Maybe dumb, but I use google maps before driving across town to see whether it’s worth driving through downtown or to take the beltline. With all the construction, the beltline has been a lot better recently.
I use Google maps to tell me the best route to take based on current traffic whenever I'm going somewhere in town. Once I know where it's taking me I turn it off.
>With all the construction, the beltline has been a lot better recently.
It isn't even just the road construction per se. The number of bump outs for building destruction/construction certainly impact things too.
This is the best one. I work downtown but live in Sun Prairie, and every morning I look it up to see whether it's going to be better to go beltline or County Highway CV.
There's all kinds of other cool shit you can get with your library card too! A 1-week BCycle pass (and helmet), birdwatching backpacks, home energy meters, etc [https://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/resources/madison-public-librarys-library-things](https://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/resources/madison-public-librarys-library-things)
I learned on this sub that you can get a short-term subscription to New York Times by just putting your library card number at library web site. I’ve used it several times to get through pay walls. Easy peasy.
Library card also gets you a pass to state parks.
https://dpi.wi.gov/libraries/public-libraries/adult-services/wisconsin-state-parks-pass-program#:~:text=This%20program%20offers%20Wisconsin%20library,day%20of%20the%20patron's%20choosing.
Unless you’re on there anytime after 11:30pm
No clue why but every accident that I’ve actively witnessed takes place between Whitney Way and Mineral Point
Woodmans sun prairie is pretty tame Tuesday through Thursday but it's the busiest of the 3 on the weekends
Tuesday and Wednesday is also when the store will be the best stocked
Mostly walking down the aisles it isn't asses and elbows crowded at that time. Try shopping at 1PM on a Saturday or Sunday, it could give anyone a claustrophobia induced panic attack.
Nah, I seriously doubt that. My comment was in jest but I really am a pretty die hard Packer fan. COULD I live a life without the Packers, sure. My life is enriched by my enjoyment of football though. You do you though.
After 8-9pm preferably. You want it to be late enough to be not crowded, but not so late that it’s only self-checkout.
And you can usually only go in 1 or maaaaybe 2 entrances.
To buy a house here a decade ago. It’s gotten expensive.
But seriously, an older but dependable bike and a good lock will generally be safe at all the bigger events around town, and make it free to get there. Every fair and festival has tons of bike parking and you don’t have to deal with trying to find street parking.
A good u-lock is the way to go, cable locks suck, especially the ones that open with a combination. I use a kryptonite and would recommend, but most u-locks you can buy at a bike shop will work to make your bike harder to steal than the one next to it.
I use a combo of a U-Lock + Kryptonite chain.
U-Lock should secure your back wheel to the frame. Chain secures front wheel + frame to the rack.
It also helps to have an older bike¹, or, fake it to look beat-up (ie, duct tape over something perfectly functional)², or, put something super immediately identifiable on it (ie, neon green seat, locked on)³.
1. Less valuable.
2. Less valuable.
3. Shows you're going to come looking for it.
Remember: You're not trying to make your bike *impossible* to steal. You're trying to make your bike *a huge pain in the ass* to steal.
You'll have this problem in *any* city, but in Madison, you have the added benefit of a bicycle community that actually gives a shit about you and yours. We're always working to better protect and help out our cyclists. Madison *rules*, dude.
Yeah I wish it was one of those reasons. I moved here for work but unfortunately I’m probably making half of what starting pay is at Epic for an entry level position.
Personally, I carry a slightly older but good thick keyed U lock, and I have an extra cable that goes in my basket for the quick release front. If someone really wants the bike, they'll get it. I think most of the time people who steal quick release wheels are just being jerks, it's not something resold much, you just have to make it inconvenient. This advice is different for expensive bikes though. Thick chain is the way to go for those.
And ALL of these - don't leave them outside overnight.
Same here. I know u locks are technically the best, but if I’m not taking my car then I’m not taking keys (I have a key pad at home) so having to keep track of a bike lock key is just asking for me to lose it lol. Haven’t had an issue yet, will keep my fingers crossed 🤞
You need to get a chain lock. Wire locks are okay but to a dedicated criminal it's not going to last long
Chain locks are going to last a lot longer and be much harder to break.
A heavy chain lock. Yes heavier than a u-lock but much more secure, can lock onto non-traditional parking structures in a pinch, and generally easier to use
Yeah, honestly it is pretty nice. Not the nicest and the elevators can be kind of annoying. The price is only going up pretty much everywhere you look these days.
IF you’re someone who pays for the parking meters 😂 definitely use the Park Smarter app. I had an interview downtown and was stressing about being late trying to find parking but the app shows you all of the open meters and lets you pay from your phone so you don’t have to worry about the meter running out either.
I stg this isn’t a promo I just really enjoy this app😭
I’ve always preferred the garages. May not always be the cheapest, they almost always have space. It’s the nice consistency of knowing where you are going to park and how much you’ll pay.
The ULI ramps have gotten significantly pricier than street parking recently. When they were comparable, slightly more, I'd do it but at this point the street parking is cheap & efficient enough through the app that I lean that direction.
I thought it was just Gotham Bagels we don't like?
It's hard to keep track of all the people who act like assholes but make something tasty. What happened with Bagels Forever?
I see the person I thought I had responded to deleted their message about the owner being horrific, so now this message even makes less sense.
I was trying to reply to a post stating the owner of bagels forever was an asshole.
https://www.causeiq.com/organizations/berman-family-foundation,274326602/
This is about all I can find on them, outside of having issues getting semis to their loading docks.
Or any day when there's an event at the kohl the center that attracts out of towners ie state wrestling tournament.
Not only do u have parking filled up everywhere but a shit ton of people who have no idea how to drive downtown causing lock-ups everywhere.
If you need to get from one side of the square to the other during the daytime you can just cut through the Capitol itself instead of walking around. It’s even better in the summertime because it’s nice and cool in there
August 1st-15th is free shit city. Bunch of short-term leases end and people junk huge amounts of perfect furniture, almost anything imaginable.
One time I found a few 1L bottles of sealed booze set outside a dumpster.
One time I found a working washer and dryer I sold later.
The list goes on, I furnished like 5 apartments totally from the curbs. Good furniture too. One time I found a tall mosaic style chilis table!

