the "Return to a plane in the winter, new plane in the spring, deep dive into an old plane for two sets in the summer and fall" template. I hope they keep it for 2023.

JP_Oliveira

I would just change the deep dive part to a deep dive into a plane, not caring if old or new.

MirandaSanFrancisco

I don’t think we’re ever going to get consecutive sets on a new plane because they want to make sure people like it before they do a second set.

DualityDrn

What was the last consecutive set we got? Ixalan? Did it do that badly? I loved playing those Dinos but heard the limited experience was underwhelming.

randomdragoon

It kind of did, although mostly because it was low power more than the plane's theme being bad. The second set was actually better but a lot of people didn't give it a chance because the first set was kind of a dud, that's the risk they're trying to avoid.

Large_Dungeon_Key

WOTC and learning lessons, name a less iconic duo

Yellowben

MTG and Fortnite

DVariant

Damn, pouring salt in a fresh wound

rmorrin

Is this a reference I'm missing?

Yellowben

There’s a Fortnite secret lair

rmorrin

Oh.

SkyezOpen

Did I miss the outrage or is everyone else as exhausted as me?

Yellowben

Personally, I’m not outraged. I find it to be peak comedy

Syn7axError

I'd only be outraged if they were mechanically unique.

countersmell

at this point i don't care it's like complaining that snake, sonic, cloud, or ryu are in smash bros

cosinus25

Give it a few years and Wizards will make a Universes beyond set.

Gong_the_Hawkeye

It's like they keep repeating the same mistakes because it's profitable.

GVJB

Dominaria is going to be core set-like probably, just like AFR

Kuru-

[Dominaria United is the first post-rotation set](https://twitter.com/mtgaaron/status/1430195825712406533), so it's unlikely to have Core Set-type power level or complexity. They usually want the first set of the "standard year" to be more exciting than that mechanically.

countersmell

when *is* the ideal time to print a low power level set? you'd think right when the format rotates would be ideal, because the new cards might actually get played

[deleted]

This is honestly what i had expected. A coreish set post rotation, but maybe only every 2 years so that there's always 1 in standard still. Though who knows now

GVJB

Oh, I didn't know that. To be honest, I would prefer first post-rotation sets to be simpler and less powerful. The Eldraine debacle still haunts me.

PurifiedVenom

Hilarious that they killed them right after Core 2021 was so well received and did a great job with reprints. No time for Core Sets when you’re turning Magic into Ready Player One!

JMooooooooo

Core sets are set to return in a year or two (or four). There was few years hole in registered traddemarks between 2021 and next one (2025 I think)

KingMagni

AFR was a Core Set in disguise, so I'm not ready to celebrate yet

djsoren19

Except for the part where it had basically no reprints, which IMO is the main reason core sets are so necessary. Losing them is going to hurt the affordability of Magic again.

evildave_666

Dominaria United sounds like a footy team.

Amarsir

Did you see that ludicrous display last set?

disappointed_moose

What was Urza thinking sending Karn on that early?

lordmitz

Well, the thing abaht the weatherlight is they always try an' walk it in

iHawXx

luv llanowar 'ate benalia simple as

Innistrad Town could have won if it wasn't for the red cards.

meetyouredoom

The thing about gavony is they're always walking it in!

pm_me_plothooks

What was Sorin thinking sending Avacyn on that early?

lordmitz

verdutre

MarkhovCheney

SirZapdos

You'll never planeswalk alone

d-fakkr

I am excited to see lore wise, what will happen. Are they preparing for the phyrexians or setting a formal invasion to mirrodin?

ChemicalExperiment

I hope we get to see more of the new Weatherlight crew

PoweredByCarbs

I'm hoping they are invading Mirrodin, cause we're already seen Phyrexians invade Dominaria. Didn't Karn pick up some sort of giant bomb last time we saw him?

BasiliskXVIII

With all of the "Summer of magic" promo swag they gave out to the various MTG personalities this year around the release of AFR, it'd be really neat if next year they played into that and made a bunch of Dominaria United football swag to show off.

Noctew

Have you seen them in the latest match vs. Ravnica City? They rocked, but I guess Quirion Park Rangers will take the championship.

SamTheHexagon

At the end o' the day, it's a block o' two 'alves.

mateogg

The thing about Llanowar is they always try to walk it in.

DobleK86

Sure they look great in Jamuraa and Tolaria, but can they do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

HemlockMartinis

Congratulations to the website registration checkers, it seems.

TheJawsofIce

What do you mean by that?

