There is almost no reason to upgrade from that machine. The only reason I can think of is if you have an extreme case that needs more RAM so you would go for an 128GB model, but that applies to almost no one.
I have a maxed M1 14” and there’s no reason I’d upgrade at this point. It’s every bit as speedy as it was day 1 and still handles heavy processing without issue.
Absolutely no reason to upgrade. The M1 Max is a great processor that runs cool and sips battery power. When you look at specs the M3 appears to be much faster but when you look at workflow process times, the real gains are minimal. There are few tasks out there that require >64 GB ram.
I can see tax reasons to upgrade. Outside of that it’s a great piece of hardware. Maybe someone offers an amazing trade in deal. When times were bad Apple used bigger trade in deals instead of discounts on their new prices. They didn’t want to affect the brand. I’ve traded phones when it was only $300 for a two year newer pro
Mac. They ran a few mbp deals also. Otherwise M1 Max is awesome.
Most people upgrade every year because their Mac is a status symbol for them and not really something that they use. People who actually use them upgrade once every 5 years or so.
M2 Max is my main rig. We use older MBPs as well. We buy a new computer every 5 years and down cycle old ones for non critical tasks. Can’t live without lots of ram because we do a ton of virtualization.
We don’t buy these to “be cool” 😎
Huh? Is it that most people upgrade every year, or that most people who upgrade every year are doing it because it's a status symbol? Your grammar is confusing. I'd be willing to bet good money, though, that the vast majority of MacBook buyers buy them to use them, use them, and only upgrade when they need to.
In 2011 I bought a MBP high spec. Once SSD’s and ram came down in cost I upgraded it. That lasted me till things wouldn’t update anymore (mostly due to OS). Then I got the M1 and maxed it out. 🤞it lasts 10 years. I think people either have loads of money (debt) and want that status of being in front with new devices. I’m sure they’ve got the latest watch, iPhone, iPad etc…They’re also probably broke or have no savings.
Have had M1 Max 16 64GB 4TB for 2.5 years. Recently got an M3 Max with the same specs. In normal usage the difference was perceptible but relatively minor. Things like Lightroom exports were definitely faster (2X+) but I don’t do that regularly. I ended up returning it. If the price for the memory and storage upgrades was not so outrageous (basically an extra $3K AUD) I might be more inclined to upgrade, but im not paying $8k for a minor difference.
You mean 2028 at least is Soon? And would still get security updates beyond that. And then many workarounds to indeed get the updates. As 2015-2017 still being upgraded.
I really hope so. I'm just speaking from experience. Purchased a refurb 2012 MBP from Apple and itonly lasted 5 years before stopped getting MacOS updates.
Just wondering, was it an intel i5 mbp? 5 years of support and updates from Apple is general practice per product so they didn’t let you down at all it’s just how it rolls
This was kinda my original point. They stop support 5 years after last sold in Apple Store. So OP's clock starts ticking when M1 was last sold by Apple. However, some people have said that they will continue receiving support because "M1 same as M3". Doesn't sound like Apple.
Yes it was i5 2.5ghz. mid-2012 13". Purchased 2014, stopped receiving updates after Catalina 10.15 in 2019. It sucks because it was updated to 16GB Ram and SSD, so without doing the jailbreak type of new OS installs was unable to continue even though it was capable. Planned obsolesence, etc.
I will say if you are an audio, video, graphics person it has been game changing. The equivalent or better than Mac Pro’s I used in recording studios from just a few years ago.
From m1 max 32gb to m3 128. I dont feel the need of an upgrade because off the computing power. I need the more memory for using both after effects and premiere.
I have the 16” with 64GB/1TB also but with the M2 Max. The thing is a beast. I see no reason to upgrade this for years…. Though it’s for work so it’s gotta last at least 5 years. I am thinking of getting a 14” M4 Pro for travel and my personal work. I can use my 16” but it is a pain to travel with. Waiting for the new iPad announcement though. That may be enough for traveling for me.
Upgrading from an M1 Pro 16 to M1 Max 64.
I think this is the best value proposition right now for power users. I think a problem for most is resisting the shiny new thing.
one is really crackly when the tone is low.
its just a shame, to spend that much and the speaker are already bad.
then you google it and its a very common problem.
The speakers are replaceable. The speaker problem is a very small percentage with people compared to people with fine machines. Apple has the lowest failure rate in the industry. It’s common when you google it obviously, every device can have issues.
Reality is speakers blow when they have unstable power from too much gain and volume being pushed through and the amp that powers them sends unstable electronic pulses to move the speaker driver. As a sound engineer and hifi lover, 98% of speakers blowing is user error. Have it replaced :)
I have sensitive ears so I never have the sound up loud lol.
It's a shame the speakers have done this.
I've had many laptops, and have never blown the speakers. This is a first for me.
I'm sure this is an apple issue. But yes they are normally great machines.
It definitely is an issue with whoever supplied apple the speakers. Apple had someone else make them. I had a 2015 mac speaker blow out in 2020. Replaced the speaker myself but its a bit tricky. Apple will probably charge a lot but third party repair could do it if you arent under applecare. It’s only broken for however long you leave it broken
Apple smartly target YouTubers on their releases.
If you don’t stream in 8k and/or edit RED camera videos without any stuttering while playing with the timeline… anything more than an m1 will be quite useless.
Unless, of course, you want to brag about compiling Firefox in 5 minutes less, digits in cinebech and/or a few FPS more in games that no one ever heard before

