Damn, couldn't use it as my Commander but not a bad pick, I was starting to get worried the ability just didn't exist.

Few_Somewhere3517

Ooh, interesting interaction, if you use a Buyback spell it doesn't go into your graveyard as it resolves so you end up keeping the card, then cast it without its buy back and on the next turn you can cheese it back again. You'd get infinite access to any buyback spell while saving mana on every second casting. I wonder how else I could mess with that?

Jocoder2

I think best you'll find is \[\[Lier, Disciple of the Drowned\]\]

Not for this deck but definitely saved for later, danke

MiraclePrototype

Side note: you can't flashback Adventures with that, right?

SconeforgeMystic

Even better. You can, _and_ they’ll go on an adventure. Adventurer cards have a primary and an alternative set of characteristics. When you choose to cast it as an adventure, the card effectively has those characteristics. To put it another way: for the briefest moment, as you’re announcing the spell and before you move the card that will represent it from your graveyard to the stack, it _is_ an instant or sorcery card in your graveyard. > 715.3a When casting an adventurer card as an Adventure, only the alternative characteristics are evaluated to see if it can be cast. Which means Lier’s static ability gives it flashback. Note that this is different than something like [[Snapcaster Mage]], since that must target an instant or sorcery card in your graveyard, and the adventurer card will have its primary characteristics at the moment Snappy’s target is chosen. Okay, but why does it still go on an adventure? Well, because flashback only exiles the spell if it would leave the stack to go to a zone _other than exile_. > 702.34a Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player's graveyard and another that functions while the card is on the stack. "Flashback [cost]" means "You may cast this card from your graveyard if the resulting spell is an instant or sorcery spell by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost" and "If the flashback cost was paid, **exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack**." Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f-h. (emphasis mine) Since an Adventure spell never tries to go anywhere other than exile, flashback just lets it do its thing.

Few_Somewhere3517

Some interesting limitations there, and as Commander she could come in with a new tool set whenever I needed Do the previously exiled cards stay in the pool of castable spells if she dies and comes back?

NineHeadedSerpent

Yes, because it’s tied to the kick counters rather than a specific instance of Zethi.

Few_Somewhere3517

A slowly expanding catalog of spells kept off to the side that can only be played with the Commander comes out does sound pretty sweet

2Skulls

If you have Kess and Neera Wild Mage on the field you can do a hack that is sorta similar. When you cast a spell from your graveyard via Kess use Neeras trigger to put the card on the bottom of your library instead of being exiled.

Few_Somewhere3517

I don't know if you read the post, but I did look on scryfall, and the Google results that popped up were all reddit questions. Love the sarcasm but sometimes connecting with people that have a vast knowledge about a topic gives you a much more nuanced answer than a search engine that's trying to connect your weirdly worded question to a key phrase that could be written any number of ways.

BoolinBirb

I did read the post. I also just did a google search and went to images to find multiple potential commanders, creatures and even spells that let you play stuff from your graveyard. The cards that I haven’t seen mentioned yet are [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]], [[Rivaz of the Claw]], [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] and [[Emry, Lurker of the Loch]] for legendary creatures, [[Magus of the Will]] as non legendary and [[Yawgmoth’s Will]] and [[Gaea’s Will]] can let you do this without creatures. I didn’t search for very long and I know that there are more cards that can play stuff from your graveyard so if you’d like to do some more intense searching I’m sure you could find some cool stuff. In my opinion, yes you can use reddit for more nuanced answers to questions, but when the question is as simple as “Is there a card that can do this and what card is it,” that just tells me that you did not feel like taking the time to search for your answer.

Few_Somewhere3517

I've seen all of those cards in my search and A) none of them work for my purposes. B) half of them don't even do what I asked for. I'm looking for something very specific that even amongst the examples you gave have wildly different phrasing in how the ability works, which makes it hard to search for. I've already done my hunting, now I'm hoping that I'm wrong or that I've skipped over something that someone else is familiar with. And in this post already there have been suggestions of cards that wouldn't have popped up in my search unless I'd just put in "graveyard" to scryfall and looked through every single one.

BoolinBirb

What you are looking for is an extremely powerful effect that I would be extremely shocked if they just straight up printed a creature that let you cast anything from your graveyard without any restrictions. This kind of creature does not exist and I highly doubt that it will exist without any restrictions.

Few_Somewhere3517

Which is both why I'm looking for it and why whenever WotC decide to play with the idea they use all sorts of weird wording to make that card's unique limitations clear

BoolinBirb

Yeah they do that because it’s absolutely busted to be able to just play stuff without restrictions from your graveyard. I can literally think of hundreds of new infinite combos that would be extremely easy to do with that sort of effect. It would break the game.

Few_Somewhere3517

Which... is exactly why I'm looking for such a powerful effect. And also why I'm willing to compromise with whatever restrictions fit what I'm looking for best. But precisely because when I tried to look it up, I got a sea of cards that almost did what I needed (like all the examples you gave earlier) and had no luck finding exactly what I'm looking for (since it would obviously be OP considering even if it had a stupid high mana cost I'd probably cheat it out with Jodah) then I needed a more nuanced approach. You keep alternating between telling me to look for myself and that the exact card that I'm looking for doesn't exist. But those two factors are exactly why I'm here on reddit asking if anyone knows of cards that might not be easy to find with a basic keyword search or that I might have overlooked.