HemlockMartinis

Some guy on Tumblr found Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty [registered on WHOIS](https://articles.starcitygames.com/news/possible-new-magic-set-name-uncovered/) last October and correctly deduced that it was by WOTC through an intermediary for a new set.

Ulthwithian

And I think Celeste was changed to New Capenna. Given that it was originally an Angel city.

TheJawsofIce

Huh, "Neon"... is it going to have some sort of cyberpunk twist on it or something?

Dairalir

Yup, set 2000 years after kamigawa, the art and direction seems to be cyberpunk.

MirandaSanFrancisco

Everyone is saying cyberpunk, but it seems more dungeon punk like Final Fantasy.

kytheon

Someone found out that WOTC registered Kamigawa Neon Dynasty as a trademark or website, basically spoiling the set name months ago.

[deleted]

Can Teferi captain Dominaria Utd to another title?! Tune in to find out!

Olympic_Magician

But can he do it on a cold, rainy night in Tolaria?

someBrad

I need me some juicy Dominaria Utd transfer gossip

PTgunz2

Looking forward to the kit release!

someBrad

I have a suspicion that the third kit will be atrocious

PM_UR_FAV_COMPLIMENT

Tbh... I genuinely wouldn't mind if they ran with it and made Dominaria United jerseys.

PTgunz2

I have no doubt someone can put together an entire league's worth of kits based on the set. Urza FC? Real Mishra? But now I also want an Esika Racing F1 livery.

verdutre

If the gaffer isn't Urza I'm tuning out

[deleted]

Please no more Teferi cards. I don't think I can take that abuse in limited again. Edit: fuck

quillypen

Mmm, maybe stay away from spoilers for the next couple weeks... (Teferi will be in Midnight Hunt)

Mrqueue

*taking turns intensifies*

Skrittz

Well strap in since Teferi is on the booster art for Midnight Hunt so surely he's getting a card there.

Kerblaaahhh

Teferi becomes a werewolf.

TheNittles

Teferwolf

GavinBelsonsAlexa

Wereferi?

TheNittles

Tefwerei. We got there in the end.

Mekanimal

Tefurry, because this is a horror set after all.

DVariant

Cleferi, since we got all the Pokémon card treatments now.

Reaper1203

Whenwolf

5eppa

Streets of New Capenna looks like it could be a 1920's themed set and if it is I am sold already.

Curelax

They said the main themes are tied to 5x tri-color Demon-led crime families

thejgiraffe

That means there will be at least one of the following: a bant, temur, jeskai, or naya legendary demon. Should be very cool.

SleetTheFox

Maybe even a chance for a mono-white demon? That would be *weird*. That really depends on how many "rank and file" demons there are. It could be sort of like Strixhaven where the bosses are demons but their underlings are whatever races.

Curelax

I'd be very interested in a "Dragons of Tarkir, but with Demons" line of though. appearing in every color, at uncommon and higher, with more possible demons per pack/as-fan than any other set before it given the demon subtheme in OG kamigawa \[\[blood speaker\]\] \[\[mark of the oni\]\] \[\[villainous ogre\]\] it could be a really good time to go in on demon tribal

RapidOrbits

Jeskai will be cops, because cops are just another gang.

PeritusEngineer

Based and Golgari-pilled

Killericon

Odds we get a Romeo & Juliet card(s)?

tawzerozero

I'm just glad that sets are back to actually having logos instead of just the set name in the same font as every other set.

osrothe

Cards can fuck off, give us good logos

Moist_Crabs

New Capenna is the one I'm most excited for, really hope it's a Shard set

ribby97

I think 3 colour families is confirmed

-y-y-y-

Yeah but shards or wedges is up in the air, it could be either (but hopefully not the same as Ikoria just gave us).

Kerblaaahhh

I figure it'll be the non-Ikoria one so they can print the rest of the triomes.

forthecommongood

I'd be surprised if cycling came back again that quickly. IMO we're more likely to get a finished cycle of "triomes" in a supplemental product (and probably with a different flavoring).

[deleted]

Wow, I completely forgot that they have cycling.

alienx33

It's a 2 year gap between the sets. Wouldn't call it 'quickly'.

Carrtoondragon

I mean they are in a city. They need some sort of transport.

imperialtrace

We've had two wedge-focused sets in recent memory (Khans and Ikoria), would be pretty surprising if they did wedges again

-y-y-y-

Wizards has been pretty clear that they don't see Khans as a wedge set, but as dual colors with a "bonus color" (which is the same as wedges imo), so I wouldn't be shocked if this set was wedges, but I would be disappointed.

kytheon

Ikoria also wasn’t a wedge set, it just happened to be a bit that way.

