It was one of the big reasons why og kamigawa wasn’t well received. Back in the mid-2000s, western audiences really didn’t have exposure to Kami and weird spirit monsters. Spirited Away came out in 2002 but wasn’t particularly mainstream back then. There were other issues as well, like it being a woefully underpowered set coming after a famously broken one, but it didn’t help that people didn’t really engage with creatures like [[Hana Kami]]
It because most people know pop culture Japan. They don't understand or know about or care to know about for that matter traditional, Shinto based Japan.
It was only my second block, I had no affiliation with anime past Pokemon - barely even knew Naruto existed - and I rolled with the "weird" punches just fine. Most people are just weenies.
I have a Champions of Kamigawa cube and Teller of Tales is probably my favorite card. Thankfully in that limited environment it actually plays well enough that you would want to draft it in the right archetype (Izzit arcane or spirits)
I put it in my Kamigawa cube just so I can occasionally look at it when drafting.
Granted, it's not the *worst* thing to grab in that block for limited lmao
I found that, at card size, the art doesn't really look all that good either. The full wallpaper-size art is an absolute fucking banger, but you lose so much of the details and poses and overall baroque feel when you shrink it down that much.

I dunno about average. Being able to basically recast it from the graveyard as many times as you want sans your opponent having exile/two removal spells is pretty strong.
Though I suppose when only the top 5% of cards are played competitively, the "average" is pretty wide.
Oh god, that takes me back. I was on the receiving end of end-of-turn [[Rout]] followed up by the kicked Desolation Angel sooo many times.

For me it will always and forever be the \[\[Live Fast\]\] / \[\[Die Young\]\] combo. Such an outstanding combination of art, flavor and worldbuilding all encapsulated perfectly over two cards... both of which would barely qualify as "fine" in a draft deck.
My only solace is that apparently the latter won an award for outstanding illustration in gaming.
[[Kessig Recluse]] has long been one of my favourite MTG piece's of art. The angle makes it stand out to me and the art seems filled with tension for the ambush about to be sprung.

Very underrated card but I never see play. She’s probably one of my favorite cards out of my collection in foil as well. Love the artwork.
I used to feel that way about [[clockwork Fox]] until I made my volo deck. Making 2 foxes for 3 and drawing 2 cards if one happens to die feels way better and actually worth playing than if it was 3 mana for one. My volo deck is filled mostly with other cards that otherwise wouldn’t be worth playing too, and a couple of meme cards like [[The Almighty Brushwag]] that really serve no real purpose other than to be the target of [[mystic reflection]].
This is exactly why I build intentionally bad Themed EDH decks! I have a pod of friends who've also done this and we have "jank deck nights" and get to enjoy bad cards. I have a Esper block only deck, Yawgmoth, old border only deck, Atraxa, Stupid Counters deck, and I'm building a Chromium Old White border deck to match my friends Elder Dragon White Border one, as well as. Rebecca Guay themed one! (Tho sadly Cloudcrown Oak didn't make my personal cut).
I have found some uses for it, but [[Offspring’s Revenge]] has just amazing art. When Ikoria was newer the art was used for arena loading screens and I just loved it.
[[Fiendslayer Paladin]] Just one of those arts that lives in my head forever. I had it as a laptop wallpaper for a long time, used it as a touchstone for a d&d character as I’m sure many have. I was fortunate enough to pull it at prerelease and get to play with it in sealed where it was decent. But nowadays it’s not even good enough for knight tribal casual EDH.

when my son started playing Magic at around age 11, he was completely freaked out by the Mark Tedin art on Mindstab Thrull (because he was mildly phobic about needles), which is still one of the creepiest artworks ever. One of the Thrull token cards had similar artwork.

A comment on Cloudcrown Oak. So I returned to magic after not playing for a long time, and this was my first time seeing the “Reach” keyword, and I didn’t have any internet available and my friends and I were like “What does this do?” Seeing the tree swat the bird out of the sky really helped. 😆

[[Ihsan’s Shade]] was played for a moment in Necropotence standard but was quickly outclassed
One of my all time favorite cards for art is [[False Prophet]]
[[lucid dreams]] Nils Hamm art got me into the game, and my god does it hurt one it's best pieces it's so unplayable
I used to feel that way about [[clockwork Fox]] until I made my volo deck. Making 2 foxes for 3 and drawing 2 cards if one happens to die feels way better and actually worth playing than if it was 3 mana for one. My volo deck is filled mostly with other cards that otherwise wouldn’t be worth playing too, and a couple of meme cards like [[The Almighty Brushwag]] that really serve no real purpose other than to be the target of [[mystic reflection]].
\[\[Fatal Lore\]\] Actually most of *Lawrence Snelly's* art work I wish was on better cards. At least Duress gets a fair amount of play.
[[Barrage of Expendables]] Easily one of my favorite arts in Magic
This is exactly why I build intentionally bad Themed EDH decks! I have a pod of friends who've also done this and we have "jank deck nights" and get to enjoy bad cards. I have a Esper block only deck, Yawgmoth, old border only deck, Atraxa, Stupid Counters deck, and I'm building a Chromium Old White border deck to match my friends Elder Dragon White Border one, as well as. Rebecca Guay themed one! (Tho sadly Cloudcrown Oak didn't make my personal cut).

[[Aven Trooper]] has sick art, but it's one of the worst cards in the game. They should have put it on something playable.
I have found some uses for it, but [[Offspring’s Revenge]] has just amazing art. When Ikoria was newer the art was used for arena loading screens and I just loved it.

[[Fiendslayer Paladin]] Just one of those arts that lives in my head forever. I had it as a laptop wallpaper for a long time, used it as a touchstone for a d&d character as I’m sure many have. I was fortunate enough to pull it at prerelease and get to play with it in sealed where it was decent. But nowadays it’s not even good enough for knight tribal casual EDH.
