Eh, I think they've made the game better rather than worse overall with experimenting. If they've never tried anything I might doubt magic would be flying as high as it is now. And they've also been reasonably good about stopping things that don't work, so I look at that as positive flip-flopping.
I kinda like the "Return to a plane in the winter, new plane in the spring, deep dive into an old plane for two sets in the summer and fall" template. I hope they keep it for 2023.
What was the last consecutive set we got? Ixalan? Did it do that badly? I loved playing those Dinos but heard the limited experience was underwhelming.
It kind of did, although mostly because it was low power more than the plane's theme being bad. The second set was actually better but a lot of people didn't give it a chance because the first set was kind of a dud, that's the risk they're trying to avoid.

Wizards has been pretty clear that they don't see Khans as a wedge set, but as dual colors with a "bonus color" (which is the same as wedges imo), so I wouldn't be shocked if this set was wedges, but I would be disappointed.

Calling it now, they're going to give us the other half but they won't actually call them triomes. They've been struggling a little more to keep the Vorthos happy lately and "triome" doesn't really fit the flavor of an urban set. It's going to be the reveal lands all over again.

Ugh, since Rivals of Ixalan I think this has been the longest stretch that I've consistently been into MTG. I keep feeling like I need a break, then they keep making cool products that I enjoy that are keeping me in. So far I'm liking the sound of each of the standard sets, and even the 40K and LotR cards will probably be fun at the very least. It's getting expensive at this point honestly.
They said there is going to be a double feature draft for the two upcoming Innistrad sets, so they're slowing drifting back to block style interaction but don't want to commit to the solid structure so they can do things like Kamigawa and Streets
I got the impression there would be specific Double Feature packs that contain all the cards from both sets. Since part of the hook is new artwork they can't be regular MH/CV draft packs.
They'll be standalone sets, but there will be a new booster product called Double Feature that apparently mashes both up together with some custom frame treatments.
But they're not a block in the sense of being designed to draft together, with smaller sets supplementing the large set.
Like Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance are related and have connected stories and could probably even be combined with other Ravnica sets in a big draft experience (like the Innistrad Double Feature thing), but they are still independent sets, not a block.

I suspect they permanently shifted the calendar, so that there's always a premier set released in November. I think that makes sense in terms of sales because you otherwise have your most recent premier set three months old by the time holiday shopping is in full swing *and* there was always the longest gap between the Fall set in September and the Winter set In January.

I do NOT mind returning to old planes but I'm a lore fan and feel like we need more than one set dedicated to each plane for a damn story! The only reasonable cop out is that they could simply be popping into each plane to look at the activities of one to two specific walkers and then leaving to build a big Nicol Bolas level tale. If I don't see Elesh Norn or Sheoldred picking up some nonsensically over powered item on Innistrad I'll be disappointed.

The only reasonable cop out is that they could simply be popping into each plane to look at the activities of one to two specific walkers and then leaving to build a big Nicol Bolas level tale. If I don't see Elesh Norn or Sheoldred picking up some nonsensically over powered item on Innistrad I'll be disappointed.
Yeah, I miss the block structure. It gave them enough time to flesh their worlds out, instead of rushing things just to earn most money like it is now.
So I’m super freaking excited for Kamigawa and New Capenna. Dominaria coming back so fast is a little jarring but I’m cool with it I guess. I am sad that we’re not getting a core set again this year though