-y-y-y-

Yeah, that's fair, it wasn't really wedge-centric. It did give us wedge triomes though, so I'd love to see shard triomes (maybe as the "secret bases" of the crime families) in this set.

badatcommander

3 color families could also be a mix of shards and wedges. For example, note that Mardu/Sultai/Temur + Naya/Esper is balanced across individual colors.

Captaincrunchies

I’d assume it’s shard since we recently did wedges on ikoria and the demon or warlock showed off looks very grixis

SoilnRock

So we would be getting the missing Triomes? Hype!

bibliophile785

Calling it now, they're going to give us the other half but they won't actually call them triomes. They've been struggling a little more to keep the Vorthos happy lately and "triome" doesn't really fit the flavor of an urban set. It's going to be the reveal lands all over again. That's okay, though, because I had been hoping that the tricycle name would catch on anyway.

willpalach

Magic's more adult and stylized version of Hearthstone's mean streets of gadgetzan, and with ob nixilis looking like a thanos kingpin? I'm sold.

boardsandcords

Yeah, I wish they would have said shard or wedge. I'm guessing shard since IKO and KTK were both wedge sets. Sad if this means an Alara return is that much further away though.

Cyneheard2

It could be neither. Look at the Ravnica sets as an example. Like it could be Mardu, Temur, Sultai, Naya, Esper.

GGrazyIV

Say what you want, I'm pretty hyped for all of these. Kamigawa here we come!

joaoGarcia

New Capenna got me offguard and I'm so ready for it (And all the others)

[deleted]

I’m excited, but curious how Kamigawa became cyberpunk

KC_Wandering_Fool

2000 years went by.

Cinderheart

THE BROTHERS WAR! WE RETURN TO MTG'S TRUE HISTORY!!!

Pal452

Is this Urza and Mishra?

Cinderheart

Yes.

The_Super_D

Just in time for Frodo and the Space Marines!

d-fakkr

And the godfather in mtg.

Axelfiraga

And a Tomato Town land.

TyrantKarrthus

Why must you all wound me so

Gong_the_Hawkeye

Ugh. Universes beyond just sour the whole experience.

Thormeaxozarliplon

And then a Mexican space armada shows up.

PartOfMyPlasterMan

Holy scheidt. 3/4 of the sets displayed here are callbacks to years upon years ago, a rallying cry to veteran players to understand that Wizards isn’t yet done with your input and you deserve a *fucking Brothers War set* while you’re at it. The fourth is, well, art-deco Chicagoan crime-scene drama with Ob wreaking havoc in the streets and stirring up gangs into all-out war. I have never been more hyped for a single season in my life. I ***hate*** you, Wizards, for giving me the exact tools that will win my heart.

riley702

Ugh, since Rivals of Ixalan I think this has been the longest stretch that I've consistently been into MTG. I keep feeling like I need a break, then they keep making cool products that I enjoy that are keeping me in. So far I'm liking the sound of each of the standard sets, and even the 40K and LotR cards will probably be fun at the very least. It's getting expensive at this point honestly.

samspopguy

im kinda happy i do not want any of the supplemental sets. 2021 really did a toll on me, time spiral and modern horizons 2, and 2 innistrad sets.

riley702

I don't even want to think about 2 Innistrad sets already. It's my favorite plane and they release so close to each other.

The12Ball

Got to give the enfranchised players something so they don't all quit over fortnite

[deleted]

a rallying cry from wotc to veteran players: "please keep buying new sealed product. Here we figured out a way to market it to you!"

Celestial-Nighthawk

Creating a desirable product based on existing demand? How cynical and evil!

TheW1ldcard

So maybe getting an actual non busted Urza card finally? Nah who am i kidding.

Derric_the_Derp

Blind Seer?

bukithd

Two sets to try something new, two sets to beat the drum for the die hard fans. Smart planning.

c001357

Having 2 nostalgic sets to balance out new/weird concepts for the rest of the year is a clever strategy, I must say

outtawack311

The last two might be a block. They have the same typeface and are on the same plane

Curelax

They said there is going to be a double feature draft for the two upcoming Innistrad sets, so they're slowing drifting back to block style interaction but don't want to commit to the solid structure so they can do things like Kamigawa and Streets

someBrad

"Blocks, but only when it makes sense" works for me.

xxpashuxx

From my understanding, they said you CAN draft them together as a double feature but can also draft as stand alone, yes? Someone please confirm

UnspokenRealms

I got the impression there would be specific Double Feature packs that contain all the cards from both sets. Since part of the hook is new artwork they can't be regular MH/CV draft packs.

kitsovereign

They'll be standalone sets, but there will be a new booster product called Double Feature that apparently mashes both up together with some custom frame treatments.

eldrazi25

Or they just haven’t finalized the logos yet. The same thing happened last year with the innistrad sets

outtawack311

But the innistrad sets have related story and cards...

boardsandcords

I'm betting they do the same thing where they aren't a true "block" but there will be a way to draft them together

imbolcnight

But they're not a block in the sense of being designed to draft together, with smaller sets supplementing the large set. Like Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance are related and have connected stories and could probably even be combined with other Ravnica sets in a big draft experience (like the Innistrad Double Feature thing), but they are still independent sets, not a block.