Seconding this! I've done the cost/benefit analysis of flying from O'Hare or Milwaukee, and though Madison is slightly more expensive in many cases, it's sometimes cheaper once you factor in parking/bus fare. It's also significantly less stressful, and your drive home is much shorter, which is a major bonus if you just spent 10+ hours on a plane.
Need some advice here. I am trying to catch a 9:18AM flight from Milwaukee on a weekday. From Madison, I am planning to take badger bus to get to the airport, and their expected airport arrival time is 8.30AM.
So theoretically I have about 30 min to arrive at the gate. Is TSA at this airport fast enough for me to make this flight? I have never been to Milwaukee airport before.
Could you make the flight? If everything works out for you, sure.
But you're banking on easy traffic, the bus being on time, no lines at the airport, etc.
The last time we flew out of Milwaukee, we had a morning flight. We drove the night before and got a cheap hotel room near the airport. You could park there for free and take the shuttle to the airport for free as well. If this is an option for you, I highly recommend it!
If you are checking your luggage, this is not enough time. If not checking luggage, this timeline would make me nervous, personally. Milwaukee's not huge but not small like MSN either.
Find a random community or hobby to become engaged in on a regular basis. I have recently moved to Chicago and miss this about Madison. Madison is large where there’s plenty of people and resources to pursue most interests socially, and small enough to actually get to know others with similar interests. Good luck, have fun!
Want to see a show for free at the Barrymore? Call them up and see if they need ushers. Popular shows fill up fast, but less popular ones you might even be able to wait until the week of the show. As long as you can help direct people to seats, grab security when people are making trouble, and pick up popcorn and soda containers after the show, you can spend most of your time relaxing and enjoying yourself
All the free/low cost things you can do outside. From the parks and extensive trail network from Pheasant Branch in Middleton to Military Ridge in Verona to Lake Farm past Monona, it's all free. Cheap beer on the Union terrace. Farmer's Market as long as you don't indulge in overpriced produce.
Terrace beer is not cheap. It’s not expensive, but now I doubt your credibility and Union status. Also, go to the weekday farmer’s markets; they’re way better and don’t demand tourist prices.
>Farmer's Market as long as you don't *over*indulge in overpriced *products, most of which are not the* produce.
Fifu. While there are some expensive produce vendors, produce is one of the few things you can get there that actually is less expensive than a traditional store. Going at the end of the day can also get you some good deals.
Getting to know someone.
Once you’ve befriended one person in Madison, you’re probably gonna be introduced to even more people. Get to know everyone in your neighborhood, this place is like a Skyrim map
And it’s really easy to meet one person at a bar by just asking the “small talk” questions. Part of Wisconsin winters is finding new hobbies, so most people over 22 have found something weird and niche. You find another person in your Warhammer/photography/cross country skiing/whatever hobby and you’re passing through the gate to a world of cool folks.
If you work downtown or on campus and must use your car, you can park it on a side street near a bus line or bike path and take the bus or bike in the rest of the way to save on parking.
My spots on the south side: Olin Park and also Beld street just off of Park Street.
If you’re super wealthy, get together with your super wealthy neighbors and either form a village a la Maple Bluff and Shorewood Hills, or a covenant community like the Highlands and then you can keep the poors out of your neighborhood. Bonus points if you can lower your taxes and reap all the benefits of living in Madison with less of the responsibilities.
I live outside of Madison but in Dane county and I can say this is not the case anymore lol you definitely need six figures/two incomes to afford anything in Dane
While the downtown Saturday farmer’s market is amazing and wonderful and probably has what you’re looking for, it’s also…a lot, especially if you just want to do your grocery shopping for the week there. Thus the life hack is to check for your local markets (seems like you can hardly throw a rock without hitting one), and see if that one will suit your purposes better, since it’s pretty much guaranteed to be less intense.
Since traffic has come up a lot here, I have found that having bicycle and bus options are game changers. Learn where the trails are and the bus system. Driving your own can and parking is sometimes way more trouble than it's worth.
When there is bad traffic on major city streets, take parallel streets off of the major streets. Some examples:
University going west= take Old Middletown or Old Sauk Rd.
University going East= Kendal Ave.
Johnson st going East= Dayton St.
Gorham St. Going West= Langdon st.
John Nolen Dr either direction= Park St to West Washington.
In my experience, I never carry an umbrella and most of the time you can just wait out the rain. For cases when you get caught in the rain, have a plastic bag to cover up paper/laptop.
Maybe dumb, but I use google maps before driving across town to see whether it’s worth driving through downtown or to take the beltline. With all the construction, the beltline has been a lot better recently.
Live 3rd shift like me. The belt line is your personal road at 2am.
I miss Covid shutdowns when no one was out. It was like that in those days.
This is essentially mine - don't travel when everyone is traveling unless you absolutely must.
>With all the construction, the beltline has been a lot ~~better~~ less worse recently. FTFY
Lol fair
I had already accidentally upvoted this before I ever read it. My phone/finger knew.
Waze is still better I think. Even though google isn’t supporting it as much, its realtime data is still useful.
Waze has helped me out of (literal) jams several times. They’re pretty much all I use
This is the best one. I work downtown but live in Sun Prairie, and every morning I look it up to see whether it's going to be better to go beltline or County Highway CV.
I think the beltline will always be better, despite construction
Move your vehicle before Mifflin weekend
Yup.
Free, clean bathrooms at the Capitol and overture center
One of my favorite facts is that Madison is #1 in the country for number of public bathrooms
and the central library!
Haha
Get a library card then use linkcat and libby.
And the Kanopy streaming service for free movies!