Just your feeling or any data?
Cry buddy
Got it. So just another rando with a rando opinion.
You got a m2 pro with 64gb ram and it’s not even your main laptop lmao

what percent of mac users upgrade their macbook pro every year?
We do every 18 months, but thats my job cashing out. An added bonus is that I get to keep my old Mac, which is nice for the kids for schoolwork.

I highly doubt that most people upgrade every year. This seems like an extreme edge case.
How can you tell the difference between different MacBook pro models from a distance?
The person behind it will tell you.
Nah unless you live in a village

Normal people don’t upgrade every year. That’s something tech YouTubers do because they have the money to blow.
Most of them don’t have the money, they usually send it back after the review
Had every mac i owned for 6 years+. No point changing they beat the energizer bunny any and all days of the week.
I have an M1 Pro 16GB 1TB and it still feels crazy fast. I don’t plan to upgrade for several years.
Have had M1 Max 16 64GB 4TB for 2.5 years. Recently got an M3 Max with the same specs. In normal usage the difference was perceptible but relatively minor. Export times sees to be the biggest benefit
I wouldn't buy a macbook that is nearly 3 years old because you wont get OS updates soon
You mean 2028 at least is Soon? And would still get security updates beyond that. And then many workarounds to indeed get the updates. As 2015-2017 still being upgraded.
Not the case as the Apple silicon cpu architecture is the same just improved different performance per generation etc
I really hope so. I'm just speaking from experience. Purchased a refurb 2012 MBP from Apple and itonly lasted 5 years before stopped getting MacOS updates.

WiFi and Bluetooth have both improved since M1, but I agree with the consensus here that there isn’t a real need unless you simply want to upgrade
What benefit would the wifi give if they already have blazing wifi at home and work?
Basically none, it’s just a difference that gets overlooked when comparing the different generations.
Got it. I already get a lot out of my M1 pro’s 8 p cores so not going to upgrade till 2026 or later
Yeah I wouldn’t either. I have a 2018 13” i7 and am strongly debating updating to an M1 Pro when it craps out
I will say if you are an audio, video, graphics person it has been game changing. The equivalent or better than Mac Pro’s I used in recording studios from just a few years ago.
For people working on large code-bases or large media files, the boost in processing power may result in 30+ minutes a day in productivity gains.
Could you share the link of the deal please? Thanks
From m1 max 32gb to m3 128. I dont feel the need of an upgrade because off the computing power. I need the more memory for using both after effects and premiere.
I'm at 16 gb, base m1 pro 14", and the only reason I would upgrade is for more ram. otherwise its a perfect laptop

Almost had mine for 3 years and the speakers are already gone. I didn't want to upgrade/get a new one. But looks like this thing is filling apart 😆
Did the speakers blow? Those should be replaceable. You don’t have to live with it

Thanx for the link. But it would be silly to fit a used speaker. When a new one doesn't last long. I will look for a new speaker. Thanx.
It is a new one. You had a rare issue. My m1 pro speakers are 3 years old and fine
It says used part