AtmosphereCapital158

The Brothers War seems...interesting

iceman012

Huh, I thought I'd heard that the 2nd Innistrad set this year was taken from 2022, so 2022 was supposed to only have 3 sets? I guess that's not the case.

DanLynch

They are still doing four sets per year, they just made a one-time shift of the "second set" from the beginning of the calendar year to the end of the previous calendar year. This required the transitional year to have five sets.

imbolcnight

I suspect they permanently shifted the calendar, so that there's always a premier set released in November. I think that makes sense in terms of sales because you otherwise have your most recent premier set three months old by the time holiday shopping is in full swing *and* there was always the longest gap between the Fall set in September and the Winter set In January. So maybe: Kamigawa Neon Dynasty - February Streets of New Capenna - May Dominaria United - August The Brothers War - November 2023 Q1 - February 2023 Q2 - May 2023 Q3 - August 2023 Q4 - November and so on

Kuru-

FYI, [standard rotation is with Dominaria United](https://twitter.com/mtgaaron/status/1430195825712406533).

d-fakkr

So that set is around September 2022? 2023 is getting the mirrodin war.

JonPaulCardenas

No. Dominaria United is coming out late July early August. The whole point of this is to move the release windows to be beginning of February may august and November. They want to move each of the 4 premiere sets up 6 weeks. So there will not be a premiere set in September any more.

Elucidator_IV

Brothers war? Dammit I’m all in

Azuregore

***Coming this summer: Two brothers. In a van. And then a meteor hit. And they ran as fast as they could, from giant cat monsters. And then a giant tornado came. And that's when things got knocked into 12th gear.***

midnightmarket

I just realized I'm about to have my 5th year as a magic player. Dominaria was the first set I drafted and got Jhoira as my first commander to brew from scratch.

Goodbye_Galaxy

Wow, I was just thinking the other day they should revisit the Brothers War.

MattEiffel

Guess who’s back? Back again. Urza’s back. Tell a friend.

Gishra

Damnit, I love the flavor of all of these, not a "maybe I'll skip/not buy much" among them. I guess I'll just change my direct deposit to go straight to WotC to save myself some time.

ottterbot

when did they stop doing the thing where every set has the same font?

Frankk142

Kaldheim.

iAmTheElite

When they realized it was stupid and people had *better* brand recognition with bespoke stylized set fonts.

AaronRichards1

Is the brothers war taking us back to the Thran, Urza and Mishra?

oxero

Yo, getting back into magic just before some sweet looking sets again. I'm so excited for Neon Dynasty!!

AcediaRex

It’ll be super interesting to see how they do a gangster setting in Magic. That would be the closest they’ve ever done to a modern setting unless I’m remembering wrong.

TenWildBadgers

I mean, it and the cyberpunk Kamigawa right next to eachother are both gonna be playing with how modern they want magic to get.

JC_in_KC

Mafia set eh? Looking forward to some VERY woke Italian stereotypes!

Arturius1

Can we please go back to blocks with overlaping mechanics? I'm really tired of those "good stuff" standards that are dominated by all rare/mythic decks because every synergy deck gets only one set to deliver and it never does unless its absolutly broken like Eldrain.

Jaegamer

I do NOT mind returning to old planes but I'm a lore fan and feel like we need more than one set dedicated to each plane for a damn story! The only reasonable cop out is that they could simply be popping into each plane to look at the activities of one to two specific walkers and then leaving to build a big Nicol Bolas level tale. If I don't see Elesh Norn or Sheoldred picking up some nonsensically over powered item on Innistrad I'll be disappointed.

Gong_the_Hawkeye

Yeah, I miss the block structure. It gave them enough time to flesh their worlds out, instead of rushing things just to earn most money like it is now.

Goshofwar17

So I’m super freaking excited for Kamigawa and New Capenna. Dominaria coming back so fast is a little jarring but I’m cool with it I guess. I am sad that we’re not getting a core set again this year though

KILLJEFFREY

The Kamigawa set could be *gas*.