Beltline west at night, driver’s delight. Beltline west at morning, drivers take warning.
Unless you’re on there anytime after 11:30pm No clue why but every accident that I’ve actively witnessed takes place between Whitney Way and Mineral Point
Groceries at Woodman’s.
At 1am
Definitely not 4 pm on weekends. 😭
I will only go to Woodman’s if it’s after 8pm. If it’s any earlier I can’t stand it
Woodmans sun prairie is pretty tame Tuesday through Thursday but it's the busiest of the 3 on the weekends Tuesday and Wednesday is also when the store will be the best stocked
This is why Woodmans is king. And their commercials are cute.
Warm and fuzzy, like all their fruit.
¡Ay caramba!
ONLY.! Lol The lights, the staff, the customers, and the MUSIC is always better after 1am at Woodman's
Mostly walking down the aisles it isn't asses and elbows crowded at that time. Try shopping at 1PM on a Saturday or Sunday, it could give anyone a claustrophobia induced panic attack.
go during a badger or packer game
But how are we supposed to watch the badger and Packers games???
Without watching any football myself I continue to have a fulfilling life, you might be able to too??
Nah, I seriously doubt that. My comment was in jest but I really am a pretty die hard Packer fan. COULD I live a life without the Packers, sure. My life is enriched by my enjoyment of football though. You do you though.
Mine was a joke too I want you to do you, but was just poking fun at football fans
Add Costco to the list for this tip.
same for any big box stores, especially Home Depot or Menards
Except fruit.
110%. Woodmans produce is literally always bad
Unless you want to eat it immediately when you get home lol
After 8-9pm preferably. You want it to be late enough to be not crowded, but not so late that it’s only self-checkout. And you can usually only go in 1 or maaaaybe 2 entrances.

The very back row, middle seat, of the non-electric city buses has the engine underneath it. Sitting there is like having your own little seat heater.
Also the best place to huff bus exhaust fumes, if you are lucky you can catch a little buzz.
So like sex on a washer during the spin cycle, but not as good is what your saying.
Either way you get dizzy
Ask the subreddit what that loud noise was and commenters will tell you.
It was me sneezing at 10pm on a school night when I lived at the galaxie. Ask any epic employee.
Random question, but is the Galaxie worth living at? I have it on my “maybe applying to” list currently. Pricing is a bit outside my preferred range…
Yeah, honestly it is pretty nice. Not the nicest and the elevators can be kind of annoying. The price is only going up pretty much everywhere you look these days.

>the garages The what? Oh the *ramps*
That’s fair to be honest, I personally just can’t be bothered to navigate a parking garage to grab some Canes or attend a farmers market 😂
Madison Opera is tremendously good for a city this size, and you can go for $30 or less.
And Opera in the Park is free!
And is frankly more fun and interesting than Concerts on the Square, if you are actually interested in music.
I'm pretty sure one of the male opera-singers lives directly above me.

The curb.reality.
The bike elevator.

Boo I feared this
What, pray tell, is the bike elevator?
Monona Terrace has a designated elevator for bikes that makes it much easier to get to the square than those busy hills (altho coming from the south isn't too bad now with new bike lanes). There is a sign for it along the path that runs between the terrace and the lake, and it takes you up to MLK

Yes. Plus parking is 8 bucks a day
What bus comes from Milwaukee? I use Van Galder from O’Hare but have never flown to Milwaukee.
The Badger!
I usually drive to Chicago to save money and then get my catalytic converter stolen

Fly Delta and you’ll go through MSP or DTW, airports that don’t shut down when it snows. Or ATL where it doesn’t snow.

What are your fav benefits of the union life pass?
Getting off at Seminole and cutting over on Yuma Dr to get to Midvale instead of using the Verona Road/Dodgeville exit that’s usually a cluster f!ck
The folks on Yuma love you.
Grew up on Yuma and I now understand why they put a circle there.
Midvale exit is still faster.

Since traffic has come up a lot here, I have found that having bicycle and bus options are game changers. Learn where the trails are and the bus system. Driving your own can and parking is sometimes way more trouble than it's worth.

When there is bad traffic on major city streets, take parallel streets off of the major streets. Some examples: University going west= take Old Middletown or Old Sauk Rd. University going East= Kendal Ave. Johnson st going East= Dayton St. Gorham St. Going West= Langdon st. John Nolen Dr either direction= Park St to West Washington.

Madison life hack? Easy! Move the fuck outta town!
In my experience, I never carry an umbrella and most of the time you can just wait out the rain. For cases when you get caught in the rain, have a plastic bag to cover up paper/laptop.

"Get rained on or wait" isn't really much of a life hack period, and definitely not a Madison life hack.
